I recorded the chord sequence really early in the month but I've not gotten around to using it yet. It a bit rough but I was too lazy to rerecord it.
I thought it was quite haunting, so I tried to keep the instrumentation/melody lines in step with that.
Lyrically, I was thinking of the prevalence in recent years to blame those lower down the social pecking order for anything bad, be that benefits claimants (welfare in the US), asylum seekers or whoever. This view seems to be perpetuated by those at the top of the system, while they literally laugh all the way to the bank. Meanwhile, everyone blames those that are most helpless. I think we've seen the culmination of that in recent political events on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as many other places (Hungary and Brazil both spring to mind).
Whatever happened to empathy?
Is it that people don't care about anyone?
Whatever happened to Emily?
Did she get left by the wayside on the way home?
Maybe you could try some sympathy
Stop trying to dehumanise those below you
Whatever happened to dignity?
Is it just passé?
You keep punching down, down, down...
