Fake It Challenge!

  • @metalfoot  Jan 2019

This FAWM, I'd like to propose a game idea I came up with, called the "Fake It Challenge". Maybe some of you have seen 'fake books' where the lyrics and the chords (and sometimes a little snippet of the melody) are given but not a fully fleshed out tune or song.

Likewise, the premise to this game is that I'd provide the participants with a fully finished song -- lyrics and chords all in place, but NO MELODY. (ie, a PDF or a GIF/JPG of a page of a song) Then the game participants would each record their own version of what they think the song would sound like-- and add 1 to their collection of songs!

Does this sound interesting to any of you?

    EDIT for clarity:
I'm not regarding this as a 'collab' but rather as a game. Tag your completed songs #fakeit and I'll come listen but no need to add me as collaborator. Cheers!

  • @fuzzy  Jan 2019

    Yup.

  • @postcardhelicopters  Jan 2019

    ::: raises hand :::

I'd like to give it a try!

  • @fuzzy  Jan 2019

I'd appreciate it if you didn't give a time signature as well.

  • @metalfoot  Jan 2019

No time sig. Just, literally, the lyrics and chords (chords are aligned to words, which makes this a little different from say, Explore The Core)

  • @jamkar  Jan 2019

    I can do this.

  • @nikke88  Jan 2019

I'm totally in for this. Sounds like fun thing to try.

  • @pearlmanhattan  Jan 2019

    I'll give it a try

  • @unkept  Jan 2019

    Sounds fun Alex.

  • @snoozin  Jan 2019

Interesting, sounds like fun. I recently put a poem written by my grandfather in the 1940's to music. It was a great experience for me.

one caveat: i'm planning on getting my recording computer going before month's end, so i may find myself unable to complete my mission.

  • @jaegerin  Feb 2019

That sounds cool - I'd like to try too!

  • @metalfoot  Feb 2019

OK. My plan is to post the lyric w/ chord sheet later today (tomorrow for those of you halfway around the world from me!). I'm trying to come up with a suitably good lyric to make it worth your while.

  • @tunecat Feb 2019

    Interested

  • @infilktion Feb 2019

    Sounds like fun!

  • @kahlo2013  Feb 2019

    OK, here we go.

    or
    http://bythefont.com/alex/fawm2019/fa...

Here's the song -- you have to figure out the melody and sing it!

  • @metalfoot  Feb 2019

PLEASE DON'T ADD ME AS COLLABORATOR. Just tag the song #fakeit

  • @oblivionratula  Feb 2019

Woot! This is going to be fun.

  • @metalfoot  Feb 2019

Also, if you do this and you want to link your song in this thread, it'd be fun.

  • @jcooper  Feb 2019

Cool. I ll give it a bash

  • @embersofautumn Feb 2019

    I'm in!

  • @splittybooms  Feb 2019

sure - need something to get me off the ground

  • @factorytale Feb 2019

I think I'll do it as well. Sick of my own words and story

  • @factorytale Feb 2019

I've changed the chords a bit couldn't make it fit. Now I need to record it

  • @factorytale Feb 2019

@metalfoot here´s my version. Maybe a bit fast, but I didn´t have anything to do at the moment

  • @andygetch  Feb 2019

    here is mine https://fawm.org/songs/91015/

  • @jcooper  Feb 2019

    Here is mine ...https://fawm.org/songs/91286/
    That was fun!
It was a good idea putting the chords there as well. It gave me some structure to work with. Tomorrow I can go listen to the others (didn't want to listen before I had done mine because they would definitely influence me 😀

  • @annok Feb 2019

Confession time: I'm on my fourth year (maybe?) doing the RPM Challenge, came over to fawm.org to check out the scene, and seeing this challenge 1) made me want to try it out 2) made me finally pull the trigger and sign up for FAWM. So ... thank you!

And my version is here: https://fawm.org/songs/91344/

  • @pearlmanhattan  Feb 2019

    Here is mine. Enjoy!

    https://fawm.org/songs/91345/

  • @metalfoot  Feb 2019

I wanted to wait till a few others had jumped in before posting mine, but this is in no way 'definitive'-- just what I'd do with these lyrics!
    https://fawm.org/songs/91370/

  • @jcooper  Feb 2019

I think i’m caught up on everything that has been posted to this challenge so far. It is so interesting hearing all the different versions. Thanks for posting this @metalfoot and I hope we get a few more versions coming through.

  • @postcardhelicopters  Feb 2019

@metalfoot - this was a really fun and *challenging* challenge! I ended up getting three songs in the process of working on this (albeit number three is still just the chorus).

    Fake It (Virtually Yours):
    https://fawm.org/songs/91504/

The second is an improvisation clipped from the "work tape" I kept going in my DAW while I figured out how I wanted to tackle this challenge. It's kinda challenge-adjacent so I tagged it #fakeit as well.

    The Fake It Challenge Response:
    https://fawm.org/songs/91505/

Now I can go listen to what others came up with.

Again, thanks for this challenge! I hope you hang onto this idea and make it an annual offering.

  • @oblivionratula  Feb 2019

Thanks for the inspiration to get my second track kicked out of the nest. It has the added fun of incorporating one of @zecoop's drum tracks posted for free use. Here's my take - it was trickier than I expected and the demo has all the expected warts and then some:
    https://fawm.org/songs/91521/

Now I'm curious to hear what others did, but that will have to wait until morning.

