2-chord cycle challenge

  • @leepat  Feb 5

    Hello good people,
Until yesterday it had never occurred to me that I could start a challenge too... So here's one:

    Use a two-chord cycle like
    Em Ebdim7
    Dm E7
    C Ab
and tag your song #2chordcycle (feel free not to stick to the cycle exclusively - this is meant to be easier than the Hank Williams in hell challenge).

Bonus challenge - use the following:

    Gsus4/D G/D Gsus4/D D7 Bm/D Dm A/C# C#dim Csus2 D7/C Cm D G/D

ideas about how to tag it are welcome ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @elesimo  Feb 5

@leepat can you explain what is a 2-chord cycle? I'm not sure I fully understand.

  • @leepat  Feb 5

itโ€™s simpler than it sounds @elesimo - just repeat the two chords over and over

  • @elesimo  Feb 5

Oh, I thought there was some special relationship between the chords, like they formed a cycle. Thanks for clarifying! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @jmadison  Feb 5

I think for me it's a challenge to use more than two chords.. ๐Ÿ˜€

I think I accidentally completed this challenge with my first song. It contains only B and F#

  • @scottlake Feb 6

From what I can tell, The War On Drugs uses just two chords in lots of his songs. And it is wonderful.

  • @scottlake Feb 6

I just had a little go with C Ab and Iโ€™m in.

  • @kirjis Feb 6

    Uhhh... that's not a challenge, that's my MO. ๐Ÿ˜

  • @leka Feb 6

"You need only two chords to make a good song. And most of the times the other chord is unnecessary"

  • @splittybooms  Feb 6

Hey, was giving this thread the sneaky-eye because I like this kind of stuff.
    Decided to do one.
Will check out others (only see one so far?) 2moro, as sleep calls my name.

  • @edwardsmusic Feb 6

"One chord is fine. Two is pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz." - Lou Reed

  • @sw1n3flu  Feb 6

    what's the tag @leepat ?

  • @leepat  Feb 6

@sw1n3flu I suggested #2chordcycle donโ€™t know why itโ€™s not coloured in the top post.
    but I see @splittybooms used #two-chord-cycle.
donโ€™t matter much as long as it keeps you writing ๐Ÿ˜€
do post your song here too - keeps the thread growing ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • @leepat  Feb 6

    @edwardsmusic Lou Reedโ€™s cool but I admit Iโ€™m into jazz, yeah ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @sw1n3flu  Feb 6

cool thanks ๐Ÿ˜€ Just done one in combination with a skirmish.

  • @conorg Feb 6

This is a good one, will give it a go today. And try to resist that third chord tempting me...

  • @leepat  Feb 6

@conorg try as I may, I can never resist that ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @ustaknow Feb 6

    Two chords and the truth:

Some of my best songs are a chord fragment (1) string scrap with hints of some key to then sing, noodle over ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @sph  Feb 6

Nice idea. Just found out my first song qualifies for this:
    Alternating chords are C D# G# and C F# A

    But I'm gonna write another.

  • @leepat  Feb 6

@sph yeah, those are actually Ab (Ab C Eb) and Gbdim (or Adim7 if you add Eb (A C Eb Gb)) - good choice ๐Ÿ˜‰
    keepโ€™em coming!

  • @rshakesp  Feb 6

https://fawm.org/songs/114042/ I think this counts - I got a bit wild with 4 chords in the chorus - but the majority is built in two.
Chords are hard to define - a note cluster of g, b flat, c, d and e followed by gm6 - I think it turned out well

  • @abolishumanity Feb 6

We accidentally did this, but it's punk, so... not a lot of chords usually anyway. I think it's F#5 and G5, but I don't remember what we were tuned to. Something like that anyway.

  • @mhorning Feb 6

I have a couple songs (two maybe) where the chords are Am and G. Which begs the question, what key is it in? Because each chord is in the other one's key. I'm sure there is a technical name for this, but I studies Physics, not Music Theory.

  • @arendleejessurun Feb 7

All my years of songwriting, and I've yet to write a two-chord song. I've gotta try this.

Fwiw, David Bennett has a neat video on YouTube of a ton of two chord songs, some of which surprised me.

  • @rainchaser  Feb 7

    Definitely sounds interesting!

  • @leepat  Feb 7

@mhorning what defines it is the note in the bass - @splittybooms was doing the same sequence above.
alternatively, look at the 6th degree - if itโ€™s F#, youโ€™re more likely in the key of G, if itโ€™s F - more likely in Am.
    could also be C, Em..
itโ€™s all relative, of course, might as well be in both keys simultaneously ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • @leepat  Feb 7

cool, thx for the YT reference!

  • @roddy  Feb 7

    Here's mine
It's a jazzy instrumental done with three ukuleles using Dm and D flat diminished only.

  • @nateger Feb 7

@leepat Love this challenge idea. Accepted!

  • @nateger Feb 8

Here is my tune! I used the tag #2chordsong in case anyone wants to use the same tag ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @ustaknow Feb 10

    "Boulder County Rose"

    A and E

    (Occassional D ๐Ÿ˜€ )

  • @meggie Feb 11

Thanks for another challenge to try! Here's mine! https://fawm.org/songs/116257/

  • @sailingmagpie  Feb 11

I enjoyed the limitation of this challenge. Here's mine:

  • @pipewrench67  Feb 12

Thought I'd give it a go
    Gsus4/D & C#dim

  • @ofishell  Feb 12

I kept it short, and went for the obvious C/F cycle, but I have to say that I'm happy with the result:

  • @gubna Feb 12

I combined #whats-your-sign and the 2 chord challange here:

  • @leka Feb 13

pirate song with 2 chords (Dm and C)

  • @kissinginpublic  Feb 13

This is most of my songs! Ha! ๐Ÿ˜

  • @robynmackenzie  Feb 14

    Two chords, three notes: https://fawm.org/songs/117603/

  • @scottlake Feb 15

Using the very first suggested chords, C and Aflat https://fawm.org/songs/117713/
    I tagged it "2-chord"

  • @mhorning Feb 15

Simple two chords. Using my baritone. So the chord shapes are Em and D, but the actual chords are Bm and A. (transposing instruments are so cool)

  • @thedutchwidows  Feb 15

An unintentional one here with just G and Am. They sounded so nice, I just stayed with them throughout!

  • @siebass  Feb 15

Dream electro-pop here; put it on and chill; 2 chords all the way through. Was fun.

  • @mardeycranbleson Feb 17

Not too hard for me, I just threw away my usual self indulgent third chord! https://fawm.org/songs/118840/

  • @tunecat  Feb 18

Here's mine (actually found this thread by accident) The vocals not added yet.. Please please please if you feel so inspired, send me audio samples of singing the chorus (the trumpet line) to get a crowd effect.. Plus any other bits - maybe get in touch... I was really happy with how this came out..

  • @wylddandelyon Feb 18

    Here's my two-chord song: https://fawm.org/songs/119043/

  • @leepat  Feb 27

hey guys, hereโ€™s my (failed) 2 chord song at last too (whose germ prompted this challenge) - https://fawm.org/songs/123370/
I plan on checking out all of yours in March.

  • @conorg Feb 28
