Thaw

by @ggallagher

Feb 10   selfskirmish winter fast piano

Liner Notes

This feels like a study in a few concepts I like rather than a fully formed song. But either way this mofo came to me as I was walking from my car to home and then I sat down poured myself a beer and knocked it out and the tempo and concept came first like the song was like "I know this is a lot but this is my tempo, deal with it." So it's rough but I like the themes.

Lyrics

Winter night
Cold air floats
On the wind
Breath is frozen
Walking faster
Shoulders tense
Sweating under
So many layers
Feel so cold
And so warm
And afraid
My face will freeze

Darkness
Solitude
Hyperfocused
Almost home
Pulse is pounding
Time is racing
Wondering
Will it ever
Thaw

So many times
I feel frozen
Numb to the
Emotions that are
Knocking behind
The surface
Crying out
Thru dreams and actions
Facebook status
Manic moments
Coping with
Booze and cheese
Mind is frozen fight or flight
Spirals of he said she said

will I stop
Will I learn
To see what’s hers
And what’s mine

Will I warm up
Will i slow down

Will it ever
Thaw

And I feel
The sheet of ice
Dividing us
The things that we can’t
Say the way that
You freeze up
Your words are masking
What you want to say
And I think I can see thru
This translucent frame
And I think I can see
Something you can’t name
And I may be
Projecting my own view
And I know that
All I can do is believe that it will
Thaw

“Coping with booze and cheese” is so real! The driving nature of this song really captures the feeling of hurrying down the sidewalk on those biting, subzero days.

nice contrasts in this song - goo d stuff - exploring dualism at all levels, nice.

I realize this is a metaphor, but being in Fairbanks, AK, I also identify with wondering if it will ever thaw! I like this and I think the tempo is perfect.

The difference between wordy verses and a single syllable as the refrain is very smart! Lovely piano work as well. Ontario-born here, very cold this time of year...
