Influences: Americana, Country, Folk, Rock (John Prine, Neil Young, Jethro Tull, Gillian Welch)
2021 will be my 9th FAWM! I look forward to writing some songs and listening to those of all my favorite FAWMers!
Pronouns - he / him
I had a good year writing songs in 2020! I got 20 written at 50/90 and 18 at last FAWM.
I wrote a love song to all the knuckleheads who refuse to wear a mask for COVID protection called "Wear The F#cking Mask You F#cking Baby" https://www.johnstaplesmusic.com/50-90-2020/JohnStaples-WearTheFuck...
And I wrote a tribute to John Prine who we tragically lost to COVID-19 called "The Night We Lost John Prine" https://www.johnstaplesmusic.com/JohnStaples-TheNightWeLostJohnPrin...
I explored my rock side and still managed to crank a few country/bluegrass/Americana tunes.
Cobwebs and Rust
Love Song Fade Away
Real Love Remains
A few years ago I had a modicum of success producing and selling royalty free instrumental tracks. I stopped due to a lack of time but I have recently started up again. Below is a short video I created featuring 10 of my top tracks!
I live in the Chicago area, previously from the San Francisco Bay area and originally from western Kentucky! I love John Prine and Led Zeppelin, Hank Williams and Sia and Lorde and Eminem, Gillian Welch and Pink Floyd and Foo Fighters, New Grass Revival and Yes, Neil Young and Jethro Tull, Dolly and Taylor and Gaga and Amy and Madonna and Tammy, Willie and Waylon and Hank and Johnny and Merle and George, Elvis and Pearl Jam, the Jackson 5 and Michael, Prince and Jimi, the early Beatles and the later Beatles! There is very little music I don't like!
I use Reaper on Windows for my DAW. I record mostly with a Zoom H4n handheld digital recorder using its multi-track mode so I can easily record multiple tracks.
I play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, tenor guitar, baritone guitar, resonator guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and harmonica.

Okay I see a few people ask the same question and you lay it out beautifully in the forum. Thank you my dear!
John do you mean you screenshot your pages? I don't understand how you can save them. I have a pc. What's your trick? 😀
Thank you so much John for your kindness. Your comments are very inspiring for me. I admire your work and I'm grateful to you for your kind words.
Hey John, I don't think I can finish "Wrench in the work" before that site shuts down. If you want to catch a glimpse on how this could sound, there's a new instrumental version with real instruments up. Vocals may come someday post-FAWM.
Thank you for your wonderful comments on my song "I am Frankenstein", your thoughts are always greatly appreciated!!
Thanks again John. Nice of you to take the time to listen and comment, and I'm so glad you liked What Might Have Been. I like your music a whole lot too. 😀
Thank you so much John for your kind comments on timeless time.
Coming from you that always means a lot!
Mr. Staples...I will be catching up with your tunes this weekend.
Hey, thanks for the comment on Fable of the Fairies. I'm glad you liked it. 😀
Thank you for listening and for the kind words about "No Hurry". I appreciate it. 😀
Cheers John for your CD help and your bombastic comment on breaking free. Wish i had filmed myself making that it having started as me saying "I shall do an acoustic song based around a riff with zero other instruments. Ah well at least i ended up with no electrics 😉
<3 for the thoughtful comment on You Are My Rainbow. It's one of my favorites this year. I'm glad you liked it, too! I always love skirmishing with you, too!
I'm still catching up on sending thank you notes for your having stopped by my song "When it Snows". I am so touched by the support and comments this song has gotten. I played this at a zoom open mic even though it's not quite polished and it was well received. I will be back in touch if I get the demo up in case anyone is around to listen. Your time and support mean so much to me and I really appreciate your having taken time for me and the comments that really touched my heart, John.
Yeah John, I felt the same way about this FAWM. There was no rush and the vast majority of the lyrics were within the formal time frame, though I did threaten that I had fragments enough for several FAWMs.
Though I stopped at 14, it would have been easy to keep on going had I not been distracted with some superfluous interactions.
Thanks for listening and commenting on my song "He Changed His Stripes", I appreciate it!
I'm catching up on long overdue thank you notes for having stopped to consider my skirmish song Movin' Away. I really appreciate everyone's thoughts and support and as I rework some of my songs, will keep your comments in mind.
Thank you so much, John. I'm pasting a lot of comments, but please know that yours are always special to me as we share an appreciation of so many subjects.
