Who else is putting together a Bandcamp album?

  • @mikeskliar  Mar 2

So every March for the last eight years or so, after FAWM, I've taken the 'best' of what I wrote, did a little polishing, re-recording, maybe some additional songwriting & recording, etc., and issued an album on Bandcamp. I've found that that process really helps the writing, long term, as it gets you focused on 'what makes a song work', encourages you to stretch to make a perhaps more varied album, and give you a neat souvenir/diary of 'what was happening that Feb. This year I probably have enough things to choose from that I don't feel I need to write another bunch of songs , so I'll probably act fairly quickly (i.e within a week or so!) in getting an album together.

Who is with me? It'd be awesome if there were a bunch of us all working on albums from our fawm (or before, whatever works) material- and while enough of us are 'here' it'd be great to trade links and check out each others stuff.

hoping there are a few fellow crazies out there who might want to do this somewhat accelerated 'album project' (prior years people did it with deadlines in like May, but I think by then the 'community' here has largely vanished).

Just to make it a bright line-date, perhaps---- suggestion -deadline the Ides of March (March 15th)? Render onto Caeser what is Caeser's, render onto bandcamp...... the rawk! (insert fun hand gesture of your choice!)

  • @dreamscuba  Mar 2

I am thinking about putting such an album together...never done it before.

  • @mikeskliar  Mar 2

you should go for it @dreamscuba !!!!! hope you do!

  • @coolparadiso  Mar 2

Here is mine Mike been up about a week! I may do a second but time is a bit short for polishing anymore https://johnnicholson.bandcamp.com/album/juke-box-songs

will be available everywhere else soon!

  • @mikeskliar  Mar 2

checking it now now @coolparadiso - first track sounds great!

  • @psyt Mar 2

Me. All the songs are already there, and I'll probably compile them to an album after they all get mastered. I don't plan any changes to the order of the songs or to cut any out or anything like that.

  • @kanttila  Mar 2

My album is mostly done. I'm just waiting on a few parts. This time I have a lot of friends on the album in collabs and skits. I'm letting it sit and build which has worked really well instead of rushing it out like I always do.

Making albums is the way I have advanced my skills. For me it's like, you focus and work towards something very clear. and then when you're done it logs that time in your life. If you don't like it then note what you think you can do better and start a new page for the next album. I find when making an album you will come up with ideas out of nowhere that just lock into place.

I recommend everyone to do this as well!

  • @stephenwordsmith  Mar 2

I put together a Bandcamp album of my compilations once a year or so. I'm waiting on the revised versions of a couple of songs, but I anticipate having album #6 released in March*

*This will be from last year, although I have my eye on much of the material from this FAWM for album #7!

Have a listen here, if you wish: you may recognise some names.

    https://stephenwordsmith.bandcamp.com/

  • @andygetch  Mar 2

I might. I might not. Depends on how motivated I am to reach those same five listeners, most of whom are already here.

  • @burrsettles  Mar 2

be sure to tag your albums with #fawm and #fawm2021 on bandcamp so it's easier to search for and find them!!!

just this year it occurred to me to do a search on bandcamp for FAWM tags and was amazed at how many cool albums came up....

  • @zam Mar 2

I'll have one up in a couple months. Need to polish and rerecord my scratch takes. I'm gonna take the next month and reconnect with my family after the last month spent in the basement, then I'll be sure to put the hashtags on!

  • @tcelliott  Mar 2

Planning on releasing an album of these songs. Probably in rough and raw form but with a bit more polish. I also have almost an album completed with a bunch of songs from last year (or so.) So lots of things in the works.

  • @dreamscuba  Mar 2

@mikeskliar thanks for the encouragement. I have never published any of my music before. I have often meant to but never achieved my own escape velocity from the chair...but this year seems a little different.
@burrsettles thanks for the tips on the tags.

I think I will make a selection from this and previous years, limit the number and tidy them up then publish....I will report back.

