from DC I rode to the end of the line
we drove to Gaithersburg taking our time
that night my friends bluegrass band had a show
in a health care center so I couldn’t go
so we hatched a plan I’d be the photographer
so I rode there with guys I didn’t know
when I walked in I saw a piano and sat down
I played a few notes and they liked the sound
they asked me to play songs I’d never heard
it didn’t cross their mind that was absurd
the pensioners filled in and took their spots
the didn’t have long left (but they)
hooted and hollered
to songs they knew of old
a lady asked my name but the band didn’t know
an awkward silence filled the room
the 5 of them matching blue, I was in plaid
but the music sounded great and everyone felt glad
these are the memories I hope I’ll still have
when I am 80 and near the end
when I’m no longer in my prime
will I remember playing in the pines
where did I sleep last night?
what did I eat for lunch?
have I been there before?
will I go there again?
