We can do a hang. I'm also entertaining the idea of having a FAWM over party at my place in Culver City. I don't have a PA or chairs though. It'd take a little effort but it's doable.

  • @guatecoop  Mar 7

Holy crap that 4 track is cool. I love your topic, lyrics, and singing! Great idea and performance for the song. Well done! I will post this comment on the song, but wanted to say that to you directly.

  • @johncrossman  Mar 1

Comment frenzy! Much appreciated. 😀 I'll be back. (pssst... forte...)

  • @yarimurray  Mar 1

Thank you for listening and your comments for Here We Go Again. I do like the British jangly sound and that certainly influences my playing and tone choices. I've enjoyed listening to some of your stuff and I am looking forward to hearing more.

  • @lhcisco  Feb 28

dude, if you haven't seen it, this is awesome:

  • @lhcisco  Feb 28

What's shakin' man!? My guitar tones are a Joyo American pedal direct to interface for the cleans. It's basically a Fender Twin pedal ($30?!?), and my dirt is some kinda fuzz pedal on my Digitech RP1000. The bass tone/rhythm track in the middle was played with my neck pickup and I just thru a stereo chorus on it.

DUDE, that's the one thing that I learned that changed the game for me. I watched Tom Morello's rig run down, and he said every riff he EVER wrote was played with the NECK pickup of a tele. I was like huh? Kinda makes sense tho.

  • @jamesstaubes  Feb 28

You're a machine. How do you write so many songs with a job and family? You're the man. You crushed it this year. So many different styles, ideas and vibes. Can I be you when I grow up? 😉 Looking forward to the FAWM over party.

  • @majordanby  Feb 28

Here you go. Three unfinished ideas. I’ve been struggling with chords this year.

No offence if they don’t inspire.

  • @majordanby  Feb 28

    This is not an invitation
    This is not a call
    Revolution at your door
Struggling to find the next words

All that glitters is not gold
    Tin foil for the soul
    Slipping through conversations
    Who could ask for more

Sometimes it’s hard to say what you want
Sometimes it’s easier to turn your back and run
But you are always welcome in my arms
    In my arms

There is more than meets the eye
    We are only human
    Imitations all around
Close your eyes and don’t look down
This is not where you belong
    So be gone

Catch me falling through the trees
    This is an emergency
    Telephones that never ring
    And sirens always bring trouble

    Fireworks don’t follow me
I am not the friend you need
    So I won’t apologies
I am not the one to blame

Sometimes it’s hard to say what you want
Sometimes it’s easier to fall in love
But you are always welcome in my arms
    In my arms

    Freedom is at your door
But all we seem to do is work
It doesn’t have to be this hard
    Everyday we

    You painted all the roses
    Claiming now they are perfect
    Much better than before

You threw away the things they loved
    Replaced all the photographs
And filled your world with junk

    What have you done?
Who do you think you are?
    You’ve gone too far
It’s not like it was before
    We’ve come too far

    Standing like Napoleon
    Eyes fixed upon the ocean
    Waiting for the storm

    You looked just like portrait
    A water colour Josephine
    A vision of yourself

    What have you done?
Who do you think you are?
    You’ve gone too far
It’s not like it was before
    We’ve come too far

You say you paint the roses
Because it gives you a purpose
    A reason to believe

    Nothing is important
The things you are working on
    You give them all away

    What have you done?
Who do you think you are?
    You’ve gone too far
It’s not like it was before
    We’ve come too far

You say you paint the roses
Cause it make you feel important
    You’ll give them all away

  • @majordanby  Feb 28

Turn your back against the rain
    Always smile when you complain
    You complain
Don’t be afraid your secrets they are safe

    Out here we are stars
Seems we always break our hearts
Out here waiting for the start
    Falling always seems so hard
    Be carful what you say
    What you say

Washed up and out of luck
Like leaves the two of us we rust
Washed up and out of luck
    This machine has had enough

    Arms open wide
    Reach to the sky
Together we can fool the world
    No matter what they say
Listening as we slowly slip away

    Out here we are stars
Seems we always break our hearts
Out here waiting for the start
    Falling always seems
    Be carful what you say
    What you say

    Hide behind your enemies
    Be carful what you say
Listen as you slowly slip away
Listen as you slowly slip away

  • @majordanby  Feb 28

Thanks for all the listens and comments. This is Karl highjacking Dan’s account. I’m all good thanks 👍👍👍👍 on going. Dan’s not about today as he’s gone to a gig, he will be blown away by your comments. I know of BRITISH SEA POWER AND WILL (hold on) check them out.