  • @midwayfair  Mar 2

Most of my FAWM work since 2015 has gotten released as solo albums, but 2017's four songs (busy with other stuff that year) ended up on a home recorded album of mostly non-FAWM songs. Several songs from last year, 2013, and 2014 got full band recordings and are coming out as a band CD this year.

I really like what I recorded this year, and more than that I like the recordings. I'm definitely releasing them but I still need to decide if I'm going to get them remixed and mastered elsewhere or if I'm going to do it myself again.

  • @tcelliott  Mar 2

@midwayfair Just listened to a couple of tracks and I love them.

  • @midwayfair  Mar 2

@tcelliott Right back atcha buddy! I honestly thought I had watchlisted you a couple years ago because I've definitely heard your stuff on here before and liked it.

  • @mikeskliar  Mar 2

great to see a bunch of fine folks jumping on to this thread ๐Ÿ˜€ lets have fun everyone!

  • @mardeycranbleson Mar 2

I put mine up already. I haven't listened to it in the car yet I may remix slightly and rearrange song order. https://sirchorizo.bandcamp.com/album/traditional-breakfast

  • @nadine Mar 2

I will try but it will take some time as it will be (re-)recording most tracks, full production, mastering and artwork. Hope that I get it finished this year. Definetaly NOT in March. Thanks for the hint on the #fawm tag.

  • @hmorg  Mar 2

I've been lazy for the last couple of years and just migrated old stuff from Soundcloud to Bandcamp as I'm running out of space from the former, but this year I just removed my 2017 stuff from Soundcloud and I'm thinking of scrapping the stuff on Bandcamp and replacing them with more cohesive compilations, like death metal goes to one release, synthwave to another etc. I just need to sort out the material I have amassed and retouch most of it, then add the releases bit by bit.

  • @roddy  Mar 2

I have started a Bandcamp album based on songs and music for three different sized ukuleles. I have 8 tracks mostly from this year's FAWM and I will add more later. I usually intend to do this after FAWM of 50/90 but never get round to doing it. One of the 'advantages' of a lockdown here is that I have more time for things like this.

    https://roddy.bandcamp.com/album/the-three-ukulele-band

  • @unkept Mar 2

This year I specifically wanted to write an "Album" for FAWM, trying to keep things together and starting with an album name, etc.

So YES I want to do this finally. I've got some other things in the way but I plan to having it done around the end of March or early April... Just need to fix a few things in the songs and try my best to master everything before it's ready.

  • @hornesgiftshop  Mar 2

I've done an album for each of my 3 previous Fawms. What's missing this year is that by now I'd have started playing the new songs in the pub, folk club, open mic etc, and I'd see which ones got a reaction.

  • @reklov  Mar 2

Me too, but I'm still working on the cover. And I'm looking for a nice album title! Could you please help me with this?
    https://fawm.org/forums/topic/11842/

  • @laotranati Mar 2

I'll hopefully release an EP with my favorite songs, but they need a lot of work, so I don't think it will be doable by March ๐Ÿ˜

  • @jmadison  Mar 2

I've done this each year, and plan to do it again (after catching up on duties I neglected thru Feb).

I have called mine FAWM Favorites 20xx each year. Basically I pick my favorites, and rework bits, eq, mix, etc and throw them on my Bandcamp.

I do think of it as a journal for myself. But it's also about the best way I have to share my music with family and friends that care enough to listen.

  • @lowhum Mar 2

Is there anything better? Like for free's sake and for really free? For the free minded, of course ๐Ÿ˜€)

  • @mikeskliar  Mar 3

I'm very happy to see such a nice-sized thread about this! I did a little thinking today about what songs of mine seem to want to shine again and find themselves on an album, and which ones want to swim free, into the far distant ocean, etc. I know, silly poetic images, but whatever works for you- I do believe sometimes the 'songs suggest their path themselves, tho! (or maybe more accurately its helpful to think if it that way sometimes). Once I have a tentative list, I make some different playlists, see how they sound relative to each other (is one too loud, too soft. etc? does something needs more produciton) and get lost in that for a bit. ANd yes, as Burr suggested, tag your bandcamp albums #fawm and #fawm2021 ...so we can find each others's stuff more easily!

