The Darkness, it Calls to Me!

@cblack 6 weeks
Okay, I was just over on the 50/90 site looking for music to listen to, and I found only 7 songs tagged as metal, and 0 (zero!) as goth or cybergoth. Nooooo!!!
So this is a thread for those who are shocked and dismayed at those stats. Together, we can make the darkness rise once more, like the fetid souls of a thousand hung killers! Rise, darkness!
If you make a dark song of any subgenre, please, post it here. Together we can ply the rivers of eternal damnation! Ahahahahaha!!!
(Also there will be cupcakes.) -

@dzdandcunfsd : leave us some of the sprinkles, eh?

What's the bare minimum for a song to fit this category?
I mean, it's easy enough to go to http://metallizer.dk/ and pick some song ideas, but how do I know I have a metal, goth, or cybergoth song? And what's the difference?
Maybe folks have been making the music, but just not tagging it properly. -
@cblack 6 weeks
Go with your gut. If it feels like it fits those categories, tag it as such. If not, don't. ๐
I don't want to be the genre-police. -

Just hoping to connect with other goths/metalheads in this crazy game we call FAWM.
-
@yam655 6 weeks
@cblack I'm really only asking because I'm likely to do it wrong. My brother -- also a C. Black -- is also a metalhead. I'd like to give it an honest effort.
I did a little research. Please tell me if any of these look wrong.

https://www.loudersound.com/features/goth-everything-you-need-to-know

Hmm... I was reading that music can be heavy without guitars. There aren't that many days before FAWM, but I may have to experiment.
https://www.invisibleoranges.com/the-10-heaviest-modern-bands-witho... -
@cblack 6 weeks
@yam655 I'm not gonna say yay or nay to any of that. As I said, I'm not the genre police. Just gonna throw out the idea that metal/goth is a cultural group. If you don't really identify with the cultural group, then it's more of an academic matter... "Do I fit the definitions?" rather than "This is so me!"
Perhaps ask for people's musical recommendations? I'll start:
Black metal:
Cradle of Filth
Dimmu Borgir
Marduk
Cadaveria
Death metal:
Arch Enemy
Dark Tranquillity
The Agonist
Goth:
Bauhaus
Sisters of Mercy
Emilie Autumn
Cybergoth:
X-Rx
God Module
Combichrist
Noisuf-X
Centhron
Goth metal:
Nightwish
Epica
Sirenia
Within Temptation
Xandria
...
If you listen to some of those bands on YouTube, that'll give you a better idea of the genre than you're likely to get from an article.
Anyone else wanna throw some suggestions? ๐ -
@cblack 6 weeks
I'll also say, though, that the metal and goth communities are very welcoming. An honest attempt at metal is likely to be met with cheers, even if it's not quite "there" yet, for instance.
As I said, go with your gut. -

Iโm pretty sure a song qualifies as metal, goth metal, cybergoth, etc if the song incorporates a majority of the following... it has to talk about momma,, trains, trucks, prison, and getting' drunk. ๐
Wait... i think I might have that confused with another genr...
Nope. Thatโs it. You have those subjects in your song and youโre definitely metal. -
@sapient 6 weeks
Metal is one of those weird spaces where there are people who defend utterly the boundaries, and those who think it's more of a state of mind.
I fall squarely in the latter camp.
So welcome - if you want to be here and play with the noisiest box of toys in the FAWM playroom then have at it! It'll be a blast! ๐ -

*cblack this is an interesting developing thread. Labels and what they mean and then the subcats... there are a number of docu-videos that go down the line of sub-cats of different genre... e.g., at one time, there was just, "heavy metal" (R&R), now...?
So, what's my point? So, glad you asked... I fully realize I will intentionally "do" a track that if you actually read and thought about the words, - pretty dark, as that goes. No hidden messages, no subliminal "suicide songs" (yeah, one late night I found myself rocking to a great track, then realized, -- that was the lyrics... a chant about being worthless and should die...); but, folks have mentioned, "gee, that's dark"... kinda wish it wasn't.
I kind of wish there was a subcata-gory for songs with dark lyrics, so to speak, but not bathed in 1-5 power chord modulations. If I had a full option to finish track my stuff, it would be a cross between Apocolyptica and Trans Siberian O. -- Well, not all of them, but many.
Anyway, so, while none of that may make any sense ๐ well, it does to me. (Reminds me of the song YMCA, and some friends laughing at how mainstream it got, - and versus what it meant in their crowd... people hear what they wanna hear ๐ ) . -

In a way, I think I've kind of been running from metal since I was a teenager. Dark, discordant, confrontational. I frequently go there, but I'm always leaning away, trying to be something else. What will I get if I lean into it instead of away? Right now, I really want to find out.
@wrenarcher I can probably do more of that than you'd expect in a metal-ish song. My matrilineal line has been institutionalized for generations, which ties in to the prison motif. My biological mother never learned to drive, which also ties in to mass transit and trains.
Your description made me think of "Mama, cars and mass transit" https://yam655.com/j/2014-02/06_r1227/ from my first FAWM. I sang it to my youngest who wasn't speaking yet. It ends with the line, "Except when you return home, all your friends would be dead."
I'm in the "all songs are about death if you sing them long enough" camp. -

I'm just going to use this for band recommendations, keep 'em coming!
I've always loved a bit of metal, but it's a daunting genre to try and write/record for me at the best of times, not say under fawm constraints (so, the only time I record anything!) I splashed out on BIAS AMP 2 and erm, a squier mustang (xD) however, so let's give this a proper go! I might be back here before too long begging for some tips, and probably some vocals, hmm.. -
@terroratspacecamp 6 weeks
I'm shooting for a very experimental album this year. I don't know what will land in the metal genre but I have grunge roots and a love of goth, shoegaze and blackgaze so some of what I'll do is probably going to lean in those directions. At the very least, it will be lyrically leaning in the goth direction.

I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Jeff Wagner's excellent "Mean Deviation: four decades of progressive heavy metal" if you want a comprehensive overview of the genre. I tend to like some prog metal like Dream Theatre or Saytr. I also like vocalists that are really melodic like Avenged Sevenfold and orchestral metal. There are so many subgenres. Electrรณnica has the same problem. -

I've made a couple of Mike Patton inspired songs during 100/180 last year. 'Sexy Zombie Magazine' and 'insomnia induced experiment'. I thought they were good tracks and would consider them under experimental metal of some sub genre or other... ๐ I might do some Kvelertak inspired stuff this time if I can pluck up some meatymetal courage!!
Also I would like to try some New Wave style Goth stuff some time, so if I think on I will include the relevant hashtags and posts!! ๐ -

Iโll be mostly dishing out metal, itโs my comfort zone. Itโll be some combination of power metal, black metal, orchestral, electronic, and rock. Letโs just call it prog. It might not be the darkest stuff youโll hear, but I promise there will be darkness in my heart at all times.

Metal is my bread and butter, I've been playing in metal bands for more than 20 years. That is why I fall back on metal, and rather extreme metal at that, when I can think of nothing else. @glasscrow @sapient Yes! We're in the minority, but we still have a right to make and share darker music.
We may not get 30 comments like the ukulele fans, but there's definitely a place for us here.
And for what it's worth, I've had FAWMers who write Christian music tell me that my black metal a-cappella (previous years) was their new favourite genre. Just as an example.
There's definitely room for us here. Thankyou, FAWM! I appreciate it. ๐ -
