Political or topical songs

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 1

Some people are interested in them, other people run the other way. Those who know my staff know that I certainly don’t shy away from them, although it’s not all that I do So given all the things happening on both sides of the pond in US and the UK this week, I’m guessing there will be some political or topical songs written Should you write any, post a link here if you want. As always, when commenting on a song of this type, it’s probably better to talk about the song itself rather than just giving an opinion for or against whatever the issue is that the song addresses. And yes, I know some are not interested in this type of song-that’s OK too!

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 1

Ha.... “stuff” not staff. Would be a lot easier to have a staff writing them !

  • @cairobraga Feb 1

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 1

Glad someone is excited! 😀 One more thought- if you’ve written a political or topical song, tag it “political“ ( i’ve noticed in past years some people tag these type of songs “protest“ maybe use both terms so people can find them ? ) anyway happy 2020 FAWM- starting, I see, in about 25 minutes !

  • @pabrizzer Feb 1

it is what music (and art in general) is for imho

  • @spikedirection Feb 1

I've got one, I struggle with them not being lake and half witted though 😂

  • @cairobraga Feb 1

@mikeskliar so the very first song of this FAWM is a political one https://fawm.org/songs/100035/ by @vomvorton!!!!!!!!

  • @peterfedora  Feb 1

I have a long history of political songs... I have got threatened with being kicked out of a country once for performing political songs... my first song this year is not political, but there is one hot on its heals...

  • @vomvorton  Feb 1

@cairobraga indeed - the last two songs I wrote before FAWM were on a similar theme. Hoping I can put that theme to bed and write about something else for a while tbh but we shall see what happens!

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 1

just about to listen to yours now, @vomvorton ! and yes, my first song here , no surprise, is a political one 'goodbye rule of law' at https://fawm.org/songs/100052/

  • @spikedirection Feb 1

Here's mine. Rough acoustic sketch, but I'm into it.
    Hymn For A Depressed Liberal

  • @spikedirection Feb 1

And here's a link that works

  • @dasbinky  Feb 1

@mikeskliar If your first song HADN'T been a political song then I would have had to write an angry protest song about your softening political stance. 😉

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 1

    lol @dasbinky !!!!

  • @ustaknow Feb 1

Glad to see this here again. I was going to say, I don't know your Staff 😀 hahhh, -- I'maFan of typos Uno?! Anyway, I love the tag #topical (not tropical, but could be.)

Yes, the commenting on the song thing brings some interesting feedback, my favorits is, "yeah, I love the song but don't want to say so since can't tell which side you're on..." 😉 yeah, the answers, "blowing in the wind", on the back of "one tin soldier", riding away.
-- No one forgets the very artfully done ones, it's the grenades folks run from unless gets folks to buyUaBeer 😀 kinda thing.

  • @loveonamixtape  Feb 2

Oh, I definitely get political in my FAWM output -- especially during a big election year (here in the US) so...I suspect I'll be tagging in here a lot 😀

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 2

Here's a kind of humanistic song that's vaguely political, tho I'm not sure whether to tag it 'political' or not... https://fawm.org/songs/100731/

  • @calumcarlyle Feb 2

I’m not actually sure if the one I wrote is political or not to be honest!

  • @dasbinky  Feb 2

@calumcarlyle @mikeskliar The act of creation is in itself an inherently political act. So when in doubt, just call it political. 😉
    #powertothepeople #overthrowthebinky

  • @loveonamixtape  Feb 3

I managed to turn a song inspired by National Play Your Uke Day and Groundhog Day into a laughing-through-tears-is-my-favorite-emotion protest song against climate change and capitalism. Which is pretty indicative of where I'm at these days. https://fawm.org/songs/100922/

  • @gslade Feb 3

Both of my first songs would qualify.
    Song 1 - It's an anti-Theism Anthem
Song 2 - All about burning down the south

  • @karlsburg25  Feb 3

I working on one about tianamen square but am gonna wait tilll I back in studio to record it late feb . Not topical really but definitely political 😜

  • @konemake Feb 3

Most of my songs are political in some way. I will post links here when I get something online.

