My daughter isn't on FAWM but she's a collaborator. When I told her the prompt for this skirmish was "Dancing With Sadness" she suggested a tango. This is what happened.
I need to see if there's anything appropriate for a backing track in Band-In-A-Box.
Besides, this is a first draft. I think the bridge could be better. But not bad for 45 minutes.
I dance with Lucille to a slow sad tango
We swoop and we glide and we slide across the floor
I spin her into a quick pirouette
The kind that we've done a thousand times before
The orchestra swells as it comes to conclusion
We dip and we rise and we gently sway
I lean down to kiss my beloved Lucille
But the record has stopped and she's fading away
It's been twenty years since Lucille left me
I don't have an answer to the question "Why?"
Gone are days in our walk-up apartment
We were poor as churchmice, Lucille and I
My job paid a pittance, we barely made rent
With pennies left over for soup and bread
But we had the record of the slow sad tango
And we'd dance through the evening like Ginger and Fred
And then one day she was gone
It really doesn't matter how
I was left alone with poverty and memories
I don't like to think about it now
There's not a moment that I don't miss Lucille
I remember the times we had to enjoy
I put on the record of the slow sad tango
And dance with her ghost with sadness . . . and joy.
