Artist Bio

Influences:   Indigo Girls, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris

Never written anything until last year (I've written 4 songs in a year...). Terrified of being crap at this after having spent years around songwriters who seemed to judge other songwriters quite harshly.

Week 1:
I can't believe I have 5 songs uploaded. 3 collaborations, 3 entirely new songs I can perform at gigs, positive feedback and the urge to write every day. Most importantly, I have learned I can just write something and not be too worried about it being good or bad.

Week 2:
Not going as furiously as week 1. To be expected I guess, if only because I've gone back to work. Now have 8 uploaded songs in total, including another lovely collab and a sure fire hit 😉. Week 3 has 2 days off so surely another couple of songs to be had from that.

Week 3:
Mixed bag. Did a skirmish so I squeezed an extra song out of myself. Finished a collab which brings my total to 10. I'm starting to chase the numbers now and wondering if there is ANYTHING I have written that I could 'legally' include so I get to 14...A week of night shifts coming up so maybe some opportunities there.

Week 4:
Night shifts are rubbish for writing. Did collabs, which was lovely, but created nothing serious myself. Did not sit down to write anything serious, didn't even make a start. Did do skirmishes that may have given me some ideas to expand upon.

Lessons from FAWM: I write better under pressure OR when I have days to just sit down and do it. I cannot write when I have a spare hour here or there. This is progress because before FAWM, I had no idea I could write at all.

I am spending March commenting on songs. I have not commented enough during FAWM and I am grateful for everyone who has bothered with listening to my stuff. You will all be thanked and rewarded 😀

Thanks for the comment on "Holding Pattern" - I've now fixed the mix to bring up the vocals.

  • @scubed  Mar 14

Thanks very much for your generous comment on “The Copperhead”!

  • @rosieposy8  Mar 11

Thank you so much for your kind comment on my song xx

  • @audrey  Mar 8

Hi! Thank you for your kind comment on my piece Don't Get Caught. I appreciate it.

  • @katmtl Mar 6

Hello! Thank you for your comment on “Naughty”! I’m so glad you enjoyed the song we made!❤️❤️😎😎

  • @gslade Mar 6

    *wipes brow*

Ok, that's 14 out of 14. You had a really strong year. Impressive. No duds in there. It was a pleasure. Have a great 2020 and see you for FAWM 2021!

  • @kristian  Mar 6

I used to do 50/90 but summer is usually quite busy. Now with the corona virus I’m not even sure we will be travelling at all this summer so let’s see how the world looks in July 😀👍

  • @gslade Mar 6

Okay..half way there...I must break and go handle some worky stuff..

    /ArnoldVoice - "I'll be Bach"

  • @gslade Mar 5

4 songs in to your set. I laughed because it's hard to imagine you being into the music I make, since it's worlds apart from your own sound. But I also know I love nearly every genre so odds are other folks are the same.

  • @gslade Mar 5

Starting on your set list next!

  • @gwyn1234  Mar 5

I'm not all depends on ifs buts and maybes...but hopefully...

  • @emkaydeebee  Mar 4

Oh wow, that’s high praise indeed! Thank you @mariekevinkmusic, I’m honoured! 😊

  • @gwyn1234  Mar 3

Thanks for listening and saying such nice things about the Wild Nights collab and the mandolin instrumental...I'm not precious about it btw if you ever do want to add words to it...I'm sure you would do a great version...anyway I hope you had a fab FAWM!

  • @zecoop  Mar 3

I think your name is beautiful... so I am happy you kept it. And glad you are here at FAWM! 😀

  • @zecoop  Mar 3

Honest admission, though........ I was one of the people who was sure it was Marie Kevin Music. 😉
But seriously, you have a wonderful style and fantastic songs. I have really enjoyed them and will absolutely be back for more.

  • @zecoop  Mar 3

I like that it can go a few ways and my dad definitely had to fire a number of people in the many years he worked in human resources. 😀

  • @zecoop  Mar 3

Hey there... Thanks for listening! Fired is actually about the current US political situation. Sometimes my dad writes goofy songs and sometimes he gets serious. I never know what he's going to write next. 😀

  • @judypie  Mar 1

  • @vivalarayna Feb 29

You're welcome and what a generous offer! I'd be happy to give it a crack just as soon as I get to the finish line.

