This one is a bit of an amalgamation of sorts.
I had been coming back to this simple piano progression that I wanted to do something with all month. Then I realised it was pretty much the same as an uptempo track I'd started with beat and synths and slide guitars a while back, so thought it could be worth trying to marry the two together somehow. That proved rather challenging as the tempos were quite different!
Then the other day I saw a beautiful post from a friend of mine who has had some health issues lately and was poetically describing her struggle and need to be alone. I instantly thought it could be a perfect fit for what I'd already glued together and voila.
Another coincidence was realising that I'd previously played the same chord progression for another FAWM song years ago (on guitar), which actually used the same lyric "Grateful", so I just rehashed that melody! Don't you just love/hate when you discover you're just ripping off your own songs, whoops!
Oh and my friend also happens to be an incredible artist, who painted these beautiful 'lonely landscapes' artworks during her times of trouble, as seen in the song art.
I’ve been away, high on a hill, away from my friends, away from the world, and lonely.
Alone with my fear, my pain and despair, don’t want to be seen, or known. Alone.
I’m up here fighting fierce winds, want to be down there frolicking in the fair weather.
The winds drown me out and I’m starting to get tired.
Let them lift me up and fly me away. Fly me away
There’s a change in the air, I got the wind in my hair,
I’m well enough to hope, soon well enough to cope.
Well enough to feel again, well to feel grateful
For the sun. For the thunder, and the lightning.
For the four winds, the seasons and their changing.
For the moon and the mountains, plants and medicines.
For the waters, rain, rivers, creeks and the oceans
I am grateful to feel grateful
I am grateful to be grateful
