Hang'n out in the hills of Vermont & New Hampshire playing guitar and crafting music. Interested in collaborating with anyone who can actually sing (vs me...). Just trying to have fun and get better.
I’m very open to critical feedback. I’m new to writing lyrics and I’m very limited in vocal range and ability. As a result I try to lean on, what I hope to be, guitar playing that’s interesting enough to glue it all together.

Thx for comment on Gotta Get Better. Yes programmed drum. I don't know a drummer who can lay down a few tracks for me...someday maybe.. Love your tele stuff.
Hey hey, I'm absolutely horrendous at the titting and the tatting, but I repay all listens with a listen.
Thanks for the listen on "Bubble Bath!"
The ebow is super fun! There are some other guitar sustainers out there too that are fun. I have an instrumental called "fauxbow" that uses two different guitar tracks with two different sustain devices.
Also, you don't need a separate preamp to do that trick, should work any 1/4in input on any interface or even a solid state guitar amp, PA, etc. Fun trick! Let me know if you try it out. 😀
Hey Rich - just wanted to say that you are a real find! I came late to your party this FAWM, but will be looking for you next February. Have so enjoyed listening to all your songs (and collabs) - great guitar playing, and you have no need to knock your voice. It conveys all the honesty and feelings your lyrics so artfully express. Keep pressing forward!
Hi Rich. Just read back one of your comments re Davy Knowles. Realised I didn’t recognise the name... how have I missed this dude? He’s amazing! And also 7 years younger than me 😭. Thanks for the tip-off anyway. Hope you’re still enjoying the post-FAWM listening party!
Hey thanks so much.. yes I've got better results when recording guitar and vocals separately. Using Ableton and still very much learning. Interesting to see what people are.doing! I've just got a condenser mic.. I haven't got my head around the different types of mic yet
having fun yet? 😀
Hey, I don't know, since you're a guitar guy you might like 'It's Easy' or 'Crocus' or 'Emily', those have a lot of guitar...'Sugarcoated Love' is 12 string so that's like 2 guitars! But anything really.
Thanks for tittaags 😄
Yes, drums are programmed, had no chance to record real drums in the middle of the night at home 😄
Really enjoyed listening to your stuff, man! We share some guitar tastes in common I think. Definitely have a listen to Johnny Got his Fun as I think it will be up your alley. And for something guitar centric but a little more Django inspired check out Heed.
Liking what I'm hearing so far! Since you're partial to guitar maybe you should do Johnny Got His Fun and Heed for your next 2. Those are the most guitar centric ones.
I suggest to start from casters of the universe 😄
If you like mellower stuff, maybe "leftovers" and "captain of the. .." and "mama said.."
others are mainly bassgrooving. "Dadastik" is funkier and "last man.." is just pure mindbubbling what was put together in 45mins.
Depends what you like.
As label says, it's mainly about the bass 😀
Thanks for the guidance. Guess, I'd like some feedback on Slipped and Read the News, Carousel, Fascinator, and Till the Final Sashay.
Vocal range and ability is my nightmare too: I console myself with the realisation that if I _don't_ sing it, it won't happen at all.
Thanks for listening and commenting on my collab song "Fades Away" with mikeb, I appreciate it!
Thanks for the Reverb info. Your production sounds pretty good to me - you have good instincts (and ears). There are always things to learn from what other people are doing, and different approaches. That's what makes FAWM so great.
That is what it sounds like, I have a lot of keyboards and modules etc, and I found it very frustrating to keep repatching things when I had a mixing desk, and I wanted to get everything in cleanly. So I have a Presonus 24 input desk and the equivalent digital stage box, then two MOTU interfaces 16A and 24i, which also have 5 Behringer ADA8200 interfaces plumbed into their ADAT optical inputs. The Presonus units and MOTUs are all networked together (AVB protocol) and the 16A has a thunderbolt interface that brings me 128 channels directly into the MacBook. The whole system gives me 128 input channels and up to 96 outputs. It's a bit insane, but it's served me well through FAWM to just pick an input channel and play. The mic has been going straight into the desk this year, but I do have an ART Tube interface that can give a bit of boost, which I've used in the past.
Thanks for answering the mic question. The Rode definitely suits your voice very well. I've considered the NT-1A in the past. I use the Studio Electronics SE-1. My set up is a tad complicated as I have 128 input channels networked over multiple interfaces, the path from the mic is pretty clean though. I think I need to invest more time in to improve the source material by just singing more and strengthening my voice. If I can get it to sound half as good as your recordings I'd be very happy. Thanks again. 😁
It's been so much fun - thanks again. I'll be looking out for you next FAWM.