  • @cts  Feb 3

Very rarely do I write political songs. I plan on doing so this FAWM as part of listening to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On project. That being said, I think my leanings might be more of the social aspect of things, but I'm gonna do it nonetheless. @mikeskliar - this is where opportunity comes a-huntin' us down! 😀

  • @vegansongs  Feb 3

Most of mine will carry a political and or protest commentary as does my name.

  • @scottlake Feb 3

Here’s mine. Just watched Just Mercy with my wife this weekend. That movie and 13th inspired this song. https://fawm.org/songs/101040/

  • @gslade Feb 3

@scottlake >> Interesting we had the same influences. 13th is epic and I also just watched Just Mercy recently. I got this out of it.. https://fawm.org/songs/100526/

  • @wacha  Feb 3

I love a good political song, I have one but I need to get a demo up. I'll be sure to post it when I get the demo done.

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 4

i saw the title and thought bet it is Mike 😀
    I did this today

  • @mistermann Feb 4

I'm bending the rules just a little and sharing a link to the EP of gun violence songs I released just BEFORE FAWM as substitute, but only because it's relevant here and ALSO because I'll be spending most of February trying to produce my NEXT full-length political album.

Also - I am damn proud of myself for playing the activist when I sent it to all of my reps as a thank you for making the push to pass SEVEN new common-sense gun regulation bills in Virginia! Even after the assault-rifle jockeys shut down my city with what was effectively an armed occupation.

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 4

Here's one called 'Ms Inform' which is about QAnon. That's political, and only slightly more insane than the reality that is US politics these days...

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 4

just brought out the 12-string guitar to tune it up, and this kind of wrote itself (!)..... quick lo-fi recording https://fawm.org/songs/101660/

  • @tawalker Feb 4

In lyrical terms, I tend to write quite obliquely - it feels like a "cop-out" to say things "straight", and besides, I like a bit of "plausible deniability" if anyone gets upset at a position I have taken in song (or they *think* I have!).

If there's a theme or "concept" running through the songs I'm writing this FAWM (and it may change), it's "loss" - whether that be "actual" loss, a feeling of it, or elements of both. It is plausible that politics may or may not come into this... and perhaps I will leave it at that 😀

  • @spunky4455 Feb 4

I wrote this last night. It's political/topical but not angry. I'm working on an angry one for later.

  • @stephenwordsmith Feb 4

This one's political, in a non-partisan, evidence-based sort of way.

    Living Wage: https://fawm.org/songs/101728/

  • @mlv  Feb 4

    Political metaphor sea shanty ahoy!

  • @ustaknow Feb 6

Like many others have said, or explain..., aren't they really, all, -- political, topical, of current events.

I guess if one is writing Copy within a Jingle House for PSA's and Commercials, or Top-40 😀 it may not be. However today, possibly, it's a challenge to discern Bubble Gum from what some put out as the latest fire drill to hang someone "else" over 😉

I always like to cite/remind of Blowing in The Wind, and One Tin Soldier... effect does not need to be explained to occur, just sing it.

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 6

And here's a 'slightly political' new one of mine https://fawm.org/songs/102435/

  • @alyxanderjames  Feb 6

    Here’s my offering: XI - Justice https://fawm.org/songs/102287/

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 6

Anyone up for a song about the 'suicide' of a billionaire paedo with powerful friends? No one? https://fawm.org/songs/102451/

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 6

Another anger against government inaction on water from me. https://fawm.org/songs/102428/

  • @karan  Feb 7

We had a terrible election recently in one of the federal states of Germany. Fascism is on the rise again, not only here. It makes me angry, and determined to make a stand:

  • @paulhenry  Feb 7

Posted this, day before yesterday, after the US Senate put paid to its duplicity. https://fawm.org/songs/102182/

  • @paulhenry  Feb 7

hey, can I add someone else's? @mikedebenham has written this one: https://fawm.org/songs/100106/, "Change Your Mind." But while you're there, listen also to his "Lead Us To Water," also political, but more than that. A gem. https://fawm.org/songs/100598/

  • @wacha  Feb 8

I generally write a few, here is my first one:

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 10

    Climate change, anyone? https://fawm.org/songs/103676/

  • @scottlake Feb 10

New demo of mine about mass incarceration and the death penalty - added some Neil Young type electric gutiars, bass, and remixed. https://fawm.org/songs/101040/

  • @robynmackenzie  Feb 10

Did this one for a skirmish earlier: https://fawm.org/songs/103582/

  • @kevinemmrich  Feb 10

Just bemoaning the sorry state of affairs: https://fawm.org/songs/103521/

  • @kenficara Feb 10

Unusually, it took me seven songs to get to a political number: The Best Is Yet To Come (State of the Union). https://fawm.org/songs/103515/

  • @oddbod  Feb 10

just a general beef with politicians...

