Artist Bio

Influences:   I have a kind of folk-pop sensibility so artists like Ed Sheeran and Maggie Rogers are currently strong influences. I appreciate songs with strong lyrics and a little bit of poetry to them.

Hi everyone, I'm back. FAWM #12 for me!

I am going to try a few different things this year. I can usually get to 14 songs and that is the plan again this year. But maybe this year, do something different with every song.

This year's FAWMStock brought the unexpected opportunity to start working with fellow FAWMer Beth Gray (gbg2016). We were strumming together at the end of one of the nights and we realized hey, we might have something here. Beth has worked with several bands and ensembles over the years. This would be my first songwriting and performing pairing! Stay tuned-I think we are up to something good! This is our first project, completed for the Great Cover Song Challenge sponsored last month by the Worcester Telegram and Gazette; https://michaelgutierrez-may.bandcamp...

Oh, about that Cover Song Challlenge. Here's the story and pics and videos: https://tinyurl.com/t6n23uh

And now, on with the FAWM for 2020!

Hey Michael, thanks for getting back to me. The way I think about that word (and any word, really), is: If the pronunciation flows, and the word is in my personal lexicon (I didn't cull a dictionary or thesaurus for a word I'd never used before), then it's fair game. Like, there isn't another word that means "grotesquery" that has flow, fits the melody, and isn't also a word built to gross people out (e.g. https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/grot...), or would imbue the statement with too much melodrama (e.g. "macabre").

It also makes me think of the American release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, when the publisher swapped Philosopher's for Sorcerer's. A writer doing the job right shouldn't be distracted from expressing exactly what they need to express because someone in the audience might need to look up a word. When I was a kid, the best comics were the ones that were peppered with terms that were new to me.

Anyway, that's where I'm coming from. If you have further perspective, I appreciate having my assumptions challenged. There's always something new to consider 😀

Thank you for the constructive crit on Still Life. Is it that "grotesqueries" sounds awkward in the flow of the song? Is it my enunciation of it?

  • @cynthiawolff  Mar 7

Man that sonG writing challenge seems super cool..
The group looks like a gas...

Great to listen to your stuff - see you next year!

Thanks for the compliment on my Tan Van version. So many people took on that challenge and we listened to them until the last day!

Hi Mike, Thanks for listening and commenting! I'll return the favor today!

  • @bjunker  Feb 9

Thanks for the comments! I agree "If I Forget You" could be elaborated more. Thinking about an additional stanza with the same structure, or maybe a different middle section, and these stanzas become freaking material at the beginning it the end...

  • @tamsnumber4  Feb 9

Again, thank you, miss Suzanne and she is wonderful as well, I suffer so many confidence issues, that really means lots to me...

  • @tamsnumber4  Feb 8

Thank you so much, that made me feel much better!!

  • @steffan  Feb 3

Hey! That theremin sound was based off of a synth bass sound that's built into logic. I just did some altering of it to make it weird and unwieldy! I dunno if it fits, but once I made the patch I couldn't NOT use it.

  • @frozenlonesome Feb 2

Thanks for listening and commenting on Discretion.