Rich thank you for your comments and encouragements throughout Feb as I was uploading- it was much needed and they often came just at the right time!
Hi there.. thanks.. was kind of hoping no one would listen to that song.. agree.. didn't do a good job of recording this.. not sure how you do it... Do you use a daw? I had one mic for both vocal and acoustic guitar and didn't position it well I think.. ideally I guess I need a line in to the guitar or two mics. Yeah sorry it was just rough recording late at night and I wasn't confident with if! Thanks though for commenting.. hope you are well and enjoying March? Spring getting underway here in London though still chuffing cold!
In CRASH he kind of slammed into my band logo and engine caught on fire! Speed kills!!
Enjoyed my listens, some great humour, some clever lyrics, a bit iof absurdity all amongst some lovely guitar work! Thx for sharing! I wont miss you next time, you are on my watch list!
Thx mate i will get onto yours soon . You missed the best guitar one! Thats the very first one ha ha!
Try any 6 that are not tagged skirmish
Hi - totally up for Tit4Tat - I've got 7 to trade if you are up for it. Congrats on making it to 14 - any you would recommend, or shall I just roll the dice? 😁
Sure. How about 6! Will do them my evening! About 8 hours away
Yes the pup is Penny. Circumstances were real. Middle of the night letting her out to do her business. The number of cars is the typical number for this coal train according to a newspaper article on the topic in the local paper. Same with the load per car. I didn’t make the numbers up and when I said 110 car coal train aloud, I knew I had to use it as the lyrical backbone.
ps. and so do your songs! 😀
It gets better the longer you keep coming back. 😀
And don't forget 50/90 on July 3.
Glad FAWM has been a positive experience for you!
Fawm started in 2004 with just four people. I joined in 2006 when it was about 70 people, i think? , the neat thing was that everyone pretty much listened to everyone else's material so it was one big family. The next year also had that intimate feel, and after that it started growing at a fast rate. Bandcamp is a great site for musicians to put up whole albums, either for free download or 'pay what you want' or a specific price if you wanted. You can add artwork, lyrics, etc too and I find it alot more user friendly and easier then soundcloud. My existing bandcamp page (it'll take you to my most recent album, but earlier ones are on the side panel and click 'more releases'- theres like 12 of them!) is at https://mikeskliar.bandcamp.com/
Oh, I love talking process. It's one of the reasons I love FAWM so much. I cannot write a song without recording it. And in recording it, I strive every time to learn that litle bit more about how to make things sound good.
This year was a big year for working with other people's vocals and really trying to get the right balance of EQ, delay and reverb to let my collaborators shine. There are some tracks where I feel I just didn't get it right and one or two where I punch the air 😉
So yeah, if ever you want to chat about recording, I'll be there...
thanks again for all the comments- wanted to let you know that i'm putting the 'best' of my 2021 fawm songs (with a little polishing, etc) together as an album I'll upload to bandcamp soon. (I have a thread about these projects on the forum, you should do this yourself if you haven't, its a great way to figure out 'what songs work' and get to the next level, plus you get a nice souvenir/time capsule of the whole thing ...
I'm so impressed with your work here. You maybe get the sense that your style is not one that I would not normally listen to, or try to write, but man, you are the MASTER of the sweet little meloidic riff in a fingerpicking pattern. I love those skills! 😁
Compared to the two other collabs it really had a different feel. And it was a relatively shorter piece. I took 2-3 days and tried to come up with something. I really was at a loss for words (unusual for me) so decided to use the KISS (keep it simple stupid) method, and just let the groove carry the thing, punctuated with some quirky word imagery. I do like the ethos that less is more and all that. It’s really fun to play with!
Re: Identification. I actually am pretty pleased with the overall sound quality here too. And I'm not really sure how long I worked on it. Somewhere between 8 and 12 hours I think. But it helped it started with a skirmish, cause it always (the few times I did a skirmis) makes me focus on 'proving' I can write a song in an hour. I really can't but it helped me to not overthink too much, which is a bad habit of mine. All in all I worked at least 6 hours on it. What helps (working in a DAW) is to have a template that proved its value before, sound wise, with settings and plugins that suit your style.
