Reporting fake new members

Skip to the bottom

  • @fuzzy  Jan 22

    Hey, a bunch of new "people" have signed up and they're merely advertising.
    Is there any way to report them so they can be cleaned out?

  • @zecoop  Jan 22

    @fuzzy: Let @jendistad @burrsettles @ericdistad or @nancyrost know...

    ZeCoop - "Fake FAWMer since 2011"

  • @carleybaer  Jan 22

    Do any of them have good #easyshed potential?

  • @nancyrost  Jan 22

    I'm combing through them now. Kind of a disappointing bunch from an #easyshed perspective.

  • @zecoop  Jan 22

    @carleybaer - ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ (can't breathe.....)

  • @tuneslayer2018  Jan 22

    Well make sure you keep an eye open. #easyshed really changed everything.

  • @tuneslayer2018  Jan 22

    Hm though. If @zecoop is a fake Fawmer we could write songs about him.

    Although "Fake FAWMer since 2011" kind of rules out him being a new fake account.

  • @candle  Jan 22

    That should be a song tittle @zecoop

    See You In The Shadowsโ€ฆ

  • @dragondreams  Jan 22

    The apology letter (email) I got from @easyshed is still one of my prize (virtual) possessions! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜Ž

  • @helenseviltwin  Jan 22

    @zecoop - or me. I'm a mod too.

    Worth noting that the way the site works means that we don't delete the spammers immediately, but suspend them, so they can't post, so many of the ones that the mods have already suspended them might look normal to you, so please don't worry if there's spammers that you've reported that still exist.

  • @zecoop  Jan 22

    @helenseviltwin - 10 years and I didn't know this?! Thanks for the intel. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • @helenseviltwin  Jan 22

    @zecoop - stealth mod ๐Ÿ˜

  • @zecoop  Jan 22

    @helenseviltwin - I mean itโ€™s easy for you to SAY youโ€™re a mod here... Next thing you know, youโ€™ll try to tell me youโ€™re in some awesome band with someone like... oh... say... @expendablefriend and then Iโ€™ll know for certain you are just making stuff up. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜Ž

  • @nancyrost  Jan 22

    @helenseviltwin is a mod *and* a rocker.

  • @stephenwordsmith Jan 22

    One moment while I get Ray Columbus' 'She's a Mod' out of my head.

  • @cts  Jan 23

    Wow - so much that happens behind the scenes. I don't know who this #easyshed entity is, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to. Thanks gang for keeping things safe here, you heroes and sheroes!

  • @robynmackenzie  Jan 23

    Proposal: FAWM reality show where they all compete to become the next #easyshed.

  • @dragondreams  Jan 23

    @cts - Craig, easyshed are a genuine Australian shed company, but a spammer set up an account without their knowledge. It spawned a ton of songs, and they were listed as a collab partner. They won FAWM. And their sales manager loved all of them when we got in touch. ๐Ÿ˜‚

  • @gubna Jan 23

    I remember this from last year. Itโ€™s so weird! Why do they bother?! Does anyone use them as inspiration? Lol!!!

  • @cts  Jan 23

    Me: *mouth a-gaped*

  • @carleybaer  Jan 23

    @robynmackenzie hah! "Do YOU have what it takes to do NOTHING and still garner dozens of songwriting credits because of your inexplicably charming spam account??"

    I'm suddenly wondering, since they have credit on all those songs, if they'll ever decide to use any of them in their ad campaigns. *hastily scribbles "music used in EasyShed commercial" onto bucket list*

  • @robynmackenzie  Jan 25

    @dragondreams Got in touch???

  • @zecoop  Jan 25

    @carleybaer - they are welcome to use mine since it is actually about snakes, lol

  • @dragondreams  Jan 25

    @robynmackenzie - I emailed Easyshed. Their sales manager responded. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  • @robynmackenzie  Jan 26

    @dragondreams Thatโ€™s amazing. I freakin love this community.

  • @carleybaer  Jan 26

    @zecoop oh yeah! I remember that one. Mine was just about writing songs, because by the time I got to it all the good shed metaphors (shedaphors?) were taken.

  • @fuzzy  Jan 27

    Hey, check this one out.
    I laughed out loud.

  • @zecoop  Jan 27

    @fuzzy - sounds legit. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • @carleybaer  Jan 27

    โ€œCommunity gold...โ€ Iโ€™ll say ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

  • @helenseviltwin  Jan 27

    @fuzzy - that is an example of one that I had already suspended.

  • @zecoop  Jan 27

    @helenseviltwin - You can take out the spammer, but you can't take out their "community gold". ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • @keithcuts  Jan 27

    Easy shed was the best part of fawm 2019. I laugh just thinking of some of those gems

  • @carleybaer  Jan 27

    "When had you cleaned the duct last? Don't remember?"

