Slothcore artists assemble

  • @spikedirection  3 weeks

"#slothcore: "Very slow (like 20 - 40bpm), dirty & with long pauses to simulate naps. Perfect music for that overworked college/university student in your life."
    @candle

I think that enough of us have dipped our toe in now to form a record label and take this new sound to the world, right? Certainly it's graduated from made up genre to actual genre?
I count six #slothcore songs bearing the hashtag. Are there anymore out there?

  • @dzdandcunfsd  3 weeks

I haven't heard everyone's yet, but I do think its my new favorite genre. It's a lot of fun to make too!

  • @spikedirection  3 weeks

I'm definitely doing more. I feel a side project coming on...

  • @elesimo  3 weeks

We should release an album with our songs! We can put it on Bandcamp and dedicate all profits to https://slothconservation.com/.

Fun fact: in my hometown in Brazil we had sloths in the city's main plaza in the downtown. I loved watching them!

  • @elesimo  3 weeks

Another fun fact: my first #slothcore was actually written in January! https://thefishermenandthepriestess.com/track/slow-and-dirty

  • @spikedirection  3 weeks

Oh that's a wonderful idea and I will happily donate tracks to that.

  • @mardeycranbleson 3 weeks

Wow this sounds like it could be right up my alley; fun to make, not so fun to listen back to!

  • @dzdandcunfsd  3 weeks

@elesimo I'd happily donate some tracks to that as well! I got one from Jamuary too! I might add some guitar or something to it, it was all drum and keys at the time, but will probably do at least one more here at fawm as well. Jealous you even get to see some! I've seen them in a zoo, I won't count that hahaha

edit: I guess there was guitar too 😁 It still needs a little more dirty though.

  • @spikedirection  3 weeks

Has anybody made it below 40bpm yet? That's the absolute lowest my drum machine will go so I'm going to have to resort to trickery to get slower.

  • @candle  3 weeks

Oh my, I can't believe my funny little "make up a genre" has blossomed into this. Wow. Thank you everyone for picking up the #slothcore torch & um… well, not running with it… um, meandering slowly? 😀

@elesimo & @spikedirection that's an amazing idea & a great organization to support. I'm in (how could I not be? LOL). I've got to find some time to listen to everyones tracks. This is so exciting.

I guess we all need to do some more #slothcore tracks 😁

    Sloth on!

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @elesimo  3 weeks

@spikedirection my first song was made on the OP-Z, and 40 was also the lowest BPM. My second song (the FAWM one) is at 30 BPM if I remember correctly.

  • @candle  3 weeks

@spikedirection, my Burning The Midnight Oil (https://fawm.org/songs/114229/) is 20 BPM. My DAW goes down to 16 BPM, but I figured I'd stick to the BPM range I initially stated in the OP.

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @dzdandcunfsd  3 weeks

@spikeddirection my first one was at 20ish probably more like 25 I'm not a machine! hahaha, but this is the first time I've ever used a metronome 😁 shhhhhhhhh don't tell anybody 😉 It only goes to 30, I just pumped the brakes from there.

  • @gubna 3 weeks

I am so in on this one!

  • @gubna 3 weeks

I think one of my synth workstation goes down to 5bpm. Not sure about one of my eurorack modules but I think it’s 20bpm.

  • @yam655  3 weeks

I've been using 20 BPM. If using virtual instruments, it definitely caters to some more than others.

I liked the 20 BPM speed so much, I even used it on a non-slothcore track.

@spikedirection I just don't use drums on my slothcore tracks. I don't really like a quick decay on any of my slothcore instruments. There's no way to do a drum that doesn't have a quick, fixed decay.

  • @fuzzy  3 weeks

Yes, I'm definitely going to do this by the end of the month.

  • @pifie 3 weeks

    Good idea!

I don't dare under 40 BPM, it's difficult enough to follow there!

"Challenge": Tag people here that you think could enjoy making it! (as @mardeycranbleson wrote, maybe not listening to it, but surely making it!)

    D O
    I T
    F O R

    Hey @phlex I COMMAND YOU!