  • @pianoonthepatio Mar 3

Sounds great! I'm thinking of picking at least some and expanding it for pitching for film/ animation projects ๐Ÿง also is there another musician community as supportive as this one for commenting / getting feedback on your songs??

  • @jamkar  Mar 3

Indeed I will! FAWM is the driving force.

  • @gnashattack  Mar 3

    Me! I didn't edit anything or re-record, I just posted it as-is.

"A Million Boxes | Shiny and the Spoon" https://shinyandthespoon.bandcamp.com/album/a-million-boxes

  • @flintlock6969  Mar 3

i do the same! last year was my first "successful" FAWM and by that i mean finishing more than a few tracks. so last year i took the best 5 and made an EP. i only managed to finish 8 this year (work and kids) and im actually going to release two EP's with this years tracks, an ambient and a techno EP. going to go back and fix and add everything i left out/didnt like in these tracks and get them out ove rthe course of the next few months.

  • @bootlegger Mar 3

This fawm album will likely be the basis for a future album for sure. I'm really happy with a lot of it.

I'm about to release an album starting with a single next month. It'll be on bandcamp and all the streaming sites when it releases. I'll definitely share some links with the fawm community when it comes out though!

  • @beautyspot Mar 3

What would be cool is some FAWM compilation albums. Piano, punk, techno, funk, folk and WTF! But with almost 14000 songs, that is a daunting task. Creating a Bandcamp album of one's FAWM experience is great way for one to re-visit their creative output. I do one every year, mostly just tweak the mix and publish.
    https://beautyspot.bandcamp.com/

  • @leslie  Mar 3

I'm putting a mixtape EP together to release on Bandcamp Friday this week. Other songs are making it onto albums I'm releasing later this year. One plus about spending so much time on the mixes/production this year is they're in pretty good shape already!

    http://lesliehudson.bandcamp.com

  • @adforperu  Mar 3

Mine is up! https://adfollett.bandcamp.com/album/fawm-2021. Once a song is uploaded to FAWM, I tend to not touch it ever again - so that's the whole album up there now (though sadly, 'Everyone Poos' didn't make the cut)

  • @ayehahmur  Mar 3

I'm planning on putting an album out this year. Planning to do it over the next month and I like @leslie's idea of hitting a Bandcamp Friday, so if there's one in April I'll try and hit that.
Hardest bit is trying to decide which tracks to go with.

  • @yam655  Mar 3

I'll be putting at least one album together. I thought I'd be doing that immediately post-FAWM, but now I've gotten distracted by "live coding". Ah, well. At least I managed to prevent the distraction until March.

  • @spacehoers420  Mar 3

I move stuff to Bandcamp when I run out of room on Soundcloud, and that includes this year's album. Now with added song titles!
    https://spacehoers.bandcamp.com/album/looking-at-jupiter

  • @wrenarcher  Mar 4

Iโ€™m really pleased with what I wrote in this inaugural FAWM of mine and with six songs... thatโ€™s a respectable number for an EP. It would be nice to have them polished up a little and put somewhere like band camp.

    I just might do that.

  • @aeye Mar 4

We are! Itโ€™s actually already complete and on our bandcamp page now. (And also spotify and iTunes too!)

  • @nadine Mar 4

I would appreciate if you link to your albums in your profiles and/or songs! Like to listen to your stuff afterwards!

  • @ustaknow Mar 4

*lowhum ๐Ÿ˜€ hahhh, Ino! ๐Ÿ˜€ Remember when making an album would be like, "being an austronaut" (pick something ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) And the cost! How abougt those 45rpm vinly "record" booths, - novelty's now (like phone booths ๐Ÿ˜‰ hahhh). (I'd love to Vend a few of those if made money.)

