Artist Bio

Influences:   I'm a child of the 70s and heard what would become the giants of R&B, C&W, Motown, Rock. I grew up in the 80s and was introduced to Coltrane, Miles, Brubeck, et al, as well as the 2nd British invasion sprinkled with funk to keep it real. In the 90s I loved grunge, DMB, pop, EDM/shoegaze and continued my love affair with country music as it evolved. In the 2000s I began listening to folk, new folk, bluegrass and indie music. I guess that's kinda vague but better than, "I like all music." :D

Hi everyone! Really excited to be here.

I've been playing guitar and writing songs since about 2005 but that was well before I started my shapeshifting, which is rather recent (I’m a transfemme enby) . With that in mind, I'm trying to figure out how that affects my songwriting as well as singing and performing.

But I've also been in a creative drought. I really want to get my musical side moving again... you know, get my voice back? I've just... I've been stuck for a while and unable to... I don't know, do what used to come relatively easily.

So here I am. And in just two weeks I already feel a spark. Hopefully Looking forward to getting even one song posted.

Thanks SO much for your comment on already leaving!

  • @jeustan  Mar 7

Wren, no worries! I have definitely been there. I look forward to future FAWMS and songs with you!

  • @cleanshoes  Mar 6

Thank you so much for your beautiful comment on Boys Will Be Boys. It's truly appreciated!

  • @alyxanderjames  Mar 5

Wren, I'm so glad you joined FAWM this year! It's been an unmitigated delight sharing this virtual space with you, and I'm thrilled to see where your musical journey takes you from here. Thank you for the thoughtful comments on my songs, and for your bravery in reaching out and in posting your own songs!

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Mar 5

🀣 No problem! Glad you found this place too, it really is a great community and an ultra talented pool of people every year that just keeps growing. I think everyone will always be their own worse critic when it comes to their voice especially. I personally don't like singing, and only ever even did in the first place because nobody would ever sing any of my stupidly ludicrous songs(which end up being the ones I love). If performing and just not recording I don't mind it so much because I don't have to listen to it later. So may be no help to you, but I've been recording stuff for the majority of my life, but still have hangups about it myself 🀣 Thinking about it out of my 50+ fawm tunes this year I think maybe one or two of them I'm not just screaming through a bunch of overdrive, or using some kind of modulation.

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Mar 1

You may of already been told or seen talk of it, but you don't always have to wait until next year πŸ˜‰ While fawm is busier with more people participating/etc. 50/90 is a 3 month long one that takes place starting July4, run by the same fine folks and a lot of the same people taking part. Last year was my first one and I quite enjoyed it as well. A little more laid-back since not as much rush to finish, but still a great place http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/

  • @fecknom  Mar 1

Thanks for your comment on my leopard chant! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. We have the same feeling about it - I have dreams of turning it into a whole choral, 4-part hymn. I'll let you know how that goes. <3

  • @celineellis  Feb 26

Thanks so much for your comment on my β€˜anthem’ song. It really means the world to me that people are relating to it and can hear themselves singing along.

  • @oheyitslauren Feb 26

I've been wanting to say thank you so much for your notes on my page/songs. I am an instant fan of you and your tunes - and based on your liner notes it seems like you can relate to fumbling through first attempts at recording... that's been the trickiest and most time-consuming part for me in most cases!! So yeah, good to know I'm not alone, haha. But regardless you sound crisp and clear and beautiful... The Ukulele song is truly brilliant, and stuck in my head still... Please keep writing and sharing!! πŸ˜€ PS hope you're holding up okay despite the absurd circumstances in Texas!!

  • @jeustan  Feb 23

Oh, damn, you're in Texas?! I hope you're coping with the freeze and shenanigans ok.

With under a week left, I'm still down for Dingus Inc. I'm hit or miss these days with lyrics. Once I get going I'm usually able to get to the finish line but I'm mostly blanking out and just doing what I can with instruments and other peoples' lyrics. Let me know if you have time for it and no worries if not!