P.S.: @fuzzy your respond is very fitting 😀 hehehe

  • @nerdjealous  3 weeks

    https://fawm.org/songs/114462/
in spirit of Sloth, I slowly got around to making this track

  • @bradbrubaker  3 weeks

Y'all. I have loved listening to your #slothcore songs. I tried to do my own tonight, but did *not* love it, haha. I'll see if I can write one I like by end of FAWM.

  • @spikedirection  3 weeks

@yam655 that's interesting about the drums. Obviously not everyone has used drum tracks, but to my mind it's essential to distinguish this from ambient drone type stuff. That and the naps.

  • @nerdjealous  3 weeks

    https://fawm.org/songs/114930/ spoken word slothcore 😁

  • @calumcarlyle  3 weeks

i have never heard of slothcore. I am looking forward to it though.
Last week i got a telling off from the Spanish Rock Shot station manager for playing that drone track! I think he probably needs to hear some slothcore on the show...

  • @candle  3 weeks

@calumcarlyle that would be awesome! #slothcore on Spanish Radio. Our first step on the journey to take over the world! LOL

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @kendrakinsey  3 weeks

I wanna do it too! I love some chill droney stuff!

  • @dzdandcunfsd  3 weeks

@calumcarlyle 😁 yes! It will be the next new craze 😂

@candle I think I may already be splitting it into subgenre's hah! too much delay on a drum track for my next one........sounds like some actual rolls being done. slothheavy? I'll be sure to put in extra naptime 😉

  • @gubna 3 weeks

    Here's my submission:
    https://fawm.org/songs/114982/

I want to figure out how I can slow down vocals without them being pitched down. Time stretch might work, but I think there's going to be some math...

  • @bradbrubaker  3 weeks

I did it. Thank you @candle for inventing #slothcore.

    https://fawm.org/songs/115001/

  • @candle  3 weeks

There are now 12 tracks that have been tagged #slothcore. That's pretty much an album's worth right there. Wow. This is surreal 😲 Thanks for supporting this crazy genre everyone!

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @persaab 3 weeks

Slothcore sounds my thing so I’ll be doing it next.

  • @elesimo  3 weeks

@candle 2 more and it wins FAWM! 😀

  • @candle  3 weeks

    @elesimo #slothcore FTW

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @candle  3 weeks

    @persaab looking forward to it!

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @spacehoers420  3 weeks

I just tried my latest 8 bar loop at 40bpm, and it sounds pretty cool. It's also now 44 seconds, which is, like, 1/4 of a song already. Maybe I should do at least one slothcore track for my FAWM album.

  • @candle  3 weeks

    @spacehoers420 : do it! You know you wanna… 😉

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @spacehoers420  3 weeks

"004" is going to be very very slothy. I added some distortion and some pauses, and it's starting to come together already.

    edit: Aaaaaaand it's done!

  • @dzdandcunfsd  3 weeks

I'm guessing #slothcore will get at least a double fawm win. It's just week 1 down 😁

    https://fawm.org/songs/115058/

  • @elesimo  3 weeks

    And it's a win!

    I'm definitely making more songs!

  • @atitlan  3 weeks

Don't know if this represents the genesis of Slothcore - if so @Candle is the originator ... and 'Horror in the Museum' may be the first slothcore track

A comment from last year's FAWM:

    Candle - 2020-02-02 @ 05:53pm
Thank you for the great comment on Horror In The Museum. Horror Slothcore, eh? I like that 😀 See You In The Shadows…

  • @persaab 3 weeks

@candle beware what you wish for. I have a idea for my slothcore song. My ideas normally arent the best. Or good for metal health. Haha we will see how it works out.

  • @persaab 3 weeks

I have to say that @dzdandcunfsd slothcore song lift my bar way too high that I can’t jump. But I’ll do my best or half of it.

  • @spikedirection  3 weeks

Check it out! #slothcore has now won FAWM! 🥳🎉✨🎆🎊

  • @yam655  3 weeks

@spikedirection Yeah, the naps are essential. I also aimed for clear delineation between the (virtual) instruments being used. They need to sound like different instruments. I have an ambient track that was influenced by my slothcore work, but it doesn't maintain instrument differentiation nor contain any naps.

