This song didn't turn out exactly the way I intended, but they do that sometimes. I wanted to write something about creating beauty to bring what we need, rather than already having what we need and longing for beauty. You tell me if this achieved that or not. As with most other songs, possible recording pending.
Once upon a century we danced,
Once upon an age the heavens had us entranced
And we sang
And rang our chimes and pounded drums.
Once upon a century we cried,
Wishing on the clouds to give us all that they hide
In the sky,
Relying on the rains to come.
We were the artisans of the storm,
Depending on the rains to live,
We created beauty in all forms
As we circled in song and gave all we could give,
We were the children of offering,
Of ceremonies bleak and glad,
We reaped the bounty that harvests bring
And were grateful for all that we had.
Once upon a century we called,
If those people saw us now, they would be appalled
At our ways,
Amazed at how we hate the rain.
Once we danced and sang, and now we long
For the love of beauty in the rain and our song
Once entwined,
To find what seeds of need remain.
We were the artisans of the storm,
Depending on the rains to live,
We created beauty in all forms
As we circled in song and gave all we could give,
We were the children of offering,
Of ceremonies bleak and glad,
We reaped the bounty that harvests bring
And were grateful for all that we had.
We were the artisans of the storm,
Depending on the rain to fall,
We created beauty in all forms
As we prayed with a unity we can’t recall,
We were the children of offering,
Of masquerade and ringing staves,
Will the day come when, once more, we sing,
And are grateful for all that we have?

Fabulous lyrics and this will be a really good song.

This is wonderful. The imagery in each verse is strong and compelling, and makes me feel a sadness about what we've indeed lost.
Excellent imagery throughout, and line 1 in the first verse really engages the reader's interest. Good work. 😉

I think you achieved your aim. This song aches with the memory of a time when we "prayed with a unity we can’t recall," and an enacted beauty as supplication and invocation. Powerful stuff.

I think "Once upon a century..." is a great verse starter! This will make a good folk tale song.

There are rites and ceremonies held within the human psyche that go back thousands of generations: the new year (and the kingly sacrifice), the harvest celebration, birth, death. Our ancestors knew the cycles because they lived and died accordingly. Your song reminds us that we're not too far removed from those cycles--only a half dozen generations perhaps. What will we do if/when our modern world fails and we have to rely on cycles again? Powerful thoughts/ideas. I look forward to hearing your melody.
