Artist Bio

Influences:   Lots: Gilbert and Sullivan. Tin Pan Alley. Pete Seeger and folk music in general. "Old-timey," mountain music. Top 40 Radio, especially of the 1960s and 1970s. Stan Freberg, Homer and Jethro, Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman Weird Al Yankovic and other artists you'd be likely to hear on Dr. Demento. Country and/or western. Classical from Renaissance to early modern. Filk. The blues. Jazz. Or, as I tell people in workshops and the like, if it goes in here (points to his ears), sooner or later it's likely to come out here (points to his mouth, then wiggles his fingers). Oh yeah, and special mention to Arlo Guthrie, especially "Alice's Restaurant," for reasons I'll happily explain if we ever meet in person.

Been reading music almost as long as I've been reading English. Grew up playing the recorder, took up the banjo in adulthood and progressed into filk (science fiction folk) music. Won the song writing contest 2 1/2 times at Conflikt (a Seattle-area filk convention); that and $6 will get you a latte at Starbucks.

I especially like taking familiar words or phrases and looking at them from a different angle. Example: using the phrase "Freedom isn't free" in the context of a breakup song instead of a political mantra.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments on "Waltzing With Sorrow". I really did meet my ex that way, with him sitting one table closer to mine each day until he was sitting next to me. I will be revisiting my songs and appreciate each and every comment as I develop them, so your input is truly appreciated, tuneslayer!

(I will die! I will die... but some other day)

  • @spazsquatch Feb 16

I certainly wouldn't go bragging about Canadian politics, I just like a big place for friendly neighbours to hang out.

I'll take a stab at those lyrics sometime in the next 12 days. Wow, it goes by fast.

  • @rbmarty000  Feb 15

Hey there Tune Slayer.. I hope you like our latest collab.. Koala Cay.. Thanks so much..

  • @spazsquatch Feb 15

    Oh brother, I hear you.

While we are at it, let's put a nice porch swing from Olympia to Oshkosh. We'll throw the beers over on this side to keep them cool, if you can handle the BBQ. 😉

Any objections to my grabbing those Murder Hornet lyrics? I'm feeling a 50's sci-fi garage-surf rock vibe that would be right up my ally. Dick Dale and a theremin.

  • @kenmattsson  Feb 15

Okay, it was a good challenge and I wrote a bunch of Esperanto lyrics. Go to https://fawm.org/songs/118045/ to see them. Up for the challenge?

  • @kenmattsson  Feb 14

So @tuneslayer, if you write lyrics in Esperanto, I'd definitely collab and write the tune and sing it. I can sing in it pretty well, but I'm not as proficient in writing in it, especially poetry/song lyrics. Let me know if you're interested. I do sing the song Tiel La Mondo Iras.

  • @rbmarty000  Feb 10

Wow great.. Yes I was introduced to Hookpad though FAWM several years ago, and use it a lot . It is great for getting the lyrics into a tune or or visa versa. The lyrics automatically hook to the notes. Some adjustment is sometimes needed using the (-) if it won't divide a word, but simply paste the lyrics into the lyric section and then see them populate the song. adjust them as needed for scansion etc. I have the paid version, hookpad +.. I think 49 per year or you can buy the 149 version, but I used it a great deal to sketch out the tune and for lyric writing.
Looking forward to what you are doing with The Last Wild Horse.. feel free to adjust the lyrics etc. I'm not a stickler on keeping them if the song can benefit from something better. Cheers

  • @rbmarty000  Feb 9

lol yes.. Cay is correct of course.. Let me work in your llyics.. thanks

  • @scubed  Feb 8

Thanks for the nice comment on “Sorrow’s Waltz”!

  • @rbmarty000  Feb 8

Wanna collab on a song I have an idea and first verse..

    Koala Key

Don't you wish you could escape this dark and cold.
You know there's more to life than growing old
I know just the place to be
    on the Coral Sea
and we'd live where all Ko-al-as roam free.
Why don't you come there with me.

  • @rbmarty000  Feb 8

Ya.. nice to see you too.. you are doing well with 9 .. I gotta get going.

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 8

I don't really like playing favorites but maybe episode 4 and 13 are not to be missed! 4 because you wouldn't know Dan Razza a professional musician and a bit different and 13 because Marthie who you probably know has a very different approach and its a fun interview. Lots of great others but those 2 might be a good start.

Thanks for the heads-up re the skirmish title error ! Those numbers swirl in my head !!!
Re: my 16 songs so far: 1 is a duplicate (I had no control over it lol), and there are only 6 so far with demos. I consider myself to have reached 14 when I have 14 completed demos ! But I'm well on the way ! Thanks again.