  • @vivalarayna Feb 29

Thanks so much for your comments on "Chronic"! Yes, there's always someone telling you to stuck garlic where it doesn't belong. 🙄 I'm glad (???) this evoked a strong emotion. Isn't our goal to make people feel? 😂 Oddly enough, while annoying, this is the stuff I can joke and write about. There's actually a lot of medical trauma from the doctor side of things because I really do "confound every of them" and, well, it goes poorly. I'm sure you see a fair share of that as a nurse.

  • @metalfoot  Feb 29

Fair enough. Thanks SO much for reading (and hopefully we'll get some music on there in March too!)

  • @metalfoot  Feb 29

Really just a math observation: csc(x)= 1/[sin(x)] so between cnidaria and me we came up with all sorts of nerdy observations of the sketch of the combined graph and I recast it as a love song lyric. csc(x) = sin (x) wherever |x|=1

  • @berni1954  Feb 29

Glad you liked my "Keep Your Distance". I hope I didn't give the idea that I think women are frigid. Far from it. However, I do think my protagonist is fed up with being hit on by lounge lizard types like her antagonist. 😉

  • @hornesgiftshop  Feb 26

    Hi - it's downloadable now.

  • @hornesgiftshop  Feb 26

Of course you can sing it! I was thinking of shaving it down to a manageable 4 mins, but if you can remember the whole thing...

  • @sapient  Feb 26

Top! Jij zit nu ook op mijn watchlist... En ik zie je straks in Londen, toch? 😁

  • @hornesgiftshop  Feb 26

    Oh cool - thanks.

  • @hornesgiftshop  Feb 26

Hi Marieke, I just wanted to make sure that you're ok with this song being posted. I used your name to make two names for a silly country song. No insult was intended but if you don't like it I'm happy to delete it - it's not one of the real keepers. All the best, Jon.

  • @alyxanderjames  Feb 24

Thank you so much for your kind words about my tarot project! I am really enjoying your songs as well - I think you’re turning out some high quality stuff, and as Brad said below, it’s especially impressive that they’re early efforts! You’re doing great. 😀 Cheers!

  • @bradbrubaker  Feb 24

I'm impressed with your tunes and the fact that they are early songwriting efforts. Congrats!

  • @berni1954  Feb 23

I see you live in Northampton. That was the last place I lived in the UK. I now live in Catalunya. I used to teach Drama at Kinsthorpe Upper.
Is the Northampton Folk club still going. A great, friendly, supportive place back in my day. Indeed, Northampton was a great place to break into the folk world back then. I used to go to a different club and do floor spots almost every night for weeks without repeating a club. Led to lots of gigs and a few festivals. Gold3n age...

  • @toms Feb 23

TY for your kind comments! 😀

  • @scubed  Feb 23

Thanks so much for your lovely comment on “Stranger”! I really appreciate it.

  • @smudge  Feb 23

@mariekevinkmusic Hi my pleasure! Im a real newbie at production so please let me know if you want me to try lol! Cheers, Smudgie

  • @keithcuts  Feb 23

There’s usually a Sunday 3pm hosted by another fawmer I’ll be working at that time

  • @sheslin Feb 22

Hey thanks for the feedback on You'll Never Make It Without Me. I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and share you thoughts. I will check out that Dolly Parton song - I know a number of her songs but not that one - thanks!!

  • @tawny249  Feb 22

Hey, I don't bother making comments unless I mean them. 😁 I am quite impressed. Please keep writing! 😀

  • @davewermers Feb 21

Thanks for the listen and comment on "I'll always have time for you".

  • @bronnyd  Feb 19

Hey Love your songs! Can't remember how I found you here but glad I did! Love your country song and all of your lyrics. I can only listen to the songs that are download mp3 and really want to hear Forgiveness. Can you post it for download? Still ramping up on how to use this site 😀 I have a MacBook using safari so maybe that's it....anyhow, your songs are great!!

  • @judypie  Feb 19

Ah man, how much do I wanna drive through the South of France in black and white in my convertible with a beautiful silk scarf wrapped around my head?! SO much. I’m glad it invoked such a feeling 😀

  • @gwyn1234  Feb 17

Thanks for keeping me up to speed re: Whichever The Wind Blows...if you find the time then great but go with wherever your muse takes you...

