Fave albums from the twenty teens

  • @scottlake 6 weeks

I have a pretty wide range of musical tastes, and this decade, I have a way to look through my music collection and select which ALBUMS I liked the most, because I have my entire 1100+ CD collection ripped to 192 kbps mp3 files, with folders by artist, as well as plenty of downloads.

I decided not to try to pick a 10 best, but just go through the folders and pick the stuff that has stuck with me and I go back to for various reasons. You may not find a bunch of artists you know - many of these I have settled on because of lyrics or production or just plain delight.

A few that didn't make this list that I don't own yet but I keep going back to on Spotify/Amazon Music: A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead, Plini (everything this band does - sheesh!), Sun Structured by Temples

My favorite albums from the twenty-teens in general alphabetical order going through my music folder:

@sailingmagpie we had A Moon Shaped Pool also. I just don’t own a physical copy of it yet.

  • @scottlake 6 weeks

I actually like most of the albums on both of your lists. I pretty much limited my list to the albums I purchased. We have a killer used CD source locally, if you are willing to dig ($0.49 per disc) and my CD collection bloomed beyond control this past decade, hence my effort to rip the whole collection - and donate the discs I didn't want to keep permanently to Goodwill. At the same time I ripped them, I cataloged them in libib.com and app, because when you are doing modern day crate digging, and you have a collection of over 1000 discs, it's hard to remember if you already have something. So I can check live if I have something.

  • @atitlan  5 weeks

Lots of stuff I know and like on people's lists, and an awful lot I've never heard of that will be added to Spotify playlists over the duration of FAWM - hopefully some new favourites to discover.

Noticed some recurrences of St Vincent and Tame Impala so far.

  • @atitlan  5 weeks

@vomvorton Didn't expect to see The Beths - listened to that quite a bit when it came out.

  • @guatecoop  5 weeks

@atitlan i was going to add blonde redhead’s 23 to my list, which is an absolute favorite of mine, but that was 2010. I love that band!

  • @atitlan  5 weeks

    @guatecoop There's a couple of 2010s on my list; I went with 2010-2019.

Penny Sparkle is definitely the one that connected with me, the next one Barragan(?), while it's still good, lost something compared to PS. I'm not especially familiar with 23 - will have to spend some time with it.

  • @scottlake 5 weeks

    @atitlan yes to Temples

  • @ampersandman  5 weeks

@atitlan Surprised to find Penny Sparkle on any list. I totally hated it, because I'm such a fan of Blonde Redhead's 90s/2000s work. It ruined that band for me, although Barragàn was a little more interesting again. This once again goes to show how differently art is perceived ...

  • @mikeskliar  5 weeks

it's interesting to see threads such as these, and, going thru all the albums mentioned by everyone to date (probably about, what, 80-100 albums listed), realizing that I have listened to (and own as well) exactly two albums from all those listed! (can anyone guess which two, before I make an attempt to list my possible choices?)

  • @gubna 5 weeks

Bryan Beller Scenes From The Flood

    Steven Wilson’s solo albums

    Flying Colors albums

  • @looprication  4 weeks

The albums that have really stuck with me:

Wye Oak / The Louder I Call the Faster it Runs
    TORRES / Sprinter
Radiohead / A Moon Shaped Pool
    Slowdive / Slowdive
    Jon Hopkins / Immunity
Giorgia Angiuli / In A Pink Bubble
Lana Del Rey / Born To Die (NFR! is amazing as well)

    and anything by FKA Twigs

Agree I can't pick a favorite Grimes from the decade. Have you heard the one that's coming out next month?! Fantastic.

  • @guatecoop  4 weeks

@looprication , I also enjoyed the Slowdive album more than I thought that I would.

  • @aesthetic72  4 weeks

I loved Amelia Curran/Spectators, Daft Punk/Random Access Memories, all of Gregory Porter's stuff, really digging Petros Klampanis/Irrationalities just before the end of 2019.

I think that PK's Irrationalities is a perfect album. Followed by Daft Punk's RAM. I mean, it's very hard to top anything Nile Rodgers.

  • @downburst  4 weeks

I'm too lazy to make a list, but I think the album I keep coming back to is Carla Morrison's "Dejenme Llorar." Simple, rich, beautiful, mysterious.

  • @looprication  4 weeks

@guatecoop - I'd been waiting forever to see them live, couldn't believe they were *that* *good* in person. Also pleasantly surprised that the album turned out to be one of their best, IMHO. Sounded to me like they never left 😉

  • @atitlan  3 weeks

@ayehahmur I first came across 'Sun Structures' by Temples when I was looking for something in a similar vein to Tame Impala's 'Lonerism'. It's interesting to see the direction each band has taken since.

If you don't already know them. give Pond and Grumbling Fur a try.

  • @scottlake 3 weeks

@resonance if you want really early Mutemath, check out Earthsuit

  • @ayehahmur  3 weeks

@atitlan I checked them out because they were playing a festival and loved that they were so solidly into the 60s psyche thing.
    Thanks for the extra recs!

  • @resonance 2 weeks

@scottlake I listened to TROMS by Earthsuit all the way through and I liked that a lot ! They do a pretty good version of 'Once In A Lifetime' too so thanks for the suggestion !

If you're digging Holy Holy, you've got to listen to 'When The Storms Would Come' 'cause it's a total guitar album. Probably my favourite by them.
