Hey man thx for the kind words. Sometimes things come to your musical mindset and it flows. I wish i knew how to do it all the times.
PS congrats on making 14....WHAT 30!!! holy poop as Mr. Opossum would say. Great job and you had like 17 collabs, that awesome also!
    See you next FAWM...stay safe.

  • @deena  5 weeks

Hey! Thanks so much for all your kind comments and careful listening!

  • @adforperu  5 weeks

Hey man, I've started going through some of my comments and what have you - firstly, thank you for your kind comments! Secondly, I completely missed your comment about production and wanting a chat about it, my apologies. Alas, I'm not sure what value I could bring haha. I'll be over to listen to some of your tunes over the next few days, congrats on smashing a double FAWM!

  • @danvaillancourt  5 weeks

Thanks Steve! The drums and keys were both online collabs. I played the other instruments and mixed it in my home studio. I did another fun track with those same two guys called "Metaphors and Allegories."

  • @zecoop  6 weeks

Hey wow, I need to catch up, but busy, you know! Anyway, you didn't use two tracks on the tape. At least not in the section of tape I recorded on. The casio bass and drums were together on track one and it was awesome. You can do anything you want on your track and that was an awesome starter! 😀

  • @tawalker 6 weeks

Thanks for commenting so positively on "Meander" - I have no idea how Spotify selects tracks for its own curated playlists, but I suppose putting them into Spotify in the first place, would be Job One 😅 "Meander" may make the shortlist for my next album project, so I guess we'll have to see how things pan out!

  • @debs  7 weeks

Darn my friend, you're having such a great FAWM and I can't wait to dig in! I'm sad that we won't get to collab this time around but know there shall be many more!

  • @joy212  7 weeks

Hey Steve! I just added the chords. I'm honestly not fussed about being done before FAWM, I'm planning to re-record and upload a few better demos anyway just for fun afterwards. How areyou doing? Great songs this year, as usual. 😀

  • @jamesstaubes  7 weeks

I'm listening to your episode on G Slade's podcast. Good stuff. I hope one day we can do an in person collab. Maybe next year.

  • @leslie333 7 weeks

Thanks for the nice comments! As soon as I get out of my (ack) next two zoom meeting I want to sample your songs.

  • @deadhead 8 weeks

Thanks for listening in. I play all of my midi drums on an electronic kit and my parts are mostly planned out beforehand. However, I tend to rush a lot and stumble a lot on more complicated pieces so I rely heavily on quantization / other edits afterwards. I find playing the parts, no matter how bad they sound, helps compose the part and set the stage for the rest of the instruments. Sometimes I'll even compose songs drums first by just improving something and seeing what sticks! Much nicer that writing out the parts in Musescore like I used to... that took forever and a half and the dynamics were very monotonous.

  • @artie 8 weeks

Steven, thanks for the FAWM introduction and the inspired comments. Debs spoke quite highly of you. I've listened to a couple of your tunes and really dig them!! How you write so many!!?? 🤯 Your voice sounds really fantastic btw. Great work!!

  • @musuko  8 weeks

Haha that's amazing. Crazy how huge and yet how small the internet can be.

  • @rockstarsmd  8 weeks

Yo SWG! Thanks for the high praise (sounding like Robert Pollard); I'll take that any ol' day!

  • @willie70hawkins 8 weeks

Thanks for listening and the feedback on The old house

  • @musuko  8 weeks

Thanks for all your kind words Mr. Gee!

Wow I'm always amazed at your songwriting volume, and how it is coupled with such great stuff! Congrats on winning FAWM again (already) haha. I feel like you may be the most winning FAWMer I'm familiar with, with the number of consecutive years and all the songs done.

Since you asked, that warm key sound was made in a rather convoluted way! I created it using an iPhone/iPad app called "Gauss Field Looper" which emulates tape and tape loops. I used another iOS app (maybe animoog) for sound, and some kind of midi sequencer to make a chord, and funneled 4 different instances into Gauss. I basically made 4 separate virtual tape loops with all kinds of tape emulated warmth and distortion, and then "played" them into my daw with volume faders like you'd play a four track that had a pad/chord on each track. I think there is a NIN YouTube video on how Cortini "plays" a 4-track. I basically did an emulated iOS version of that. It made sounds that I really enjoyed, though it was certainly a strange and roundabout way to get there!

  • @rickcannon 8 weeks

Yo, thanks for the generous comment! The keys loop is chopped from a sample I got on Splice; the drums and bass are from packs I got with my MPC One (I believe the bass is Sub3). Glad you dug it!

  • @fearlessflight2014  8 weeks

Thanks for listening to I Choose, it's funny that I wrote the world's happiest song and most miserable one back to back! I'm going to listen to a tune while I'm here though I should be writing and catching up instead. 4 songs posted by 15/2 - I'm so ashamed!

