This song came out of mucking about with rhymes. I had been thinking for a while about using 'submarine' as a metaphor for those unforeseen disasters that life throws at us, until I had a change of heart and decided to make it about unexpected love.
And yes, placeholder lines did include "freshens me up just like Listerine"...
Again, warts and all!
Some of us chose our own quarantine
For all my defences you crept in unseen
How d’you get through, submarine?
I set watch but the watch went on leave
Minding my own finding safe company
Staying earthbound, feet on the ground
Hid in the crowd in case love came around
Opened me up like scopolamine
Helpless before I could intervene
Here you are, submarine
Swore to myself not to go there again
Saving the world from the wolves in my head
Cover the front, paint over the rust
Train to run but it’s still not enough
Submarine, oh submarine
How did the spark reach the magazine?
Tore down my walls like they’re polythene
Stick around, submarine
