Late Friday (8 Feb.), I checked email and found an offer from Eventide for a steep discount on "Instant Phaser Mk II." I've been wanting to get an entry-priced plugin from them for a couple of years, on the hypothesis that, like other vendors, they have regular sales on the more expensive items, and you often get a further discount if you already own one of their products.
Bonus is that it the "Instant Phaser" emulation.
Unfortunately, installing it has brought some serious hurt to my DAW. Kontakt will no longer load or even be recognized by REAPER in 64bit. Valhalla VintageVerb is now stuck back in demo mode and cuts out every 45 seconds. I haven't gone completely around the horn to see if there are other problems, but that feels like enough, please and thank you.
I can still get Kontakt to run as a stand-alone and also in the 32-bit version of Reaper. But that chops down the number of plugins I can use, and Pigments from Arturia won't even load in 32-bit REAPER.
And this was all before I could actual sort out the demo and get it working.
A little angry and a little frustrated.
And then a few hours later, pounding on the keyboard, listening to the phaser and how wonderful it sounds and it doesn't feel like a total loss. I'm banging away at the Clavinet/Farfisa pad in my default template thinking, "That kinda sounds like The Doors." I push the riff around a bit so it sounds less so and then hit record. Then the chorus pops into mind. I tried to hum a harmony to the chorus but it didn't really work, so I reversed the audio, doubled it and panned it hard left & right and that seemed to work. Since there's really no end to this A-B loop I just stretched out the reversed bits and pushed them out of sync with each other for a final chorus-like outro.
So this is less a song and more just messing around with a new phaser plugin demo to see if I want to buy it while its still on sale.
I don't know if the DAW is borked for good or not, but I'll keep at it to see if I can sort things out.
The wind is blowing really hard and that's one particular weather feature that always sets me on edge.
OK - it took way too many hours (more than six, less than twelve) but I managed to get REAPER working as it ought. Whew! Wot a mess *that* was!
Busy in the morning
busy in the evening
busy in the middle of the afternoon
It all will follow
