Songs about Books (World Book Day)

  • @jonmeta  3 weeks

Would you like to contribute to a FAWM compilation of songs about books for World Book Day (23rd April)? I wrote one this year, and in response @wobbiewobbit and @berni1954 both sent me links to their book songs. @billwhite commented that we need more songs about losing books and fewer about losing lovers. I'm sure he's got at least one. So... did you write a song about a book or books or reading or libraries this FAWM (or in a past one) that I could put on a compilation on Bandcamp by the 23rd of April?

World Book Day started in Spain to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Shakespeare, Cervantes, and El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. It's been recognised by UNESCO for the past 25 years.

    Update 30th of March:
    So far we’ve got:

Chris Harris, “Harmonic”, inspired by writer Charles Fort.
Nadia Cripps, “Pages from the Book”, an instrumental evoking the joys of reading.
HH “Nahkakantinen eepos (The Skin-Bound Tome)”, about an imaginary book of the dead.
Berni Armstrong, “Losing the Plot”, about books and forgetfulness.
dazdandconfusd, “Life, the Universe, and Everything”, about... well, you know.
Jon Nelson, “Gower Street Penguins”, about a bookshop and a library.
    One pending from MKDB.
One from Wobbie Wobbit that I need to get permission for.

    That’s 7 or 8. Let’s go for 14!

  • @headfirstonly  3 weeks

Noticed your question mark: World Book Day was on March 4th this year.

  • @jonmeta  3 weeks

@headfirstonly Yes, Chris, it's confusing bc World Book day in the UK / Ireland is in March but the UNESCO date is April 23rd. So I figured one is past but the other is still ahead. Got any book songs?

PS Just checked it again, and apparently the March date was to avoid a clash with St George's Day. Which seems odd, since not everyone in the UK celebrates that. Plus, St. G's is a big holiday here in Aragón and Catalonia too!

  • @headfirstonly  3 weeks

Ah, the UK going it alone once again... I am detecting a theme here, LOL

My album "Fort" was inspired by my collection of Fortean books. This one is about the writings of Bruce Cathie, who had a crackpot theory about geodetics but who was nevertheless able to successfully predict whether atom bomb tests in the 1960s would be successful or not:

  • @emkaydeebee  3 weeks

I didn’t do one during fawm this year, but the one I’ve just done for the SpinTunes contest is based on a book. I guess that doesn’t count as written this last week, not during fawm - but if you’re short in number and decide to open it to songs done by fawmers more generally, it could be added. I can share it after it goes live on SpinTunes if you do want it. Others may have based their on a book too?...

  • @jonmeta  3 weeks

@emkaydeebee Definitely! Book songs by FAWMers is the general idea. Berni's and Wobbie's were written a couple years ago. Just had a look at the SpinTunes Round2 challenge, so I see it has possibilities. I know from another forum that there are several FAWMers involved. Thanks for the heads up!

  • @musicsongwriter  3 weeks

Not sure if it's qualified as it's a general idea rather than music about a specific book but here is my instrumental I composed back in 2019: https://nadiacripps.bandcamp.com/track/pages-from-the-book

  • @hmorg  3 weeks

I did a song about a book that hopefully does not exist in reality.
    https://fawm.org/songs/118217/

I fear its appeal is to a limited demographic, though, but I would love to contribute.

  • @jonmeta  3 weeks

Nadia @musicsongwriter, this definitely fits in. The feelings of opening a book and discovering the story. It's lovely.
HH @hmorg , great! An imaginary book is still a book. I thought this was a top-quality piece of music.

  • @hmorg  3 weeks

@jonmeta glad you liked it. 😁

  • @musicsongwriter  3 weeks

Jon @jonmeta, thank you so much, so wonderful to read your kind comment. Thank you for creating this thread.

  • @wobbiewobbit  3 weeks

totally have my permission 😀 good luck

  • @tcelliott  3 weeks

I also did the spintunes challenge. I wrote a song about the story of Beowulf from Grendel’s POV: https://spintunes.bandcamp.com/track/such-evil-creatures

  • @jonmeta  3 weeks

    Thanks @wobbiewobbit !
@tcelliott I heard it a couple days ago on SpinTunes. Will def include you. Thanks!

  • @tcelliott  3 weeks

@jonmeta sweet. Let me know if you need anything else. Also, I go by T.C. Elliott on everything outside of songwriting challenges.

  • @robotkitten  3 weeks

I wrote a song this year for A Little Princess: https://fawm.org/songs/124412/
Caveat: it's a parody of a copyrighted tune. But last FAWM I wrote a book-themed parody of a public domain tune, It's Impossible to have Too Many Books, so ping me if that's close enough to the theme.

  • @emkaydeebee  3 weeks

This is my SpinTunes entry that I mentioned above...

    https://spintunes.bandcamp.com/track/wishful-thinking

It is based on the Daniel Keyes novel, Flowers for Algernon. Whilst the book is all written in first person by Charlie, in the form of Status Reports as we see his IQ rise exponentially, peak and then fall again, this song is written from the perspective of Alice, his reading tutor who becomes his love interest.

  • @jonmeta  3 weeks

@emkaydeebee I listened on Spintunes a few days ago and thought, Wow, this seems so familiar, but I couldn't place it. But of course, I read the short story in high school!

  • @emkaydeebee  3 weeks

@jonmeta ah brilliant! You were lucky to be somewhere where it wasn’t banned - so many school districts did it seems! (All for one short paragraph of them making love I think...)

