Feb 21   alt-rnb rnb tropical-house pop electronic electronia fawmtronica collab

Not Safe For Work

Liner Notes

@thelowestbitter: I made the instrumental of this song in the first week of FAWM after discovering Garageband now has a synth setting that does the tropical house dolphin squeal sound (as heard in the excellent pop song "Sorry" by Justin Bieber, and approximately 10,000 other less excellent pop songs). I was aiming for some alt-R&B vibe I think instead of tropical house? I'm not sure how well I achieved it.

Anyway, I made a couple of half-hearted attempts at vocals with some mediocre, meta lyrics about trying to write a pop song and failing, but I gave up once I realised the vocal melody I was singing was basically Temporary Secretary by Macca. I was all set to abandon this but I asked @judypie if she had any ideas for it, because last year she successfully rescued another FAWM song I was struggling with, and she's managed to work her magic again! Way to go Julie! Next year I promise we'll do a proper collab and I won't just throw my garbage at you for you to turn into diamonds (even if you're good at it!). šŸ˜€

@judypie - Jed sent me backing track and said he was feeling some FKA Twigs vibes.. Think I gave him more FCK Sticks but w/e, this was fun. I loved the opportunity to sing on something that isn’t just my bloody acoustic guitar so thank you for the sounds Jed 😁 No idea where the lyrics came from. I was just unconsciously rambling about two strangers meeting at a party and clicking and having the night of their lives and then.. well it got all heavy and turned into daterape or something.. I feel like Jed’s music got darker in the second half so my lyrics seemed to follow it down the deep dark hole.. so I just wrote all the sickening lines that people use to get you into bed with them. Batted it back to Jed so he could get his vocoder on! Thank you Jed šŸ˜€

Lyrics

We’ll be talking in hieroglyphics by morning
I’ll be dancing about architecture for him
We’ll make perfect sense
Watch for the click
Polyphonic monophony to end it

You’ve been waiting for me
And I’ve been waiting for you

Let’s go and get it on
I know this will last past dawn
Didn’t know I’d get so lucky tonight
Baby don’t put up a fight

Why you putting up a fight?
Do you think you can change your mind?
What about all the fun we had tonight?
Take my word for it, this will be just fine

I’ve been watching you
I saw you watching me
You know I’m feeling you
And you owe it to me

Let’s go and get it on
Baby please stop with no
You’re gonna be my bitch
Don’t say you didn’t feel the click

Don’t say you didn’t feel the click.

Your voice just gets better & better Julie- I agree that you suit the R & B vibes. The song is very cool indeed. The lyrics are scaring me a bit...

The rape anthem lyrics gives a new angle to the Petit Biscuitry of the music. I thought you sang "take my Warfarin, it'll be just fine" and now I'm imagining a middle-aged couple making sure they've taken their meds before a shag so they don't have a heart attack. I'm a fan of the continued use of the vocoder, that coupled with the other synths and vocal processing gives a cool electro and yet very much vocally driven feel to this song.

I am FREAKING OUT at @frenchcricket's comment comparing this to Sleigh Bells-- I read that before listening, and holy cow yeah. This sounds just like them AKA my absolute favorite band so ummmm you could say I like this a lot.

  • @frenchcricket  Feb 28

Really enjoyed this. lol at the Zappa (?) reference. Julie's voice really suits modern r'n'b production, although she kinda sounds like the singer from Sleigh Bells. It's good!

  • @pinky Feb 28

Your going to have musicians rooting through your garbage now. That was fantastic! Perfect vocals to go with the music! The whole song was hypnotic and entrancing. Great job you two!

  • @evinwolverton  Feb 28

"We’ll be talking in hieroglyphics by morning" is legit a very sexy line. I'm totally gonna steallllllll ittttttttt and give you credittttttttt ā™„ļøŽ

  • @websheldon  Feb 26

I'm totally feeling that Alt-R&B vibe @thelowestbitter and I like hearing this different side to your vocals @judypie those vocal pitch changes are cool and fit well with the genre of the song!

  • @theidleowl  Feb 26

Super synth vibes here and your vocals work really well in this setting as others have said Julie. I like how it gets darker as it goes on. Super collab you two!

  • @degausser  Feb 25

Your vocals always sound great in a more R&B setting Julie. I think all the waily synth and guitar sound are really interesting here. It’s like they’re aliens trying to talk to me!
Great vibes throughout this! Well done guys.

  • @cqcqcq Feb 25

Love the synth in this. love the vocals in this. love the lyrics in this. love this!!

  • @lanasolyluna Feb 25

Oh this is so so good. Love what you guys did here. The instrumentation is so fun and both you just nail the vibes with your lyrics and vocals. Glad @judypie rescued this one. Every time I hear tracks like this I realize I need to get more on the collab train (other than my husband because we already play together all the time.) magic and yeah FKA Twigs, can see it!

  • @kissinginpublic  Feb 23

Love how most of this is vocals and percussion. The effects are great and the production is spot on. Really enjoyable listening. What a great year for collabs!

  • @iwilleatyou Feb 22

The vocal effects are great! I totally get a Gwen Stefani vibe with this. Love the overall structure. I'm going to wait at a traffic intersection, roll down the windows and wait until some hip hop dude starts blasting some gangsta shit. Then I'll blast this song and give out some gang signs. That's how I roll.

  • @candle  Feb 22

I really liked the way you guys intermingled both of your voices on this track. It gives it the sense of an actual conversation. Great collab!

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @vomvorton  Feb 22

I thought I'd de-zonged this last night but I must have forgotten to click the button. I bet I had something AMAZINGLY profound to say. Love the five way conversation here between @judypie, @thelowestbitter, a seagull, a giant and a passing robot. Sounds like QUITE the party! Great songwriting too obviously, this sounds both Frighteningly Modern and reassuringly melodic.

  • @susyblue  Feb 22

Excellent, love the sugar sweet vocals that slowly start to juxtapose to the scary lyrics, which are by the way frckn awesome! Love the first two lines the most. Also lovin the vocoder vocals and the interplay between both your vocals later in the song.

  • @antlion Feb 22

thanks for the comments! planning to work on that christmas demo this weekend šŸ˜€

  • @heliosonorous Feb 21

This track was great and having listened to both of your material I liked that I could hear both of your styles represented well.

  • @shortdan  Feb 21

I'll be honest, I was pissing myself reading the liner notes (tropical house dolphin squeal sound) and now the track is 3/4 of the way through and I've not really taken any of it in! Let me start again...

That is one hell of a dark turn those lyrics took! 😮 Nice work guys - this is quirky, original and fun (despite being a bit rapey!).

  • @gbg2016  Feb 21

Well, I think the rhyming of "bitch" and "click" pretty much sums it up... A great collaboration, with really cool sounds, great lyrics and vocals, and just the right blend of super happy super creepy. Love the vocoder.

  • @adforperu  Feb 21

YES to the Bieber whale sounds! Ooo yeah, getting Grimes vibes here I reckon. Love the bouncing beats, and Julie's vocals are some melodic and hooky! Lyrics are daaaaaaaark but very cool, quite different to what I'm used to reading from you. Love that this is quite low-key, but still bangs. The backing vocal that with the octave up is ace.
