Thanks for your nice words. I also need music in these times - more than ever.

  • @standup  3 weeks

Hey thanks for listening to a bunch of stuff.

My best reverb is an actual spring. I found a used one of these:

But I also use a Caroline Meteore some. And just before FAWM for endless digital spaces I picked up a used

So probably Surfy Bear, supposedly a clone of the circuit in the old Fender reverb tanks, but not based on tubes.

But at this time I can’t confirm or deny the other two.

  • @sw1n3flu  4 weeks

90s alternative rock FTW. Totally get the sebadoh reference too - I was thinking. Dinosaur Jr. but hey let’s not split hair here ain’t much difference!!

  • @siebass  4 weeks

totally my bad on the misspelled name with the ph instead of v; I was just working off memory when I updated the header. Thanks for checking it out!

  • @jamesstaubes  5 weeks

You'd asked about Scottish Snap. This is the video where I learned about it. I saw you post one of Adam's other vids on CCM. πŸ˜€

  • @bru2 5 weeks

Here is a link to the plug in. ArEJEALw_wcB

It only took me about an hour. It was the first time I had messed with it, and it was a lot of fun.

  • @jamesstaubes  5 weeks

Steven you are a mensch. Thanks so much for listening to and commenting on all my songs! I will listen to yours as well. Yes, Terri Ann and I have a standing appointment each week to work on music. So she was here on both the FAWM tunes this year.

I'll check out the Selena Gomez song, I like her music a lot.

The two Mr. Black pedals I use, mainly, are the Eterna and Ambience. I also have a Chorus. The Eterna is a sweet, dense reverb which an extra synth type note that you dial in more or less of. The Ambience is a delay that has a tape delay feel, the delayed notes bend a little. Mr. Black makes all types of different pedals and they're not ridiculously priced.

However the Klon has become something of a legend. I know this artist John Vanderslice and in 2001 he said you've got to get a Klon. He has one. Back then the guy was still making them, by hand for $300. Yeh that's a lot but it's an amazing pedal. But now those things go used for $2,000.

Thanks again. It's folks like you that make FAWM a special place. πŸ˜€

The 4-tracks are always like this. You play something and send it out into the world. And you NEVER know what you'll get back.

  • @tsunamidaily  5 weeks

thank you for commenting (again) on the god whisperer. the guitar you hear is actually ukulele. i think the effect makes it sound harp-like in the context of the chamber pop, though.
    congratulations on a busy FAWM.

  • @tsunamidaily  5 weeks

demo up for the god whisperer. @owl on vocals
    hope you enjoy it.

  • @pfoo  5 weeks

The MS20 is an analog synth. I've got the "mini" which is a reproduction of the original, with smaller keys. I haven't done enough with synths to understand exactly what all the knobs do!

  • @leah0k  6 weeks

Hey! Thank you for all the input on my songs- I do appreciate that. I plan to to go back in March and go through all the ideas people had and see what fits together when I do some more thorough recordings to put an album together for Spotify. I have
HEARD OF Over the Rhine, but I have not HEARD THEM. So. I’m guessing I need to do that and solve the mystery of why you asked me that? Hmmm!

  • @arendleejessurun 6 weeks

Hey Steve, thanks for your kind words on my song! I'm particularly glad you liked all the "or" rhymes haha. I wondered, is this a bit much? And no worriesβ€”I'm sorry we couldn't meet too! But I'm looking forward to next time. πŸ‘πŸ»

  • @raindancerzero  7 weeks

Wow! Thank you for that amazing feedback! The mixing comments were super useful (truth be told my knowledge is less than basic so any feedback is a godsend) - thanks for listening!

  • @erelpi10  7 weeks

Hi β€” to answer your question, I’ve been using the drummer track on Logic. It let’s you pick a β€œdrummer” and a pattern and you can play with it. You control how simple or complex and how soft or loud. It’s useful for sketching out a song but a real, live drummer can’t be beat!

  • @cowex  7 weeks

Please do! I'm hoping to assemble a bunch of clips into a song this weekend unless my brain is still mush.

