I got a message from Elaine letting me know what kind of extra-dimensional trouble I'm in. I might have to go up to the Lodge. The old Lodge site. And see what's going on.
Elaine actually talked about troubles on Northside, but when I was doing the vocal, I switched it to Northfield. So there it is.
All modular synth here, going for non-euclidean extradimensional vibes, and a general feeling of doom. The drone is an Ebow sitting on the exposed springs of a spring reverb (Ekdahl Moisturizer) then dropped a couple octaves. Everything is is pretty much Eurorack with some modulation and filters and so forth. There are some burbling water samples from the BBC. Drums are from EZ Drummer, the "Twisted Kit" which has lots of clangy metal bits.
I have a massive cold, my voice is a croak. I’m definitely not singing for a couple days, so this is a spoken-word piece, more or less improvised from an outline in my head.
Northfield. Northfield is the worst part of town.
I mean, I lived in this town my whole life.
When I was in school all the worst kids were from Northfield.
The kids who slammed me up against my locker
and took my lunch money,
they were from Northfield.
It's run down. It's neglected, as they say.
Northfield is like skid row pretty much.
Then there's that creepy old Lodge.
It just sat there. I went to an event there once.
It was kinda run down.
Everything was shabby.
The furniture was frayed.
The carpets were frayed.
The hardwood floors were frayed.
Well now that's gone
But the guy who ran the place, he's still around.
I always see him sitting on a park bench hanging around.
He stares at me and he doesn't stop looking at you.
He keeps looking at you until you turn your head and walk away.
He's a weird guy.
I lived in this town my whole life.
I ain't lived nowhere else, this is it
There's people here just up and leaving.
They're just gone.
And nobody knows where
they don't tell anybody
they just disappear
Like I could see moving to Des Moines
to get a decent job or something
but it's weird.
Tell you what else is weird is the green glow
up on the hill
where the Lodge used to be.
Everybody can see it
It just sorta glows.
And I wonder about that guy
who used to run the Lodge.
I wonder about him.
Seems like people he knows
are the ones disappearing
just moving away
with no notice to anybody
And I wonder what that's about.
I wonder if I went up to the Lodge.
Would I see something.
Would I see something I wouldn't want to talk about.
Would I see that guy up at the Lodge
or where it used to be anyway, would I see him?
I don't know.
I might go up there
see what that green glow is about
and see if he's on the steps
where the Lodge used to be
waiting for somebody like me
to wander by
and check things out
I wonder. I might go see
what there is to see up there
I ain't got nothing else going on.