    Maybe @totalduct can be the new #easyshed...

  • @robynmackenzie  Jan 27

    @carleybaer Alright, time to write a song about a Total Duck.

  • @carleybaer  Jan 27

    @robynmackenzie I definitely don't remember the last time I had cleaned the duck! ๐Ÿ˜

    It's crazy, we got spammers spamming each other

    @onlinefreetranslator left a message "Great Fawm" on the soundboard of @itsmonika

  • @pipewrench67  Jan 30

    @oddbod awww

  • @donna  Jan 30

    @zecoop I agree about the onlinefreetranslator. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Was actually disappointed to see that the ad for the best wireless printer for home was spam. Just yesterday I was searching online for a good wireless printer. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Was hoping a few FAWM folks could advise. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @zecoop  Jan 30

    FAWM Spam-bots are watching @donna ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  • @ustaknow Jan 30

    Hey @dragondreams when did this #easyshed thing happen? What year? I think I remember folks saying they were using spam as write-prompts, some time back.

    That's a great FAWM legend, story... should be a subtitle in the FAQ's ๐Ÿ˜€ FAWM-Legends of past time worthy notes.

    Anyway, -- I just happened to have the time and read this thread, and "just never knew" -- I guess you gotta read the threads here to really know what's going on!!

  • @mdavisto  Jan 30

    Clearly a spam account, but interestingly, has been wished a good FAWM by another spam account. They're getting sneaky.

    I just don't understand why; this is such a niche community, it's not like anyone here would ever use any of these services.

  • @zecoop  Jan 30

    @ustaknow - Easyshed was last year. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @ustaknow Jan 30

    @zecoop -- thanks! Yup, I remember.

    -- Hey, "I'm not fake, I'm just a little shallow" ๐Ÿ˜€ (I feel a Lyric coming!)

  • @dragondreams  Jan 30

    Here's the email I received back from #easyshed last year:

    "...Hello DD

    You may not believe it, but we didnโ€™t actually make this spam account. Unless someone in our team is having a laugh.

    We had one of your fellow FAWM members notify us of this forum thread on Facebook. None of our team have heard of FAWM before. But we have all had a great time reading the amusing lyrics and listening to the songs that have been created.

    P.S. EasyShed cannot condone the use of our sheds for satanic rituals or hiding corpses, but we can guarantee that whatever your inclinations, they will be hidden for a long time! With our Lifetime Warranty on all of our Aussie-made sheds, you can put your wife in the freezer, bury some bodies, or just store your lawn mower. Just watch out for the spidersโ€ฆand the police..."

  • @ustaknow Jan 30

    @dragondreams "wow" that's great; thank you for posting! If that's not special, don't know what is. I love Oz... I gotta get there some day when am up to a 15 hour flight ๐Ÿ˜€

    Some apocalypse indie movie maker needs to use those sheds and these songs and make a Canne Film entry! I know..., -- Kangaroo Porta-Potties, "Johnny on the Spots" for the new "homeless" animals! (Not PC probably, but in the moment seems humorous.)

  • @helenseviltwin  Jan 30

    @mdavisto - I assume it helps with SEO in some way maybe?

  • @mdavisto  Jan 30

    @helenseviltwin I mean, yeah, it gives the accounts apparent legitimacy. But that means that there's humans behind them, who've done enough research to know what to say ... and having done that research, they still think this is a good target?

  • @postcardhelicopters  Jan 30

    @mdavisto - this was happening a lot during the off season - one spam account commenting on another one - and I am wondering if it really is a "person" behind it because it was really clumsy but quickly got better. Meaning, not in a way a non-English speaker would learn the language.

    The goal isn't to learn how to post just on FAWM, the goal is to train bots / networks how to infiltrate online communities to garner reputation points in order to ultimately sway public opinion.

  • @pipewrench67  Jan 30

    @postcardhelicopters So, should we be responding to these posts, on these posts, with DADAesque rhetoric to skew the Matrix?

  • @postcardhelicopters  Jan 30

    @pipewrench67 - Maybe so! They clearly won't out themselves by speaking with a LISP. As end users, we likely don't have a SNOBOL's chance in hell of defeating them on our own. It's probably just best to have a cup of JAVA and just keep your eyes open and be aware they are out there and that their mission is to sway opinion.

  • @mdavisto  Jan 30

    @postcardhelicopters i think you're right. We're all reacting to the "great fawm" comment, but the bot is actually just copying and pasting the end of the previous comment.

  • @fuzzy  Jan 30

    One word; Skynet.

