Slothcore artists assemble

"#slothcore: "Very slow (like 20 - 40bpm), dirty & with long pauses to simulate naps. Perfect music for that overworked college/university student in your life."
@candle
I think that enough of us have dipped our toe in now to form a record label and take this new sound to the world, right? Certainly it's graduated from made up genre to actual genre?
I count six #slothcore songs bearing the hashtag. Are there anymore out there? -
@dzdandcunfsd 3 weeks
I haven't heard everyone's yet, but I do think its my new favorite genre. It's a lot of fun to make too!
-
@spikedirection 3 weeks
I'm definitely doing more. I feel a side project coming on...
-
@elesimo 3 weeks
We should release an album with our songs! We can put it on Bandcamp and dedicate all profits to https://slothconservation.com/.
Fun fact: in my hometown in Brazil we had sloths in the city's main plaza in the downtown. I loved watching them! -
@elesimo 3 weeks
Another fun fact: my first #slothcore was actually written in January! https://thefishermenandthepriestess.com/track/slow-and-dirty
-
@spikedirection 3 weeks
Oh that's a wonderful idea and I will happily donate tracks to that.
-
@mardeycranbleson 3 weeks
Wow this sounds like it could be right up my alley; fun to make, not so fun to listen back to!
-
@dzdandcunfsd 3 weeks
@elesimo I'd happily donate some tracks to that as well! I got one from Jamuary too! I might add some guitar or something to it, it was all drum and keys at the time, but will probably do at least one more here at fawm as well. Jealous you even get to see some! I've seen them in a zoo, I won't count that hahaha
edit: I guess there was guitar too 😁 It still needs a little more dirty though. -
@spikedirection 3 weeks
Has anybody made it below 40bpm yet? That's the absolute lowest my drum machine will go so I'm going to have to resort to trickery to get slower.
-
@candle 3 weeks
Oh my, I can't believe my funny little "make up a genre" has blossomed into this. Wow. Thank you everyone for picking up the #slothcore torch & um… well, not running with it… um, meandering slowly? 😀
@elesimo & @spikedirection that's an amazing idea & a great organization to support. I'm in (how could I not be? LOL). I've got to find some time to listen to everyones tracks. This is so exciting.
I guess we all need to do some more #slothcore tracks 😁
Sloth on!
See You In The Shadows… -
@elesimo 3 weeks
@spikedirection my first song was made on the OP-Z, and 40 was also the lowest BPM. My second song (the FAWM one) is at 30 BPM if I remember correctly.
-
@candle 3 weeks
@spikedirection, my Burning The Midnight Oil (https://fawm.org/songs/114229/) is 20 BPM. My DAW goes down to 16 BPM, but I figured I'd stick to the BPM range I initially stated in the OP.
See You In The Shadows… -
@dzdandcunfsd 3 weeks
@spikeddirection my first one was at 20ish probably more like 25 I'm not a machine! hahaha, but this is the first time I've ever used a metronome 😁 shhhhhhhhh don't tell anybody 😉 It only goes to 30, I just pumped the brakes from there.
-
@gubna 3 weeks
I am so in on this one!
-
@gubna 3 weeks
I think one of my synth workstation goes down to 5bpm. Not sure about one of my eurorack modules but I think it’s 20bpm.
-
@yam655 3 weeks
I've been using 20 BPM. If using virtual instruments, it definitely caters to some more than others.
I liked the 20 BPM speed so much, I even used it on a non-slothcore track.
@spikedirection I just don't use drums on my slothcore tracks. I don't really like a quick decay on any of my slothcore instruments. There's no way to do a drum that doesn't have a quick, fixed decay. -
@fuzzy 3 weeks
Yes, I'm definitely going to do this by the end of the month.
-
@pifie 3 weeks
Good idea!
I don't dare under 40 BPM, it's difficult enough to follow there!

@bradbrubaker 3 weeks
Y'all. I have loved listening to your #slothcore songs. I tried to do my own tonight, but did *not* love it, haha. I'll see if I can write one I like by end of FAWM.
-
@spikedirection 3 weeks
@yam655 that's interesting about the drums. Obviously not everyone has used drum tracks, but to my mind it's essential to distinguish this from ambient drone type stuff. That and the naps.
-
@nerdjealous 3 weeks
https://fawm.org/songs/114930/ spoken word slothcore 😁
-
@calumcarlyle 3 weeks
i have never heard of slothcore. I am looking forward to it though.
Last week i got a telling off from the Spanish Rock Shot station manager for playing that drone track! I think he probably needs to hear some slothcore on the show... -
@candle 3 weeks
@calumcarlyle that would be awesome! #slothcore on Spanish Radio. Our first step on the journey to take over the world! LOL
See You In The Shadows… -
@kendrakinsey 3 weeks
I wanna do it too! I love some chill droney stuff!
-
@dzdandcunfsd 3 weeks
@calumcarlyle 😁 yes! It will be the next new craze 😂
@candle I think I may already be splitting it into subgenre's hah! too much delay on a drum track for my next one........sounds like some actual rolls being done. slothheavy? I'll be sure to put in extra naptime 😉 -
@gubna 3 weeks
Here's my submission:
https://fawm.org/songs/114982/
I want to figure out how I can slow down vocals without them being pitched down. Time stretch might work, but I think there's going to be some math... -
@bradbrubaker 3 weeks
I did it. Thank you @candle for inventing #slothcore.

