Liner Notes

@ianuarius was playing with words in Slack and somehow "Genderic" popped out. I HAD to write a song with that title and it morphed into an honest-to-god pop-punk anthem that rolled a whole bunch of things together: women's rights and gay rights and trans rights and nonbinary rights and intersex rights and a lifetime of rage about all the stupid arbitrary gender rules about attire and hobbies I've had to deal with since I was a sensitive cisboy that took dance classes. I'm so freaking proud of it for all the reasons.

This one's probably gonna become a Ruckus Aquinas song at some point.

Lyrics

The color of your room at home
(It should be genderic) x2
The cut and color of your clothes
(It should be genderic) x2
Shirt buttons on the left or right
(It should be genderic) x2
Choices for makeup on your face and eyes
(It should be genderic) x4

It should be genderic
Not specific to gender
Cause colors don’t match to genders that’s silly
Men wearing pink
Shouldn’t make someone think
Cause it should be genderic
I know it’s genderic to me

The sports that you’re allowed to play
(It should be genderic) x2
How much you take home for your pay
(It should be genderic) x2
Whether you can marry who you love
(It should be genderic) x2
Whether or not you can raise children
(It should be genderic) x4

It should be genderic
Not specific to gender
Not much is restricted by he they or she
Girls kissing girls
Has a place in this world
And it should be genderic
I know it’s genderic to me

The box ticked off when you're hours of age
(It should be genderic) x2
The lows and the highs of your vocal range
(It should be genderic) x2
The style of your body hair
(It should be genderic) x2
What you have in your underwear
(It should be genderic) x4

It should be genderic
Not specific to gender
A gender does not have one type of body
It’s not just combos
Of hormones and chromosomes
It should be genderic
It should be genderic
It should be genderic
I know it’s genderic to me

I want to inject this song intro my veinssssssssssssssssss!!!

the vocal range line is THE MOMENT!!!

This rules, so catchy and I love those extra two repeats at the end of the chorus. Great message too, of course! And all the better for being wrapped up in such a deliciously punky package.

Awesome energy, awesome message! Cleverly constructed lyrics and catchy, too. Like @leslie, I also laughed at the vocal range line. Awesome stuff!

Catchy as hell! Such a great anthem. I love this, especially the "box ticked off" verse. I laughed so hard at that vocal range line. So good.

That refrain is incredible. One of the most shoutalongable things I've ever heard on FAWM. I looked forward to it coming around every time it did (and it did a lot). And it's based on a word that doesn't exist, but is instantly comprehensible. Look for it in next year's Oxford Word of the Year list.

This has the flavour and enthusiasm of a lot of the turn-of-the-millennium punk rock I enjoyed as a teenager, but with none of the angst and considerably more wisdom. Like the All-American Rejects, after they had a Snickers. And some life experience.

I really dug what you did with the pitch at the start of the chorus, vocally taking the refrain and sticking it on a rollercoaster. And the word painting brought a smile to my face.

The first line made me think of XKCD's colour survey, where a light-to-medium green with a hint of teal was described as unsure-whether-boy-or-girl-baby-room-colour. I think they were on to something.

I love this so much! Thank you for writing this one. <3

Very catchy...this is an ear worm! Great beat...like the short pauses. Good use of silence and bringing instruments in and out. The excellence is in all the little details you attended to. Love the fuzzy guitar.

  • @tcelliott  Feb 18

Oh, this is cool. I'm blown away at how seamless you made the title/hook work. I really wasn't gonna even try, but now I might have to take a stab at it. (Thanks for the note.)

Hahaha! It SHOULD be genderic! What a fantastic confection with a killer tag line (both lyrically and musically). Impressive word painting on the vocal range (and in general I love the sound of your voice every time you attack the title word at the top of the chorus). Great song!

  • @bethdesombre  Feb 17

I agree that we need that word. Excellent manifesto . . . and I like how the end of the chorus makes it personal ("I know it's genderic to me"). And nice job with the vocal range section -- you need to claim this week's challenge tag for that one.

  • @spencercondenser Feb 16

This is the catchiest thing I've ever heard in my life regardless of content... but the content is also fantastic. I will absolutely be singing "SHOULD BE GENDERIC! SHOULD BE GENERIC!" at random times throughout the day.

  • @expendablefriend  Feb 16

Yeah! This is super and I LOVE the energy of it. I can imagine a huge festival crowd singing along. I especially enjoyed the vocal range line 😀

  • @leka Feb 16

Great pop punk song with wonderful lyrics! Fun way to approach an important subject.

  • @shelleroo1  Feb 16