    - Me, as always, I make it (the "collection/album"), as I go (work from a theme now), and don't fuss over'em; they'll all be my "bonus" materials in the legacy box set when I am world famous ๐Ÿ˜‰ e.g.:
    https://www.amazon.com/Jack-White-Acoustic-Recordings-1998/dp/B01JN...

So, now, in a few days, - I"ll have my "Left overs" (fawm2021) cover art and the theme cover (I use here), that I use to try to keep me focused, - I tend to go in many directions at the same time; but also why I get paid the big money irl ๐Ÿ˜‰ ; so that issue is a benefit ๐Ÿ˜‰ hahhh. SeA! ๐Ÿ˜€ - always a silver lining, if not gold below it!

    - Don't jah just love music!

  • @ustaknow Mar 4

Oh, my - whomever's is listening to my "albums", thank you! ๐Ÿ˜€ Made my day.

  • @leslie  Mar 4

My 5-track EP "Pianoless" goes up tomorrow on Bandcamp. Songs with @dasbinky @kristian @robynmackenzie & @zecoop . I'm doing all the proper tagging as requested: #FAWM #FAWM2021

  • @neillarrisey Mar 5

I've put an EP of tracks from my FAWM that I've done a bit more work on since it ended (not a great deal, just some tightening here and there, perfecting mixes and such)
There's a lot I did for FAWM that I'm keeping to go on my debut album, but these four tracks I thought would be a good EP and a nice taster.

    https://idlegene.bandcamp.com/album/one-not-out

  • @andygetch  Mar 5

After seeing @burrsettles forum topic asking for tagging primarily FAWM albums on Bandcamp https://fawm.org/forums/topic/11861/ that inspires me to do something. As my better FAWM songs are currently scattered, and I was considering culling my Bandcamp page anyway, I am leaning towards a best of FAWM approach, rather than just tracks from this year.

  • @ampersandman  Mar 6

I played around with the song order a bit and am confronted with the same problem as every year: I have made an album's worth of songs, but I haven't made an album, which is to me a collection of songs that are connected by a common thread. Nevertheless I'll try to bring them in a suitable order for one CD. Bandcamp ... let's see.

  • @hmorg  Mar 8

I'm currently working on putting the finishing touches on an EP that contains one of my this year's FAWM songs. I also realized over the weekend that it actually does contain another song from last year's FAWM, albeit with rewritten lyrics.

  • @mikeskliar  Mar 8

Glad to see that many folks here are working on album projects! Its something that I feel is rewarding on several levels. Something that @ampersandman just mentioned is very interesting- that idea of making not just an album's worth of songs, but 'a collection of songs that are connected by a common thread'. That can be loose or very specific, of course, but I've found that sometimes the chase to 'find' that thread can lead to clarity in your songwriting in general. Congrats (now or in advance) to the many folks here who are working on projects- I'm busy working on my album project as well (as well as continuing to listen and comment here) and something should be ready by March 15th or so....

  • @fonte  Mar 8

Yes, I will be doing this, I think it's a great idea. Give yourself a couple of weeks to make any little changes that have been bugging you then get it up there. I find it's a nice way of 'finishing' what was started in Feb, and if nothing else it's lovely to have a snapshot in time. Just a shame that we can't all make CDs or records and send them round ๐Ÿ˜‚

  • @ampersandman  Mar 8

@fonte Yeah, once I'm really well off I'll buy a vinyl press and FAWM like a boss. ๐Ÿค˜

  • @kissinginpublic  Mar 8

Yep, highlights with a little remixing and remastering.

  • @daveyboy103  Mar 8

Single out now on Deezer, more platforms to follow:

  • @nadine Mar 12

Is there any facebook group where people show their albums and recordings? I'd like to listen what you made out of your sketches.

