In October 2019, I did a surfing course in Portugal accompanied by my 45 year old son, who I had only met that year due to a DNA test. It was a great chance to do a bit of father son bonding.
While there, I didn't make a lot of music, but I was inspired to write the chorus of this song. But then it sat in my "Ideas - INBOX" since then. A couple of days ago, I thought I might have a go at finishing it for this FAWM and dug it out. Between yesterday and today the lyrics and a melody for the verses emerged.
Guitar is live, but the rest is thanks to Band in a Box. I would really have liked to add STAX style Horns to this. Please imagine the Mussel Shoals doing their thing on this one.
Intro: (G) (N/C)
Is your ride (C) clean? Is your ride (G) clean?
Ship-shaped and (C) streamlined
Know what I (G) mean?
Maybe the (Em) best one, I've ever (G) seen
But I ask you a (C) gain (D) (N/C)
Is your ride (G) clean?
(D) Waiting for the perfect wave to (G) turn up
I'm (Em) not so skilled but I try to do my (G) best
(Em) Those I lost are pounding on the (G) shoreline
While I'm (C) waiting for that monster swell to (D) crest
The (C) last bomb that I caught was a (G) barrel
I (Em) made the drop but a kook made me kick (D) out
So (C) nothing left to do but join the (G) line up
I (D) was so pissed you should have heard me (G) shout
When (D) off the rails I soon get raked (G) over
I (Em) seem to bail too often I ad(G)mit
My (Em) bottom turns could do with some im(G)provement
I (C) need more juice if I'm to make the (D) pit
They're (C) peeling today, it could be (G) bitchin'
But (Em) I've been at it since the dawn pat(D)rol
My (C) leash is trying to cut off my (G) ankle
Hey (D) yesterday I was really on a (G) roll
To(D)morrow maybe will be (G) pumping
(Em) Though low tide may involve that old rock (G) dance
(Em) Meanwhile my form is getting (G) sketchy
But I'm (C) gonna give it just another (D) chance
I'm (C) drifting too far from where I'm (G) heading
(Em) Getting close to the impact (D) zone
I was (C) way out of my depth in the (G) outback
But (D) now I'm in the riptide all a(G)lone