  • @nahlej381  Feb 13

Thank you very much! Appreciate you mentioning the guitar stuff, it’s harsh and weird but I like it lol

  • @avidfanman  Feb 13

Thank you for your very kind words on my song “Event Horizon”! To answer your question, this was entirely done using the stock synth patches in GarageBand iOS, primarily “Fuel Cells” and “Sequence Bass” 👍🏻

  • @yarimurray  Feb 13

I don't think we ever crossed paths in the OC (at least not that I was aware of). My main band days were in the 80's in some original bands and a hybrid original/obscure copy outfit.

Played some gigs on the Sunset Strip (Gazzari's, Troubadour) and OC venues like the Coach House, Galaxy and the Golden Bear (both the old one and the sparkly new one) over the years.

After that I went back to school and got a "real job" (still haven't cut my hair though).

More recently, before I moved back up north I was in various cover bands playing weddings, backyard parties, and sometimes gigs on Catalina Island.

  • @ajna1960  Feb 12

    Re-sent link to both places ! x

  • @sapient  Feb 12

RE the riff challenge. No, man, you were awesome! The chatter wasn't even on the fawm boards, so no need to worry 😃

  • @scottlake Feb 10

We have a puppy. And I’ve really worked hard at not being a ‘like’ or comment-needy person. I completely ditched Facebook; let my daughter change the password, etc. I’m just writing out lyrics that come to mind. If I get to the music in my head I will do it, but I’m giving myself the permission to be physically healthy over late nights at the DAW. I have a really sweet used Gretsch I bought with thrift shop resale profits, but even with that I’m just enjoying the puppy and trying to sleep.

  • @stephenwordsmith  Feb 10

Hi, Steven. Thank you very much for putting Cancel Me to music.

You might find the comment I left on it sits slightly outside FAWM's relentless unqualified positivity, but it's all directed at the lyricist. I enjoyed your performance very much, but it gave me an opportunity to see what I had written outside of the context of silence and in an environment that allowed it to be as songlike as possible. And in this benign environment, my nagging thoughts about word count and language level became much naggier.

    Some early-game soul-searching for me, I think.

  • @kissinginpublic  Feb 10

Thanks for dropping by! The extra time indoors at the moment is really helping with FAWM this year. I might make 14 for the first time since 2016!

  • @stephenwordsmith  Feb 9

    New track, please 😀

  • @stephenwordsmith  Feb 9

Based on the quality of With Hats upon their Heads, you have my full confidence and my blessing to go ahead and post it when you're done.

I also give advance consent for any tweaking, both necessary and elective.

    Cheers!

  • @stephenwordsmith  Feb 9

You're a brave man, SWG. You are more than welcome. I wish you nothing but luck.

  • @arthurrossi Feb 7

I would like to thank you so much for your kind words!

  • @mrgee1952  Feb 7

Lyrics were written out. Bass line was on the spot following no specific formula. Glad you liked it.

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 7

Thanks! I find it funny people are zeroing in on the Cars influence, which I guess is the square-wave synth... which was a last-minute addition to replace a bad vocal, haha

  • @itoarazi Feb 6

Thank you!! And it makes sense that it sounds like MM, since it was a song lambasting him! Hehe...and I used a little bit of overdrive, parametric EQ, compression and very short stereo delay! Happy FAWMing! I'll peruse your tracks later today!

  • @aeye Feb 6

Glad you liked Tomi! Our goal with each track is to do a “visual music” approach to things. I’m glad to know it’s coming across as we intended 😀

  • @tomslatter  Feb 6

Thanks for the comments! Dance on a tree is in E Phrygian 😀

The guitars bass and vox are real, the drums programmed.

  • @steffan  Feb 5

Ohhh that's swanky stuff! My wife would kill me if I went down the outboard rabbit hole, but I sure could use a nicer vocal path...

  • @steffan  Feb 5

Awe man. Thanks so much for the kind words!

My kit mic setup is ALL cheap stuff. (I don't think i've ever even touched a nice mic!)

Kick IN - Avantone Mondo (newest member of the family)
    KICK OUT - Shure KSM27
    Snare Top - Audix i5
Snare BTM - Some radioshack brand that I literally found in the trash.
    Hi TOM - SM58 (lol)
Low Tom - Shure PG52 (used to be my kick mic)
    Overheads - RODE NT5s
    Room - EV635a
All of that into my ART Tubeopto, except for the room mic which is just straight into my interface.

The are just in spaced pair on the inner edges of the symbols, and I always measure with string and tape to make sure they are equidistant from the center of the snare. I don't know if that helps all that much, but it's something I've been doing for awhile...

A big moment of clarity for me recently was running that Avantone Mondo into an LA3 style compressor and the bass into an LA2 style. Just magically made the kick and bass play nice together...

  • @guatecoop  Feb 5

Thanks! It was satisfying to get one done. I will be back, as usual. You have been productive!

  • @dublimat Feb 4

@stevenwesleyguiles Thanks for the tips. I don't have a fortnite user name because I am such a lame person that I only watch people playing games, and then I play strategy or rpg games where I invent the whole universe by myself. I did Install fortnite recently. My level is zero.

  • @erinkelsey3 Feb 3

Ahhh hii I am so glad you were the first to listen/comment on my first fruits song! How fitting, since you're the fawmer I most associate with the challenge. 😀 I'm so happy you liked it. Can't wait to listen to yours!

