The remix challenge!

  • @cblack  Jan 24

Can't believe I've never seen this here before, but what about a remix challenge?

Like, someone provides the raw recordings of a song (individual files for the different layers) and then other people mix it how they see fit? Possibly adding our own elements or re-recording part or something?

I'd love to do this, as I don't have the means to make full songs of my own, but would love to practice mixing.

Otherwise all I'll be doing is EDM.

Anyone interested in providing raw tracks or remixing? Join me! And we can tag it #remix and feel all professional and stuff. 😁

  • @helenseviltwin  Jan 24

@cblack - I'm definitely up for providing tracks to be remixed. Also kind of interested in remixing, but am much less confident in my ability to do that.

  • @mdavisto  Jan 24

@cblack I actually thought about this earlier today.

But, I wondered if it doesn't fall more under the category of cover versions? Like, yes, you're inventing a new arrangement in a new style - but you're working off an existing song.

... is basically why I decided nah.

But, that's just me. Remixing can be an extremely expressive and creative artform. You guys should go for it.

  • @alamous Jan 24

Sure. I'll share some tracks later.

  • @hornesgiftshop  Jan 24

@cblack Sure, if I manage to do something usable, it's all yours.

  • @cblack  Jan 24

    Sweet!

And for what it's worth, I don't intend on counting remixes towards my 14 songs. Just me. I mean, there are no prizes anyway...

@helenseviltwin Ha, I'm the exact opposite. Little confidence in recording, but love mixing. πŸ˜€

  • @andygetch  Jan 24

@cblack sounds like a collab to me as long as it is all 'new in February' material. @fuzzy and I did something like this in 5090 where I generated a few song fragments then sent off for @fuzzy mixing, editing, effects, expansion, and magic.

  • @tcelliott  Jan 24

@stevenwesleyguiles supplied some tracks a couple of years ago and it was more than fun trying to mix the song. I discovered that I value clean mixes entirely too much. As a result I've tried to be a little creative in my arrangements. A great learning experience and also, something I should do more of.

  • @mdavisto  Jan 24

@tcelliott A good friend of mine is an award-winning engineer who helped out on a couple of tracks on our last album. This is what I learned:

Compress it. Now add some distortion. Did you compress it yet? Compress it some more. Now warm it up with some distortion. Now try a distortion effect. Have you tried adding a compressor yet? Put a compressor on it.

    Have you considered distortion?

  • @tesla3090  Jan 24

There was "explore the core" some years ago. Not quite a remix, but I believe everyone was given a set of lyrics and chords and told to write around that.

The Morph challenge also tends to have elements of remixing (at least the way I approach it)

  • @pipewrench67  Jan 24

I did something similar to this a couple of years ago in 50/90
I "sampled" songs on there (with permission) and utilized the bits and pieces to come up with something new.

Having multiple tracks to play with would be fun (I think)

  • @dragondreams  Jan 24

@rahkoi remixed one of my tracks a few years ago. The end result was both hilarious and epic. πŸ˜‚

  • @helenseviltwin  Jan 24

We also had crucio a few years ago, where people were sampling other people's songs. That was fun

  • @cblack  Jan 24

Must say, I'm really looking forward to this challenge. I've never mixed someone else's work before... Should be a blast!

  • @stevenwesleyguiles  Jan 24

Remixing can be a total collab too! The person remixing can add tracks, remove tracks, and just have fun with changing it up.

    I'm totally down for this!

  • @krayzie003  Jan 24

I'm up for doing this challenge. I did a few remix contests last year during 50/90 and it was a lot of fun.

Check out this cool video I recently watched on 4 producers remixing the same piece of audio. https://youtu.be/zvKY_DnM1PA

It's absolutely amazing how people can take the same thing and turn it into such different beautiful creations.

  • @fuzzy  Jan 25

I really enjoyed working with @andygetch's tracks and would love to do that again, if anyone is willing.

  • @frenchcricket  Jan 25

I did this last year with one of @shortdan's songs

    https://frenchcricket.bandcamp.com/tr...

I can't remember which song of his it was. I asked for permission afterwards lol

  • @fuzzy  Jan 25

Hey, that was a super interesting video, @krayzie003, Thanx for sharing.
Here's a challenge idea; a bunch of members put together tracks using the same short sample and see how different they all are.
Would anyone be up for that? If so, I'll make a Challenge thread some time during February.

  • @frenchcricket  Jan 25

Andrew Huang is great. Love his videos

  • @shortdan  Jan 25

@frenchcricket That link's broken when I open it. I want to have a listen back!

  • @frenchcricket  Jan 25

FAWM has a problem with shortening long links

    try this https://tinyurl.com/y9twhh2n

  • @shortdan  Jan 25

    Got it! πŸ‘πŸ»

  • @krayzie003  Jan 26

@fuzzy. Definitely would be interested mashing up some samples.

