I came up with a chord progression in Messiaen's third mode, and realised I didn't know where to go next except repeat it over and over again.
The slightly country feel to the guitar in its bastardised waltz and the endless repetition brought to mind one of my favourite novels, Cormac McCarthy's 'Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West'. Interestingly, this is a book that inspired several pieces during FAWM 2013.
So I went all in - threw in some strings (violins and cellos) to give a sort of fiddle-y western vibe, hid some mellotron low in the mix (because mellotron) and end it with some glockenspiel (because glockenspiel...and because I couldn't find a good tubular bell VST).
"The men as they rode turned black in the sun from the blood on their clothes and their faces and then paled slowly in the rising dust until they assumed once more the color of the land through which they passed."