@gubna To slow things down, I've used "rubberband" on the command-line. (cross-platform: Linux, macOS, Windows) https://breakfastquay.com/rubberband/

I did a track once that was inverted from the norm with a peppy instrumental piece that sat on top of a super slowed down backing vocal track. (Clearly, I don't need a made-up genre thread to get super experimental.)

When you use good tools to slow down audio, there's no limit to how far you can stretch things. You will need to decide whether you want it to be easily understood as language or not, though, as if it is stretched too far language disappears.

  • @candle  3 weeks

@atitlan I totally forgot about that! Oh my. Yeah, Horror In The Museum did have some Slothcore elements. Just posted it to Soundcloud for others to chime in:

    https://soundcloud.com/candle-experience/02-horror-in-the-museum-po...

    @persaab I await with antici… pation 😉

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @nerdjealous  3 weeks

    https://fawm.org/songs/115214/ a more musical exploration

  • @persaab 3 weeks

Sorry to keep you waiting. Seems like these sloths move slowly. I bit scared that they are coming double. Lookslike started a eork with another one sametime. Or my mind runs too fast and I just cant sloth things down.

  • @sw1n3flu  3 weeks

I'm no slothcore artist... but... PRESENT!
    https://fawm.org/songs/115238/

  • @heliosonorous 3 weeks

Found this intriguing so I gave it a shot!

    https://fawm.org/songs/115248/

  • @nerdjealous  3 weeks

anyone else get this? when you listen to the genre, then you realise that the whole world is moving a bit fast, and your ears and mind have to catch up! 😁

  • @fuzzy  3 weeks

OK, here ya go; my Slothcore piece!
    "Two Stroke Withdrawal"
    https://fawm.org/songs/115274/

  • @persaab 3 weeks

My computer protests against me and wont render the other song.
but here is one. My first slothcore one so please be gentle. hah
    https://fawm.org/songs/115280/

  • @krayzie003  3 weeks

I think this qualifies as Slothcore at 38bpm https://fawm.org/songs/115446/

  • @reklov  3 weeks

Here's mine. It runs at 20 bpm.
    https://fawm.org/songs/115541/

  • @engebretsen  3 weeks

Never heard about this expression, but I sure will try to make one now.

  • @engebretsen  3 weeks

... and here it is. That`s was fun. https://fawm.org/songs/115581/

  • @gubna 3 weeks

I've got another one. Wrote this after having a nightmare last night.
    https://fawm.org/songs/115626/

  • @nerdjealous  3 weeks

    https://fawm.org/songs/115828/ slothcore rap beat!!

no vocals, but ill work on something for my next slothrap track 😉

  • @krayzie003  3 weeks

Second go at Slothcore. I'm really digging this new genre we've made up. For this one I used drum samples, synths and virtual guitars. Everything is of course heavily distorted from it's original form. https://fawm.org/songs/115837/

  • @jessespillane 3 weeks

I wanted in on the fun 😀
    https://fawm.org/songs/115899/

  • @nerdjealous  3 weeks

    https://fawm.org/songs/115919/ 'happy' slothcore

  • @schlimminycricket 3 weeks

this rules. my individual instrument parts all have pauses for naps, though they rarely line up for the listener to nap
    https://fawm.org/songs/115938/

  • @petemurphy  3 weeks

    I'm loving the slothcore vibe.
I've just uploaded a slothcore song, and I might do more.

This is at 20bpm, 3/4 time sig.

    https://fawm.org/songs/115971/

  • @shintai  3 weeks

oh my, this sounds so FUN! I totally will join you guys 😀

  • @elesimo  3 weeks

I made my second song last night, using cassette tape to slow it down and make it dirtier: https://fawm.org/songs/116040/

  • @persaab 3 weeks

PC is saying no to my "2021 slothman" song. So I made new one.
    https://fawm.org/songs/116112/
Funny it did render this song on second time. I guess this pc needs more memory.

