I Crawled Out of the Dump Today

I crawled out of the dump today
It was tougher than I thought
A broken melon - on abandoned ways
I wiped my eyes again too soon
I cried a little while
Instead of resting - on a desert dune
CHORUS
I rode here in the first place
Too asleep to know the way
All the years here - on the rail
Wake me up, and love me all the way
I heard a bird singing today
Sweetest song I ever felt
Broken hearted - on the lost highway
I washed my heart in mud
It smarted but I tasted the blood
Without blowin’ out - the sunny days
I rode here in the first place
Too asleep to know the way
All the years here - on the rail
Wake me up, and love me all the way
Wake me up, and love me anyway

Wake me up, and love me all the way. What more could any of us ask for? This song is a beautiful example of what Gretchen Peters says, "Sad songs make me happy." Hopeful, too.

Kim this is haunting and lovely. Weary hobo. Love it.

sweet, Kim. Nice melody - like it when you stretch up there. (I'm trying to take your suggestion and be brave with that too but the songs keep coming out low!) Lots of good keeper lines in this one, as mentioned in the other comments 😀

i havent heard a good hobo song in a long time. yours is a refreshing take, far outside the lexicon of bummery, we find broken melons and a heart washed in mud. and your music was direct and delivery heartbreaking.

You and Corin Raymond both know have to write a "meager hope for the down and out" song. I agree with Beth. The chorus is wonderful.

I love the broken melon; such an evocative image. The chorus is fantastic.