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 10

a bit political, tho it could be applied to other things too, perhaps

  • @bradbrubaker  Feb 11

Here's mine, a collab with @guatecoop called "All the Platitudes in the World Can't Save Me": https://fawm.org/songs/103335/

  • @jorh  Feb 11

Finally got my first semi-political song on the board, it’s a reflection of the times we seem to be living in

  • @jackketch Feb 11

I didn't intend my first song to be political but I wrote it on 'Brexit day' here in the UK and on reflection I think I was really writing about populism and people like Nigel Farage.. https://fawm.org/songs/100081/

  • @declan  Feb 11

A protest song about the Isle of Man Government

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 12

I gotta give @jonmeta a shout out here- for his excellent song 'the republic goes sailing away'- should be required listening!

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 12

and here's one of mine, a jazzy little jazz guitar and harmonica whispered affair called 'come home'

  • @fuzzy  Feb 12

@cts and I have posted a funny "political song".

I didn't mean for it to be political, but Trump's antics are so hilarious that I just had to use his speech in a tune.

  • @frenchcricket  Feb 13

Almost all of mine are political this year. I'd feel like I was failing in my duty as an artist (however pretentious that sounds) if I wasn't to address it.

Anyway this last one is about the (seemingly arbitrary) deportation of foreign nationals by the UK government

  • @stephenwordsmith Feb 13

Colonialism explored via a popular boardgame:

  • @scottlake Feb 17

Lyrics only right now for Trumpty Dumpty, https://fawm.org/songs/105955/

  • @johnstaples  Feb 17

I grew up with the most wonderful grandparents. They were rural Kentucky fundamentalist Christians. And while I did not then nor do not now adhere to their faith, I deeply respected their devotion to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

But today I am completely and totally disgusted by the many Christians who have embraced trump and his hate. trump is about as far away from Christ's teachings as one could possibly be. If I believed in such things, I'd say he is damn likely the anti-christ!

So this song is dedicated to the many Fake Christians. They better pray that hell's not real!

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 20

its been a while (a few days, ha) since i wrote anything political. this one probably isn't my finest, but it was kind of fun to do, on a tenor banjo, too

  • @mikeb Feb 21

This is a topical song, I think: https://fawm.org/songs/107038/ It's my week 3 challenge song.

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 21

and this new one '2020 baritone blues' is only vaguely political, but I guess enough that it qualifies, tho i havent tagged it as such

  • @billwhite51 Feb 21

After asking me if I was from the United States, the taxi driver asked, "When Will Your Country Free My Country?" I didnt understand what he meant until he repeated the question a few times and I realized he was from Venezuela. I started to answer but nothing ccme out of my mouth because I had no answer, I was stumped. The question was too complex. So I walked away without saying anything. But I couldnt shake the question. I wrote the song becase I still cannot answer it.

  • @ustaknow Feb 21

Ah, yes 😀 so, me a lover of empirical data, facts and etc., while do love a great hyperbolic conflation as much as anyone 😀 well, I had time, not writing SONG's so much today, or even IRL working 😉 :

Searched on "GOOGLE" 😀 and we know how unweighted that SE is:

    I searched many combinations of:

[ summary report of political base profiles sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, self identification ]

-- and then, just to make it interesting tagged "Trump" to the end

Of course, all in the interest of *new Song *prompts for EVERYONE, "christian" pending def., alternate life styles, Jews, Muslims, Tao-ists, et alia just for fun 😀 for this thread!

And again, did not get a single concise, nor abundant "archive" of,
    - a summary report that then, even, cited (and all hits show a cited by number; exists with the hit if there, and not many 😀 for those, and not vetted 😉 ) anyway back on point... ..., did not get a/any Summary Report of Political Bases as "Christian" or Gay, Muslim, Jewish, Taoism other, -- pending how one defines all of that.

