Influences: On my heavy rotation the last little bit: Jamila Woods, Tank and the Bangas, Big Thief, Michael Kiwanuka, Janis Ian, Joni Mitchell, Lana Del Rey, the Go-Betweens, and "Hadestown" (original concept album and Broadway)
My name is Ashley Brewer. FAWM 2020 is FAWM number 5!! She/her/hers
Indie folky alt-country rock-ish singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. Guitar, piano, uke, mandolin, autoharp. Voice of an angel who's seen some sh*t.
Can't say production value will be much higher for FAWM this year, though I've been working on that a tad. Been REALLY working on my guitar playing *cough after literally over 20 years of playing guitar* -- I use a pick now! I practice! I DO SCALES! We'll see if y'all notice.
Where is my head at this time around? Late-stage capitalism, social justice, society is collapsing, the world is literally dying by fire, and OH LOOK ANOTHER PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN THE US. You know. THE USUAL. I'm really just hoping FAWM will keep me off of Twitter.
But also, I just finally read the Hobbit and am now tearing through the Lord of the Rings. The Shire is maybe an excellent example of anarcho-syndacalism? We'll work through this together! Other pop culture s*** will probably sneak in also. (Will "Pose" be my 2020 "Big Little Lies"? Stay tuned to find out!!)
I used to be in a band and am now solo and/so love to collab! Feel free to hit me up.
Happy to be a part of this wild community for another year!

I don't know whether you're stopping by here on occasion, but I wanted to thank you for introducing me to me new best friend, Justin. I'm on day three, just working through some beginner stuff. Justin makes me think I might actually learn to play the damned guitar one day
Re nic cage .... you get it. You do
Thank you for commenting on my song "The Naked Eye" and my collab song "This Time", I appreciate it!
Thank you for your lovely comments Ashley! 😁 Ammagonna check something of your materialz out when I get a minute!!
Thank you for your comment on It’s Too Late. I’m thinking of seeing if it would work as a reggae/ska song, just for fun. 😀
Ashley, did you consider going to FAWM Stock?
You are too kind! I look forward to you Anti and will also be listening to some of your other songs!
Cool! Just sent you an email 😀
Ashley, thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comments on Colton James and Who Do You Pray For? I am delighted with both songs and still kinda amazed that these flow out during FAWM! I'll be checking out more of your lovely work soon.
Have at it! (I refuse to apologize for adding my unique brand of silliness to FAWM this year!)
Thanks SO much for your kind words on my songs, as well. 😀
Let me encourage you (if you haven't) to listen to a bunch of the other Tan Van Man songs. They all have their own quirky charm!
Thanks for the comment - love your stuff! About that open mic, if you're interested, it's the 3rd Wednesday of the month, Castleburg Brewing; music starts at 6:30. Next one's on Feb 19 - would love to see you there!
Oh man I'm so glad I'm not the only one in the #iudsbecauseoftrump club--thank you for sharing. It made me really upset at the time, actually, because of all the insurance shit was horrible (the clinic I went to was covered by my insurance, the individual doctor wasn't, and because he wasn't the device wasn't either, so suddenly something "free" became VERY expensive, all completely elective and done out of fear). But I felt like I couldn't even bitch about the whole broken, fucked-up system on social media or even with some of the people close to me out of judgment over my decision, because they'd rather be seeing me making babies... people are complicated, the world sucks, at least I was in a place in my life where I could afford the surprise bill and still pay my rent. (Maybe I need to write another song about this, jeez)
Thanks for the very specific advice!!. Sounds like it could be a life-changer--and I mean that. FAWM actually changed my life, as I was no kind of "artist" or musician before I started taking part in these challenges. I feel that my very conception of myself has changed as I pursue this dumb thing a couple times a year
I'm inspired by your comments about the guitar. I've been "playing" for a long time--by which I mean that I shove the guitar into a closet until two weeks before FAWM starts. And I never use a pick, until FAWM starts and I realize how terrible my recordings sound without it. Any advice on how to up my game? Practice, I know...but anything place to start?
Oh Hey, -- thanks for that; I appreciate it. Thanks for have a listen, and listening 😀 hahhh!
Hi again, liking your 2 songs so far... Well done. I've not managed to post anything yet - too much work to do! Anyway is there a messaging system on FAWM? I don't think so. Happy to exchange emails or we could set up a WhatsApp? Let me know what works for you...
Hello! Thank you for coming by to comment! I'll have to come listen to Punxsutawney Phil later, but I just wanted to mention that we have a groundhog ceremony in the neighboring city of Sun Prairie and the groundhog bit the mayor of Sun Prairie on the ear yesterday and I'm very proud of him.
Love Palo Alto. Can’t wait to hear more! Sharp and witty and warm.
Hi there. Have a happy fawm. I see you got your first song. Congrats. I'll listen soon.
Hey Ashley! Good to see you too. Many happy FAWMz!
Hi Ashley, I see from the random collaborations thread we're paired... Looking forward to what we produce. Get in touch when and we'll find something to write about when FAWM starts...
YES! There you are!! Can't wait to hear what you create!!!
Yay!!! I can't wait to hear what you come up with. And the new guitar-with-pick action! I only finally got sort of comfortable this year with playing arpeggios with a pick instead of fingerpicked. I also discovered I had a pick preference last year for the first time in my life! I like the heavyweight Star picks (blue) because they're easier to keep a grip on, and it turns out I like playing with a heavy pick. https://www.amazon.com/Everly-30025-S...
Are you doing it this year? Have an amazing FAWM!
Happy FAWMing, if you're around this year I'll be listening.