Thanx for the props in the experimental thread! 😀
Sometimes I ignore and sometimes I try to follow the train wreck... sometimes, I am lost from the very start, lol
That’s the spirit!
I hear you. I’ll send you what I have. No pressure, no worries.
Oh yes, and a bass part that has a few mistakes, but who the heck listens to the bass, right?
Hey, unless I missed something you and I completely blew the challenge we initiated. Here’s a thought. I have drums and rhythm guitar, some scraps of lyrics (including your frozen brain train line) and a frozen brain placeholder. How about I dump the whole steaming mess in your lap, you do your @johnstaples magical thing, turn it into gold and we march arm in arm over the #frozenhead challenge finish line?
Hey, I'm sorry that thread ended up taking the turn it did. I thought you broached that subject in the nicest possible way.
I think they say with 10,000 hours of something you have mastered it... figure that’s what you’re going for 😀
Holy smoke John! You've been busy!
Well played i think the link is fixed now! Oh and by the way you are making plenty of appearances on the podcast this wednesday! Got to listen to see why! No animals allowed though!
Who has been sneaky? If i am not mistaken! Extra songs eh! Best laugh i have had for a while!
Straight Stick = go for it. I loved the car.
Thanks for the lovely comment on Your Last Good Bet Was Mine - I also miss Amy so so much. Devastating loss, but she will remain an inspiration for generations to come.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment on Birds! <3
Thank you for your appreciation on 'Escape Together' and the kind comments 😀
Gosh, thanks for those kinds comments! I wish you could find the time! Collabs with you are treasures! I cling to optimism!
Hi John and thanks for your comment's on Let's Get Away! You've won FAWM and then some-- congrats! I look forward to catching up on your songs over the weekend.
The cittern is a 10-string celtic instrument, with the strings in 5 courses. Mine is tuned open, G D G D G. I'm also playing cittern on Call To Dancing Song, if you want to see what (at least part of) it looks like.
Thanks for stopping by to comment on my windmill song!
Thank you, John, for your comments and for hosting the skirmish that’s prompted me to write something about the beautiful view I enjoy so much. I haven’t heard anyone else refer to it as an apricot sunset, but that’s certainly what it looks like to me. 😊
I'm not sure, I'm not super techy, if it's in desktop mode, it got there by accident and I wouldn't how to change it back. I stumbled on finding that, when I noticed that I could find the extra search fields in the 3 categories (Songs, Fawmers, Forums) if I turned the phone sideways.
I have an Android, I just checked, on my phone you have turn sideways then touch the entry you want to edit. Report abuse flag and edit pencil appear in the top right corner of your entry. If you touch someone else's entry only the report abuse flag shows.
LOL Thanks for the comments on the Toilet Song.
Do not remind me of cheap tequila. In fact I think it was expensive tequila and it was about 25 years ago and never ever ever again!
Ha ha glad i made you a new national anthem . was thinking of you a bit john as i wrote it. Thought you may be pleased 😉
Dear John, thank you so much for the feedback on "Ja, ich will (Yes I Do)" - and sorry for answering so late, I had lots of work and some technical problems, too ...
Hey John, I so badly wanted to do your skirmish on Friday. I was planning on it all day but when time came I couldn't break away. I finally got to do a skirmish tonight though, so I'm psyched. Could have used some more time but I was done enough to just go with it. Super fun...Thanks for all the information and pointing me in the right direction.
Thank you so much for the appreciation and kind comments on 'Black and White' That was a tough challenge that you set. 😀
ha, thanks! Don't worry tho, I haven't abandoned those political songs, there's a few of them posted (just look for the tags, on my home page list of songs, you'll find). Best! I have to catch up and hear alot more of yours!
glad it was a sweet listen for you John and glad the switch at the end wasn't too much of a departure for you, i was wondering. I really respect your good feedback!!
Thanks for the info. I gotta see what’s going on the on the home front tonight but hopefully I can partake in your skirmish. Sounds fun!
Hi John, would be able to explain how I can partake in a skirmish? I see there is a super skirmish tomorrow and my sense is I can do one or many. Is that the case?
On a separate topic, I just listened to your John Prine tune. Really nice.
Very glad we lived up to expectations!
(still adding hair)
I think I need to buy some neon spandex for when ZeCoop and I go on tour after recording that one.
