Liner Notes

EDIT: I put together a music video for the song:

https://youtu.be/vctRlB2KLqc

I've spent entirely too much time on this song, but I've had a lot of fun with it!

This came from @auditasum's Tarot challenge. My card, Strength, came from the Spacious Tarot: https://imgur.com/5Iok1ZQ

Lyrics

These Wide Open Spaces
©️2021 - words and music by Sharon Stepler

Through the stillness comes a canyon wren
It startles me with song
Unexpected as a sweet desert rain
When the day’s been too long

It lasts for moment, then it's gone

Chorus:
I found myself in these mountains
I lose myself in this sky
In these wide open spaces
I get by

I learned the hard way how the world closes in
When a heart’s about to break
Maybe I was wrong to think I'd leave it all behind
That was my favorite mistake

Out here I see the changes Time can make

CH:

Clouds overhead are shadow and light
Painting pictures on the wind
Swirling dust follows close behind my heels
I won’t go back that way again

Ain't no use in hanging on when something ends

CH:

mmm the vocal harmonies backing are lovely (I'm watching the vid). Perhaps I can persuade my fiddle to allow me to play slow like this. Our outback and its wide open spaces draws people who want to "leave it all behind". For many it works, for many more, it's a dead end. I hear that in your lyric and presentation ("ain't no use in hanging on..") Very good indeed.

Love that lonesome fiddle! There's so much beautiful natural imagery in your lyrics. It's hard to pick a favorite verse, but I particularly like your opening words. Wonderful vocals and harmony.

Can see why you recommended its really good! Nice video as well!

    Thoroughly enjoyed my listen !

For some reason I was unable to play the embedded link, which meant I got to watch your video. Inspirational. Your vocals are strong, and I like the 2-4 rhythm. Beautiful fiddle.and harmonies. Wonderful song. Buried in snow I’m jealous of where you live, but nice to see and hear how much you appreciate it.

Fiddle and strumming guitar conjures a traveling vibe. I really like the fiddle part between the chorus and the verse, and the contrast between finding and losing oneself. This song has a feeling of driving on the open road on a partly cloudy day.

Oooh yes I can FEEL this song, like I know what the temperature is like and I know how the wind feels. Beautiful instrumentation and your vocal counterpoints are absolutely gorgeous

This is lovely! Sweet melody, sweet fiddle, sweet vocals. Love "Clouds...painting pictures on the wind".

This is excellent! Time well spent. The recording itself is wide open from the opening note, and nice use of reverb, and that acoustic that sounds far away. Great lyric. This came together really great! OHHHh and an actual fiddle, or violin I guess depending on how you're dressed 😉 I really enjoyed this.

"Sweet desert rain" really captures the idea of Strength for me. Very visual lyrics.

  • @tseaver  Feb 10

Nice write! The way the open spaces work in the lyric is lovely.

Love this, has a lovely traditional feel to it, but is also rooted in now. Definitely worth the time spent on it.

Love the fiddle, I have to ask people nicely for that. And the harmonies,

I think you’re communicating the feeling of those spaces well. I like the middle verse, since we’ve always used the West to escape, in our myths about this country.

And the last verse ties the story up nicely. Well-written.

I like the harmonies that come in during the chorus. The fiddle has a very plaintive sound and helps set a mood that is evocative of the great outdoors..

  • @cindyrella  Feb 8

How lovely! Nice storytelling with wonderful touches throughout!

  • @susancantey  Feb 8

Loved it from the intro which said: "great song coming...listen up!" Universal message delivered with a vivid story picture.

I like the whole concept of this song, the idea of losing yourself in the wilderness. The key line for me is the one about the world closing in, not when a heart breaks but when it’s “about to break”, which is a very insightful observation. I love hearing some fiddle on FAWM! Your backing harmonies are a nice touch too.