  • @sapient  Jan 30

    Ah.... EasyShed.... ๐Ÿ˜

  • @pipewrench67  Jan 30

  • @elainedimasi  Jan 31

    @postcardhelicopters If only the botmasters knew that we don't have reputation points or ups-of-thumbing on here! - Ha, now I want to send my own posts through a translator.

  • @robynmackenzie  Jan 31

    @dragondreams That P.S. has me rolling. ๐Ÿ˜

  • @pipewrench67  Jan 31

    @postcardhelicopters so your saying we should sprinkle cod(e) amongst our, commentary? Perhaps introduce new words and use them often to skew the parsing?

  • @calumcarlyle Feb 12

    Is @easyshed still an active fawm member then? Think Iโ€™ll check if they have done any collabs so far this year...

  • @calumcarlyle Feb 12

    PS, doesnโ€™t look like it ๐Ÿ˜ž

    Snoring devices!

  • @helenseviltwin  Feb 18

    Dealt with - ta

  • @tippergore Feb 18

    Fake members?

  • @kable  Feb 18

    @tippergore spam bots that are advertising products like flowers or whatever. The accounts typically donโ€™t have a picture, and usually post 0 songs.

  • @pipewrench67  Feb 18

    @standup I would like to purchase some snoring devices,what are the available options?

  • @standup  Feb 18

    @kable right, unlike tipper gore or nic cage, who have both posted multiple songs. So they can't be fake.

    @pipewrench67 Here ya go!

  • @fuzzy  Feb 18

    "Top snoring solutions in Australia."
    So they only work if you're in Australia, then?

  • @stephenwordsmith Feb 18

    They're based in the US. If they can hear people snoring in Australia, then there truly must be a problem.

  • @kable  Feb 18

    @standup good point. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • @autoclamp  Feb 18

    I speak American English, but my snoring is distinctly Australian. I will investigate the efficacy of this solution and get back to you.

  • @standup  Feb 18

    @fuzzy If the science of the snoring devices is based on the direction of gravitational spin, they may well be useless here in the Northern Hemisphere...

  • @famjam Feb 18

    I am not sure what constitutes a spammer vs someone who meets your criteria. I am not even sure what fawm is. I followed a link that someone posted and came here, and I noticed a good amount of posts looking for collaborations. I am heavy into collabs, so I've posted a small fraction of my collabs here. I have commented on songs I've listened to and commented otherwise as well. I am actually working with 4 people I've met from here. Other than that I have no idea how to qualify since I don't really know what fawm is other than this site, It's not real obvious.

  • @standup  Feb 18

    @famjam the idea behind FAWM is that we're writing brand new material during the month of February, 2020, and posting brand new songs as they are finished.

  • @pipewrench67  Feb 18

    @fuzzy @standup you mean they are not devices that snore, hmm I'll have to rethink.

  • @quork  Feb 18

    Can anyone post their partner snoring that we can use as a bass track? Confidentiality of the source will be respected.

  • @standup  Feb 18

    @pipewrench67 I think you owe it to community to order a snoring device and report!

    @quork I'll ask my wife if she can put a recorder on my side of the bed...

  • @famjam Feb 18

    @standup Ok so I guess I will qualify once some of these tracks are finished. Some of them the people I am working with already had a start on before I joined them, so it may not qualify as brand new. I am used to putting in the work and having quality productions (I think), rather than stacking up a bunch of quantity with hastily put together demos. One thing that occurs to me here is how does someone know if they want to work with another unless some of their work gets showcased? It seems like you could be shooting yourself in the foot to limit the showcasing. I actually host an online music collaboration group and that is exactly the reason we allow showcasing (within reason). So I guess if I qualify as a spammer, let me know and I will leave. If i want to attract possible collaborations how else to do this than to showcase some of what I've done. Is it really that precious?

  • @famjam Feb 18

    I mean, if it really hurts someone's feelings to have my work (or other) showcased, just let me know and I will oblige with an exit. Do we really have nothing better to do with our time than to police like this? Seems a bit silly if you ask me.

  • @standup  Feb 18

    @famjam I think this thread was more about the "fake" members who are just an advertisement for a product, like escort services and snoring devices.

    Do you feel like anybody's accusing you? Hope not.

    Yep, some of these songs are hasty demos. A lot of people are recording straight into their phone and posting it here. The idea being to write songs, not post finished product.

