Cowcore Challenge

    Cowbell is a lovely solo instrument! Give the bell the spotlight as the “core” of a song. This is not for the clink-clink-clink variety of cowbell, though I approve of that too, but instead full out "the song can't exist without the cowbell". I understand there’s not a great chance for radio play but it is excellent therapy and a fun challenge. At least to me, Princess of the Cowbell.

    Tag your creation CowCore so we can find each other. Feel free to add your link below as well!

    I always thought this was cowcore 🤣🤣

    Anyway I may well have a go at this 😁

  • @dragondreams  Jan 22

    Geoffrey has been practising his paradiddles! At least, that's what we think he's been doing. I know our cleaning bill has almost doubled and the local farmer is missing some livestock...

    So YES, the Castle Dragondreams Houseband Cowbell Section will be making an appearance at some point.

    As I mentioned on my Twitch livestream this week, Guy MItchelmore just devoted a half-hour show on his ThinkSpace YouTube channel to making a track using nothing except a cowbell:

  • @dragondreams  Jan 22

    @headfirstonly -Awesome!

  • @tseaver  Jan 23

    @headfirstonly Bowed cowbell, even.

  • @headfirstonly  Jan 23

    @tseaver I know, right? And it *works*!

  • @sph  Jan 23

    Time to look for the double bass bow and rosin...

  • @darcistrutt  Jan 23

    @headfirstonly I'm more of a purist as you know. Forget all the enhancements and just give me the original sounds. Either that or I haven't learned how to use the computer software as well...just maybe that's it. In any case, that was amazing and I just may need to get a bow. 😀 Bring on the bell!

  • @yam655  Jan 25

    I'm looking for a cowbell VST. I found -- but it's an instrument for UVI and seems to have a broken installer.

    Any good cowbell virtual instruments out there?

  • @candle  Jan 27

    @yam655 There's also:

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @tseaver  Jan 27

    @yam655 If'n you don't wanna lay down cash for one, you can get a reasonable facsimile of a cowbell with any large-format tin-clad (steel) can -- use a hammer handle or other hefty hardwood beater for best results.

    In a pinch, you could probably even beat on one of the crusted-out electric burner pans you've got lying around in the garage. 😀

  • @kable  Jan 27

    Gonna be honest, based on the title alone, I thought this challenge was gonna be electronic hardcore music with some cow-inspired lead synthesizer or something like that. Hmmm . . . what if I just did that anyway . . .

  • @sw1n3flu  Jan 27

    @kable Do It!

  • @timfatchen  Jan 27

    Bowed cowbell? "You can't do that!" cowcored The Beatles and I agree!!!

  • @elesimo  Jan 29

    I'm in! My local hardware store sells cowbells, I'm going to get one. 😀

    I always wanted to have a cowbell. When I worked at Facebook we used to have "vending machines" where you could get office items for free — keyboards, headphones, mouses, batteries, cables, etc. You would swipe your badge, make your selection and get whatever you needed to carry on with your work.

    One time I visited the Texas office, in Austin, and to my surprise THEY HAD A COWBELL in the vending machine! I immediately swiped my badge, pressed the number for the cowbell, but the machine was not configured to give it, it was just there as a gimmick. 😞

    Now I'm finally going to have my own cowbell!

    I'm a percussionist now (among other things), but the first bit of percussion I really owned was my cowbell. I went to the local music shop, bought one for my then-girlfriend (it may still be in possession of her family; who knows?) and a smaller one for myself.

    Having accidentally left my violin and guitar at home, living in student hall the only musical outlet I had was my cowbell. I spent months listening to music on my PC and tapping the cowbell along with it, learning about all the different sounds a bell can make when hit at various points with varying force.

    Today I managed to unearth my cowbell. As I'm trying to focus on hand percussion this year (as opposed to my electric drum kit), doubtless it will get used. I'll use the tag if so!

  • @wobbiewobbit  Feb 9

    i forgot to post here the one i did last week - Can I Groove Though?

  • @krayzie003  Feb 10

    I forgot about this challenge. It's been fun in the past but I may have to see about elevate my personal challenge to a song made only with cowbell this year.

  • @darcistrutt  Feb 14

    A cowcore song from a story cube roll. I'm in my happy place...

  • @elesimo  Feb 24

    And here's my song, combining many of the challenges I still wanted to do:

  • @auditasum  Feb 26

    The cowbell steals the show in my song.

  • @elesimo  Mar 2

    Do you know why cows wear bells?

    Because their horns don't work!