  • @oblivionratula  Feb 2019

Whew! I have now listened everybody else’s. That was a lot of fun, and interesting how similar and different they are. Each one is a unique snowflake just like the rest. Ha ha ha. I can’t wait to do this again.

  • @factorytale Feb 2019

@metalfoot thiis really was a fun and interesting challenge and very much fun listening to all the different versions!

  • @ductapeguy Feb 2019

Thanks so much for the challenge @metalfoot. Here's mine. Fakin' Jamaican: https://fawm.org/songs/91764/ I also uploaded midi and music xml stems if you are so inclined.

  • @moonraccoon  Feb 2019

This was fun! I've got a rendition coming for this. Hope it's cool to have massaged the Bridge lyrics...

  • @tcelliott  Feb 2019

    https://fawm.org/songs/92797/

Wasn't gonna do this right now, but I want to listen to the songs and figured I'd better do mine before listening to any of the others.

  • @spirulence Feb 2019

    This is fun! here's mine:
    https://fawm.org/songs/93132/

Now to listen to all of yours!

  • @metalfoot  Feb 2019

Everyone who's participated in this hare-brained scheme of mine-- I've been so impressed! And if anyone else still wants to jump in, go for it! We've clearly not exhausted the possibilities by any means.

  • @moonraccoon  Feb 2019

What a fantastic exercise! Here's mine:
    https://fawm.org/songs/93869/

Now to listen to all the renditions I missed 😀

    @annok What's the RPM Challenge?

  • @stuartbenbow  Feb 2019

Here's my take on the lyrics and chords of your fakeit challenge:

  • @stuartbenbow  Feb 2019

    Oops, duplicate post.

  • @alonetogether Feb 2019

this was a lot of fun!
    https://fawm.org/songs/94393/

gonna go and listen to everyone elses!

  • @metalfoot  Feb 18

Wow wow wow. This has exceeded my expectations! 14 tracks so far--- a full FAWM of "Fake Its"! 😁

  • @oblivionratula  Feb 19

    Congrats, @metalfoot, that's pretty awesome.

  • @kovbleu  Feb 19

Once I hit my 14, I think I might have a go at this for fun!

  • @gbg2016  Feb 21

    Here's mine: https://fawm.org/songs/96348/
Time for a lunch break, then I'm psyched to listen to all the other versions; it's hard to imagine anything but what I heard...
    Thank you @metalfoot!

  • @theresaj  Feb 21

How fun! Here's my version. Can't wait to hear the others! https://fawm.org/songs/96410/

  • @jaegerin  Feb 22

@metalfoot This challenge was inspired! It's the perfect thing for someone like me who can put some lyrics together and make up a tune but isn't used to working with chords. Great way to start learning how to put a tune to chords, rather than (what I usually do) putting together a complicated melody and then trying to figure out the chords to go with it. That's why I always get stuck! (not a guitarist either, which doesn't help). ANYWAY I've had a fun old time this morning noodling away on the piano trying out different things. so THANK YOU! My scraggy little phone-recorded demo doesn't do justice to the "aha moment" I feel I've had, but I will put it up once I've got a half-way decent version (did I mention that playing the piano and singing at the same time is hard?!) Thanks again 😀

  • @metalfoot  Feb 22

@jaegerin Glad you are finding it helpful! I look forward to hearing what you've come up with!

  • @heuristicsinc  Feb 24

Hey! I did this. I have had this in my to-do list for a while and finally got to do it. I learned how to use a vocoder so that feels like a win.

  • @debs  Feb 24

Not quite an official entry, but I morphed @andygetch's version of this challenge here: https://fawm.org/songs/97239/ 😀

  • @jfrancissmith Feb 24

What a great idea! This will be fun.

  • @w1n  Feb 27

Here's the results of my attempt
    https://fawm.org/songs/98449/

  • @glasscrow Feb 27

This sounds like fun! I wish I had seen it earlier! Maybe I'll make an attempt before my doctor appointment in about an hour...otherwise, I hope you do this again next year!

  • @infilktion Feb 28

This was fun challenge. I especially loved hearing so many unique takes after I got my version posted. https://fawm.org/songs/98892/

  • @metalfoot  Feb 28

Hey everybody: There's been SUCH a wonderful response to this that I think I will try to make this a regular game. Thanks to all of you for being kind to my lyrics and chords and making such wonderful songs out of them. I could have won FAWM on the strength of these collabs alone! LOL

I hope all of you have had a wonderful FAWM and I wish you all the best in your songwriting and performing futures!

  • @siebass Feb 28

@metalfoot I've got a placeholder to try this once I have some time in March, we'll see who's still around then. This was a great idea!

  • @metalfoot  Feb 28

@siebass I'll still be around. They have to force me to leave this place.

  • @leomozi  Mar 18

Cool idea and nice lyrics and chord progressions to get everybody started, @metalfoot! I hope you do this again next year.

  • @siebass Mar 18

I finally started tracking this in a brief window I had over the weekend; just gotta add bass and mix. Then I can see how many people came up with the same/wildly different interpretations and enjoy 😀

  • @siebass Mar 20

Finally done with this. Fun challenge, Alex! Looking forward to a new one next year. I learned I can get a pretty passable synth tone for my guitar thanks to this effort.
