How can I access archives for other years?

  • @sherrycanary  Mar 22

    I know I saved them...but don't know where

  • @donna  Mar 22

Sherry, do you have a Search function (e.g. a magnifying glass icon) in the menu at the top of your computer/laptop's screen? If so, click on that and type something like FAWM or FAWM archive. That should bring up a list of archives (if you originally saved them on your computer).

  • @johnstaples  Mar 22

@sherrycanary as far as I know FAWM does not save them but many of us have had success using the Wayback Machine. Try the link below and then you should be able to pick a year and then a day and see most if not all of your stuff. I don't think any songs will be archived there but the text usually is.*/

  • @johnstaples  Mar 22

You will need to copy that entire link and paste it in your brpwser because FAWM is breaking the link into two pieces. 😏

  • @johnstaples  Mar 22

For example, here is your 2018 page,

and here is your 2017 page,

    2016 page,

and it appears it goes back to 2009 for you! Good luck!

  • @karlsburg25  Mar 22

I never archived my 2014 FAWM @johnstaples would there be a genius link to get me there???

  • @karlsburg25  Mar 22

Oh i think i found it. Can we still export from there in word file do you know??

  • @johnstaples  Mar 22

Hey @karlsburg25 ! No, I don't think the archive export will work since that requires being logged in and these are no longer log-in-able pages! Here is your 2014 link and I just verified at least your first three songs are there and prolly all of them.

  • @sherrycanary  Mar 22

    Thanks John
Unfortunately I didn't archive last year.
Do you know if I can get into file hosting for 2018?

  • @johnstaples  Mar 22

@sherrycanary if the links above don't help you might ask @ericdistad to see if he can help.

  • @jwhanberry  Mar 22

@sherrycanary @johnstaples File hosting is in server flux. See this thread: Eric is on it.

  • @berni1954  Mar 22

Will all the music files I have currently uploaded to the FAWM site disappear next year? (or before?)

  • @johncrossman  Mar 22

@berni1954 the site usually refreshes at some point, sometimes as late as mid-late January. When that happens, the links all go away.

But the hosting itself would be up to @ericdistad if you use the fawm file hosting, since he's the file hosting guru and all around great guy. 😀

  • @guatecoop  Mar 23

Wow, I never even knew that this existed....the archives. Why does it exist?

  • @donna  Mar 23

Oh my goodness! That link is amazing! I've been able to track down my FAWM pages over several years. Unfortunately, most of the actual lyric threads are locked, and for those that aren't, and that have songs, the music doesn't play. But at least I know what old titles to look for on my iMac (where I'd kept the bulk of my lyrics until a couple of years ago). I feel inspired to go back to a few old drafts and do some revising. There might be a few flecks of gold in those hills. 😉

  • @johnstaples  Mar 23

@donna , if your songs are locked it is because you locked them during/after FAWM; the Wayback Machine cannot archive locked pages.

Regarding the music, the FAWM player will not work on these archive pages because they are static captures of the pages. However, if the FAWMer included an external link to the song OR used an external service like Bandcamp or Soundcloud AND the song still exists at that location, you can listen to the song! For example, go to Nadia's 2015 FAWM song page for Winter's Memory,

Now if you copy that link text (NOT copy link as that will include the stuff) and paste that into your browser you will hear her song playing!

Unfortunately, the link may be more difficult to find or not available and also the songs may have been removed from wherever they were stored. But this is an awesome resource to at least give you a shot at retrieving these old items!

If you need help on a specific song/year let me know and I'd be happy to give it a try for you.

  • @donna  Mar 23

Hmmmm. I certainly don't recall locking those lyrics, John, but your explanation makes sense. There are a couple of songs I'd like to hear. I'll check the archives again, and then will let you know which songs they are. Thanks for the offer. 😀

I'm mainly sorry that I can't access those lyrics with the lock icon, because I lost some of them in a computer crash a few years ago.

  • @johnstaples  Mar 23

I guess it could be something FAWM did on your songs but I checked my 2018 page and nothing is locked except the two I know I locked.

Another thing to consider...the Wayback Machine grabs whatever it "sees" when it visits the site so if songs are locked it will archive them as locked. If the next day the FAWMer unlocks them they will still be saved in the archive as locked. It is a snapshot of that moment in time.

  • @johnstaples  Mar 23

Likewise, after the songs have once again been unlocked, if the Wayback Machine scans the pages again it will store that copy as unlocked.

When it scans and how much it scans are pretty much random.

You might check with @ericdistad to see if he has a backup of the FAWM database for the year in question and your lyrics would still be inside that.

  • @donna  Mar 23

Thanks, John. I'll do that. I'm pretty sure I never locked the lyrics. I'd have had no reason to do so.

  • @johnstaples  Mar 24

@donna I know some people who work toward marketing their music will lock them after FAWM concludes to keep them private so I thought you might do that. If not Eric might know why your old pages were locked.

  • @sunnymae  Mar 24

Wow this is fascinating. I've been wanting to find a song of Willie's that he started in a morph chain a few years ago. I roach the next song in the chain. I wonder if he had it on Soundcloud or another web host.

  • @boyatheart  Mar 24

@johnstaples Thanks for all the great info and wayback links.
It was great to be able to read the comments from 10 years ago! Shame I locked several songs after FAWM for a couple of years, so could not read those ones.
Anyway, it brought back some nice memories and useful insight into my own FAWM history. 😀

  • @donna  Mar 24

@johnstaples, yes, I thought I might have locked them for that reason, but I don't remember having done so. I certainly haven't locked any for the past few Challenges, and these are when some of my - I like to think - better 1st drafts were written. 😉 But I'll check with Eric.

  • @johnstaples  Mar 24

    @donna fingers crossed!!!
