Influences: Musical tastes all over the map - old REM, Beatles, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Frente, Throwing Muses, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Cocteau Twins, The Sundays, Echo and the Bunnymen, Regina Spektor, Velvet Underground, The Cure, Devo, Bob Mould, Indigo Girls, Laurie Anderson, King Crimson, Rush, Yes, Chicago, Kate Bush, Joy Division, Led Zep, The Jam, John Wesley Harding, Peter Mulvey, Martin Sexton, Suzanne Vega, Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson... there are a lot of musical styles in my head mixing around.
I've been home-recording music for many years and am currently in a band playing original music (http://www.treadingbleu.com) with the wonderful @Kovbleu, my super-talented brother @guatecoop and amazing guitarist @slawbleu. I love writing/recording solo music as ZeCoop too, because my styles are all over the place.
Also check out my dad's and son's pages! @srcoops writes a ton of lyrics and we've collaborated on a lot of songs. He's very open to people using his lyrics, and had lots of collaborations last year, so let him know if you'd like to use them!! @MooseCoops has an amazing voice and love of music. He's collaborated with me too, notably on 2018's "My Grandpa", which had five different Coops on it! 😀
Oh, and I run this thing on FAWM called the 4-Track Challenge, where people mail cassettes to each other and add one track at a time. Sound fun? It is!! Let me know if you want in and check out the songs at @fourtracktape
I do a lot of instrumental music, since I don't write lyrics, so if you have an idea, let me know. I can't guarantee a collaboration will work out, but I usually do a lot of collaborating. I do collaborations as a co-writing project and consider them complete when I find the one that fits. I've had multiple versions of songs from various people, during FAWM, but the one that I end up posting is the official song, in my mind. I'm always finding amazing new people on FAWM!
I may have figured out MIDI this year, but most of the time, what you are hearing is me actually playing the instruments, including live drums. I write songs part by part and never quite know where they are headed, and very often get very deep in layers and atmospheres. I love painting with sound.
This is my 9th FAWM. It's always wonderful and something I look forward to. It's the best part of Winter! (...the only good part of winter?) 😉
All of my recordings, FAWM and otherwise, are on my bandcamp page
2012 (Computer died and only did simple parts)
***Please come connect with me online!!!
** Any and all feedback is welcomed! ***
(I just may not listen to it, lol...)
**Just for the record... I very rarely mark songs as favorites... They are ALL my favorites. Sometimes my collaborators do, though.
Oh wow, that would be amazing! 😃
First I wing it and then build around what I coughed up 😀
I’m always swimming in the stream of conciousness 🏊♀️
Thanks for your comments on Lessons Learned and Winter Light Festival! I'm hoping the Willamette Light Brigade did not take too bad a hit this year due to cold/rain/snow, as I want the festival to continue! It's a beautiful break to the early darkness of Portland in winter!
Thank you so much for the lovely comment on Bosses song <3
Thanks for the comments. Digging your tracks, both instrumentals and collaborations. Some lovely sonic journeys. Looking forward to hearing what you come up with for this second half of the month.
I have seen your name and icon all over this site. Your enthusiasm is just contagious. You have been caught being an awesome person. Please keep it going.
LOL, I always try to save your stuff for last, cause it's always guaranteed to be great work and I prefer ending on high notes. I'ma listen to it all. Don't you fret, Monsieur Marius
I've been updating the cassettes listings doc with who's done what so it's easier to follow than the thread. Things are moving along!
Yeeeeee! I'm so glad you liked my HUMMUS song despite my pronunciation of the word being wrong the entire time! (Should be like HAHM-mooce) anyway, I'm about to dig into your tunes, try and stop me
I couldn't stop thinking about reverse guitar solos, so I've had a go at one! Trust me, it definitely sounds better backwards than it did forwards. I actually did it 'live' with the effect playing it backwards as I played it forwards, which was very strange...
Dear zecoop, thank you so much for all your kind and supportive comments. You really made my day!! About the sampled drums loops, that all arose out of weekly composition challenge I with an online music group called LINES. Here is the week for last week's challenge:
It's a very interesting group, and although I often feel out of my depth, I've never had anything but encouragement and support from the people there. Feel free to check it out!!
Fantastic! Swirly rock organ also works for me! 😁
Oh, and in other news, me 'n yer old man are getting to work on a collab! Yay!
Awesome! Where I might start is with the fact that my Tele and Gretsch haven't seen much action yet this month. I need some TWANG in my life... 😉
Well when I said I didn't shower all weekend, I definitely meant ALL weekend. LOL. (now somebody is going to read your soundboard and wonder what in the bloody hell we're talking about LOL....fawm, right?)
Thanks for commenting on "Shirtless"-- that actually did make me feel better. LOL. Now to catch up on your tunes!