There is a huge OPINION, HYPERBOLIC, ECHO CHAMBER of CONFLATION out there. But, no Summary Report of Political Bases as "Christian". 😀 hmmm, I wonder how many alternate life style, Gay, Lesbian, Muslim, Jewish, Tao-ists, Blacks, "Old White Men", and et alia are in that group?

I wonder the *reaction* if wrote about them alone, one by one, in the same manner "Christians" are addressed today so freely, by Heathen Non-Believers, and etcetera the Eternal Always Right folks? 😀 Now, are the always right folks, Right, or Left, I get confused since fully independent, libertarian, other-ism-ist? 😀 hahhh!

    Just real quick -

Found, *unrelated, lots of and from other places, UK: www equalityhumanrights com/sites/default/files/research-report-65-pathways-to-politics pdf

    Then clicked around this:
Images for summary report of political base profiles sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, self identification
    -- nothing, ideas?

  • @karlsburg25  Feb 21

This is my Chinese from 30 years ago political song if you like https://fawm.org/songs/107187/

  • @thetambourinepeople Feb 21

Just a perspective on things. Nothing more. https://fawm.org/songs/107221/

  • @lastnightilie Feb 22

"We Can't Let Them Win" my latest, doesn't really get into the details, but definitely political: https://fawm.org/songs/107285/

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 22

Is a song about climate change 'political'? not sure, but here's that song, played on a baritone resonator guitar https://fawm.org/songs/107328/

  • @karan  Feb 22

On Wednesday night, a racist killer murdered 10 people here in Germany. After being numb with shock for a day, I decided to write a song, not reflecting my despair, but confirming community and hope:

  • @ustaknow Feb 22

From a formerly instrumentation only track, from the Amen challenge, now lyricised 😉 Wow, #13 O M G, come for one 'n stay for many!

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 22

@karan did two songs about that horrible situation, both of the songs are wonderful (glad she posted English translations of the lyrics). Meanwhile, this may be low-hanging fruit, so to speak, but I couldn't resist... https://fawm.org/songs/107517/ and i gave it more production then usual for me, with dobro/resonator guitar and harmonica along with a 12-string guitar and vocals..

  • @mikeb Feb 23

This one is definitely topical: A Crazy World https://fawm.org/songs/107789/

  • @quork  Feb 24

This was inspired by The Book Thief, US recent history and @billwhite51’s powerful For Peace https://fawm.org/songs/102990/.

    It’s Too Late

  • @ustaknow Feb 24

    "Eye Want"

Wrote, direct into the FAWM add song form; and a Mourning-morning-news 5 min write right rite 😀 yeehaw! I love topical stuff! 😉 so much stuff to conflate.

  • @electrocelte Feb 24

Yes? No? Maybe ? Perhaps? Oh I don't know... https://fawm.org/songs/108010/

  • @hoppiern  Feb 24

Another song for the anti-Trump pile 😊 https://fawm.org/songs/105937/

  • @elesimo  Feb 24

If you're not familiar with Brazil's president, he's a worse version of Trump. @fulanin made an amazing song called CAGADA, a Portuguese word for "shit hits the fan": https://fawm.org/songs/107667/

  • @raygungirls Feb 25

I usually don't get overtly political. This white supremacy thing, though, it gets me really riled up. So, used some Punk/Hardcore to sing about it (that's what Punk was meant for right?).

  • @billwhite51 Feb 25

this is a hrd ass political song disguised as a tender love song, i didnt tag it political because i didnt want to scare anybody away, because it does work as a love song for those who like it like that. https://fawm.org/songs/108371/
I Wonder If I Could Love You Again

  • @ustaknow Feb 25

Ah, yes, "Oh, Where's the Beef?" (lots of family over there watching with great interest, -- wow, they know how to throw a party with trimmings!:

  • @fulanin Feb 25

@elesimo thanks for tagging me and my song 😀

  • @stephenwordsmith Feb 25

There's nothing more political than a national anthem, and @metalfoot and I have come together to write the great official song of New Zanada, telling the tale of the the victory of the mighty Kiwoose over our fierce and bitter rival, the Baldaroo.

