The Darkness, it Calls to Me!

  • @cblack Jan 21

Okay, I was just over on the 50/90 site looking for music to listen to, and I found only 7 songs tagged as metal, and 0 (zero!) as goth or cybergoth. Nooooo!!!

So this is a thread for those who are shocked and dismayed at those stats. Together, we can make the darkness rise once more, like the fetid souls of a thousand hung killers! Rise, darkness!

If you make a dark song of any subgenre, please, post it here. Together we can ply the rivers of eternal damnation! Ahahahahaha!!!

    (Also there will be cupcakes.)

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Jan 21

Only if the cupcakes have smiley faces made with sprinkles ๐Ÿ˜

  • @cblack Jan 21

How about skulls made with vanilla icing?

  • @candle  Jan 21

I'm in for the cupcakes. I mean, dark songs sort of just crop up. I am Candle after all, a minute flicker against the darknessโ€ฆ ooooโ€ฆ I like that! Gotta use that somewhere.

@dzdandcunfsd : leave us some of the sprinkles, eh?

    See You In The Shadowsโ€ฆ

  • @candle  Jan 21

@cblack : I love it! Just don't let @dzdandcunfsd put too many sprinkles on them! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    See You In The Shadowsโ€ฆ

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Jan 21

    @cblack skulls work too!!

@candle yeah my sprinkles are 21+ and come with warnings ๐Ÿ˜

  • @candle  Jan 21

@dzdandcunfsd: I'll stick to my own sprinkles then. Thanks for the warning.

    See You In The Shadowsโ€ฆ

  • @cblack Jan 21

Psychotropic skulls... Sounds like a fun evening. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @yam655  Jan 21

What's the bare minimum for a song to fit this category?

I mean, it's easy enough to go to http://metallizer.dk/ and pick some song ideas, but how do I know I have a metal, goth, or cybergoth song? And what's the difference?

Maybe folks have been making the music, but just not tagging it properly.

  • @cblack Jan 21

Go with your gut. If it feels like it fits those categories, tag it as such. If not, don't. ๐Ÿ˜€

    I don't want to be the genre-police.

  • @cblack Jan 21

Just hoping to connect with other goths/metalheads in this crazy game we call FAWM.

  • @yam655  Jan 21

@cblack I'm really only asking because I'm likely to do it wrong. My brother -- also a C. Black -- is also a metalhead. I'd like to give it an honest effort.

I did a little research. Please tell me if any of these look wrong.

    http://mmusic-zone.blogspot.com/2013/02/characteristics-of-heavy-me...

    https://www.loudersound.com/features/goth-everything-you-need-to-know

    http://wakeupgoth.com/types-of-goths/the-cyber-goth/

Hmm... I was reading that music can be heavy without guitars. There aren't that many days before FAWM, but I may have to experiment.

    https://www.invisibleoranges.com/the-10-heaviest-modern-bands-witho...

  • @cblack Jan 21

@yam655 I'm not gonna say yay or nay to any of that. As I said, I'm not the genre police. Just gonna throw out the idea that metal/goth is a cultural group. If you don't really identify with the cultural group, then it's more of an academic matter... "Do I fit the definitions?" rather than "This is so me!"

Perhaps ask for people's musical recommendations? I'll start:

    Black metal:

    Cradle of Filth
    Dimmu Borgir
    Marduk
    Cadaveria

    Death metal:

    Arch Enemy
    Dark Tranquillity
    The Agonist

    Goth:

    Bauhaus
    Sisters of Mercy
    Emilie Autumn

    Cybergoth:

    X-Rx
    God Module
    Combichrist
    Noisuf-X
    Centhron

    Goth metal:

    Nightwish
    Epica
    Sirenia
    Within Temptation
    Xandria

    ...

If you listen to some of those bands on YouTube, that'll give you a better idea of the genre than you're likely to get from an article.

Anyone else wanna throw some suggestions? ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @cblack Jan 21

I'll also say, though, that the metal and goth communities are very welcoming. An honest attempt at metal is likely to be met with cheers, even if it's not quite "there" yet, for instance.

