This is silly (blame it on sleep deprivation), but true. I was awakened at 3:00 AM this morning by a persistent double chirp, and the usual minute or so in-between just to make localization annoying. The bedroom smoke detectors were fine (I had changed the batteries when daylight savings ended), and the kitchen and living room were fine. Damn, it's the basement, and cold down there. I eventually found the guilty detector, replaced the battery but now there was one persistent chirp. Turns out that the powered CO2 detector over the furnace has a backup battery.