  • @tcelliott  2 weeks

@jonmeta I also did a song about the book "Empire of the Summer Moon" last fall called 'Eyes In The Darkness' - I doubt you want multiple songs by a single artist, but it would be available if needed. (You could use it instead of Such Evil Creatures if you chose.

  • @highmountain 2 weeks

I wrote a song about American cowboys in love with French literature. It mentions "Madame Bovary", "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame", "The Flowers of Evil" and namedrops Verlaine, Rimbaud, Villon, Balzac and one American - E A Poe - as OK:d by Baudelaire. https://fawm.org/songs/121482/

  • @highmountain 2 weeks

Also made this one, having some fun with Henry James. Mistakenly I rhymed James with river Thames, but maybe that could pass considering the point of view of the narrator? Obviously he got bigger things wrong. https://fawm.org/songs/119432/

Hi everyone. We’re getting shut down in 4 days so I want to be sure I can contact everyone for the World Book Day compilation.
I’ve created an artist profile on Bandcamp called “fabfourteen” to host this and hopefully more fawm compilations in the future. I’m still trying for 14 songs. Some of you have sent an mp3 already. If you haven’t, please do. My email is jonmeta@gmail.com
    Twitter @jonlortnelson
This is what we’ve got so far:
@headfirstonly “Harmonic”. I need a copy of the song, please.
@musicsongwriter “Pages from the Book”. I need a copy of the song.
@hmorg “Nahkakantinen eepos”. I need a copy of the song.
@berni1954 Losing the Plot”. I need a copy of the song.
@tcelliott ”Such Evil Creatures”. I’ve got an MP3 from SpinTunes.
@highmountain ”The James Brothers”. I’ve got the song, thanks!
@wobbiewobbit “The Futility of Books”. I need a copy of the song.
@emkaydeebee ”Wishful Thinking”. I’ve got an mp3 from SpinTunes.

I’ve emails for everyone on the above list, so I’ll check in with you that way.

Besides these, I’d love to include:
@dzdandconfusd, “Life, the Universe, and Everything”. I’ve got your email.
@andygriff “Rebecca”. I don’t have any contact details for you, Andy, so shoot me a note, please!
@loveonamixtape “Me. And Me Now”. I’ve got your email.

    Thanks, everyone!

Hi Jon, I sent you my music. Thank you.
    Nadia
You might find that Bandcamp doesn't accept MP3s. Please let me know if you would like me to send you Wav instead.

  • @wolfkier 1 week

@jonmeta Will this do you? Sally Like A Book.(2016)

If you're uploading to bandcamp, you need FLAC WAV or similar quality, they won't let you upload mp3. if it qualifies and you want it, email me and I'll send you back FLAC file. wolfkier/gmail.

  • @thedutchwidows  1 week

hey @jonmeta - if you need any more, you're welcome to use our SpinTunes entry, based on Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell. Not the most uplifting of tracks - a song about grief in 3/4 (or 6/8, not sure which), so I'd only use it if you need numbers to hit your 14 song target!

  • @jonmeta  1 week

    Thanks, Nadia @musicsongwriter Got it.
@wolfkier This is a great tune. I will include it for sure.
@dutchwidows Thanks, yes! I don't know how I've missed you on FAWM until now. I like this a lot. I'd say it shifts between 6/8 and 3/4, and I like that gear-shifting sensation and how it reflects the message.

Thanks for the heads up about Bandcamp not accepting MP3s. I'm still learning the ropes on BC. Any further tunes, please send them in the appropriate WAV, FLAC... format.

  • @wolfkier 1 week

    Thank you @jonmeta
For reference: Here's exactly what it says on the bandcamp song upload page: Cut and paste; "600MB max, lossless .wav, .aif or .flac"

  • @musicsongwriter  1 week

Thank you Jon. I'll send you WAV.
    Nadia

  • @tcelliott  1 week

I can send a WAV of Grendel if you'd like.

    Found your email. Will send.

  • @jonmeta  1 week

Great @tcelliott ! In fact, send me both songs. I have a few that are uncertain yet and I really want to have 14. After all, the Artist profile for the compilation is Fab Fourteen.

  • @emkaydeebee  1 week

@jonmeta do you have mine as a wav or do you need me to send it through?...

  • @tcelliott  1 week

@jonmeta Give me a day or two and I will send.

    thanks

  • @jonmeta  1 week

@emkaydeebee I downloaded the MP3 from SpinTunes, so please send the WAV. Thanks.

    Thanks @tcelliott .

I'm going to get an email out to everyone with a status update. We're gonna lose this channel pretty quickly now.

  • @emkaydeebee  1 week

    @jonmeta done 👍

  • @tcelliott  1 week

If you do an email you might get the lyric for each song as well, bandcamp supports that. Also, it'd be nice to have the book the song was written about on the song information page, at the beginning of the lyric or both.

  • @jonmeta  1 week

@tcelliott My thoughts exactly. But I wasn't sure what Bandcamp supports. So thanks. I will send an email to everyone. Def send me the lyrics, story behind the song... Artwork for the song as well? Link to your personal bandcamp page. I'm also weighing what charity to give the proceeds to IF there are any sales. There are some great literacy charities vetted by the UK Charity Commission but I've yet to find one that takes donations through PayPal, which is what BandCamp requires for direct charitable payments.

  • @tcelliott  1 week

@jonmeta Emails sent. Let me know if you need anything else.

  • @tcelliott  2 days

@jonmeta - Just confirming you got the email and everything is a gogo.
