Write a melody that only uses the first three notes of a scale, mostly.

Examples: “Free Fallin’” (Tom Petty), “What Makes You Beautiful” (One Direction), “Water Under the Bridge” (Adele), “Lucky” (Daft Punk feat. Pharell), “Don’t Start Now” (Dua Lipa), “Courage” (Celine Dion), “Mary Had a Little Lamb”

  • @mikeb Feb 8

Ooh, am I the first to post one for this week's challenge?
I'm not a fan of these music-based challenges, as they seem to exclude lyric-only writers (except via collaboration).

  • @burrsettles  Feb 8

@mikeb we try to alternate lyric-based (or content-based) and music-based weekly challenges, so as not to alienate instrumentalists, either. 😀

  • @lastnightilie Feb 8

@burrsettles have you considered coming up with an alternate challenge each week? For example, an instrumental alternate for "what's in a name" could have been coming up with a signature motif and then using it many times throughout the song. An alternate for this one could be choosing 8 words and writing a song entirely/mostly with those.

  • @burrsettles  Feb 8

@lastnightilie that's a good idea! we might do this in the future; right now it's enough work to come up with just the one prompt a week... for example, the things you just suggested have been weekly challenges already in past FAWMs! 😀 but it's probably OK to recycle...

besides — i argue that an lyricist should be able to take inspiration from a music-only prompt (and vice versa), you just have to be open to it.

  • @scottlake Feb 8

Or how about a Joy to the World challenge which just uses a major 8 note falling scale but varies the Rhythm?

  • @estebanlartigue  Feb 9

Wow it was a challenge for myself thank you!!

  • @kludge  Feb 9

This prompt worked out great for me! https://fawm.org/songs/115491/

  • @blobdx7 Feb 9

hi eveybody, how much time left to do this challenge? Sounds interesting and could give a little boost to creativity

  • @cleansupafterburn Feb 9

I used to have a Big Bird patch on an old, green, army jacket, as I called it. Incidentally the song "Sunny Days" from Sesame Street, where I was introduced to that muppet/mascot suit character... the TTC subway system in Toronto also sings the first three notes on a scale. It's descending.

  • @shintai  Feb 9

so just the first three notes of a scale is allowed.. but what is about chords? So are no chords allowed our just the first three of the scale?

  • @ayehahmur  Feb 9

@shintai The challenge is to write a *melody line* using only the first three notes of the scale. My interpretation is that you can put whatever chords you like into the arrangement behind that melody.

  • @musicsongwriter  Feb 9

Thank you so much for this challenge. I never tried it before so it was very interesting for me to have a go.
    Here is my instrumental:

  • @mandolinda  Feb 9

This challenge was an exercise in new things for me, using a beat box, and creating a protest song.

  • @dreamscuba  Feb 10

@burrsettles - I love the inclusivity here!! Thank you.

  • @ginomakesmusic  Feb 10

Thanks for the challenge y'all! I made mine for the sake of tranquility.

  • @krrisstin  Feb 10

i had fun making an a cappella song using a minor key do re mi for the melody, and it happens to have a name title, so i knocked off week 1-2 challenges in one 2 minute song 😝 https://fawm.org/songs/115822/

  • @alyxanderjames  Feb 10

Did a little song for my D&D group for this: https://fawm.org/songs/115827/

  • @pearlmanhattan  Feb 10

Two for Two on the weekly challenges! Go me! https://fawm.org/songs/115749/

  • @shintai  Feb 10

@ayehahmur upsi, I did read over that part about the melody haha.

Now my track is created with just the three notes and almost no chords, except some octaves.

  • @wazylizard  Feb 10

It's nice to see how people express differently their answer to the challenge. I picked the heavy vibe with one of these dark minor scales for the melody: https://fawm.org/songs/115601/

  • @declan  Feb 10

So what are some examples of notes at the start of scales?

  • @ayehahmur  Feb 10

I've done a song about a doorstepping zombie evangelist. They have pamphlets and everything.

In order to make it last a whole four minutes I tried to get a bit creative with chording around the three notes. The first part of the verse is in G, the second part in Em and the chorus is in Bm, modulating back to G. I'm not sure if that's in the spirit of the challenge, but I got a song so I'm calling it a win.

  • @ayehahmur  Feb 11

It might have helped to provide a link...

  • @robynmackenzie  Feb 11

I didn't manage to stick to those three notes for the majority of the song, but this is my effort: https://fawm.org/songs/116385/

  • @thesoundof Feb 11

This challenge was extra hard for me but managed to do... something with it. And then the song evolved with a wonderful idea of whispers in the background. https://fawm.org/songs/116032/

  • @onceandfuturegabi Feb 11

This produced a bit of a weird melody for me, but I felt a Depeche Mode thing coming on and just went with it. Here's the most anarchist song I've ever written: https://fawm.org/songs/116499/

  • @tjeff  Feb 11

Fun challenge - it's hard to restrict the melody like this but the examples given helped foster the imagination.

  • @jkepler Feb 13

So, would the fact that the Sacred Harp 's scale (fa sol la fa sol la mi) enable one to use the first six notes, since notes 4 - 6 repeat the same names as notes 1 - 3?

  • @scubed  Feb 13

Fun challenge! I incorporated it into a skirmish yesterday:

  • @glasscrow Feb 14

Just logged in for the first time in over a week, but I think I can manage getting this done by midnight. Maybe you'll see me among the entries.

  • @willow1 Feb 15

Oh hi! Here’s one improvised today, fun times.

  • @ampersandman  Feb 15

I didn't understand the challenge at first. Then I figured out to play "Free Falling" on the keys and ... mind blown.
I didn't plan on taking part in this challenge, but in the end I made one.

  • @winchperry Feb 15

I wrote this one for the Love prompt during today's skirmish, but the melody features the do re mi of the C scale prominently and repeatedly, perhaps to the point of ad nauseum. Please enjoy Love Nest: https://fawm.org/songs/117923/

  • @sbs2018  Feb 19

When I realized I was only using a few notes, I remembered this challenge so here it is - Rock This House:

  • @thatsmaboy  Feb 21

I found this challenge quite a tricky one and had to rein myself in on the path of the melody. I ended up with a strange quirky little song, wierd. Anyway here’s my effort, written and recorded in 1/2 hour 😀 https://fawm.org/songs/116584/