As I said, go with your gut.

  • @coolparadiso  Jan 21

You @cblack and @sapient are my go to metal souls!

  • @wrenarcher  Jan 21

    @yam655
Iโ€™m pretty sure a song qualifies as metal, goth metal, cybergoth, etc if the song incorporates a majority of the following... it has to talk about momma,, trains, trucks, prison, and getting' drunk. ๐Ÿ˜

Wait... i think I might have that confused with another genr...

Nope. Thatโ€™s it. You have those subjects in your song and youโ€™re definitely metal.

  • @sapient  Jan 21

Metal is one of those weird spaces where there are people who defend utterly the boundaries, and those who think it's more of a state of mind.
I fall squarely in the latter camp.
So welcome - if you want to be here and play with the noisiest box of toys in the FAWM playroom then have at it! It'll be a blast! ๐Ÿ˜

  • @ustaknow Jan 21

*cblack this is an interesting developing thread. Labels and what they mean and then the subcats... there are a number of docu-videos that go down the line of sub-cats of different genre... e.g., at one time, there was just, "heavy metal" (R&R), now...?

So, what's my point? So, glad you asked... I fully realize I will intentionally "do" a track that if you actually read and thought about the words, - pretty dark, as that goes. No hidden messages, no subliminal "suicide songs" (yeah, one late night I found myself rocking to a great track, then realized, -- that was the lyrics... a chant about being worthless and should die...); but, folks have mentioned, "gee, that's dark"... kinda wish it wasn't.

I kind of wish there was a subcata-gory for songs with dark lyrics, so to speak, but not bathed in 1-5 power chord modulations. If I had a full option to finish track my stuff, it would be a cross between Apocolyptica and Trans Siberian O. -- Well, not all of them, but many.

Anyway, so, while none of that may make any sense ๐Ÿ˜€ well, it does to me. (Reminds me of the song YMCA, and some friends laughing at how mainstream it got, - and versus what it meant in their crowd... people hear what they wanna hear ๐Ÿ˜€ ) .

  • @sapient  Jan 21

@ustaknow - Your last sentence... amen to that ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • @ianuarius  Jan 21

    Heavy Metal:

    Iron Maiden
    Rainbow
    Danzig
    Ghost
    Bruce Dickinson

    Machinae Supremacy
    Metalite
    Rhapsody

    Progressive Metal:

    Dream Theater
    Haken
    Leprous
    Myrath
    Pagan's Mind

    Thrash Metal:

    Megadeth
    Stone

  • @sapient  Jan 21

    Nice lists!

    Ihsahn
    Zeal & Ardor

  • @yam655  Jan 21

In a way, I think I've kind of been running from metal since I was a teenager. Dark, discordant, confrontational. I frequently go there, but I'm always leaning away, trying to be something else. What will I get if I lean into it instead of away? Right now, I really want to find out.

@wrenarcher I can probably do more of that than you'd expect in a metal-ish song. My matrilineal line has been institutionalized for generations, which ties in to the prison motif. My biological mother never learned to drive, which also ties in to mass transit and trains.

Your description made me think of "Mama, cars and mass transit" https://yam655.com/j/2014-02/06_r1227/ from my first FAWM. I sang it to my youngest who wasn't speaking yet. It ends with the line, "Except when you return home, all your friends would be dead."

I'm in the "all songs are about death if you sing them long enough" camp.

  • @paulh1237  Jan 21

I'm just going to use this for band recommendations, keep 'em coming!

I've always loved a bit of metal, but it's a daunting genre to try and write/record for me at the best of times, not say under fawm constraints (so, the only time I record anything!) I splashed out on BIAS AMP 2 and erm, a squier mustang (xD) however, so let's give this a proper go! I might be back here before too long begging for some tips, and probably some vocals, hmm..

  • @terroratspacecamp  Jan 21

I'm shooting for a very experimental album this year. I don't know what will land in the metal genre but I have grunge roots and a love of goth, shoegaze and blackgaze so some of what I'll do is probably going to lean in those directions. At the very least, it will be lyrically leaning in the goth direction.

