Influences: Indigo Girls, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris
Never written anything until FAWM 2020 (nor since) Still terrified of being crap at this after having spent years around songwriters who seemed to judge other songwriters quite harshly.
Got to 14 last year in name only as a couple of songs appeared twice and one was really written before FAWM. Not written at all in the last 12 months but lots of snippets ready to turn into songs.
I got divorced, moved house, moved jobs, moved cities and haven't been able to make any new friends yet due to stupid covid. So here's hoping FAWM will bring some joy and much needed Va-Va-Voom.
Pronouns: she/her/whatever is respectful.

Thanks for listening and for the kind words about And the Journey Begins. ๐
It would be a pleasure (a collab next year) ๐
Iโd really like that! โบ๏ธ
Sorry for my getting the credit wrong - as someone in my family sometimes phrased it, I must have had a โfunny five minutesโ! I loved your song, anyway - well done with FAWM this year ๐
Thanks for responding to my FAWM Crash message. It's so hard for all of us, and especially as we've gone through such a high energy experience as this past month. Take care of yourself and know this community is still here!
Thanks for the comment on my collab with Geof!
Glad you enjoyed my "Salome and Poor John" - At FASWM I also wrote another song inspired by the Van Gogh "Self Portrait" in the Rijk's museum.
Totally agree! Keep on keeping on โ
Hey, just read your comment in the fawm crash forum post. Sending you a fawm hug from a fellow UK based lockdowner. I so get what youโre saying. More than ever, fawm has been like a sanctuary this year, a place to be with others and meet and engage with new people without thought for how close youโre standing. The reality of what we return to is indeed a crash.
Thanks very much for the comment. I appreciate it.
yeah I was pretty proud of those lyrics! Corrine Lucy really turned them into something lovely & special. I don't have the musicianship to do the same but I love to write. Fun fact 14th and Colfax don't even intersect I have no idea why I called the song that.
it was me who wrote the lyrics to that song you were asking about on that thread. just happened to see it tonight. glad you enjoyed them! sorry you had to go through a wild goose chase
thank you so much for your kind comment on 'Tongue Tied,' it really means a lot! hoping you've had a very positive FAWM
I've had my love affair with folk music, it started and ended with the electric folk movement in the 1960s/70s. I would always call Fairport Convention's Liege and Lief a masterpiece. Unfortunately I am 67 and have been a musician since my teens. That is plenty of time to notice how music repeats itself monotonously, to see the warning signs, and jump ship into new interesting fields. That is the position I speak from ๐
On 'My Tears'. Whilst it is moving to know you connected to it, I hope you are doing well. Wishing you the best ๐
Hey ๐. Thanks so much for listening and the positive , encouraging words on my piano song . I really appreciate it . Thanks heaps . Cheers ๐
Thank you for the kind comments and appreciation on 'My Tears' It's amazing how things going wrong can also serve one well, if one steps away from the eye of the storm ๐
Hey there, Marieke. Thanks so much for the tip on the weblink. I'll sort it now. I just couldn't work out what I was doing wrong. I've sent you a message via Messenger about a possible collaboration if you're interested.
Hi Marie... thank you for the kind words about my jazz attempt โThe Melting Snowโ. I really appreciate it. Thank you so much. I would have written sooner but the big Texas deep freeze hit me and my family pretty hard. Ironic huh. Since my song was about snow. We were without power for two days and worried about our pipes freezing/bursting the entire week. So glad thatโs over.
Thanks again for the kind words.
Thanks for hosting today! Really feeling the FAWM love this weekend!
Thanks for hosting that skirmish. And I forgot to mention, congratulations on the homecoming of your new furry friend!! (So I guess thanks for hosting that Skirmish too??) ๐<3
great! i gave it a try.
Thanks for the feedback on This Time if Night. It was a lot of fun to work on
Thank you!
Thanks so much for your thoughts on "I'm Gonna Love You Enough" I really appreicate the feedback!
Thank you for the heads up about the comments on 'Catastrophe' it did me good to read the positive comments.
Thank you for your kind words on my lyrics.
Thank you for your comments on Take a Ride. Yes totally needs a wind machine! Ha!
Ha, you made a comment in the forums - about not liking Sax - itโs only good on jazz and I donโt like jazz - I thought it was funny and couldnโt resist.
How can you not like jazz??!!!!
Hey, I might have to postpone our collab, since it didn't really get started yet. People have been sending me stuff for collabs like crazy. Hopefully, we'll have time to do it, but I'm just writing to let you know, that it's gonna be tight. ๐
Thanks for your encouragement, Marieke. I had a bit of an interal editor overload lately. Hyper-critical self never a good place to be. I've got some new songs started so will be uploading again soon. Your songs are sounding brilliant.
Thanks for you comments on Crows Are Liars. We appreciated it! -Suzanne
Thanks for listening to Existential Crisis! I LOVED writing a topic that's typically distressing into a happy, carefree melody, so I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Really flattering! I honestly have no real idea what I'm doing. But that's part of why I love making music. I never know what's going to happen! Thanks again!
Thanks for the sweet comment on Make My Own Way Home (no I don't think anyone has compared me to her, but as a Canadian, that's the highest praise to date!)
Thank you for the kind words on my latest tune! Much appreciated!