  • @gardeningangel1  Feb 22

Hi Wren, thank you for your wonderful comments! "The Fates Deal" was an intense song to write since it tackled some all-too-common situations that so many of us have been in. I'm glad you survived those scary moments!
About using an app for drums, I say that still took skill and finesse, so it totally counts. All my drum tracks this year and last have been MIDI, in some ways it's easier and in some ways it's harder than playing a real kit. Use whatever tools you've got. Even the greatest artists still need a ruler to draw a straight line πŸ˜€

  • @jennakole  Feb 22

To double the vocal with the impact I’m hearing would mean to sing it again on another track and mix them at roughly the same level. The subtle differences in delivery add some texture to the vocal and a little eeriness as well.

Just a thought πŸ˜€ coming from someone who only does one take voice memo recordings! Ha.

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Feb 22

About that drum track 🀣 However the sausage gets made as long as its tasty I don't mind

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Feb 22

Absolutely no worries. I've been worried about everybody just down South from myself. Glad you're ok!! The climate here is similar, just not as stable so we're always a little more prepared for the ice storms we get one or two a year on top of all the muggy heat in those long god awful summers 🀣

  • @falconbridge Feb 16

Thank you so much for your kind comments on The Fuller's Lye! <3

  • @gm7  Feb 14

    My pleasure.

  • @celineellis  Feb 13

Thanks so much for your kind words - i will take indigo girls comparisons all day long!

  • @heid Feb 11

Hi Wren! Thank you for all your kind comments on my stuff, too.
I totally get that, it can feel really weird making music and being queer and hearing yourself. Really just making anything in the face of feeling like this is an excellent achievement, you can be proud of however many you make. (When I'm feeling dysphoric about my voice I try to imagine it as an instrument that I can play rather than an expression of who i am but it's still hard I know.)
But yeah for sure, I really did feel your song. The instrumental on your second one is beautiful also! Rooting for you πŸ˜€

  • @miga  Feb 5

@wrenarcher thanks for the long comment - I don't mind a bit! Always fascinated by songwriting process and glad to hear how it worked for you. I think only once have I written lyrics and then found a melody for it. Seems like lyrics and melody need to come together, and if they don't, the song doesn't happes. So I was curious if that was how it worked for you. I did get to hear a little of your first demo before you took it down. (I feel ya. I still cringe at the sound of my own voice...our own worst critics indeed!) Hope to listen to your latest very soon!

  • @sciren  Feb 5

Thank you SO much for your positive feedback on our Oracle track! It's so exciting to see so many FAWMlings this year! Hope you've been having fun, and glad to hear you're feeling a spark! Isn't it the best? <3

  • @andygetch  Feb 5

Thanks for the note, hang in there and I can relate to the recording interruptions. Even though my wife generally respects that when I close the door I am recording, still there are occasional noises from inside and outside the house. Oh well πŸ˜€

  • @jrr1  Feb 5

@wrenarcher Thanks so much πŸ˜€ Some of my friends do triathlons, they have tried to talk me into doing one, which scares me more than the cold water! Well done on doing them. I would love to hear a demo of your first song, love the ukulele idea.

  • @akokulit Feb 5

Thanks for stopping by. 😁 You caught me though. I definitely got heavy influence from Gabe Bondoc lol

  • @elesimo  Feb 4

Thank you for your comment on my song "The bird song", I felt bad writing those lines so I'm glad people enjoyed the humor! πŸ˜€

    Have a fantastic FAWM!