  • @cblack Jan 21

@ianuarius Oh my Goddess, Pagan's Mind! I had 1 of their CDs that I picked up because of the band name. Really awesome stuff! Can't remember which CD it was, but I no longer have it, which I regret. I never see them at the record store, but maybe when I have some spare money I'll order a few online...

@coolparadiso Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence! Placing me with @sapient is a real compliment! He was my first ever FAWM crush. ๐Ÿ˜

  • @cblack Jan 21

Looked it up. The album was "Celestial Entrance". A bloody brilliant album.

  • @sapient  Jan 21

    @cblack Aw, shucks... ๐Ÿ˜

  • @ianuarius  Jan 21

@cblack That was my first PM as well. Tho all their albums are pretty good.

  • @pfaffbrill  Jan 21

Even though I am more in the electronic camp I really like some dark metal stuff from time to time. One of my favs is Katatonia.

  • @headfirstonly  Jan 21

Lots of my favourites already mentioned, but don't forget
    Voivod
    Ulver
    Scar Symmetry
    Death
    Watchtower
    Cynic
and (and I can't believe nobody's given them a shout out yet)
    Meshuggah

  • @headfirstonly  Jan 21

I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Jeff Wagner's excellent "Mean Deviation: four decades of progressive heavy metal" if you want a comprehensive overview of the genre. It's worth it just for the photograph of Watchtower / Spastic Ink guitarist Ron Jarzombek being utterly confused by the teaching of legendary fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth (RIP).

  • @sapient  Jan 21

@headfirstonly Ulver. A proper class act. Blut Aus Nord and Dodheimsgard are also worth checking out if weirdly progressive black metal floats yer boat...

  • @ianuarius  Jan 21

    And Moon Tooth!

  • @complexissimple Jan 22

@wrenarcher now I want to do a metal version of that song.

  • @gammafied Jan 24

I've done one metal song for the last couple of FAWMs. I struggle with drums because I'm not a drummer. I dream of double kicks in my song! ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿฅ

I tend to like some prog metal like Dream Theatre or Saytr. I also like vocalists that are really melodic like Avenged Sevenfold and orchestral metal. There are so many subgenres. Electrรณnica has the same problem.

  • @nerdjealous  Jan 24

I've made a couple of Mike Patton inspired songs during 100/180 last year. 'Sexy Zombie Magazine' and 'insomnia induced experiment'. I thought they were good tracks and would consider them under experimental metal of some sub genre or other... ๐Ÿ˜ I might do some Kvelertak inspired stuff this time if I can pluck up some meatymetal courage!!

Also I would like to try some New Wave style Goth stuff some time, so if I think on I will include the relevant hashtags and posts!! ๐Ÿ˜

  • @darebear  Jan 25

Iโ€™ll be mostly dishing out metal, itโ€™s my comfort zone. Itโ€™ll be some combination of power metal, black metal, orchestral, electronic, and rock. Letโ€™s just call it prog. It might not be the darkest stuff youโ€™ll hear, but I promise there will be darkness in my heart at all times.

  • @stevenwesleyguiles  Jan 25

    CUPCAKES!

  • @airbagtester  Jan 25

@headfirstonly I saw Meshuggah open for Tool back around 2002 in Philadelpha PA at the Spectrum. They only had half the PA system on... it was very confusing hearing all the polyrhythms on the first pass and then a second time bounced back from the rear of the arena! ๐Ÿ˜

  • @elainedimasi  Jan 25

This thread sent me surfing and I am now watching this video called:

    I LOVE FAWM SO MUCH

  • @cblack Feb 3

    https://fawm.org/songs/112166/ - A dark electro song (ish).

