Liner Notes

I set down to write a silly little song for kids about dinosaurs and something much darker came out.

Update: I linked the wrong song initially. It is fixed now.

Lyrics

When You’re a Grown-up © Feb 4, 2021 Sean McGaughey Key of C

No one ever asks, what's your favorite dinosaur?
When you're a grown up
No one asks how fast your can run in your new shoes
When you're a grown up
Nobody ever says, Oh my, how much you've grown
Well maybe they shouldn't go there
When you're a grown-up, it's like no one even cares

No one will bet you can't skip a stone ten times or more
When you're a grownup
No one wants to see your scab and kiss it better
When you're a grownup
Nobody will tuck you into bed and read a story
and turn on the hallway light.
It’s like grown-ups never get afraid at night.

No one ever asks if you want to climb a tree
When you're a grownup
No one saves perfect rocks from the seashore
When you're a grownup
No one listens when they ask How’re ya doin
And you lie, I’m OK.
I hope some grown-ups don’t act that way. .
I hope some grown-ups mean what they say. .

Thanks for you good words on my song "Uncle Tom & Sara Jane". It was written in Canada Where our 1st 3 kids were born. All of them listened to Raffi. Your "When your a grown-up" song reminds me of him. I hope you've done a album of kids songs. If you haven't, you should!

Hilarious. "How much you've grown -- you look pregnant. Your belly is huge! And you're a dude".

Wait, though, the right grownups do ask if you want to climb a tree. If they're drunk enough.

And I do things like save perfect rocks, sometimes.

And the "I'm OK" lie is fine with me. Because I've known a few people who respond to that question with a long list of complaints about insignificant things.

SO I guess I may be grown up after all.

Way too true - though no one stops us from climbing a tree either. And most people do care, I think - some of the time, when they have the spoons. Sometimes it is exhausting to care about too many people and causes at once.

I keep trying, it's not always easy. 😉

A really nicely observed lyric and nice melody. It sucks being a grown-up. T Rex for me, though always had a soft spot for pterodactyls.

How dare you come for me with this relatable content

  • @mikeskliar  4 weeks

There's alot of truth and wisdom in this song! nicely done! great idea and well done!

An--an inspiration. I love writing children's songs, but haven't done it for ages. Maybe I'll try one this season. Great job on this one! (Although I hate being reminded that I am, allegedly, a grownup).

Ha! Good stuff. Being a grown up sucks! Ugh. This is still fun even if it took a darker turn! So maybe it’s not a good kids song. Ironically this song should just be for us grown ups anyway!

  • @philkmills  4 weeks

Still sounds like a good kids' song to me...but you know kids much better than I do. 😀

  • @cleanshoes  4 weeks

This is both humorous and a little heartbreaking. It's a perfect tune to play on a ukulele, as it does have a bit of a "children's song" vibe, even if it does proclaim some sad truths (though I am thankful that not ALL of these are true for me in adulthood!). Oh, and I've always been partial to triceratops, for the record.

  • @lastnightilie 4 weeks

This is such a cute little anti-folk song. I guess you could look at it as dark (especially the end haha), but you could also look at it as an "Enjoy your childhood because it won't last" song, which could be seen as positive. Even though that isn't directly said, it's implied.

i love this song so much sean. when you played it last night on our call - i got a little teary eyed. btw my favourite dinosaur is the brachiosaurus (in case you were wondering) 😀

  • @timfatchen  4 weeks

Yes, it is darker, isn't it? Must be one of the things that a uke does, make dark things easier to enter the ears. I'm glad to say, I do find perfect rocks, i would like to still be able to climb a tree, and I enjoy or local dinosaurs a lot! Well put.!

  • @mhorning 4 weeks

Fun and melancholy at the same time. I agree with moonracoon, and would be tempted to write a short bridge between the 2nd and 3rd stanzas.

  • @jeffwhitmire47 4 weeks

Awesome!!! So much truth to these lyrics!! This is great!

  • @mikehex  4 weeks

Great song Sean, pretty sad though. I took comfort for a minute in the memory of my kids giving me the kind of loving affirmation you mention, but they're teens now.

It's possible nobody will ever ask me about my favorite dinosaur for the rest of my life (triceratops, by the way, no contest). This bothers me way more than it should.

  • @moonraccoon  4 weeks

This is great, Sean. Have you thought about maybe a bridge between the 2nd and 3rd stanzas?

  • @dudachris 4 weeks

This is great!! I want there to be a snarky sidekick adding details in. Like Jen with the Faithful Sidekicks kinda thing. I actually think @Seb could roll with that well and the Father/Son element would be AWESOME!

  • @kenmattsson  4 weeks

@ductapeguy It's a cute song. I also love the repeating line.