  • @coolparadiso  Jan 27

    great idea

  • @sph  Jan 28

@fuzzy sounds like fun. Ping me when you set up the challenge

  • @ampersandman  Jan 28

@fuzzy I like that idea! Just watching the video, great stuff.

  • @jcooper  Jan 28

I’m up for providing some tracks! Also happy for people to put their β€œarranger’s” hat on asnd slice, dice, double, move things around... etc.

  • @pearlmanhattan  Jan 28

I am interested, but want to hear a few examples of the process before I sign up.

  • @declan Jan 28

    I'm in.

I could either supply the stems or do the remixing.

  • @heuristicsinc  Jan 28

Yeah, remixing is fun. Let's do it, preferably with more than one song πŸ˜€

  • @seemanski  Jan 28

I think @zecoop and I did something similar one year. Can't recall the song though. It was fun but then again I didn't do the remixing which I can imagine was a pain in the arse

  • @cairobraga  Jan 28

I'm in to remix and to be remixed and to be sampled! I love everything about this thread, including Andrew Huang.

  • @dragondreams  Jan 28

I'm throwing this out there. Any of my tracks this year will be available for you to remix in any way you like. I'll include a link to a zip file of audio stems, along with notes about speed and key. 😊

  • @cairobraga  Jan 28

I'll be doing the same as @dragondreams, since it's such a great idea!

  • @pipewrench67  Jan 28

@dragondreams I like that idea I may try to do this as well (Will probably fail, but will try).

  • @fuzzy  Jan 28

Oh boy, I love doing that kind of thing; thanx, @dragondreams!

  • @cblack  Jan 28

Wow! So much love for this idea. Very much looking forward to remixing some of y'all's stuff.

As for how we organise this, I was thinking keep it fairly casual. Drop a link to stems/etc. in this thread if you want.

I don't think a time limit would help... I want everyone to be as comfortable as possible with this challenge, y'know?

  • @zecoop  Jan 29

@seemanski - I think it might have been this one... You wrote a song on acoustic guitar and vocal, but only sent me the vocals. I had no reference to what your version sounded like. Mine turned out pretty dark and your original was pretty happy in a major key as I remember
    La La La (More)
    https://zecoop.bandcamp.com/track/lal...

  • @krayzie003  Jan 29

    Very cool @dragondreams .

  • @jcooper  Jan 29

Good idea @dragondreams . I will do the same!

  • @stevenwesleyguiles  Jan 29

    Anyone wanna do a test?
Here are some files...I THINK THINK THINK these are the ones I offered a year or two ago.

    Do they work for you?
Is this an original song or a Beatles cover?
Only way to find out...drag all of these files into your DAW of choice and GIT BIZZY MIXIN!

    Is this it @tcelliott?

  • @seemanski  Jan 29

Ah I remember now @zecoop, I didn't give you something to remix, I gave you nothing. Not quite this challenge then.

  • @dragondreams  Feb 1

I've made the stems available from my first track, if anyone is still interested in doing a remix or cut and shut job. πŸ˜€

  • @jcooper  Feb 2

The stems for all my songs will be posted here. Remixes! yeah. Go for it.
    https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/sha...

  • @dragondreams  Feb 2

The zipped stems for my second track are now available for you to sample and/or remix as you see fit. πŸ˜€

And @helenseviltwin has done an awesome job with the stems from the first track already!

  • @dragondreams  Feb 3

Stems now available for tune 3. Not just remixing either. Feel free to chop up and tweak as you see fit. Hint - this one also needs a singer and some lyrics in its original form. Any takers?

  • @cairobraga  Feb 5

my first track is up, with stems! https://fawm.org/songs/91322/

  • @cblack  Feb 6

    https://fawm.org/songs/91431/

Remixed one of @dragondreams songs. Thanks! It was an absolute blast!

  • @dragondreams  Feb 6

@cblack - so glad you had fun with it! I had loads of fun recording it in the first place. 😊😎

  • @robynmackenzie  Feb 8

Yes please! I am up for providing tracks and also mixing tracks.

  • @heuristicsinc  Feb 10

    Hey @dragondreams I remixed your song #1 here: https://fawm.org/songs/92922/
    Fun!

  • @balancelost  Feb 10

Whatever happened to crucio? I miss that being a thing.

    So, I just did this
    https://fawm.org/songs/92927/
Which mangles @lanasolyluna 's Dancing Veggie Pop. I clicked on the crucio tag to check out what other people were doing and the only result was our song. This made me, not sad, but one notch less happy...just tried searching for remix instead, found something. I'm out now, but I'm gonna listen to these when I get back [/drunkenpromise]