  • @ablaze Feb 4

Dear Wren, I can’t believe how much support you’ve shown me!! Absolutely amazing you have no idea you happy it’s made me. Thank you so so much ❀️

  • @alyxanderjames  Feb 3

Ha, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with my chorus stuck in my head today. πŸ˜‰ I think I'm probably doing myself a disservice to some degree by just posting these phone recordings (my FAWM practice is generally to get up and write/record before I start work for the day, and I live in an apartment and am always paranoid that I'll annoy the neighbors if I'm too loud too early in the morning), but FAWM is more about generating material for me, and then I can go back and make nicer recordings of the keepers later. 😁 Anyway, thank you for the comment, it made me smile a lot. 😁

  • @ablaze Feb 1

Wow! Your comment on my first song made my day, thank you so much for taking the time to really listen to it and to write all your feelings! Incredibly sweet thank you so so so much. Im glad you liked it and thank you for recommending it as wel!
I'm excited to hear what you're gonna make πŸ˜€

  • @jorh  Jan 31

Yey for legitness! Have a good one πŸ˜€

  • @mctown Jan 31

Thanks for reply... jump on in.. it's fun....lot of good people having fun here...

  • @jorh  Jan 30

Just checked out your cover on soundcloud! You sound GREAT - no need for nerves at all! Looking forward to hearing your originals this FAWM πŸ˜€

  • @mctown Jan 30

    Nice song on soundcloud...

  • @nancyrost  Jan 30

Thanks for your kind words about my kitties. <3

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Jan 30

Read your pre-fawm butterflies post and was coming to add you to my watchlist to up some more nerves, but I already had 😁

  • @gardeningangel1  Jan 29

Hi and welcome to FAWM! Really enjoying your cover of Angel From Montgomery, very nicely done. Looking forward to hearing what you create... and your wit on the forums is much appreciated πŸ˜‰Happy FAWMing!

  • @frenchcricket Jan 28

Hi there! Glad to see you joining us and i hope you have a really fun, productive February! x

  • @dzdandcunfsd  Jan 28

    🀣🀣

Insurrection?!!?!?!? You mean those fine upstanding patriotic Americans that were just asking questions about the election???? hahahahahah

My favorite was BLM and Antifa actors, just stirring up more trouble 🀣

  • @jeustan  Jan 28

If you want to collab on some funk music, I funk with bass and stuff. No pressure at all but collabs can be fun. HAPPY FAWM weeee

  • @jeustan  Jan 27

Juice, I guess. Heh, it was a nickname for the first 3 letters of my name, Justin.

Hahaha, you're so right! Tryptophan Gang is a shoegave vibe. Haha, excited to relax to some turkey/food coma inducing jams.

  • @celaphane  Jan 27

    Hello and welcome!
Thank you so much for your kind words on my soundboard. Here's hoping we can both navigate our ways to an oasis of creativity. I remember my first FAWM fondly. It's what brought me back all these years later. The possibilities are endless here. I can't wait to hear what you create!

  • @toms  Jan 27

    Work ruins everything! πŸ˜€

  • @petemurphy  Jan 27

Ah, yes! The ever elusive 'add extra hours to the day' button. I think every FAWMer would love one of those πŸ˜€

I've been around here for 10 years, and I think the most important thing is to just do what you can and have fun with it. If you like the pressure and the race to the finish line, that's great! If you like to take a steady pace and not put too much pressure on yourself, that's great too! There isn't much in the way of rules here, other than 'be nice'.

And it doesn't matter if you write one song or 100 songs, you will be spending an entire month hanging out with the most supportive community I've found on the internet.

  • @mikeskliar  Jan 27

    welcome to fawm!

  • @petemurphy  Jan 27

Hi Wren, welcome to FAWM. I hope you have a blast. I see that you've been in a creative drought. FAWM definitely helped me with that when I first joined back in 2012.
    Have fun!

Oh, and it's great to see someone mentioning Coltrane and Miles.

  • @jeustan  Jan 27

    Heyo! Welcome! Happy FAWM!

  • @toms  Jan 27

As another child of the 70s (well, OK, born in the 60s, but the 70s are mostly what I remember), I will say that nothing will turn a creative drought into a creative deluge better or quicker than FAWM. Happy FAWMing! πŸ˜€

  • @jamkar  Jan 27

    Happy FAWM!

