Been doing FAWM for 9 years now, every year I want to be better in some way. It's been a struggle in recent years because of becoming a father and feeling obliged to let my daughter get some sleep and I've been trying to develop a way that I can keep writing the way I want to i.e. crooning my head off.
To record vocals and lay down ghost tracks I have a tascam dp-006. This little baby also allows me to saunter off to a layby in the peak district and record my vocals at any level I like. The result surprised me actually. Therefore, if you find yourself heading off to the peaks and see a steamed up car, I'm not dogging, I'm making music! I also decided to get a volca bass in an attempt to get some bass lines, use my zoom rt-123 drum machine and a zoom G1on which is a battery powered guitar pedal, which means I can go anywhere I like and pretend I'm a rock god.
Finally, I have been trying to better myself as guitarist by learning my scales, there was a songwriting book bundle on humble bundle that I have been working my way through and I am currently demolishing "Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio" by Mike Senior which has furthered my shopping spree. I have bought myself some nearfield monitors (sorry guys I was mixing with just headphones before) and I am currently in the process of trying to build a diy auratone speaker (https://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=...). By in the process, I of course mean I have bought the midrange speaker that is currently gathering dust on my desk.
After all that, it will probably still sound pants! Oh well, my mum always said. It's not the winning, it's the taking part that counts.
Feedback is the food of kings and I am always very grateful for any comments that come my way, so let me know what you thinking and if people want to collaborate on stuff, give me a shout.
My most recent ventures are on https://soundcloud.com/see-man-ski. I would be keen to get feedback on any of the tracks (preferably the most recent as that is when I started trying to get better at mixing).

Aw. Thank YOU for writing such a killer song!! 😀 It was really fun to work on.
Re. Your tick song comment, I really read 'this makes me want to skip' in a completely different light to how I *think* it was intended
Yay! So glad! 😀
Thank you for your really kind comment!
I went ahead and posted it!!! Hope you like what I did. 😀
So I've got a vocal thing started for no7. Do you want me to email it to you before posting or do you want me to just surprise you? Lol
Thanks for your lovely comment on “Whenever I Look at You”! And yes, he did. 😊
ha-HA! Yes, ignore the NSFW badge at your peril 😉
They're probably pretty easy to make, but for £15 I thought it was worth a shot! I kept getting ads for it on Instagram weirdly, not sure how they fund a significant advertising push on such a cheap product but I guess it worked!
Thanks for the kind words on Star Light! The chords & melody for the chorus came from fooling around on a piano, after listening to some children's songs on YouTube (ahh, the interwebs...)
Thanks for the awesome comment as always 😀 I've been relistening to Master / Slave but desperately need to check out your others. Wow already 10. Way to go!
I really appreciate your kind comment on "Revive Me (23)". I think we've probably listened to many similar Christian rock bands. I grew up on Red and Skillet. Here's a lesser known similar band that never grows old for me: This Beautiful Republic. Two albums in the mid 2000's. If you like those others I think you'll dig their stuff. Overtly Christian but rocks hard. Permanently in my gym music rotation. 😀
Thanks! I’m super glad you enjoyed that version of out.
Song coming your way soon...........
Glad you enjoyed "Igniting Trees." People are weird, no?
Thanks for your very kind comment on I Would Have Let You Go. It means a lot!
Thanks for commenting on "Little House Beside the Sea." I appreciate it.
Hey, I got the stems. Thanks! It sounds really cool. It actually was my plan to add anything but vocals (@kovbleu has got a great voice btw and her vocals would fit the song very well), but if you let me, I would be sure to add bass in the part I mentioned (and the part preceding it). I will see what happens besides bass. Thanks for having me a go at it. Oh by the way, yes, I soloed the bass and I noticed bass! But I did not hear it in the overall mix. I'll hit you up when I think I've got something going.
Your "Treading Bleu Collection" - perfect! lol 😀
Ooo - interesting take on Caterpillars! I'll listen to it again, imagining the Cheshire Cat singing it.
Hey Seemanski, thanks for listening and leaving your comment on my first entry. Thanks to Star Trek 😀
Well your link didn't work but thank you dude, I will have a mess around before my next guitar recording! Looking forward to catching up with your output!
Appreciated. I've been glued to FAWM and my guitar since the 2nd, so I'm still only 1/2 through the season. I'm strangely hoping I get bored for a few hours so I can watch more.
