Cieran (Kraftek) came up with a wonderful track full of nostalgia and yearning. It haunted me for days. I sang little snatches of nonsense to build up a melody for the verses and chorus (as I saw them). Finally, today, I don't know why but the image of these warriors setting off for home after a minor war they have just won, came to mind and the first lines appeared. The rest almost wrote itself.
Homeward. Row the boats homeward.
What we came for we have achieved.
Honour the glory we've received.
Treasures. We've amassed treasures.
Offering comfort to the bereaved.
Though they might still feel much aggrieved.
Let fly the ravens to thank good Odin for our spoils.
Cast out our nets that Njor may reward us our toil.
Homeward. Raise the sail! Homeward
Let the sky be serene and clear
Let not the storm clouds reappear.
Tend to, the wounded among the crew
May Eir bless this healing brew
May she their youth and strength renew
Comfort our women who patiently wait on the shore
Preparing a feast of fresh herring, smoked reindeer and boar.
Offer the best cuts in sacrifice to our god Thor.
Heroes approach who have vanquished their foes in a war.