  • @heliosonorous 3 weeks

Figured I would take the Slothcore idea and use it to make an experiment in Orchestral Slothcore.

    https://fawm.org/songs/116120/

  • @nerdjealous  3 weeks

We're getting quite the collection here! The genre is beginning to dive into more areas of musical exploration, and it's all fun! 😁 loving the diverse styles now. Pretty much slothcore is a genre now, it may be micro right now but maybe we will all be pioneers to bring it to worldwide success? Is slothcore the new style every pop star mogul is going to take on board? Or will we be the next vaporware?? 😁

  • @elesimo  3 weeks

We should really make a compilation after FAWM, and get a bunch of songs together so people can listen to all of them at once. Maybe we could create a label in Bandcamp and put some of the songs there? I'd be happy to organize that if people are interested!

  • @dzdandcunfsd  3 weeks

@elesimo I'd be happy to donate any of mine. I liked the original(I think was your idea as well) to just donate any sells to that sloth conservation fund. I looked at that just briefly, but all seemed on the up and up. I'll stick around for at least a few weeks after fawm, and will volunteer to help you organize it 😁 I've been through most of these so far, but I have a feeling there's liable to be 100 by the time the month is up.

  • @elesimo  3 weeks

Yeah, it would be super cool if we could donate the revenue to some sloth conservation society, when I proposed the idea I found this one in Costa Rica: https://slothconservation.com/

    🦥

  • @candle  3 weeks

I'm still in awe at how this has all developed 😲 Songs are getting posted so fast, I feel like I'm falling behind on my listening.

@elesimo, I'm in on the comp idea. Let me know what I can do to help.

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @pipewrench67  3 weeks

    Here is my musical contribution.
    https://fawm.org/songs/116287/

I am also putting in my 2 cents on the Slothcore aesthetic (Slothsthetic if you will) artwork for my slothcore will be created in 5 minutes or less.

  • @mardeycranbleson 3 weeks

I just did mine as a goof but after hearing the quality of everyone else’s I think I better delete it and try again lol

  • @spikedirection  3 weeks

Got an idea for another outing with the sloths. Things have evolved a lot since my first experiments, but the core essence seems pretty strong. Gotta have those naps though!
Anyway dunno if anybody uses reddit, but I nabbed r/slothcore, just incase things really take off, and we end up becoming a 'scene' 😅

  • @spikedirection  3 weeks

Oh and I'm definitely up for donating tracks to this compilation when it happens.

  • @dzdandcunfsd  3 weeks

@spikeddirection as weird as reddit is I'm shocked that wasn't already taken for animated sloth pornography or something 🤣

  • @spikedirection  3 weeks

    @dzdandcunfsd so was I 🤣

  • @headfirstonly  3 weeks

Couldn't resist. Recorded a track at 120 bpm, slowed it down by 75% using sliding stretch in Audacity, and then dropped the Inchindown Oil Tanks convolution reverb on some guitars...
    https://fawm.org/songs/116675/

  • @calumcarlyle  2 weeks

    Slothcore drum 'n' bass!

    https://fawm.org/songs/116868/

  • @fuzzy  2 weeks

    That was really interesting, @calumcarlyle.
Leave it to John Cage, right?
Now I wanna write a #slothcore tune called "Liminality".

  • @sirius 2 weeks

    Catcore-Slothcore :
    https://fawm.org/songs/117420/

  • @candle  2 weeks

    @sirius - that's awesome! @mojo would be proud.

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @povosos  2 weeks

I can't use under 30bpm in virtual instruments, but essentially they are mostly slower than that. Though, listening to some of your og slothcore songs, not sure if these qualify: https://fawm.org/songs/117378/
    https://fawm.org/songs/117379/

  • @sirius 2 weeks

    @candle - Big compliment, thank you! =^.^=

  • @heuristicsinc  2 weeks

    That's a lot of fun. I did a thing:
    https://fawm.org/songs/117632/
    It's a remix! Slothmix.

  • @burrsettles  2 weeks

After this weekend I'm finally out of the gate with this year's FAWM, and did a slothcore generative modular piece as one of my first tracks! https://fawm.org/songs/118055/

I have an idea for another... we'll see...