  • @zecoop  7 weeks

So......... I have some questions about the tape you sent. PM'd you on FB if you have time.

  • @raygungirls 7 weeks

Thanks for comoing on over to the Heavy side of music and checking out "Messages"!
I plug my guitar chord straight into my Mac. I have some guitar presets already set up in Garageband. 4 layers of guitar. 2 different guitar set ups, with different plugins. 1 set panned left, the other panned right. Playing the song through 4 times gets that thicker sound.

  • @chariotbaldwin  7 weeks

Hi there - thank you so much for the music for No Words - you lifted it up 100% - its a little diff to what i had in mind BUT it i got some serious compliments from my other half on this πŸ˜€

I'd love to have a copy of the .wav file - feel free to send it to me via FB messenger, or when you are ready, ping me and I'll dm you the preferred email address

    Morning Dude from Australia

I’m happy for you to give β€œNo Words” a crack. It’s always good to see how others interpret the same words. Lord knows my vocals do not do the song any favours !!

  • @tsunamidaily  7 weeks

thanks for commenting on the god whisperer. it's funny that the rhyme that tries to be most clever (miss its worth/ whisperer) doesn't rise to the others, but i completely understand.
you are doing great! keep up the good work.

  • @emkaydeebee  7 weeks

    Ps - thank you!!

  • @msisto 7 weeks

Thanks for the kind words about "Menthol Cigarettes"! To answer your question, the keys in the middle are a mix of a synth loop (tuned to sound like a Wurlitzer) and an actual Wurlitzer part. When combined, I sound like a much better player! πŸ˜€

I am using mostly stock Logic sounds, but I am messing with them quite a bit. Sometimes I send them out to my pedal board and then back.

    Always up for a collab!

  • @emkaydeebee  7 weeks

Hey @stevenwesleyguiles I think the drums were a one-take live (@zecoop ?)... I stretched out a pregnant pause (no pun intended) early on, and shortened the entire sequence to fit what I ended up needing. I use protools but very basically - I’m a total mixing amateur!

  • @jamesstaubes  7 weeks

Hey dude thanks for the listen! On the guitar I use 2 and 3 note chords. It's something I saw Nile Rodgers talk about, in person! When I went to Moog Fest in 2014 he was a keynote speaker and he had his guitar. He showed how he voiced chords vs. how a rock player would. So you take a Barre chord but only play the notes on the high strings, E, B, G and sometimes D. He said you don't need all those other notes and I agree. It muddies up the sound. It also allows you to add upper extensions to the chords, 9ths, 13ths. As you can hear, even in my tune, this approach makes the guitar pop out in the mix.

I played bass via MIDI but I finally (finally!) found a decent bass guitar sound in Logic. There's no way I could play a bass part that intricate and syncopated in the pocket. It'd take me all of February. πŸ˜€

  • @davidtaro  7 weeks

Hey Steven, thanks for the comment, hugely appreciated! Really loving FAWM - keep stumbling across so many cool songwriters like yourself. It's all very inspiring. Look forward to hearing what else you come up with this month πŸ˜€

(oh, and hope you feel better soon too)

  • @metalfoot  7 weeks

I wish, for your sake, that your kidney did not like calcification quite so much. I love doing acapella songs. So much fun to write and arrange. Thanks for the comment!

  • @philkmills  8 weeks

Thanks for your comment on the "Have A Great Day" song. It was a one-take recording, but I did write all the words out before hitting "record".

  • @treble 8 weeks

Thanks so much for your comments on Have a Great Day. Just writing it, and positive comments such as yours, are helping me to really have a great day.

  • @dugganensis  8 weeks

Hey thanks for your thoughts on our "great day" skirmish. I just used generic condenser mic, and tracked everything probably "too far away" from it from where I sat: The dry acoustic fingerpicking, dry vocal, then a reverbed lead panned right. I threw a pillowcase over a rack tom, unsnared the snare, and tapped those lightly with sticks. Same mic, 5 feet behind my back. Most of the reverb is artificial, though it's got plenty of natural bedroom verb to build upon. No one's mentioned my descending "While my guitar gently weeps" reference after the "swept the floor" line, (which is good; I was afraid it was too obvious.) Only mentioning that cuz you seem to be an uncanny listener on here, which I can see a lot of people really, really appreciate. Anywah, I've only heard of DJurado, but need to check out DWitmer! Thanks again!

