Bucket Made of Wood

by @jsini

1 week   folk bucket

Liner Notes

This is a long story, but what else do you have to do? (Besides writing 10 more songs). So I went to a white coopering class. It is the process of making a wooden bucket. It is the same process as making a cask, like for whiskey. No screws, no nails, no glue, no sealants, and when you are done it holds water, because of precision cutting of the wood. I made a bucket, it turned out quite nice. Though I have not put water in it to see if it will hold. I have no reason to believe it won’t.
So, I had no ideas for a new song. Zero. My brain was a barren desert. I picked up my guitar anyway and started strumming. I looked around the room and saw my bucket and sang “I made a bucket made of wood”. I wrote the song right then wordsmithed a bit and it’s a song. I’m not sure if it will hold water either but like the bucket, it is what it is.

Lyrics

Bucket Made of Wood

I made a bucket out of wood
It won’t hold water like it should
Looking at it you’d never know
About the water it won’t hold

There was a woman I once knew
Golden hair and eyes of blue
We fell for each other’s lines
We couldn’t pass the test of time

I made a bucket out of wood
It won’t hold water like it should
Looking at it you’d never know
About the water it won’t hold

If it were steel it would rust
And turn into brown dust
Out of glass would never do
But at least I could see through

I made a bucket out of wood
It won’t hold water like it should
Looking at it you’d never know
About the water it won’t hold

What if it were made of gold
If it were just plated would I know?
Or would the shine soon grow old?
Words not spoken are not told

    Nice blues song

I was drawn to this one because one of my favorite songs is "My Bucket's Got a Hole In It" by Hank Williams.
Love this one! You tell the tale with resigned good humor and well-earned wisdom. Guitar/vocal is just right for a personal song like this - I picture you performing this with the bucket next to you.
Did you ever find out if your bucket works?

Ooh I love these lyrics and the story that inspired them.

This is great! I love "Looking at it you’d never know/About the water it won’t hold" and its deeper implications. What a cool framing for a song. And that last line is intriguing . . .

    I love your voice!

Super interesting song man. Love the concept and simplicity of it all, real southern gothic vibe.
Also your voice reminds me of Faces-era Rod Stewart here (that’s a good thing ha!)

It definitely holds water. I like how you turned your hard, non musical creativity into a song . Great, rootsy delivery.

Your story reminds me of books that my dad and grandparents had by Eric Sloane; where he details american craft of everyday useful items. Barrel and bucket making seemed to have quite a bit of pages dedicated to them. How cool you were able to take a class in this. You'll be singing this to yourself EVERY time you see it!

like the analogy and country style singing - very John Prine. love it.