  • @cblack Feb 3

    https://fawm.org/songs/111362/ - And a black-metal a-cappella pagan blessing. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @johnstaples  Feb 3

I'm pretty sure this one qualifies as "dark"! ๐Ÿ˜

    https://fawm.org/songs/110872/

  • @emplate  Feb 3

Feels like I'm quite busy with work and band stuff, but I'll surely try to craft some bulldozing tunes ๐Ÿ˜ Gonna have a blast listening through all the stuff you guys will come up with!

  • @cblack Feb 3

@emplate Glad to have you with us! I've always enjoyed your music.

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 3

I usually have a go at doing at least one metal song each FAWM. My big box of ideas at present doesn't have any - been concentrating on songs that are more 'me' I guess! But I'll see if I can bust one out before February is up.

  • @apolez3 Feb 3

@cblack where is the 50/90 idk if I have seen it or not can't find.

  • @cblack Feb 3

    http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/

It runs from July 4th 'til October 1st (90 days).

  • @apolez3 Feb 3

    @cblack oh thanks. xoxo

  • @jamkar  Feb 3

Didnโ€™t see Ramstein listed. That is my entry point.

  • @emplate  Feb 3

@cblack thanks, man! The same, the same ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @terroratspacecamp  Feb 3

@cblack suggested that I post this one here.
    https://fawm.org/songs/112197/

  • @raygungirls Feb 3

Most of my songs are darker. I tag them with Goth or Goth Metal or Goth Rock. Already have one up that's Goth. The other is more Metal, and I'm about to upload another one that's Metal/Hardcore/Punk.. or somewhere in-between.

  • @nerdjealous  Feb 3

    https://fawm.org/songs/112441/
my goth track!! ๐Ÿ˜ ill get round to listening everybody's later, needs me some food ah do...

  • @darebear  Feb 4

Math rock meets prog metal for my first offering to the weirder of the metal gods. Not terribly dark, back I growl "Shadows" a few times...:
    https://fawm.org/songs/111986/

  • @cblack Feb 6

https://fawm.org/songs/113881/ Metal Zone goodness. Or Metal Zone crapness, depending on your preference. ๐Ÿ˜

  • @nadine Feb 6

I love cybergoth and aggrotech music, but I don't know how to get these harsh and distorted sounds. Originally coming from trance this shouldn't be THAT hard to produce, but I already fail with the samples. If anybody knows, I would be in for collaboration. Just spam my profile.

@cblack: Your cybergoth and goth metal playlist looks exactly like mine!

  • @chaotrick Feb 6

This year I'm diving into the darkness as well. I'm producing electronic music, but I also tend to borrow a lot from other genres, creating various weird fusions. And since you've mentioned metal, here's my downtempo song with heavy guitars. ๐Ÿ˜€

    https://fawm.org/songs/113505/

And here's the other one, with clean guitars, but still with some spicy darkness sprinkled into it.

    https://fawm.org/songs/111623/

  • @cblack Feb 6

@nadine Ha! You obviously have good taste in music then! ๐Ÿ˜ And I also struggle to get the cybergoth sounds.

  • @paulh1237  Feb 8

I finally got involved with something I can unequivocally say is metal! I'm quite chuffed with it, mostly due to @chrismyth02 supplying some fantastic metal vocals: https://fawm.org/songs/114900/

  • @chrismyth02 Feb 8

@paulh1237 a genuine pleasure - I was like a kid at Christmas when I heard the track, couldn't wait to do something with it. glad you dig it.

  • @persaab Feb 9

Mostly I do listen metal and play in thrash metal band. But here I just wanna do something different. If my pc wakes up I might but out some darker stuff. Who knows. Just frustrated to pc at the moment. ๐Ÿ˜

  • @nadine Feb 12

Written another metal track with my synthesizers today. Metalheads, where art thou?! I need your guitars, bass, drums,maybe... a hurdy-gurdy?!
    https://fawm.org/songs/116998/
I think its about time to learn these instruments on my own T_T

  • @writeandwrong  Feb 13

Here's a dark lyric if anyone wants to "metal" with it.
    "Rest in Pieces"
    https://fawm.org/songs/110984/

  • @povosos  Feb 13

    Is this dark enough?: https://fawm.org/songs/117379/

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 14

Im not at all surprised! I think i told you at the start i went hunting last year 50/90 i think and i only found 2. You and Sapient. I cant do metal anymore so i listen when i can! I have found a few more metal songs this Fawm. Hopefully i can get some more in this thread!