I so desperately wanted a monkey as a little kid but the reality is a bit frightful. Thanks for listening to my tune. Looks like you only have one more to go to clear the hurdle. I'll have to listen to some more of your tunes...
Hi John! Thanks for your comments on Pine Needles! Yes, I see them everywhere and there's always at least one in the living room and kitchen at all times of the day. 😉
Just sent it over to Alex. 😀
Don't put a cork in it yet... Metalfoot and I are cooking up some hair band goodness. 😀
Thanks for commenting on Rise and Fall just now - great to hear from you.... realise I have some listening to do here too 😀
Thanks for your kind comment on Purple Balloons.
And also for talking me through your recording process, hats off to you because that is some fine playing and mixing. The song really sounds great.
John, thx so much for your comment on "Look Inside Your Heart" - I appreciate and am humbled by the John Lennon mention.
Thanks for suffering through Evol, John 😉 I'm glad you enjoyed it. The vocals almost didn't happen thanks to the input being muted in my DAW LOL. The joys of live improv & skirmish deadlines.
See You In The Shadows…
thanks for your listen John. i think the song was inspired by a unicorn shaped valentine chocolate i have! Chicago Brrr...i'm in new mexico where it only snows occasionally!! Cheers.
John, thank you for your amazing comment. It was a fun song to write, and it’s definitely a keeper. Rock on.
Early Sabbath sounds cool to me! Rock out!
Alice is waiting for you with open arms my friend!
Hey John! Things are starting to click. I can hear you doing Time To Fly if you were so inclined. Fawm is short and you have some great material as always. What say you?
wow John I'm really honored and so good to see you here again. I was a FAWMER in 2016. I think of you as a 'standard bearer' so I take your kind words about my song being "sweet and tender "and your compliments about the piano and my vocals to heart. I look forward to checking out your 'mask' tune and others.
Thanks for your kind comments on my song. I guess I'll have to add a verse about the PEACH being ruined, too. 😏 Always nice to be mentioned along with Joan Baez!
Thanks John for your kind words. I’m playing catch up with regards to listening. Always really enjoy your songs.
Thank you for the lovely comment on “Workin’ On That Now”!
Thx the kind words on 'Gotta Get Better'.Keef is the tele God!
Thank you for your complimentary comments about my song Itch! I was inspired to work on this issue when I read Allen Carr's book Easy Way to Quit Emotional Eating. The song directly incorporates some of his points in the book, such as the discomfort of quitting is no more uncomfortable than an itch, and how the junk food lies to you, and how commercials for food brainwash us into thinking we need it. Be well my friend!
Thank you John for your very sweet comment on my Good Dad song. I appreciate your words. Actually, your comment prompts my next song about how I sound like Neil Young. Seems many people concur!
Aww thanks for your supportive comments on "Uncommon these days" so appreciate your words!
Thanks for your comments on my first fawm song. Really appreciate your time. Have just been blown away by your skirmish track ‘leaving’ so good. Really inspiring!
Thanks for the comment on my week 2 challenge song!
Oh thank you for yoru wonderfull comment on my lyrics.
Thanks so much for your comment on the Siren’s Lament, I’m delighted it did that for you.
a little late with this, but thank you for your welcome, and sweet sound! love your music. happy FAWM:)
thanls for your comment on boy of the year, it always gives me a lift when you dig one of my songs.
OMG thank you for tagging me on the recommended list. *blush*
Thanks so much for your comments!
Sheesh, John. Your comments always make me blush. Thanks, friend.
Thanks so much John for your post re: Drunk in Charge of a Cell Phone 😊
Thanks for hosting the skirmish, I really enjoyed the prompt!
An overdue THANKS for recommending my song Flutter on the recommendation thread! I’m so encouraged!
Thanks for checking out and commenting on my music. I appreciate it!
Hey John. Thank you for the kind words and thoughts on Unspoken. They mean a great deal to me.
You've started off with a bang!
Yeah John, I figure I'll give it a shot. I thought tomorrow was today. Displacement issues abound.
Cheers John. Yeah, I should've given it more thought before posting up the image. I was doing it to illustrate a point, rather than to call out an individual but anyhow, in hindsight, it was probably not the right thing to do.
Act in haste, as they say
Welcome back to FAWM! 😀
Thanks for your words, John! I'll let you know when the final version of my song is ready. It may take a while, since I'm still looking for singers.
thank you for the kind words and support friend and Im excited to hear more tunes from you!