  • @zecoop  Feb 2

No dolby. The rule for everything is does everyone have that feature? So no 2x, no Dolby, etc. 😀

  • @nancyrost  Feb 2

I don't have Dolby NR on my machine. Thanks for asking!

  • @sourcedecay  Feb 2

Hi Steven! Thanks for your comment on "The Devil's Rain". I'm a big Bright Eyes fan, so I take the comparison as a big compliment : )

  • @robynmackenzie  Feb 2

Yes! Congrats on 13 years! I think this year's FAWM is needed even more than usual.

  • @joy212  Feb 2

Hi Steve! Long time no FAWM (for me)! I don't know if I'll make it to 14 this year but I'm sure going to try..

  • @rustyp Feb 2

It's like a yearly touchstone. Fawm brings us back together.

You know you're a big reason why I got 7 placements last year! 😀

    Thanks!

We should do a song or something. 😀

  • @tseaver  Feb 2

Thanks for the listen to my "Under Warm Skies." You asked, "Are these all 'organic' instruments, or are some of them virtual?" They're mostly virtual: the steelpans and marimba are from Pianoteq, the "marimbula" is actually a Spitfire LABS music box at the bottom of its (downsampled) range. I played claves, cowbell, tambourine, and guira myself.

  • @cts  Feb 2

    I'd be down for that.

  • @dudachris Feb 2

I really appreciate that comment on my soundboard and will look into that book suggestion. Learning how and when to use my power to make room for others AND when to lay it down is an important part of my journey.

  • @musicbykatie  Feb 1

I just realized you made me edit my bio but YOUR bio does not mention our amazing Fornite album AT ALL.......... i sense a double standard going on here.

  • @chariotbaldwin  Feb 1

Impressive tally there Mr Gilles - may 2021 be just as fabulous

  • @musicbykatie  Feb 1

    you're so fucking Fawmous.

    & I edited my bio.

Best wishes to you on an amazing FAWM 2021! 🎵

great to see ya again here!

    SWG! Happy Fawming, brother!

  • @danvaillancourt  Feb 1

Steve! Looking forward to another year and hearing your songs! Let me know if you want to do a collab again this year.

  • @jayafrica  Jan 31

Hey, SWG! I'm giving it another go this year. Looking forward to hearing your tunes 😁

  • @sapient  Jan 31

SWG, my man, are you by any chance ready to ROCK?
    I know I am 😁

  • @petemurphy  Jan 30

Ah, sorry I made you balk, but you did come across as a beautiful soul in the interview.
I was unsure if I'd be able to join in this time around, but I'm gonna go for it.
I hope you have a good one. I'll be listening.
    Cheers SWG!

  • @seemanski  Jan 29

Hey, hope you are doing well. Sorry I dropped off the face of the earth with GYAW, I got really into it but then got distracted with a different songwriting thing out there. Not even sure if I am still in the group anymore. Looking forward to hearing your stuff, have a great FAWM.

  • @jamesstaubes  Jan 29

Hey Steven. Hope you're well. Are you ready, sir?

  • @petemurphy  Jan 28

    Hello Mister G.
I just finished listening to your episode on the G Slade Show.
What a great human you are. I loved hearing you talk, and I greatly appreciated your honesty, your humour, and your 'be excellent to each other' vibes.
Wishing you all the very best.

  • @honeybadgerfolk Jan 26

    Hello! Happy FAWMing 😁

  • @carleybaer  Jan 26

Hello and happy FAWMing to you good sir 😀

  • @ericdistad  Jan 26

Mssr SWG - I write to inform you that you are awesome!

    Have a great FAWM!

  • @audrey  Jan 26

Hi! Hope you have a great FAWM 2021

  • @andrewjtaylor  Jan 26

Hi Steven! Just 1 week till FAWM!

With all the turmoil since last FAWM, & especially since November, it's hard to feel quite as amped up about it.

"Unnecessary creation" just feels a little less necessary than usual.

But...the artists (music & video creators, especially) are arguably the most influential modern-day philosophers, & every day/week/month/year we spend honing our craft is a day/week/month/year invested in contribution to culture, no matter how small our circle of influence.

Hope you have a great Feb./FAWM, no matter how you spend it.

  • @charliecheney  Jan 25

Love you mister! Also, loved your lyrics brainstorming vid. Very cool.

  • @joshbelville  Jan 24

*sits patiently at the edge of the stage, like a good boy, waiting for good songs*

  • @sw1n3flu  Jan 24

BOoJ? Lol anything goes with me. And yea fame and fortune awaits!

  • @sw1n3flu  Jan 24

B.O.J. is that our new side project?

  • @sw1n3flu  Jan 19

    Also.

    BACON.

  • @johncrossman  Jan 18

Oh Steven of many names and many songs, I do enjoy them so.

  • @sw1n3flu  Jan 13

    HOLLER!

  • @steffan  Jan 11

    FAWM!

  • @evinwolverton  Jan 10

I'm straight up cackling at the insanity of your quantified song counts over the last years. I really hope you'll be back to lap me several times all over again. ♥︎