  • @doglatin  Feb 26

My latest was, as I mentioned in the liner notes, partially nudged by the current presidential race here in the US. I avoid specifics, but I was sort of channeling a particular candidate, as they plod through the season of primaries.

  • @johnstaples  Feb 26

I fully understand this thread. And I've added my political song.

But every time I see this thread in the forum I think "Tropical song??"! 😁

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 27

quick little throwaway of a song, tho I stand by the one-line lyric.
    'vote blue no matter who'

  • @billwhite51 Feb 27

@mikeskliar giving that message to the DNC during the primaries is handing them a mandate to load someone like bloomberg up with superdelegates so h gets the nominatio instead of the candidate with the popular vote,,and we are rewarded with four more years of trump. the partys obligation is to the constituency..not the other way around.

  • @calumcarlyle Feb 27

Well, i have just uploaded a lyrics only political song, for which i hope someone will provide a "surprise" collab!

by the way @mikeskliar that might be an example of the US and Britain being separated by a common language. After all, voting blue in Great Britain means voting Conservative...!

  • @gslade Feb 27

I think @captainvulpine! and I solved all of your political problems in a few minutes of mastication and mayhem. Enjoy, "Eat the Rich" https://fawm.org/songs/108874/

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 27

so, not really (hopefully the subject isn't as well) "political" but certainly "topical" (i.e. - in the news) here's a cheerful (or not) little thing about the corona virus... https://fawm.org/songs/109175/

  • @boxtape Feb 28

This is a track I wrote about Brexit, the first couple of lines were the only parts of this track I had before FAWM and they popped into my head the morning of the election result when the tories won by a landslide. - https://fawm.org/songs/105003/

  • @ustaknow Feb 28

    "East Agent, Now West"

  • @ustaknow Feb 28

Combining a 1 min write with a 5090-2018 track - well, if we're gonna conflate things, lets conflate 😀

So, from "Quarantine" to "Oh My Josephine"

  • @vivalarayna Feb 29

And she's finally on the boards!! Been a rough month and I finally started writing last weekend. There will be just a few political tunes. 😉 Here's one to start:

  • @vivalarayna Feb 29

And another one. There is STILL too much talk over here in the States that "a woman can't be president" despite a woman winning the popular vote in the last election. It's more that mindset than the quality of candidates that keeps OWDs in the WH:

  • @ustaknow Feb 29

"OWM Again, Not Om - what to do with you (reprise)"

  • @man Feb 29

    There's a Process

I usually avoid politics in my music, but a skirmish prompt got me thinking about the ongoing US Democratic primaries. tbh, I probably won't do anything with this one after FAWM.

  • @calumcarlyle Feb 29

Oh yeah, i did another political one today, it didn't feel particularly cathartic though!

  • @vivalarayna Mar 1

Some still need demos, but I managed to finish most of the pieces I'd been working on. Pretty happy with them. Each pushed me in a different direction:

  • @calumcarlyle Mar 1

Well, my fourteenth was another political one, thanks for this thread @mikeskliar i didn’t expect to write so many political ones this fawm!

  • @mikeskliar  Mar 1

thanks @calumcarlyle -- and thanks to everyone here who made this quite a FAWM! These are some strange times we're all living in, in many parts of the world, and its interesting that so many people wrote 'political' songs this year, I think probably somewhat more then most previous years. Perhaps some of this uptick is due to the 'perfect storm' of, happening right now, the brexit stuff in the UK, the crazy US stuff with our divisive orange disaster (everyone's got their fave name, that's mine), and lots of push-pull in Brazil, Australia, and other places.

  • @mikeskliar  Mar 1

and ps, thanks to everyone who contributed , and thanks to the community at large , .. from what I saw, there were lots of comments and listens, and support, and very little of the rancor, personal attacks, etc that sometimes doom online political-themed talk.

  • @ustaknow Mar 1

👏👏👏 - yes, one day Americans may even speak directly civilly to folks they don't agree with which built this country as in the past: Japan, Germany, Russia, American Indians (well, that's still in deliberation possibly), Spain, France, Canada (Royal Mounties kept Americans outta their space 😉 )..., et alia... but not "Americans" 😉 (today). I won't get into the other coutries here like GB, DE, RU ... etcetera.

    So, yah 👏👏👏