Re: Ancient times. I got a lot of samples stored in my computer. Lots of drum samples, but also samples of, in this case, steel guitar samples. Someone once has played and recorded those for general use, and I just tried if chords in those various samples corresponded to my chords. I had to slice parts to make that happen. Ideally, of course I would have a steel guitar myself and I'd be a great steel guitar player..but I'm not..never played one 😀
Hey, yes, sorry, I had a bit of a productive month!
I woul dbe very happy if you picked anything with a heart on it, or one of the ones with fewer comments. I try to be sensible with tags soo, marking the difference between the metal and non-metal tunes for folk whjo have a preference 😉
And I'll be back for a few more of yours in a bit - I really enjoyed them!
Re: Lay lo-fi. I had a guest over at my apartment and we discussed how technology, however unevitable, is not all in line with the days that used to be with VHS tapes, cassette desks and record players. Lay lo is also a life style to me, taking part in society yet not too much. I got the idea to combine the two (lay lo/ lo-fi) cause there is an overlap in the two. The song 'Handsome' isn't actually as lo-fi sounding as I thought it did. So I understand you didn't understand why I said what I said 😀
When it comes to Surf Jerk, don't mean to be cynical but sometimes, even after a very long time, change happens. Fights aren't always physical altercations, they can often be differences in opinion to parenting, views of how you plan for your future, or why she needs to have 186 cats in the house. These are all just fictional examples of course. LOL
Thanks for the talks and the favors! See you around.
@richaaaay Thanks for taking the time to listen to all my fawm 2021 entries! I really appreciate it. I took your advice and listened to Marco and a song with a heart attached to it. I see this is your first, so welcome! I'll listen to more of your songs later and I'll answer your questions too!
Just finished Marco it was a delight. I’m a mole person. I don’t leave the house lol 85% accurate anyways. So whenever u wanna trade some tunes I’ll be here in Indiana practicing so I don’t feel like a damn fool when we do something lol
Glad to have “bumped” into you on the digital highway, traveler!
O if u get bored before next year, feel free to reach out I’m active all year and just signed up for 5090.
I look forward to future collaboration! I really enjoyed your tunes! You’re a great player man. U got the licks and know when to use em. Thanks for titting tats with me! I’m still working on the phrasing there.
Hey thanks for listening! On surf jerk @electrocelte wrote the lyrics but he said it was fictional accounts. I laid the basic track drums bass guitars, @djtjb played some super cool key parts then we sent it over to Jeff who wrote the lyrics and added some more keys for the 2nd half. Everyone on this track really helped make a buncha parts work well together
Haven’t heard much on Surf jerk desensitized by design, and loiter world but !!!epic!!! stardust and don’t breathe seem to be fawmer faves
Whatever works for me lol and ya I was planning on checking your collabs out next!
Sorry I’m zero help.
Absolutely! Let's do it! 😃
Will visit tomorrow. I look forward to it!
Tit4tat indeed my friend
Sure! I'm in 4that 😀
I’m glad you liked my not so blues. The “pauses” between verses actually have some bass notes—when I mixed it, I set the bass too low. Novice on the multi track recording stuff. It was great hearing your tunes, and I look forward to hearing you next year.
Thanks - “punching down“ and “cosmic dance of the human animal“ are probably two fairly “guitar heavy“ songs you could check out. I will check out Marco and another one of yours later tonight!
Hi. I have listened to many of Lizbrinkers songs, and she has generously given me advice about how she records. I am not tech savvy, started playing music 5 or so years and started writing last year about this time. But I am enjoying the ride here on FAWM. I didn’t really know what to write songs about, so I wrote about my life experiences from young to now a great grandmother.
Corn as high as an elephants eye is from the musical Oklahoma, as most of the references in Party Pieces are from stage musicals or well known plays.
I am learning things from this Tit4tat, by listening to music that I have never come across in my lifetime. It’s nice to hear.
Thanks for listening to my songs.
Congrats on hitting 14! It looks like you had a great month!
Thank you for your kind comments on my songs!
I'm happy to talk about the origins of FAWM anytime. 😀 (The trick is usually getting me to shut up. 😀 )
oh set the pan back to middle on the tracks if you could.
put the mic in your face closer. 😀
It won't be too pretty but if you could send me 4 tracks of any song you've done this way, vocal, rhythm guitar, leadguitar, bass. All equal lengths so I can line em up easily in my DAW, I'll send you back an MP3 and it might ring a bell, light a fire.... let's see.