  • @cblack Feb 15

Thanking all of you for the darker songs! I realised this morning that I find the emotions in darker songs waaaaay more interesting than in "normal" music. I always knew I preferred them, but it just made sense to me this morning that I find the emotions more interesting. With emphasis on "interesting".

I now want to do a faux 80s goth rock track... Plenty of metal this year, but very little goth. So that's my personal challenge!

  • @cblack Feb 16

    https://fawm.org/songs/118481/

Not quite what I was going for, but it's "gothish". Hope you enjoy. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @nadine Feb 18

Here it is. Some electronic industrial aggrotech stuff.
    https://fawm.org/songs/119436/

  • @brideoffester Feb 18

Hi everyone, I'm aiming to make goth music. You can check my account for what I have so far. I have on completed song, one vocal demo, and two-lyrics only songs. Feel free to tell me your thoughts!

  • @glasscrow Feb 19

    ...WHO DISTURBS MY SLUMBER??

Actually, I'm embarrassed I didn't see this thread until now ๐Ÿฅด

I hold off on a lot of the darkness for FAWM because it feels so out of place, but I'm hoping to end with a bang this year...or an aggrotech banger...maybe both.

  • @hmorg  Feb 19

Metal is my bread and butter, I've been playing in metal bands for more than 20 years. That is why I fall back on metal, and rather extreme metal at that, when I can think of nothing else. Maybe some year I'll do no metal at all, but that year is not this year. Already I've written at least 2 songs I consider huge successes personally, and hope to achieve yet a few more.

    (post) black metal: https://fawm.org/songs/118217/
    Death/doom: https://fawm.org/songs/118627/

  • @sapient  Feb 21

@glasscrow - no, it's not out of place! We're in a bit of minority, that's for sure, but I'm so pleased to see how much metal there is this year! ๐Ÿ˜

  • @cblack Feb 22

@glasscrow @sapient Yes! We're in the minority, but we still have a right to make and share darker music.

We may not get 30 comments like the ukulele fans, but there's definitely a place for us here.

And for what it's worth, I've had FAWMers who write Christian music tell me that my black metal a-cappella (previous years) was their new favourite genre. Just as an example.

There's definitely room for us here. Thankyou, FAWM! I appreciate it. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @glasscrow Feb 22

    yay~๐Ÿ–ค

I'd welcome more love on this track from you people! I don't make metal, though, I make like the electronic equivalent of that ๐Ÿ˜

    https://fawm.org/songs/120630/

  • @emplate  Feb 22

I've managed only a couple tracks this year, but on the other hand, I'm quite pleased with them.

    Post-punk meets black metal: https://fawm.org/songs/118238/
Dark and oppressing black/death quite in the vein of my band, Loputon Suo: https://fawm.org/songs/120652/

Currently working on a boneheaded death metal track, so we'll see what will come out of that!

Also going through stuff tagged "metal" and trying to comment as much as I have time for. So far it seems you guys have done marvelous job! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @emplate  Feb 22

Btw, listened to your track, @glasscrow, loved it! I hope there's more dark and disturbing stuff coming from you! ๐Ÿ˜

  • @emplate  Feb 22

Got the death metal track done: https://fawm.org/songs/121052/ Am quite pleased with it.

  • @hmorg  Feb 23

Last night I had a dream of which the only thing I can remember is that someone said "The Man is just trying to keep black metal down", which has made me think about writing a song about how black metal is actual art even though it sounds harsh and abrasive to most people. Anyone wanna help me?

  • @tomslatter  Feb 23

Lots of metal influence in my music. Eg. This one which is all about human sacrifice and to my ear sounds like latter Day Opeth: https://fawm.org/songs/114105/

My latest song even sounds a bit metal which doesn't often happen.

  • @cblack Feb 28