  • @berni1954  8 weeks

Hi Steve, thanks for your listen and positive comments on my Have a Great day skirmish song. The song was inspired by a chat I had the other day with a supermarket check out lady.

  • @clioem 8 weeks

Hey thanks! It's actually an a classical acoustic! I ran the phone recording through Garageband afterwards and processed it a bit, modeled my own EQ on top of it as well. hence the cool sonorities. I've also liberally painted various parts with bitcrusher distortion, which is kind of my signature touch πŸ˜‰

  • @radioovermoscow 8 weeks

Thanks! I do wonder though if part of the reason it sound catchy is the chords are kind of nicked off 'Everlong', haha

  • @scottlake 8 weeks

EZ Drummer 2 drums, not sure which midi pack the ending is from. I can look it up if you like

  • @bradbrubaker  8 weeks

Thanks for the comment, sir! To answer your question, I write out tabs of riffs and chord progressions. I literally have a stack from over the years. I like to refer to it during FAWM. πŸ˜€

  • @pearlmanhattan  Feb 5

Thank you so much for your detailed comment on Meditation Two - and I will look into bringing that flute down until other stuff comes in, that's a great suggestion! The wooeeoo and piano and a few other loops came from a free soundpack at - I'm doing some vocal work for them (not the wooeeeoo). Thanks for listening!!

  • @sbs2018 Feb 5

Thanks for your comments on my songs. Yes, I usually start with loops - I find them quite inspiring and then add effects or do some extra drum programming or keyboard riffs in some way to make it my own. That’s the challenge. Still learning.

  • @musicbykatie  Feb 3

My dude you are a fucking MACHINE!! <3 i don't mean this year, like right now, i mean like, from when i met you in 2009 til now. im so glad you're still rocking. one of the only fawmers on my watchlist that writes and participates anymore. *cries*

  • @cowex  Feb 3

DAW = Cubase. The auto-tune is really auto, pretty set-and-forget unless it gets too artifacty. I use it to smooth over some rough edges after the manual pitch correction. *shrug*. If you haven't tried Neutron 3, the "assistant mode" is kind of fun, where it analyzes your track and tries to suggest some EQ/etc settings as a starting point. Not always the best answer, but it's sometimes a nice option for the lazy.

  • @cowex  Feb 3

Effects chain for the sneaky snake... looks like it was Auto-Tune -> Vocal Rider (automates the gain to level the vox) -> Neutron 3 (which itself is an FX chain of Sculptor -> EQ -> Exciter - automatically set, but i turned off compression) -> RVox (compressor, gate). I'm sure this isn't the best minimal set, and I probably won't use the chain gain except by accident, but that's what I had at mixdown time.

  • @expendablefriend  Feb 2

I SO know what you mean. I am trying to find ways to create songs faster...but it's hard for me. I can write a song in an hour, e.g. if I take part in a skirmish, but it'll only be 60% of the way there, at best. There willl be more details that I only uncover when I start arranging/recording etc., and that stuff just takes time. I do find myself wondering whether there's really a way around that. Perhaps the solution is to get to 70% then call it done. I don't know. I keep experimenting...

  • @expendablefriend  Feb 2

Wotcha! Thanks for the lovely comments. πŸ˜€ For drums I used the 707 kit built into one of FL studio's drum plugins (FPC). Electric guitar and bass sounds are courtesy of GTR3, which I got in a Waves sale a little while ago. It's such a good plugin that I never bother trying to record guitars any other way now! Hope that's useful.

  • @siebass  Feb 2

Sent to the email from your profile; sorry for the trouble

  • @siebass  Feb 2

@stevenwesleyguiles I removed and re-added you as the collaborator, let me know if that does it. If not, I can send it to you some other way; I just like to keep aggressive zong-busters away until the collab is done.

  • @siebass  Feb 1