  • @ustaknow 2 weeks

Did jah hear about the big slothcore music festival?
[jah, that's as far as it got 😀 ]

  • @ductapeguy  2 weeks

Here's mine. I constructed a crazy, elaborate set of rules to randomly generate a melody on top of a robot band exploration through all 7 modes... with a reggae beat. https://fawm.org/songs/118178/ It turned out way more pleasant than I thought it would.

  • @ductapeguy  2 weeks

Look Trevor YJ on the on the Internet made a Tshirt design for slothcore.
It is a thing. So of course it is a thing you can buy. Not endorsing the product... just thought the image was spiffy.

  • @spikedirection  2 weeks

    Its magical...

  • @spacehoers420  2 weeks

I did another one and uploaded it to https://soundcloud.com/the_door_is_scary/nameless-track-9

  • @dock  2 weeks

I just tried slowing down a guitar part to 16 BPM and got a cool growling thing with the strum. Just not sure where to go from there. In true sloth form this song is going to take a while. I think I need to sleep on it.

  • @persaab 2 weeks

Yesterday my friend played cd that included some old songs that I gave him around 2008-2010. Now I've running through some old files from that age and guess what... Found song from 2010 that goes on 27bpm. and fits in slothcore and probably some other genres too. But it's over 30mins long so I'm not butting it here. You all fall a sleep before the end. haha

  • @spikedirection  2 weeks

@persaab if you're on reddit I would strongly encourage you to post that epic on r/slothcore. I'd love to hear it.

  • @persaab 2 weeks

@spikedirection sorry I don’t even know whats reddit. Haha just live comfortably numb in my own bubble.

  • @candle  2 weeks

    @ductapeguy I need one of those T-Shirts. That's awesome!

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @gardeningangel1  2 weeks

I also want a T-shirt. Gotta get one now before this goes mainstream and stops being cool.

  • @persaab 2 weeks

    @gardeningangel1 😂

  • @hmorg  2 weeks

I'd completely missed this until now, but I am...

    intrigued.

  • @moonraccoon  1 week

Here's mine, called Slothcore Bandit: https://fawm.org/songs/120034/

    I tracked down the slothcore T: https://society6.com/product/slothcore_t-shirt

  • @krayzie003  1 week

I was helping my youngest son clean up his room today and came across a stuffed animal sloth. It is now living in my studio. Expect to see him often on here LOL

  • @berni1954  1 week

Inspired by this thread, I began playing with some sounds using the Kaoss Pad feature to control a Korg i-Wavestation this morning. Sadly, I disremembered the 20-40 target as 20-50 and chose 50. You should have heard me curse when I finished the piece and checked back on this thread. ("Check out the requirements first!" says the voice of my later father in my head). Er.... the Stonehenge Reproduction in "This is Spinal Tap" comes to mind. 😁

Anyway, you may rule this out completely... But I hope you'll be a little flexible. It is my first foray into the world of "Ambient/Electronic".

    https://fawm.org/songs/121737/

  • @gubna 1 week

    I did another!
    https://fawm.org/songs/120408/

  • @tcelliott  1 week

I've recorded most of the music for a track... like a week ago. I plan on finishing it. I'm only putting this here to hold myself accountable as I've very limited time for the rest of FAWM and need to be more organized and motivated if I'm to finish much more.

  • @elesimo  1 week

For a lazy genre people doing #slothcore are pretty prolific! 😝

  • @candle  1 week

Yeah, 67 tracks tagged #slothcore. Wow. This is crazy. Thanks everyone for making this a thing!

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @bri4n  1 week

This was too good to not try, so I did: https://fawm.org/songs/122089/

  • @krayzie003  1 week

Here's another one that's kind of a dark ambient soundscape made of samples I recorded and mangled. https://fawm.org/songs/122166/

  • @persaab 1 week

I made this from samples and loops. It started as really noisy but I took all the massive drums away and strip it kind of moody version.
    https://fawm.org/songs/122173/

  • @candle  6 days

@elesimo & @spikedirection, were we serious about a FAWM #slothcore comp? 'Cos there's (as of this posting) 73 amazing #slothcore tracks that have been posted. We might have to release a Box Set 😁

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @elesimo  6 days

    @candle 100% serious! Let's come up with a plan to make a compilation. 😀

  • @candle  6 days

I'm in, @elesimo . Maybe come March 1st, we can sit down & hash out a plan. Until then, maybe we can all brainstorm individually so we can come to the table in March with some ideas. Thoughts?