  • @majordanby  Feb 28

Well I’ll be. We have been borrowing heavily from Radiohead and just listened to No Surprises. You are spot on, although I didn’t realise when writing it. We thought it was a bit Flaming Lips? I was listening to Modest Mouse, Blame It On The Tetons at the time, which I think the last song we did sounds more like it. I wrote that one trying to find a chorus for Computer.

  • @weakness Feb 27

Alright thanks a million man!!! I use Logic Pro x but I could try learning from whatever you're using as well; whatever's easiest for you!

  • @weakness Feb 26

Thanks a ton for linking me to your video on mixing! That definitely has been helping a ton compared to what I had been doing previously; especially the low pass/high pass stuff!

I'm totally blown away listening to more of your rock mix stuff, and sort of lost on how to get stuff to sound that punchy/separated/clear/big. I think another thing I'm really lost on is just finding out the overall 'space' a certain instrument should comparatively sit in (eq wise, how big or small it should be, etc.) Would you ever consider doing another mix walkthrough of a rock track in the future; maybe like a before and after? Or maybe letting someone see the files before and after you did your processing?

  • @ampersandman  Feb 25

Thanks Steven for your kind words once more. I see you're running full steam FAWM – great! And yes, I do love me some Japandroids.

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 25

I don’t know if it’s too late but just sent you a lyric

  • @sw1n3flu  Feb 25

Thanks for the encouragement...! I’m feeling good today, plenty o time to get the win

  • @pearlmanhattan  Feb 24

I emailled you some lyrics this morning. No pressure or rush. Thank you for inviting me to send them. Great FAWM! and great show yesterday!

  • @bradbrubaker  Feb 24

Thanks for your kind words about "Suicide City" on FAWMtalk, dude!

  • @johncrossman  Feb 24

Cheers, mate. Or cheer, smate. 😀

  • @billysea  Feb 23

Hi Steve, this thing gets bigger and bigger each year. Hard to keep up with old friends 😀 I was off half the month too so that makes it harder.

  • @sapient  Feb 19

    Ah. Happy days...
I see this less as a competition and more a celebration of the amazing talent in our little community. 😃

  • @sapient  Feb 18

So nice to be in the riff semis with you. Let's have at this in the true spirit of FAWM... A riff made now is a riff that would never have otherwise existed 😁

  • @scottlake  Feb 18

How do you grab the image link on the imgur app that allows direct posts? I cannot find it anymore and it’s driving me nuts.

  • @scottlake  Feb 17

Lyric editing - I wrote these lyrics way before I had an idea what kind of music I wanted. I couldn't get Stray Cat's "Stray Cat Strut" out of my head, so I figured I would nick the chord progression, but take an alternate melody approach. I found a style in EZ Drummer for the drums, and constructed the drum track. Played piano along with the drums while trying to cram the words in - didn't work for many lines. So I edited the Google Doc for some of the lines and printed that out as I sang to the piano and drums. I didn't bother to change the lyrics.
I'm finding this year I am releasing myself from the burden of recording the same time that I come up with lyrics. Yes it always results in fewer listens and comments, but instead I'm getting words out before I forget them. Next song is about my daughter's guinea pig and her favorite bass guitar. Daughter is out of town at a volleyball tournament and she promised me I would cuddle her guinea pig, Beverly. Yesterday, as I was doin

  • @zecoop  Feb 2019

Think you can mix down a tape, instead of going third? No worries if you don't want to make that leap. My brother Rob is here this weekend, and he's supposed to send it to you, then to me. Since he is here, I could do the third part and then it would go to you for the fourth and mixing. Either way - let me know. 😀

  • @jwhanberry  Feb 2019

  • @jnatiw  Feb 2019

Thanks for the kind words, broski!