    @ampersandman
I understand your trouble. As I wrote in another thread, writing an album in a certain period of life dealing with different topics and such is also good way to go. As a listener I shuffle anyway. I've sorted my music by genre and mood. But I do my best find an appropriate track order and try to mix them on the same level of loudness.

  • @devinhill Mar 12

I remastered all my FAWM songs this FAWM and reordered the tracklist. https://lastyearsdisaster.bandcamp.com/album/sleepwalkers-and-sweet...

  • @mikeskliar  8 weeks

Congrats, everyone who has gotten or are getting their albums out there!! great work everyone!

Me, I thought I'd be able to get it finished, up and posted by today, but life is getting in the way a little bit. Hoping for 'end of this week' if I can... most of the work is done, but may do a little more overdub work, and also want to get the lyrics, notes, etc. up there. (Note to everyone out there, I think many will enjoy it more if they can read your lyrics up on the bandcamp site for each song (if its a song with lyrics that is).

    stay tuned, everyone!

  • @headfirstonly  8 weeks

Here's mine - a few have been rewritten and/or rearranged:
    https://headfirstonly.bandcamp.com/album/what-i-did-in-february

  • @gubna 7 weeks

I made 3. I have two up now, but the one which has most of my FAWM output this year, is not compiled yet, and I may not have it done before FAWM goes offline in April.

    But the link is here:
    https://spamystyle.bandcamp.com/album/alone

    This was the 2nd album:
This was the "no listening project" which I mentioned in this thread here: https://fawm.org/forums/topic/11496/ That's the first time I've created a challenge that anyone else actually did! Super cool! I was stoked that other people took this idea and made some songs.
The majority of it was done on 2.11.2021 and all but the last track Number 40 were recorded/compiled in Feb.

    https://cntnr.bandcamp.com/album/multiple-random-combine

And this was the 3rd one:
This was the tapeloop kinda thing I did during the last week of Feb. https://cntnr.bandcamp.com/album/receiving

  • @hmorg  7 weeks

I managed to put the finishing touches to my black metal EP with one song for which I wrote the lyrics this FAWM and another with music from last year's FAWM but lyrics rewritten.

Next up, going through my output through the years for some compilations by theme/style.

  • @mikeskliar  7 weeks

so, life got in the way in a bigger and sadder way this week (my mother in law died)..... will have to take a break from music-making etc for a few days, but hope to be 'back' in some form in a week or so, or maybe earlier.

  • @boyatheart 7 weeks

My condolences to you and the family @mikeskliar .

I just released my FAWM 2021 album on Bandcamp. I decided not to tweak the mixes and just put them up as they came out.
    The album is called "02-21"

I spun a lot of FAWM material into my first Ruckus Aquinas album โ€œHoly Hand Grenadeโ€ a few years back.

    https://ruckusaquinas.bandcamp.com/album/holy-hand-grenade

This year, though, my followup act to releasing my FAWM album will be an EP of songs on racial justice Iโ€™m prepping to release in April. Thatโ€™ll also be on Bandcamp when it comes.

That said, Iโ€™m pretty positive one of my FAWM songs will also be polished for Ruckus Aquinas in the future.

Got a date and a cover for mine! Created over seven weeks between Feb and March.

Grey Import is my artist name outside FAWM. If you are kind enough to want to listen (thank you in advance!), I have some social links on my profile as itโ€™s going live after the site shuts. Howโ€™s that for bad planning? ๐Ÿ˜

  • @gm7  6 weeks

    @candle NICE cover.
Music is a wonderful release..., great title!

  • @candle  6 weeks

@kissinginpublic I really like the cover. I don't know if I'd call that bad planning - it just forces us FAWMers to your site(s) to keep up with you. I call that good marketing ๐Ÿ˜‰

@gm7 Thank you! And yes, FAWM this year has been a wonderful release for me. And hopefully for everyone else!