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @elesimo  6 days

@candle I was thinking we could create a label in Bandcamp, and then release a few compilations — there's quite a few different styles inside #slothcore.

The Bandcamp label would be just to make it easy to send the money to each artist automatically. Though I'd also love to try to have a compilation where the revenue goes to the sloth conservation society.

  • @standup  6 days

I started a slothcore thing tonight. Not done. But so far it's over 7 MINUTES! Anybody have an idea how long an "average" slothcore song is? I'm afraid I'm in snoozefest territory. Maybe I should write pop-punk-sloth.

  • @gardeningangel1  6 days

I love the idea of a compilation with proceeds going to sloth conservation. I wonder if we could somehow partner directly with an organuzation like slothconservation.com

  • @candle  6 days

@standup, I don't know what the average is, but I don't think there's anything wrong with a 7 minute song (this coming from the guy who's had three FAWM songs over the 22 minute mark 😉 ).

@gardeningangel1, yes - I especially love that idea. We should look into how it would be best to make it work.

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @tcelliott  6 days

@candle @elesimo - Maybe the funds could go to FAWM? Or, as @gardeningangel1 mentioned, another charity.

If you're asking people for permission to use their tracks I'm all in, if it's wanted. If not, then that's cool. I might wanna do a few touch ups to the mix, though, maybe.

  • @dzdandcunfsd  6 days

@gardeningangel1 yeah that was the charity first suggested by @elesimo and I think its a grand idea. @standup I think 7 minutes is a perfectly acceptable time for a #slothcore song. I think that's about where my last one was after I snipped it in half 🤣

  • @candle  6 days

I really like the slothconservation.com suggestion.

@tcelliott, I think we do need to ask permission to see who wants their #slothcore tracks shared on a comp. Also, it'll give those artists a chance to remix or touch up their tracks past a GEFF (Good Enough For FAWM) state. We should maybe look at mastering services perhaps, so the final album is sonically cohesive.

Just thinking off the top o'my head…

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @mikeskliar  6 days

here is my first slothcore song! done as a skirmish, with the prompt being, oddly enough....'candle'!

gets very weird at the end, even weirder then the beginning

  • @sph  6 days

    Finally I also join in:

I find it much harder than I thought. Next one needs to be more sparse

@candle still on board for a slothcomp for sure

My latest song "Insomniac" sorta fits the definition of "slothcore". Pretty slow, heavy, drenched in reverb...

@candle @spikedirection I'd be willing to give one or two of my Slothcore tunes to a compilation. Just let me know if this idea takes flight.

  • @candle  4 days

@krayzie003 thank you! We'll have to see how things shape up in the next little while now that FAWM is ending.

One last one before time runs out. What a great new genre we have created. I'll definitely be continuing to create new Slothcore tunes even after FAWM. Keep it slow fellow Slothers. https://fawm.org/songs/125068/

  • @ryuu  4 days

I don't know if this has enough pauses to fully qualify as slothcore. But it's 38bpm and it has very distorted guitars. https://fawm.org/songs/124002/

Check this. It's not quite slow enough to be slothcore but I love it regardless.

This dude showed down the Alvin and the chipmunks songs until the vocals were normal human pitch.

  • @candle  1 day

I laughed at the first comment on that video: "this is the soundtrack to carbon monoxide poisoning" That's awesome! Yeah, this is pretty inventive. Funny to hear Alvin & the boys singing in a normal pitch. Great find @spikedirection!

In a 'goodbye FAWM 2021' note, I have to say that Slothcore was, of all FAWM, what most struck me as quite inventive and out of the blue. This has been great!!

  • @candle  1 day

Yeah, I have to agree @pifie. I'm still in shock (& awe) that it became a thing. Thank you everyone for taking my silly new genre idea & running with it! Final tally: 81 songs posted as #slothcore. Wow!