  • @guatecoop  Feb 2019

Hey there, no I’m going to send it tomorrow. I just got bogged down with too many things!

  • @eargoggle  Feb 2019

Hey Steven thanks for your great comment on my song I’m in Love...yeah, that was all 4-track, and while I do a lot of bouncing most times that one was just a straight 4 tracks. Which might be part of why that sounded really good! Since the more bouncing you do the muddier it tends to get...

  • @metalfoot  Feb 2019

I guess I have a few songs on my wall. But you do too! 😁

  • @vomvorton  Feb 2019

Cheers Steven! That's the Omnichord that comes in on the chorus. Definitely one of those sounds that can evoke nostalgia within seconds!

  • @timfatchen  Feb 2019

yay for the 14. I keep getting sidetracked getting to old watchlisted folks from long ago.

  • @downfallroad  Feb 2019

Ha! right? Thanks dude. I actually time shifted by 1 second too since I thought 32 seconds might be too much over the line!

  • @fulanin Feb 2019

I love the Jack Black picture you've been giving to the riffs hahaha. Thanks for the support.

  • @robynmackenzie  Feb 2019

    Punk rock!

  • @downfallroad  Feb 2019

\m/ Thanks dude. Yeah! All my songs are acoustic in "dropped D turned down 1/2 step" or dropped C#. Listening to this riff again kinda reminds me of Testament's Demonic Refusal, which is a good thing! Thanks for listening, and good luck to you in round one of the badassriff contest!

  • @haim  Feb 2019

Hahaaa, thanks man! Love the baddass riff approved photo you made me laugh! I enjoyed it! was worth the pressure! Waiting for the results mate, may the best WIN~!

  • @judypie  Feb 2019

Thank you for listening Steven! It sure was fun playing around in that old sandbox!😁 This has been a very educational Fawm for me! Enjoy the playtime dude!

  • @toddnorem  Feb 2019

Very cool that you were all in the same room with your Text Pistols songs. The recordings were really great. Thanks for the nice words on my tunes too.

  • @ampersandman  Feb 2019

Thanks SWG for your kind words on "Cape". You made me happy, and I'm not just saying that as a phrase. Fawm on!

  • @spinhead Feb 2019

Hey, good point about Johnny-Cashing that song. Must ponder.

  • @dragondreams  Feb 2019

    Indeed, Steven. 😉
I also locked it to build suspense and add to the excitement around the whole thing. "Did he go acoustic, or didn't he?" 😂😎😉🎸

  • @mkd  Feb 2019

Thank you for your supportive words.

  • @haim  Feb 2019

Me to sir! Lets do it!! Gonna be fun.

  • @raygungirls Feb 2019

Thanks for checking out a few of my songs! Appreciate it.
I record using Garageband. Plug my fender strat straight into my laptop, and record two tracks panned hard right and left. My fender jazz bass is also plugged straight in and I record two bass tracks with different plugins in each to create that thick dirty bass.
the drums are the automated GB drummer, that I tweak.

  • @mattblick  Feb 2019

The mercurial and prolific Mr Gee - we meet again!

  • @zecoop  Feb 2019

Here's how *I* saw it. Feel free to hear it differently, lol

    2x Intro
    4x Verse
4x Chorus (ride with different fills)
    4x Verse 2
4x Chorus (ride with different fills)
    4x Bridge (fast tom part)
    4x Verse 3
4x Chorus (ride with different fills)

  • @jordie Feb 2019

Thanks for the welcoming comment! Took the advice and added a lil bit of info to my bio 😀 Good luck this month!

  • @zecoop  Feb 2019

Sent you an answer, but I'll say it here too. My bad - I totally forgot to write down (for all my tapes) what I did to help the next person. I did actually play a pattern for the one you got. Any chance you could MP3 that track and send it to me? I can interpret what I did. 😀

  • @jamesstaubes  Feb 2019

I had an idea. What if what one weekend day I come over and we collab on some songs? I bet we can write and record 2 in a day. Yes I invited myself over. 😀

  • @kovbleu  Feb 2019

Oh, AWESOME! Thanks so much for checking out our album. I'm so glad you liked it!! 😀

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 2019

PS. The drums are programmed. A mix of the alt-rock kit in SD3 and some Steven Slate stuff (cymbals, toms, some snare layering)

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 2019

The bad-ass riffs are back, baby!