  • @emkaydeebee  Feb 16

Thanks so much for your comment on ‘Baby Group’! I have more to write for the musical for what happens next for them... school holidays here for the next week is going to hold me up a bit though 🤨

  • @toms Feb 15

This is the best place on the planet for real, authentic support from fellow artists. 😀

  • @oddbod  Feb 14

Hi, I have some lyrics which I think would sound great sung acapella with your wonderful voice. Would you consider a collab? Absolutely no pressure at all but I will email them if you do want to take a look. Cheers

  • @stephenwordsmith Feb 13

Thank you for checking out the song and commenting - if you do feel inspired to put it to music, I'd love to hear it, even if it doesn't turn out quite as you hoped (the lyrics didn't turn out quite as I hoped, but you still liked them 😀 )

  • @bractune Feb 13

Hey, thanks for the awesome feedback on my tune. I love what I am hearing from your are the real deal!

  • @deena  Feb 12

Thanks for your very kind message. It's inspiring to listen to the songs here. I love the creative world we share and it's cheering me up. It's a nice place to be. And your songs are a real pleasure!

  • @antlion Feb 11

Thanks for trying to check my song out! I think the site I host it on is a little unstable to be honest, but it seems to be working now. 😀

  • @writeandwrong  Feb 10

You're welcome. I truly hope you do something with it post-FAWM!

  • @barbara  Feb 10

Oops. Just made it public. 😊

  • @barbara  Feb 10

Well yes, I *would* be interested in a link to the original song, not to judge how derivative or not, but maybe to understand better and take inspiration from your process. I love process videos of drawing/painting, etc. It’s very educational. So, if you get a minute, please do!

  • @sbs2018 Feb 7

Thank you for your wise words on my poem.

  • @guatecoop  Feb 7

I guess that you DID get connected with the community! That’s awesome! You “get it” now. I’m so glad for you

  • @zecoop  Feb 6

Wow... welcome to FAWM! I totally enjoyed all of your songs. I am so glad you've had a great experience here. It's my 10th FAWM and this place changed my musical outlook in such a positive way. it's the best musical community I have ever seen. Have fun and I'm looking forward to more from you. 😀

  • @scubed  Feb 5

Thanks so much for your lovely comment on “Jupiter is Rising in the Morning”! I am indeed an old folkie, and Joan Baez and Judy Collins were my role models.

I hope you have a wonderful FAWM! This is such a friendly, supportive, and incredibly inspiring community. (I’ve been a songwriter for a long time. I realized a back that it’s a waste of time to pay attention to those songwriters who delight in savaging other writers’ work - constructive criticism is great, but destructive criticism says more about the critic than it does about the song under review.)

  • @gwyn1234  Feb 3

Hi @mariekevinkmusic ...please do...that would be great! Thank you.

  • @complexissimple  Feb 1

If you're looking for harsh judgey criticism, you've come to the wrong place.

I'd say, don't be hard on yourself about being too literal/not adventurous enough, because I see one of two things happening
    1. You write a few more songs, get more comfortable with the basics, and start branching out into more adventurous territory organically once you're ready, from a solid foundation
    2. You lean into it and develop the niche of literal songs with simple/same chord progressions, refining those techniques, which is just as impressive (maybe more so) when perfected - anyone can write a simple song, but how many people can write a GREAT simple song?

Anyway, I went and listened to your first song post, and you've got nothing to worry about, either way.

  • @helenseviltwin  Feb 1

"Certainly Invocal-feels in some of them" - High praise indeed!

  • @deena  Jan 28

Welcome! Looking forward to hearing your songs.

  • @tawny249  Jan 27

Welcome to the happy place! 😀 What everyone else has said. This community is the best.

  • @brownium  Jan 23

I think you're going to like it here. 😀

There's nothing wrong with being adventurous with chords, but there's nothing wrong with sticking to the tried and true, either:

  • @metalfoot  Jan 19

Based on your bio, I can't think of a better place for you to learn and develop as a songwriter. Welcome! I hope you have a good year!

  • @alyxanderjames  Jan 19

Welcome to FAWM! I’ve found it to be a lovely, encouraging place. I hope you have a great time!

  • @snoozin  Jan 19

Welcome to FAWM! Hope you have a wonderful month filled with songwriting and fun in this awesome community!

  • @fuzzy  Jan 14

You've come to the right place! FAWM is an excellent and totally supportive environment!

  • @guatecoop  Jan 14

Welcome! I hope that you have a great FAWM experience and get connected with the community!

  • @rayboneor  Jan 13

You're going to love FAWM. It is a massively friendly and encouraging space. Indeed, veterans and virgins have been known to hook up and make music together. [I've maintained my virgin status here for the last 8 or 9 years 😀]

  • @nancyrost  Jan 2

Glad you're here, and I think you'll find plenty of songwriters who offer friendly encouragement and constructive feedback. Welcome!