Suggestion: we designate a slothcore group elsewhere before Fawm goes silent for the year, and plan that compilation in earnest. The slothcore subreddit exists, but could go wherever people prefer?

  • @candle  1 day

I'm fine with Reddit. Would prefer it to FB, actually.

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @krayzie003  1 day

Just searched FB and there is no Slothcore group. Someone should create it. I'll join.

  • @mikeskliar  1 day

i'm contemplating putting my slothcore tune "Candle in slothcore" https://fawm.org/songs/123109/ on my new Bandcamp album- maybe the sloth-iness of it will make everything else look like fast punk rock by comparison! 😀

  • @dzdandcunfsd  1 day

That shirt is great! 🤣 I don't do FB, but willing to venture to Reddit LOL

  • @elesimo  1 day

Maybe we should do just email? I'm also moving away from Facebook, and I feel Reddit is too public and hard to have a conversation.

    I created a Google group: https://groups.google.com/g/slothcore

There's a few things we need to do:

    1. Reach out to #slothcore musicians and see who would like to be part of the compilation.
    2. Decide on 1 or more compilations of songs, maybe grouping different styles? Or maybe making 1-3 albums with a mix of styles each?
    3. Compile all the final mixes, and master everything together.
    4. Publish the compilation(s). I think Bandcamp is an easy place to start, and I don't mind creating a label just for this. Maybe later use a proper distributor.
    5. Find a charity that takes good care of sloths and donate the proceedings.

Today I reached out to a few friends who are biologists in Brazil asking if they recommended any particular sloth conservation society. I can do (4) and (5), and maybe (3), but my mastering skills are not the best.

    Anything else that I forgot?

  • @dzdandcunfsd  1 day

@elesimo looks good to me! I'd rather discuss specifics there than reddit as well, even if a slothcore group is probably not going to garner much attention 😀

Sorry for the spam. We're starting to organize a #slothcore compilation, with the goal if making 1 or more albums and donating the proceeds to a sloth conservation society.

If you'd like to be part of this, please join the Google group https://groups.google.com/g/slothcore. This way we can move the conversation to email.

ooooh, this is a wonderful idea. Just sent a request.

  • @tcelliott  1 day

@elesimo I think you've already done 1. I have the unlimited distrokid account and can use it for various artist compilations But there is a charge to keep it on there forever. (in case I drop my account and all the music I've uploaded gets removed.) Usually 50 bucks an album. It may be more affordable to use another service. Maybe check into amuse.io which is free. etc.,

I think there are three options for 3. One is have someone basically get the loudness similar. Which is fairly easy to do if the songs aren't already brickwalled/maximized. The second is to use a service like LANDR or similar. If someone has that service then they could do it. Otherwise I think it's about $3/song or so (from memory.) The fourth is to actually pay a mastering engineer to master all the songs.

Personally, I'm fine with having someone simply get the levels similar, and I have some plugins that can do that (Ozone etc.,) or I can do it manually. I'm willing to do that, but will need all the tracks submitted with around 6db headroom for it to work the best. If tracks come in hot then there is little I can do. I'm also perfectly willing to let someone else do it.

I'm willing to donate some cash for the project if that's what you/we decide.

And lastly, 2. Someone is gonna have to take the lead and make some decisions. The songs could literally be organized by submission. Have a deadline. All songs by that deadline are put on a compilation by submission date. The number of compilations determined by the number of submissions. Otherwise, someone(s) should just organize running order etc., to the best of their abilities and be done with it. That someone should be able to ignore complaints because that almost always arises in compilations. (Although with mostly FAWM ppl, it might be very minimal. You guys seem to be way more considerate than the average internet group.)

  • @spikedirection  23 hours

Outstanding, sent in my request to join. My stuff was recorded live to one track so no chance of remixing but I'm happy for it to be mastered as required

  • @heuristicsinc  21 hours

Excellent, I'm in for this, just joined the group.

  • @roysmith  20 hours

  • @candle  18 hours

Wow. Just looked & there's 22 members signed up in the Google Group. That's awesome! And it looks like we're starting to get some plans laid for the compilation album.