Haha that's ok any solo reversed sounds awesome! I think I might do that myself!
Haven't tested the Tapetronic, I have had MTron, IK Multimedia Sampletron. Been using RedTron for a while, sounds good and very little CPU use. But must be an exciting new world for you working with a DAW with midi capabilities. A gazillion VSTi's out there, and surprisingly many really good free ones.
Oh do a reverse guitar solo!
Well now... Maybe your dance card is already full, but might you be up for working a collab in the second half of the month...?
Right on man
I'm busier this year than FAWMs past, but still happy to give a collab a shot if you have an idea to send my way!
Did my Madison postcard arrive safely in Mrs. ZeCoop's classroom btw?
Awesome I have to go with Tomo to do some bureaucratic tax stuff and not sure if I’ll have time before that but if not I’ll listen to the stuff you sent later today 😀
Thank you for your comments! I am so BEHIND with everything this year but trying to take some time to come do some listening today!
That sounds awesome. Thanks for the address.
Thanks so much. Where do I send the postcard again? Need to catch up on my listening but death by paper cut is a killer title.
They were in the kitchen the whole time... 😉
Aw, thanks again zecoop, I think I was just lucky with my last one, I still don't know how it came together like that. What's that saying. . ."music works in mysterious ways?" Or something like that 😉 I'm going to pass out now!
Thanks for listening and commenting on my song "You Are Fragile", I really appreciate it!!
Thank you so much for the kind note on my soundboard! I will absolutely be checking out some PJ Harvey. 😀
Are you entering the riff contest?
I'll be able to sleep for the first time in days...
Oh good! I couldn't sleep for worrying that you were lollygagging! 😉
Yes, you do a great job with Ebow! But I have to agree, it's not the same thing. Jimmy Page lol, exactly 😁
I really hope you'll find a way to use that actual bow. Please let me know when you get here, I absolutely want to listen!
And where are the rest of your songs!? 😉
I've been meaning to ask whether the postcard from Pontefract Castle has arrived yet...
Postcard on its way from Amsterdam to Michigan on Monday! 😉
Hey there! Thank you sooo much for the warm welcome back, zecoop! After wrestling a little bit of anxiety I'm always happy to be here! And thanks for your comments on "Cling!" Gosh, wish I was cool enough to be Nico or any member of the Velvet Underground, haha.
Thank you for your lovely comments. 😀
Of course you were not trolling for comments, I know! You've posted your note at the moment I was doing my listening/commenting (realizing we're already in week 2, and that I still haven't given a single listen to too many good friends. Aaaargh!)
As you know, it's always a pleasure to listen to your songs. 😉
Re the violining guitar : You know what, I'm a fraud lol. I don't play it with a bow ; it's just a custom effect on a Zoom pedal (with slow attack, a bit of distortion, and I can't remember what else). And I use the whammy bar *a lot* with that sound.
I knew a guy who had transformed a guitar into a custom instrument played with a bow, but I can't remember what changes he had done to it. But I think he used wide, heavy sound effects (the kind of effects that go wild as soon as you brush your strings).
Received! Thanks! I'll make sure to shout you out when it's finished (on top of adding the tag)
You're sweet, thank you. 😀
Me, it's the same thing every year : I'm drawn in the FAWM vortex in no time, always behind with listening and commenting. Thanks for reminding me it was about time that I checked your songs. 😀
Woo! Thanks a million dude I'm super excited
Oh you're right! One of them definitely sounds dry, though I think I hear pretty thick reverb on the other two.
And honestly I haven't decided which one! I'll take all three if it's not too much of a hassle - might end up using pieces of all of them. I'm planning on warping the ever loving bajesus out of them so their original tempo isn't so much a concern of mine haha, I just want to capitalize on some of the cool moments that would be tough to reproduce with samples (like the tom fills). If sending all three isn't feasible, just from a cursory listen I think my favorite is this one (http://files.fawmers.org/FAWM_2019/ze...), but I'd love to get those toms without the reverb.
And no need to send me individual mics I think I'd get overwhelmed.
Thanks for the comment Ze - played this song to my songwriting group last night and 'Victor' was the surprise hit of the night.
Not bad for a bit designed to cover the fact that I was 2 syllables short and decided to draw attention to it - rather than hide it!!!!
Good to see you too Ze!
I would be keen for another rap! 😁
Oh HIIIIIIIIIIIIIII 😉
Email with mp3 launched in your direction.
Hey mate, I'm glad you're still fawming strong, I wasn't going to join in at all this year as I'm learning to be a parent but I'm going for a lyrics only year again so that I can still join in. I'll check the updated version and enjoy your Feb and I look forward to hearing the rest of your output this year
Haha, I loved your "Fallout" review 😀
Ha! Yeah. I thought the last line was funny. Okay, now it sounds like I need a lot.
