AFP: I've wanted to collaborate with Holly and Tomo since the moment I heard their music. All I had to do to get it over the line, was to fly all the way to Tokyo and meet them! We had a fun night, and they both showed me and @judypie around Koenji, Tokyo. We drank red wine and saké and couldn't find any chocolate fish. We promised each other that we'd do a collab, and here we are! Arigatou gozaimasu, guys!
Ah yes, there's quite a few samples here and a lot of them are Yellow Magic Orchestra, but this was all born out of me recording a little jingle that played at a subway station in Tokyo; each station has its own jingle!
Will just add that we also love @adforperu 's music and wanted to collaborate with him for awhile 😀 He sent us this jingle and then we messed around with it in the KO pocket operator until we got something kind of interesting, sent it back to him and then back and forth a few times.
We moved to Koenji because it's kind of deep Tokyo, punk rock roots, rough around the edges, a lot of anarchists and communists and anti-gentrification movements, and honestly a lot of fun, so we tried to bring that into the lyrics, along with the contrast of the overarching everyday malaise of living in a work-driven city.
We move like the sheep
Too many rules to keep
A quilt of grays and black
The trains say click-clack
You feign a personal attack
When I say something’s whack
Has the moon killed the stars?
I’m fatigued by the lights of cars
Neon plucks the hollow velvet of the shadows
Up and down, up and down
But here we can get down
Coolest places around
Drinking, dancing the night away
I know where I like to play
Here we can get down
People defend their hate
Buildings haunt the landscape
“Let’s make money, eat cake, take”
Burn it down
But here communism’s cool
Disregard the shit you learned in school
We can get down
Anarchy in Koenji
We can get down
Everyone’s getting down in fucking Koenji