@persaab 3 weeks
Slothcore sounds my thing so I’ll be doing it next.
-
@spacehoers420 3 weeks
I just tried my latest 8 bar loop at 40bpm, and it sounds pretty cool. It's also now 44 seconds, which is, like, 1/4 of a song already. Maybe I should do at least one slothcore track for my FAWM album.
-
@candle 3 weeks
@spacehoers420 : do it! You know you wanna… 😉
See You In The Shadows… -
@spacehoers420 3 weeks
"004" is going to be very very slothy. I added some distortion and some pauses, and it's starting to come together already.
edit: Aaaaaaand it's done! -
@dzdandcunfsd 3 weeks
I'm guessing #slothcore will get at least a double fawm win. It's just week 1 down 😁
https://fawm.org/songs/115058/ -
@elesimo 3 weeks
And it's a win!
I'm definitely making more songs! -

Don't know if this represents the genesis of Slothcore - if so @Candle is the originator ... and 'Horror in the Museum' may be the first slothcore track
A comment from last year's FAWM:
Candle - 2020-02-02 @ 05:53pm
Thank you for the great comment on Horror In The Museum. Horror Slothcore, eh? I like that 😀 See You In The Shadows… -
@persaab 3 weeks
I have to say that @dzdandcunfsd slothcore song lift my bar way too high that I can’t jump. But I’ll do my best or half of it.
-
@spikedirection 3 weeks
Check it out! #slothcore has now won FAWM! 🥳🎉✨🎆🎊
-
@yam655 3 weeks
@spikedirection Yeah, the naps are essential. I also aimed for clear delineation between the (virtual) instruments being used. They need to sound like different instruments. I have an ambient track that was influenced by my slothcore work, but it doesn't maintain instrument differentiation nor contain any naps.
@gubna To slow things down, I've used "rubberband" on the command-line. (cross-platform: Linux, macOS, Windows) https://breakfastquay.com/rubberband/
I did a track once that was inverted from the norm with a peppy instrumental piece that sat on top of a super slowed down backing vocal track. (Clearly, I don't need a made-up genre thread to get super experimental.)
When you use good tools to slow down audio, there's no limit to how far you can stretch things. You will need to decide whether you want it to be easily understood as language or not, though, as if it is stretched too far language disappears. -
@candle 3 weeks
@atitlan I totally forgot about that! Oh my. Yeah, Horror In The Museum did have some Slothcore elements. Just posted it to Soundcloud for others to chime in:

@nerdjealous 3 weeks
We're getting quite the collection here! The genre is beginning to dive into more areas of musical exploration, and it's all fun! 😁 loving the diverse styles now. Pretty much slothcore is a genre now, it may be micro right now but maybe we will all be pioneers to bring it to worldwide success? Is slothcore the new style every pop star mogul is going to take on board? Or will we be the next vaporware?? 😁
-
@elesimo 3 weeks
We should really make a compilation after FAWM, and get a bunch of songs together so people can listen to all of them at once. Maybe we could create a label in Bandcamp and put some of the songs there? I'd be happy to organize that if people are interested!
-
@dzdandcunfsd 3 weeks
@elesimo I'd be happy to donate any of mine. I liked the original(I think was your idea as well) to just donate any sells to that sloth conservation fund. I looked at that just briefly, but all seemed on the up and up. I'll stick around for at least a few weeks after fawm, and will volunteer to help you organize it 😁 I've been through most of these so far, but I have a feeling there's liable to be 100 by the time the month is up.

Inspired by this thread, I began playing with some sounds using the Kaoss Pad feature to control a Korg i-Wavestation this morning. Sadly, I disremembered the 20-40 target as 20-50 and chose 50. You should have heard me curse when I finished the piece and checked back on this thread. ("Check out the requirements first!" says the voice of my later father in my head). Er.... the Stonehenge Reproduction in "This is Spinal Tap" comes to mind. 😁

