I'm not particularly religious, although I went to a wonderfully liberal Christian school. We attended services every week on Friday mornings, and the music was always my very favorite part. Heck, sometimes those hymns, with the organ blaring and everyone singing together, were the highlight of my week.
Morning Has Broken was a favorite of mine. It focused on nature, creation, and beauty, which I've always found to be the bedrock of my own personal spirituality. Plus my dad played the Cat Stevens version at home pretty often so I was doubly familiar with it.
So, when challenged to "transform a nursery rhyme or folk tune" I decided to go with Morning Has Broken. I think it counts!
My lyrics are an attempt to compliment the original by pointing out that it's our love and perspective that makes each day unique and special. Not sure if that's abundantly clear, but I don't do this kind of think all that often and this is a first attempt. I'll get better.
I was born one misty morning
When all the world seemed far away
Nothing was different
Nothing was special
It was only another day
The world is reborn every morning
As the sun sheds light on it all
Nothing is different
Nothing is special
It's only daylight come to call
Our love is perfect when we heed it
It's our connection to all that we feel
Making each new day so very real