  • @thelostcartographer  Feb 2019

  • @thelostcartographer  Feb 2019

It's a fake double track - one guitar, split to two different amp sims, one of which has a small delay in front of it. I figured I didn't have time to record tight double tracks 😀

  • @pearlmanhattan  Feb 2019

Il loving your instagram stuff and youtube stuff. I would be honored to collab with you, for sure. Hit me up with what you'd need from me and let's do something. Thanks for asking. That really means a lot to me.

  • @helenseviltwin  Feb 2019

Re: Steal your thunder - everything was DD's, apart from a very simple bassline for the intro and verses. I didn't want the funky bassline going throughout, but it sounded weird without. I couldn't be bothered to plug my bass guitar in, so put on a synth preset called "Blue Sunday" partly because the name amused me (but also because I figured Peter Hook sound would work 😀

  • @bru2  Feb 2019

Steve, you should watchlist my buddy @lukepapararo he is the one that I played a few of his songs for you.

  • @oblivionratula  Feb 2019

Glad you like the gear pics. I've got even more this year - it's kind of an illness but I've curbed it a bit now. Definitely going to have to check out your tunes.

  • @bru2  Feb 2019

Dude! already 5 songs!!! WTF! are you going for a new record of FAWM songs for a year? You are an inspiration... and a mad man!!!

  • @bradbrubaker  Feb 2019

Thanks for the thoughts on "Suicide City." And as for Nada Surf "Always Love" of my favorites!

  • @saxylizbeth  Feb 2019

Sure - no probs. Email the track over with notes of what you’d like. Flute, clarinet, alto / tenor / Bari sax available

  • @standup  Feb 2019

THanks for checking out “Dreams Creep”, the drums are EZ Drummer, my crutch. I threw PSP Vintage Warmer on the drums after you reminded me of it a few days ago! And holy crop, you’ve got FOUR songs done!

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 2019

ha, thanks- and yes, i'll work on a lyric! 😀 great to see ya here again!

  • @musicbykatie Feb 2019

Nice to see you too!! 😀
.. not even surprised that you already have 2 songs up. Lol! Professional fawm champion.

  • @krayzie003  Feb 2019

Thanks for your comments. Let the music move you.

  • @valuerock Feb 2019

Hell yes! The best values in ROCK! Have fun dude!

  • @judypie  Feb 2019

Haha awesome, I’ve been practically living inside rdr2! Thinking of writing a little camp-fire inspired ditty 😁

  • @evinwolverton  Jan 2019

    Sounds good to me!

  • @evinwolverton  Jan 2019

I'd love to collaborate. I write music about 20x more easily than lyrics. I'm down to either leverage that preference or challenge that handicap. What's the best method for you?

  • @zecoop  Jan 2019

I can't wait to see what he comes up with... LOL

  • @dancrook  Jan 2019

sounds good fella. You working in Logic?

    Thank you 🖤

I love you Stevey. Thank you for welcoming me to this community in person 10 years ago when I was just a lowly street urchin known as Xach the Ripper.

    You rule.

  • @evinwolverton  Jan 2019

Every year I have to repopulate my watchlist from scratch for some reason, and I get a sensible out of your avatar photo *every time*

  • @johncrossman  Jan 2019

No, YOU owe ME a duck! Wait, maybe I didn't read that right... Either way, ducks all around!

  • @guatecoop  Jan 2019

Btw, I sent 2 120 minute type 1 for trying out things and a type 2 60 min for when you get where you want to be recording-wise.

Any chance we might go collabing again this year?

  • @nuj4x Jan 2019

  • @lhcisco  Jan 2019

Like to hear some of that Sesame Street influence this year!

  • @jamesstaubes  Jan 2019