@elesimo & @spikedirection, were we serious about a FAWM #slothcore comp? 'Cos there's (as of this posting) 73 amazing #slothcore tracks that have been posted. We might have to release a Box Set 😁
See You In The Shadows… -
@elesimo 6 days
@candle I was thinking we could create a label in Bandcamp, and then release a few compilations — there's quite a few different styles inside #slothcore.
The Bandcamp label would be just to make it easy to send the money to each artist automatically. Though I'd also love to try to have a compilation where the revenue goes to the sloth conservation society. -
@standup 6 days
I started a slothcore thing tonight. Not done. But so far it's over 7 MINUTES! Anybody have an idea how long an "average" slothcore song is? I'm afraid I'm in snoozefest territory. Maybe I should write pop-punk-sloth.
-
@gardeningangel1 6 days
I love the idea of a compilation with proceeds going to sloth conservation. I wonder if we could somehow partner directly with an organuzation like slothconservation.com
-
@candle 6 days
@standup, I don't know what the average is, but I don't think there's anything wrong with a 7 minute song (this coming from the guy who's had three FAWM songs over the 22 minute mark 😉 ).
@gardeningangel1, yes - I especially love that idea. We should look into how it would be best to make it work.
See You In The Shadows… -
@tcelliott 6 days
@candle @elesimo - Maybe the funds could go to FAWM? Or, as @gardeningangel1 mentioned, another charity.
If you're asking people for permission to use their tracks I'm all in, if it's wanted. If not, then that's cool. I might wanna do a few touch ups to the mix, though, maybe. -
@dzdandcunfsd 6 days
@gardeningangel1 yeah that was the charity first suggested by @elesimo and I think its a grand idea. @standup I think 7 minutes is a perfectly acceptable time for a #slothcore song. I think that's about where my last one was after I snipped it in half 🤣
-
@candle 6 days
I really like the slothconservation.com suggestion.
@tcelliott, I think we do need to ask permission to see who wants their #slothcore tracks shared on a comp. Also, it'll give those artists a chance to remix or touch up their tracks past a GEFF (Good Enough For FAWM) state. We should maybe look at mastering services perhaps, so the final album is sonically cohesive.
Just thinking off the top o'my head…

That shirt is great! 🤣 I don't do FB, but willing to venture to Reddit LOL
-
@elesimo 1 day
Maybe we should do just email? I'm also moving away from Facebook, and I feel Reddit is too public and hard to have a conversation.
I created a Google group: https://groups.google.com/g/slothcore
There's a few things we need to do:
1. Reach out to #slothcore musicians and see who would like to be part of the compilation.
2. Decide on 1 or more compilations of songs, maybe grouping different styles? Or maybe making 1-3 albums with a mix of styles each?
3. Compile all the final mixes, and master everything together.
4. Publish the compilation(s). I think Bandcamp is an easy place to start, and I don't mind creating a label just for this. Maybe later use a proper distributor.
5. Find a charity that takes good care of sloths and donate the proceedings.
Today I reached out to a few friends who are biologists in Brazil asking if they recommended any particular sloth conservation society. I can do (4) and (5), and maybe (3), but my mastering skills are not the best.
Anything else that I forgot? -

@elesimo looks good to me! I'd rather discuss specifics there than reddit as well, even if a slothcore group is probably not going to garner much attention 😀

Sorry for the spam. We're starting to organize a #slothcore compilation, with the goal if making 1 or more albums and donating the proceeds to a sloth conservation society.
If you'd like to be part of this, please join the Google group https://groups.google.com/g/slothcore. This way we can move the conversation to email. -

@elesimo I think you've already done 1. I have the unlimited distrokid account and can use it for various artist compilations But there is a charge to keep it on there forever. (in case I drop my account and all the music I've uploaded gets removed.) Usually 50 bucks an album. It may be more affordable to use another service. Maybe check into amuse.io which is free. etc.,
I think there are three options for 3. One is have someone basically get the loudness similar. Which is fairly easy to do if the songs aren't already brickwalled/maximized. The second is to use a service like LANDR or similar. If someone has that service then they could do it. Otherwise I think it's about $3/song or so (from memory.) The fourth is to actually pay a mastering engineer to master all the songs.
Personally, I'm fine with having someone simply get the levels similar, and I have some plugins that can do that (Ozone etc.,) or I can do it manually. I'm willing to do that, but will need all the tracks submitted with around 6db headroom for it to work the best. If tracks come in hot then there is little I can do. I'm also perfectly willing to let someone else do it.
I'm willing to donate some cash for the project if that's what you/we decide.
And lastly, 2. Someone is gonna have to take the lead and make some decisions. The songs could literally be organized by submission. Have a deadline. All songs by that deadline are put on a compilation by submission date. The number of compilations determined by the number of submissions. Otherwise, someone(s) should just organize running order etc., to the best of their abilities and be done with it. That someone should be able to ignore complaints because that almost always arises in compilations. (Although with mostly FAWM ppl, it might be very minimal. You guys seem to be way more considerate than the average internet group.) -

Outstanding, sent in my request to join. My stuff was recorded live to one track so no chance of remixing but I'm happy for it to be mastered as required

Wow. Just looked & there's 22 members signed up in the Google Group. That's awesome! And it looks like we're starting to get some plans laid for the compilation album.