Thanks for the comment on 24 Hours to Midnight, will check out the creepier subway later!
I used your drums!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I wrote a punk song. Kinda.
Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! <3
Hey Zecoop, thanks for the comment on my song I appreciate it.
Thanks for visiting “My Dad". And like I suspected, as soon as I got that one up I got a chorus idea for the song you sent me!
Sent you a quick question via The Facebook (aka Big Brother). 😀
Hahaha, don't worry, I got the chords!
Intro: C note (I played Cm Bb Ab on the guitar)
Verse: Cm Bb Ab x4
Chorus: Bb Ab x4
Bridge?: C Fm
Outro: C note
Like I said, it's a good challenge not having the chords.
Hey man, thanks for the follow. I hope you're not disappointed - my style varies but it won't include guitar so it's unlikely to remind you too much of Joe or Elvis I'm afraid.
I love them both as writers. If there's a better song than Fools In Love, I've yet to hear it.
Thanks so much. I also got the clock feeling which inspired the lyrics. 😀
Our Tascamm has a mysterious noise we can't figure out 😞 Going to try to clean the heads on it and see if that works, but if not, might have to pass on the cassette challenge this year. Boo hoo 😞
Thank you for listening to my German song and even putting in the effort of translating it. I put the google translation into my lyric notes, cause they are actually pretty good!
Dude, you are one of the people I look forward to hearing each year.
Hey thanks for the good words. The Geddy bass is the best. I am thinking of putting some of those pickups in my old American Standard Jazz. I bought an older Warwick streamer this year also-a Jazzman-has a music man humbucker and a slanted J pickup. It also sounds really growly and gritty.
Thanks so much Coop!!!!!!!!! 😀
I wish I could remember exactly what my Traynor bass amp looked like, but definitely a similar design, the cabinet was 2x12 one over the other. No pictures from back then in the 70s. I used it for guitar in my high school band, then for bass in my post-high school summer band before trading up to a Fender Bandmaster (68 head, 69 cabinet) that I finally sold off about 10 years ago.
Thanks, and you too, looking forward to hearing what you come up with!
Hey man...thanks for all the terrific comments during last years FAWM...wishing you a fortunate muse for the next 28 days!
Success! Nice faces cover. It's my 9th fawm as well. And I agree with your statement about winter...
Hope FAWM makes you forget how cold it is where you live 😀
Ahhh!!! I didn't know about my challenges because you tagged me as Stephen with a PH instead of Steven with a V. 😀
Oh god, it’s almost time. 😬
Hello amped here we are Again!
Thanks for including me on the 4 tracks...
Can’t wIt to hear your amazing wirk
Hello and you too, happy fawm!
Track 3 doesn't work apparently but he's willing to let me sneak into his mancave and record, so if you want to put me down for not-track-3 on some tape or another (maybe even at the tail end of a cassette, to record over track 4 or something?) I can probably do the 4-track thing!
Happy FAWM! 😀
Here and happy to be reuniting with my fawmily 😀 Happy Fawming!
Hi! thanks man! I hope your'e gonna like it 😉 . Have fun, it's so soon!!
Hey there ZeCoop! Just spent some time diggin' through your back catalog and loving the energy and the vibe a lot !! I haven't been around much this past decade, so the fault is not yours - I've been too busy grinding away at it, trying to claw my way up the ladder (and out of the gutters) of the entertainment industry. LOL Looking forward to hearing your stuff this year. And yeah, if I hear something that I feel I can add to (and do it proper justice), I'll be sure to let you know. I've never been much of a collab guy but I'm trying to change that this year. Have a killer FAWM !!
Fantastic! I look forward to anything you've played on.
I would love to do a tape. Let me just confirm that it's still up and running since we haven't used it in a few months, and definitely not since we've moved. I'll get back to you ASAP.
hi ze.. thank you and same here, mister 🙏🏻
My time commitments to FAWM keep getting shorter, but I don't think I could stay away from the creativity. Looking forward to more from zecoop & friends in 2019.
I might put a ukulele in her hands hit record and see what she comes up with 😝 Hope you are well and had a good 2018.
Yep, I have been busy setting up a little space for music so I will be joining you
Happy FAWM 2019. It's gonna be another great one.
Am back 😁 x
Good to see you again too
Hello to you! I’m here, though not sure to what extent. You can be certain I’ll be listening to your music!
Hello! Looking forward to hearing new music from you!
Can't wait to hear your new stuff!
Woohoo -- getting excited/nervous! Construction will hopefully be completed on the basement (for now) in time for me to get everything set up!
thanks, great to see ya back!!!!