Thank dude! I will google low end frequency and eq, I’m fecking clueless 😂 I dunno if that’s something I can do in garage band?! I was just thinking of not putting my ear phone inside my guitar next time?! Just constructing a contraption that will enable me to hang my earphone (and it’s inline mic) from my ceiling using a series of pulleys so that it will just dangle right in front of my guitar?! Your idea might work better, I will get onto researching that!
I'll tell ya, it took me yearrrs to get over the idea that I "needed" a drummer, and when I got over that, then I "needed" a realistic-sounding drum machine (they don't exist). I'm not knocking great drum machines that do their jobs well (I'm a big fan of Bee Gees and Marilyn Manson), but for my own music I'm trying to be as organic as possible these days. I sense a similar want-of-organicness in your material, too. It's worth chasing those sounds, and beating them out one piece at a time. Good luck!
Hey, thanks for checking out my version of the Tan Van. Two thumbs way up for upgrading to monitors from headphones, too.
Thanks! *That era* could be right now if people wanted it 😝
Hey man, I love the track, very dead astronauts. However, I'm not really feeling the creative juices. Maybe I gotta skip this FAWM after all. At least I'll be taking a break for this week. We'll see. 😁 But yea, feel free to consider somebody else for the lyrics.
I’m definitely up for a collab! Last years was an awesome return to form. You are completely excused for time off due to a wonderful child. I remember those times clearly.
Looks like you’ve been doing FAWM as long as I’ve wanted to do it. Will definitely keep popping back to you page
Thank you for coming by to listen and comment!
Regarding Machinarium, I've never heard of that one but the art style of intriguing. I went and listened to a bit of the soundtrack on YouTube. Good grief, The Wall (I think that's what the track is called).
I must explore the entire thing. Thank you!
Oh neat! I'll give it a go for sure later today.
I've struggled with mixing, and what really makes me mad is that sometimes I can get it so good while other times I feel like I don't have ears at all.
Reference tracks...I think that's an awesome and effective idea, and you've inspired me to go that route!
Thanks loads for the listen and the comment! 😀
Great to see you here again. 😀
Thank you for the nice comment! I have to admit, I don't know how people do good vocal chopping so I used a freebie sample pack from Aubit!
Thanks! It's becoming somewhat of a trend for my family in February. We shall press on! Keep the party moving, dude!
Much talent here. Good stuff 😀
So good to see you here again! Looking forward to hearing what you come up with.
Hello! Yes I will be about, looking forward to some car vocals! I might have to steal that tip given my dogs dislike for anything vaguely musical!!
Thanks for the message, definitely gonna try write a few more songs on guitar this year, we'll see how it goes. Hope you have a great FAWM
Got it. Thanks! 😀
Sounds good, man. 😁 you can use and change anything you want. I might even try to write something genre appropriate.
Cool, yeah I'm more than happy to play whatever you're happiest with. If you could make it downloadable, I'll grab it and get it on next week's show. Cheers!
Cheers my friend. Have a real good one yourself.
Great, thanks! It's only a small, independent, online station, but it's going pretty well so far. It's owned by one of my favourite musicians (Ergo Phizmiz). Lots of avant garde and experimental stuff on there, and on my show I try to play independent artists as much as possible. The station is here - https://wolvertonfm.hotglue.me/?contents
and I do updates on my Facebook music page - facebook.com/petemurphymusic
If you have any preference of what you'd like me to play, let me know. If not, I'll choose something from the album you have on Bandcamp. Cheers!
Have a great tenth FAWM!
Congrats on ten years!
It's on March 14th at JT Soar in Nottingham, but I don't have the full line-up or other details yet.
A collab eh? I don't want to say no, but my plan was to just write a bunch of lyrics this time around. Maybe we can make something happen anyway! 😀
Yeah, I pick up tips along the way, and I share them if I find they've been helpful to me, but on the whole I find the recording and mixing process really difficult. Writing songs is something I find easy, but everything else gives me headaches.
Hey, would it be cool if I played one of the songs from your album on my show next week?
Good to hear that all is well with you.
Hey seemanski! Thanks, I really appreciate it. I hope you're doing well, and hope your FAWM is great.
Ey up! Your list of new gear sounds cool, looking forward to hearing what comes out of it!
Hey man, yeeeah I haven't progressed a whole lot but I'll see what I can do 😀 Glad you're around, sir!
Hey! Happy FAWM 2020! Let's do this!!
Hi there! Best wishes to you and happy fawming!
Dude!!! Happy FAWM!!! Looking forward to hearing from you and hoping to collab! 😀
