Liner Notes

I was really excited when I selected this topic for tonight's skirmish and I had to avoid starting to write the song. This came fresh right after I posted the title at skirmish start time.

And yay me, this is my 14th FAWM song this year.

Lyrics

Ghosts of Saturday Night
(c) Sean McGaughey February 13, 2021

Intro Amx2 Dmx2

[Verse 1]
Am Dm
They ride into town on Saturday night.
Am Dm
In for fun or mischief, itching for a fight.
Am F
Honest folk have learned to stay home and quiet
Em Em7 Am
Fearful of the ghosts the Jones gang may incite.

[Chorus]
G Am
The only laws are the rifle and the dollar in this town.
G Am
When the Jones gang comes a riding in there's no lawman to be found.

[Verse 2]

Sal runs an honest bar-- more or less.
She rarely waters the whiskey, for cash paying guests
And the hay for the horses is sorta dry and sorta fresh
So the mounts will be ready for a midnight ride.

[Chorus]
G Am
The only laws are the rifle and the dollar in this town.
G Am
When the Jones gang comes a riding in there's no lawman to be found.

[Verse 3]

Sunday Morning through Friday this is a town of hope
But Saturday night the sheriff forgets he owns a rope.
And the townsfolk know that once a week thay best keep out of sight.
When the ghosts that haunt this town ride in on Saturday Night.

[Chorus]
G Am
The only laws are the rifle and the dollar in this town.
G Am
When the Jones gang comes a riding in there's no lawman to be found.

You did a fantastic job channeling the vibe of a film's lazy romantic threat in the Wild West. My favourite line might be "The only laws are the rifle and the dollar in this town," perhaps because in too many places little has changed. And the reverb you have on the lead guitar is something to aspire to.

Solid writing here. This suits your voice really well. I'm definitely sensing more resonance and twang on the guitar, but, I trust you for effects and stuff like that more than me 😁

    Fine storytelling...congrats!

One of my favourite Wild West themes in song was Ghost of a Texas lady’s man, have you heard of it?

  • @willow1 3 weeks

    Good story telling, ductapeguy!

Loves me a cowboy tune. Well, I used to hate them, then I found myself writing them too so I guess I was just hiding in the closet.
Nice twang, and great imagery in the lyrics. I could hear this being played over the closing credits of a Pale Rider type movie. 😀
    Congratulations on number 14.

I really, really, like this one. The key and guitar working give it great atmosphere. Really great lines, especially the 2nd verse.

Congrats on 14! You added a lot of character in these lyrics. We get such a clear picture of this town and the featured residents. Nice arrangement to enhance the feel of danger and mystery.

    Great job...love the western story.
The guitar with your vocals are a perfect match..congrats on song 14..

This is a great take on the theme. I have a rather keen feeling now to watch a western. And the guitars sound wonderful - Really capture the ambience and atmosphere of a western. Bravo on 14 songs!

Congrats on a great 14th song, and a great one at that! I need to go back and listen to more of yours! This is such a great story and the western music is absolutely fantastic!

    I love tumbleweed western songs!
Love that you held off to write this until 7pm
These are some of my favourite lines:
"She rarely waters the whiskey, for cash paying guests
And the hay for the horses is sorta dry and sorta fresh"
"But Saturday night the sheriff forgets he owns a rope."
    And that chorus is fabulous!
    Bravo Sean!
Thank you for making this happen!

Congrats on the win @ductapeguy !

I love the tone of those guitars. They make this sound somewhat mystical - which adds to the wonderful mood you've created.

    See You In The Shadows…

Very Saturday night in the Wild West. Minor keys are signaling danger. Note to self to incorporate minor keys.
Thank you for nice comments on my slice of life song.

  • @sunfire 3 weeks

I like it. Your vocals and the guitar support the story well.