My email is on my profile. Send 4 seperate emails, one for each track if the files are super big.
so there's nothing in the middle to hold you up... think on that a little bit... get closer to the mike, project through it to the listener maybe... step by step, you'll work it out. Maybe I can help a bit, but your vocal tone, lovely guitar style and conveyance of ideas would benefit. Pleased to make your aquaintance, my new friend. ....
Ok, I think we're 4 for 4 anyway right now. We'll do the other 3 later or tomorrow with pleasure. Drums? depends. I have an electronic kit, or I program, or I loop, samples, or all of the above. Sometimes there's more dedicated drum tracks on my songs than vocals. LOL. I like me some boom cha boom 😀
oh and welcome, as well, to FAWM from me! 😀
I tried to be helpful and nice, regardless of past history. From his first post on Valentines Day, it was pretty clear he didn't get FAWM and was a complete jerk. Don't know if you saw that exchange, but it got really ugly towards a lot of people. All because he was mad that the site was pink and he had a heart profile for one day. "FAWM doesn't deserve my songs" hahaha - ok! (most of that thread got deleted by the mods)
At least he inspired a song! 😉
Dig your style! - Rschel Garlin
Thanks. And, yes, Idaho is pretty nice. Lots and lots of people moving here. Have fun making music.
First FAWM?!? Wow, you really got the hang of this place! Great music and I'll be back for more, I am sure. I really appreciated all the nice comments throughout, as well. Welcome and sure hope to see you again next year!! I'll be here all March too - As always, I listened to and commented on tons of songs, but hardly scratched the surface!
thank you so much for your comments this FAWM they have been really motivating and your last comment now has brought a tear to my eye. thank you so much. i will get round to some more listening of your stuff. commenting continues for a bit so stick around! glad you had a great first FAWM and congratulations on your WIN! first time yay! 😀
I have enjoyed listening to your songs too. I am glad that we can continue listening in March. I have only skimmed the surface. By the way, “fudge nuggets” was in my Expletives song.
Thanks for the comment on 'Fades to Gray'!
Ahhh! Thanks for all the kind words this year! Wishing I wouldn’t have bugged out the past few weeks but, such is life... definitely looking forward to hearing more from you as a catch up on listening!
So glad you enjoyed the insanity of the House Party. We tend to be a fun bunch to hang out with! 😉
Thanks for your comments and for enjoying my crazy song/collab.
Thanks man, really kind words, hugely appreciated! There's no way I'm forgetting our 2022 collab! And stay in touch on Soundcloud if you can - remember, I'm following you too*...
*this sounds a lot creepier than I intended.
Rich, There is a FAQ (which I admittedly haven't looked at recently), located here: https://fawm.org/help/
To answer your question about March 1, you are right. You won't be able to post songs anymore. You will still be able to edit your song posts. (I believe some Fawmers will create song posts as holders so they can upload their demos after the closing bell.)
People will still be able to comment on songs, and chat in the forums. Though, it is common for activity on the site to drop off starting March 1st. (Some people need to deal with real-life stuff they've been putting off for a month; some people need a break from FAWM and songwriting.) Let me know if you have any other questions. 😀
Thank you for the lovely comments on our songs. It means a lot 😊
Thanks Rich! Really kind words. Next year, if we make it to next year... do you fancy some sort of collab? I’m thinking blues, lots of guitars... 😀
whaaat, you know Tim?? So glad to make your FAWM acquaintance! I have been an even worst citizen than this year, but have so appreciated your comments on various songs of mine and from the first one of yours I listened to here I am sure I am going to enjoy all that you have posted as I pivot into listening mode.
If I could play guitar like you!!! You make it sound effortless ugh
Thank you.. feeling a tad heartbroken having let it all out in that song.. and my sister texted to say it has her bawling 😭😭
HI! Welcome to FAWM! 😀
So, I saw on Eric's page that you were curious about how FAWM got started. Some of the basics were covered in the forum thread, "I Remember My First FAWM......" https://fawm.org/forums/topic/10956/#c230777
You can skip to the comments by @burrsettles, @ericdistad, and me. 😀
I’m glad you enjoyed Downstream. I hope your snow is melting like ours is, I don’t think I’m going to make over to shovel.
Glad you liked "The Faerie Ring" Thanks for your positive comments.
didn't click that hph was Mr Hamburger - i really love his work - my comment re John Prine was about the number of people taken by covid - john deserves the songs - so do the other 499999 (+ now i guess) - it (covid) did not 'just magically go away'
RE: FAWMBLUES Hey Richaaaay!!! Thx so much for taking the time to listen and leave a comment on my track! I appreciate you! 😀