  • @pipewrench67  Feb 18

    @famjam I think @standup was just giving you a synopsis of what goes on here, Your fine the spammers we are discussing are really just spammers, not musicans or producers or poets or noise makers or whatever.
    Like these;
    @defendersecurity @jbhworks1 @mealami @tejaswinimakeup

  • @famjam Feb 18

    Ok cool. Just making sure. I have met and am working with some fine people through this site. So far they seem pretty happy with what I have offered in the way of help. I am a writer and musician, but of late I have been doing more production work and helping others bring their work to fruition. If you listen to the tracks I have posted on my profile you will see we've put in a bit of work, so it is more about quality than quantity. It does seem like a good resource, for both contacts, and critique. One thing we stress in our group is ear training, for writing, flow, arrangement, and production. Looking for things that flag the listener's ear. What I always tell the people I work with (as a producer) is I try to make sense with my feedback. It's not just arbitrary. It makes it easier to accept and agree to, but if you hear my reasons and don't agree, then keep what you've been thinking. It's usually based on a trained ear. At least that is the goal.

  • @stephenwordsmith Feb 18

    The origins of FAWM may help you make some sense of why it currently looks as it does.

    It was originally just 4 guys setting themselves a challenge to produce the content - the iconic 14 songs in 28 days. Word spread, and we attracted more participants. Collaborations were a byproduct; their genesis was before my time, but when I joined in its 4th year (a leap year) the concept of collaborating with a stranger was still quite novel; this practice was offered as a suggestion for your "14.5th" song. The members took to it, and it soon became an ingrained part of FAWM culture, and the basis for many challenges.

    When looking for potential collab partners, we tend to check out the songs they've already posted during the challenge, or follow the links in their profiles. We tend to baulk at 'posted' songs being pre-existing ones, as the idea of the challenge is first and foremost about using the month to 'go after inspiration with a club' and post the fruits of your songwriting in February!

  • @famjam Feb 18

    @pipewrench67 Ah I went and looked at those profiles, you mentioned. Def are not music related. I haven't seen any of them, but I guess some of you all have been bumping into them. I see now.

  • @pipewrench67  Feb 18

    @famjam it's pretty loose around no hard/fast "rules" other than make shit and don't be a dick, if you can abide you'll be fine. I'll stop over later and and check your stuff out.

  • @ductapeguy Feb 19

    How did I miss this thread? @carleybaer Do you think I should write a song about @totalduct?

  • @helenseviltwin  Feb 19

    I just found one about yoga for divers. Niche...

  • @famjam Feb 19

    @pipewrench67 Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of these spammers. Guess it's just luck that I have not been hit by them.

  • @famjam Feb 19

    @standup A person doesn't know until they ask, now do they? Now I know. I get the idea of mass writings, and it's a good one. I've heard that McCartney and Lennon left a lot of songs on the cutting room floor. A lot got discarded before they found their hits (and then took those and produced them). One of those discarded writings became a hit for Badfinger. I used to be a strong vocalist before cancer took my voice. I do still write melodies on the keyboard, but I am in high demand for production so I've been focusing on that a bit.

  • @helenseviltwin  Feb 19

    [mod hat on] FYI - We have never kicked anyone out because they didn't understand the rules. If someone is thought to be using FAWM solely to promote their pre-written music, or otherwise isn't really in the spirit of FAWM, they'll likely get an email from the mods pointing them to the FAQs. We've not really had any problems with these sorts of people. Either they've understood and joined in with FAWM, or they've realised it wasn't for them and disappeared.

    We do get a lot of people signing up solely (I assume) to help a company's SEO. They frequently spam the forums with ways to recover passwords and other stuff that is clearly just going to get deleted. [/remove mod hat]

  • @ustaknow Feb 19

    I love this thread. It shows the best of FAWM in real time.
    -- So, no reporting fake "old" members ๐Ÿ˜‰ hahhh!

    I wonder, has there ever been a mistake on this? Hahhh!, just wondering. If one came in over the top paranoid with being anonymous with the ID thing and no Bio (like I Sea, or saw a lot of ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) and wrote funky Jingles... ? Hmmm, ever happen? Anyone know?

    Anyway, just wondering.

    The last half of this thread is well worth anyone reading.

    Welcome "famjam" ... it's different here, but in a good way, like getting a flue shot or stitches, in time it all works out.

    Just an fyi, I was watching you (as many do here, watch, observe), when you first arrived and some of the reaction and wondered how it would work out for you. Anyone who can navigate this far is likely special in some way that lingers on, if even not every year, -- as you can.

    Also, we do have a Shameless Self Promotion thread/forum:

    Have at it.

    All above is just excellent input. All I might add is, as IRL it can take 1-2 years to figure out where you are and whom with.

    So, like a new job? The person with "my door is always open" hour one, day one, -- may not be your new BFF in a year or two. But it works out ๐Ÿ˜€ Folks agree to disagree and avoid that krappe "here". Sometimes there's a little "over spray", but FAWM starts new every year. So, expect to see things re-addressed every year. For me, it can be a really good thing since some need to see things 10 x's b4 gett'in it.

    So derUgo! ๐Ÿ˜€ ... just say'in, just say'in