Thank you for your lovely comments Marieke - yes i think they're verses or maybe a double bridge, i don't know the terminology ha! Fingers crossed someone will set it to music - i'll let you know ๐ Also i just checked back on your collab 'catastrophe' it sounding extra beautiful with the cello - definitely a keeper!
Hi Marieke, thank you for letting me contribute 'remotely' to your song with @celineellis. Recording this was a valuable learning experience for me as well as being a lot of fun.
Have a great rest of FAWM!
I'm so glad you found "Good Enough" helpful! I figured if it was something I needed to hear, I probably wasn't the only one. ๐
Absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder, and along that line of thinking I suppose I've now stunted that growth with my presence. Nevertheless, thanks for thinking of me.
-Nic
Dear Marieke. I would love to contribute a cello solo for your song Catastrophe.
I guess you mean the section between about 1:55 and 2:25. Would you like me to send you a wav file? I don't know your set up, so perhaps there's another way of doing this that would work better for you - just let me know.
Thanks Marieke. I do like to drop the occasional emotional bomb. If you can't make music from your own dysfunction, what the hell is it there for! Haha!
Ah, see, I speak Afrikaans, which is a little bit like Dutch, so that's probably why I can hear it.
Yo are you originally from the UK? Because with a name like Marieke I could be projecting an accent onto you.
I guess I asked for that, didn't I?
@mariekevinkmusic Hello fellow sea swimmer! Thanks so much for your kind comments and top tip! (trying to learn slowly!) I have the fear of songwriting too, this seems like a nice community though.
Thank you very much for your comment, as it hit the mark and was just what I needed tonight. Cheers!
The "Safety in silence" section is stunningly good - I'd have milked it for all it was worth, but you're right that it's more powerful for only happening once. I love the tone and delivery of it. Am I getting across how good I thought that was?
Thank you very much for your comment on โItโs a New Day.โ. And I love your profile photo! ๐
I can do anything. I could play a bit of acoustic guitar, or some keyboards stuff. I can sing!
Hey so you wanna collab? I'll be sad if you say no. ๐๐๐
Thanks Marieke, that's really nice. I am definitely aiming for the full 14 though. It would make it the best February i've probably ever had (creatively anyway). You must be pleased with your first offering, it is a beaut.
It is genuinely amazing how it unlocks so much. Even just listening to other peoples tunes is enough to inspire you to look at things differently. I'm loving it. You 'fangirl' all you like, haha. I'm not sure i'll be able to keep up the pace all month but it has already been so productive.
@mariekevinkmusic Thanks for the comment Marieke, I did wonder if I was using it correctly. Thanks for introducing me to it. Brilliant site!
Hi Marie...thanks for your welcoming post! Have a wonderful month of inspiration and Va-Va-Voom!
did I say that? lol.. never written a country song lol.. lets do it! please email me (kristiab<at>me.com and weโll take it from there) ๐๐
Marie, thank you for your lovely comment. I'm looking forward to a creative start to this year. Perhaps we'll get to work together on something. ๐ Wishing you a glorious FAWM. ๐
Thanks for the nice welcome! Look forward to hearing what you write this year.
It is great to see you back... I'm looking forward to hearing your creations! ๐
Have a great FAWM!
Thanks ๐ yeah always up for collabs if you fancy it during FAWM just hit me up
I somehow managed to miss your FAWM output last year - but just checked out your soundcloud and thereโs some really great stuff!! Can definitely hear the Joni Mitchell influence, who Iโm a massive fan of. Looking forward to seeing what you create this year, good luck ๐
Good luck to you to, even as an ex-midlander! ๐
Hey there! So nice to hear from you! Looking forward to hearing your new songs as they emerge, too!
hey! itโs you! wanna write a song?
Yeay Marieke! Let's do this! Thanks for the push ๐
Lets do this!!!!
๐ You're a better person that me!! hahaha
Well at this point even if I lock up and can't do anything come February I'll at least have some "interesting" if nothing else musical tracks I've been doing one or two a day since the start of this month. Trying to not start writing any lyrics yet. I'll probably take some of my favorites snippets from Jamuary and at least splice them together in at least one big long hot epic mess! So fawm at least can't be a bust for me haha. I'm actually just as excited to just listen this year. I have a feeling its going to be a great one.
Heya! Ready to hear more of your stuff! Have a spiffy FAWM. And you didn't name the ex, so that's about as kind as you need to be. ๐
Just confessing to how much I got a laugh out of your I remember my first fawm post! Don't take it wrong, I tend to get a laugh out of most things. I'll celebrate the fact you got to 14 and she didn't with ya!!! Cheers!! and kudos for turning something heart-wrenching into something meaningful, and not feeling the need to name names......she knows what she did ๐ and cheers to a great month ahead of some va-va-voom!
Hi Marieke... read your comment on the "I remember my first FAWM..."
(((hug)))
Listened to some of your songs on SoundCloud and... *sigh*
they are beautiful, tragic, powerful, desperately sad songs that are just amazing.
Hope this note finds you well. This little fawmling is looking forward to hearing what you put together this year.
Hey Marieke, hope you get some inspiration, va-va-voom or whatever sparks some creativity soon.
You're a sea swimmer? I miss my Nieuwjaarsduik in the north sea.
Have a fine FAWM
