If this is the first song of ours you are listening to, stop. Don't let this be the way we meet... click on literally any other song of ours. 😀
Started with the idea of a song that just shouted ‘constant stimulation’ over and over. It seems like it’s what everyone wants us to want. There is no time to digest, we must be constantly stimulated by the next thing to blast into our orbit so we can say we have ticked it off the list. The digital debt builds up. I just don’t think I need all these things. I mean having most of the music that hads mattered from the past 50 years on my phone should be enough right. What a dream when I was travelling on the bus with a walkman!
I started with the drums and bounced them down so I could add bass and guitar which I then planned to bounce down further and then add a couple of tracks of vocals. Recording on 4 track cassette is a real art and I’ve forgotten what I had to do to attain that level of bounces. Probably go from one 4 track to another, but bouncing from the 4 track through a hi-fi into the spare channel just didn’t leave me with enough volume so I had to pair it down.
I used A strange Paper Jamz microphone and effects unit Tim got me for a birthday for the processed vocals. It’s in no way perfect but I like that you get a weird sound from it that goes with the idea of the song. Ever marching, processed, in a way mournful, but unsure of true feelings and if it has any.
The good thing about the 4 track is that you manipulate the mix much more than I would if I were recording on computer. Whereas I would set all of the volume changes while looking at the whole track - with a 4 track you have to react to any volume changes or mixes in the moment. With this one I was messing with the speed the tape was using by pressing the pause button, sometimes in time with the music and sometime just whenever.
It’s pretty messy but is essentially an idea that could be developed - good work if you sat through all of it!

Keep me entertained
Let my attention sway
Loosen up my brain
A moment will be lost
In my own thoughts
Drowned in Silence
Left to flounder
Nothing worse than