  • @bitshred  Jan 26

Welcome to FAWM! You'll have fun. πŸ˜€

  • @miga  Jan 23

@wrenarcher thanks for the welcome! I have too many lyric ideas and not enough music. And I can't apply the seat of my pants to the chair when it comes to the music. Argh. But it's fun to write silly stuff too and I think the effort is worth it, even if you discover there isn't a lot to say! Best wishes to you!

  • @laotranati Jan 22

Hi! Thanks for posting on my soundboard. I also have no idea how I'm going to use the MK2, so far I've only played with it for a little bit, and I didn't even record with it, so we'll see what happens!

  • @skibum1066  Jan 22

Thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to hearing some of your new songs!

  • @pumpkinhead Jan 21

Welcome! This year is gonna be awesome with so much exciting new people here. I just can't wait.

Welcome, friend! So glad you found us!

  • @alyxanderjames  Jan 15

Welcome to FAWM! I know it can be intimidating, but I promise this is the most supportive, enthusiastic community you could have landed in. πŸ˜€

Thanks for the welcome! πŸ˜€ excited to hear your content

  • @cairobraga  Jan 15

  • @cairobraga  Jan 15

hey sweetie! thanks for your AMAZING message on my soundboard. and yay for ending droughts! to paraphrase one Stefani Germanotta "I'd rather be wet but at least FAWM is near so rain on me, goddamnit!!!" excited to experience your creations next month. kisses from Portugal!

  • @mariekevinkmusic  Jan 14

Thank you! Such kind words. I look forward to hearing your music. Welcome to FAWM. It is like Hotel California: You can never leave πŸ˜€

  • @andygetch  Jan 12

You are quite welcome. The welcoming nature of this community is one of the big reasons why I keep coming back! Plus for me songwriting is a joy, an escape, and it's fun. FAWM is one of the best places I have found to write and get positive support for my songs πŸ˜€

  • @ianuarius  Jan 11

What up! Hope you have fun this fawm. Just make that your priority and you'll be surprised!

  • @guatecoop  Jan 11

Hey there! I appreciate your contributions to the forums. So, as far as hiss and noise, I have a solution to that...I use goldwave, which can be free, and put the wav file into it. Once I do that, I highlight and copy the portion just before the music starts , which will be the noise. From there, I go to effects and noise reduction and use the drop down menu to select β€œclipboard β€œ. It will then filter out all of that type of noise on the whole track. I can help more if my explanation isn’t helpful. Cheers!

  • @andygetch  Jan 11

Hello and welcome to FAWM! I see you are already asking questions on the forums. There is a lot of simple acoustic singer/songwriter stuff going on here and I look forward to hearing what you come up with.

  • @elesimo  Jan 11

Welcome to FAWM! I hope you have a great time! πŸ˜€

  • @judypie  Jan 10

Hey Wren! You’re in the right place πŸ˜€

  • @metalfoot  Jan 10

Welcome to FAWM! Hope it is a great experience for you. πŸ˜€

  • @fuzzy  Jan 10

    Welcome to FAWM!!
Even if you only post one song, that's one more song you've written than you have now!!
(Yeah, awkward sentence there, I know)

  • @tseaver  Jan 9

    Welcome, and happy FAWMing!

  • @emkaydeebee  Jan 8

You’ll be grand! Just be you πŸ‘ and use fawm for whatever you need to get from it...

  • @emkaydeebee  Jan 6

Hi! Welcome to FAWM! Glad just being here is already having an effect! Creativity tends to spur on creativity, if that makes sense, so this is the perfect place to just start writing and see what comes of it! There’s no expectation of perfect, finished pieces, though some do produce those of course, and it’s a really friendly place for feedback!

  • @johnstaples  Jan 6

Hey there! Welcome to FAWM! Hope you have a wonderful month and write a bunch of new songs! This will be my 9th FAWM and it has become my favorite time of the year!!

  • @guatecoop  Jan 4

Welcome to fawm! This is a great place to get your songwriting back. There are many friendly and supportive people here! Head to the forums and say hello....best wishes to you!
