I'm a singer/double bassist who is transitioning out of a full-time touring career into teaching. I live in a small falling down house in a cute little rural town in Central Victoria Australia with my patient and talented husband. I make a living from music and if you like it enough to encourage me not to give up and get a day job then I invite you to show your support at

I missed FAWM in 2020 due to touring with a Canadian songwriter so I've been looking forward to FAWM 2021 up until about two weeks ago when I got a massive wave of anxiety and self doubt knocked me down.

But guided by my chosen words for 2021 'Gentle' and 'Curious' I will gently and curiously dip in my big toe and see what happens...
FAWM Diary 2021
Am excited but nervous that nothing good will come out. I now have a small group of supporters on Patreon and I really want to give them some quality new songs. But COVID19 has severely restricted my experience for the last year and I'm not sure I have anything worth saying inside me.

Got to a slow start due to admin commitments and then a surprise camping trip happening today so you won't hear from me until the weekend. Feeling confident I will write while I'm away and have something to record when I get back. 😀

I’m back from camping but I have to confess I didn’t get much writing done while I was away. I have however pulled together the bones of my first song. Will demo and post tomorrow. Better late than never!

Oh man, that demo took a while! So many demands and distractions. We are renovating and after taking a break my husband has chosen now to start working again and subsequently guilting me in to helping him. Anyway, any FAWMing is good FAWMing! I must not get distracted by midi possibilities on my next song...

So behind.. everything is just not coming together. Finished another song yesterday but my tenor guitar abilities have shrivelled over two years of neglect and I got stuck in the weeds with the demo again. I’m going to have have to lower my standards and edit it together from what I have. Then put a vocal down and move on. If I can get two songs done and up today I’ll be at 5 at the halfway mark and a win could still be possible. Not if I don’t pick up my pace however.

Got another one down today and had a ridiculous amount of fun recording myself playing electric bass for the first time. Now it's 3pm and I have free time until 8pm. I wonder.... Can I skirmish another one in?...

Now I'm moving. I'm averaging a finished song a day at the moment which means I'm almost back on track, and I've sent a couple of lyrics out for possible collaborations, so they could bear fruit too. Up to 9, though one is an unfinished skirmish idea that I probably won't return to this time around so I hope to replace it with a finished song. Next another collab...

I’m at ten songs with 2 days to go and I’m pretty exhausted. I’m taking this evening off getting some sleep because the weekend is gonna be all night long I reckon... I have 4 collabs that will get me over the line if I finish them. With @petemurphy, @guatecoop, @leepat and @wobbiewobbit. We can do this!!

Ok, the Rooster Strut is done and up though the melody took a little bit of practise to articulate. I also did a rough pass of the finished lyric for my collab with @guatecoop. This leaves one last big effort tomorrow to finish my last 3 collabs. Two are almost there. One hasn’t been started yet....

Two more to go! I think I’m going to do it. I’m most excited about the fact that I have collaborated with ALL the people in this community that are part of my Patreon community. Mission accomplished.

Done and dusted. My first FAWM win with 14 complete songs demos and all posted before the cut off. I'm going to take a Netflix break tonight and then time for the listening paaartyyy!

1. I’m a hopeless collaborator. Ask @zecoop! I have all the enthusiasm and intention but even if it’s my idea I may not get around to it in my limited time and I won’t pursue anything into March for my own mental health’s sake. So don’t get attached to me finishing something and say ‘no’ if I approach you, if it means you may get offended at my inability to complete.

2. I may drop out of contact due to touring weekend availability and internet access. Sorry!

3. Please don’t take things I’ve posted and use them in your art without consulting me. This happened with a lyric of mine once and it shut me down me from finishing it myself and kinda upset me a little. If I don’t have a plan for something I’ll usually make that clear in my description. Yeah, I’m a bit precious. But this is my stuff and it takes vulnerability and trust to even share it with you before it’s finished.

4. If we do something together let’s keep talking. I’m open to everything that is polite and respectful. Any co-writes we may want to take further than February we can talk percentages and registration with performance and mechanical rights organisations when that becomes a thing.

I so appreciate your close reads of my *entire* FAWM! I am still looking forward to making my way through the rest of yours before the end of March.

thanks for commenting on my favorite FAWM song! Hadn't thought about the staccato/legato contrast before you mentioned it. Hope to post an updated demo soon. thanks again!

totally my pleasure lovely and i'd love to do a collab of some sort with you next year. There i go wishing away another year 😉

Thank you for stopping by to comment on my song "Miracles". I think I'm going to have to take this one seriously and get it going. <3

  • @sueawesome 6 weeks

you know, there are so many different styles of music out there.. but even if you don’t like the style... even a dummy would have to admit an incredible voice when they heard it. Streisand’s genre of music isn’t something I’ve ever been into but her voice is undeniably perfect and that’s what I was referencing. so yeah, it’s a compliment 100% and you should keep it 🤗

  • @psyt 6 weeks

Thanks for the listen and the lovely comment. 😀

  • @safred 6 weeks

Thanks for your lovely comments, the collab with @mahtowin has been really special, really happy with what we came up with and looking forward to it continuing beyond FAWM.

  • @nadine 6 weeks

Also thanks for your comments on my songs. The stuff here is only a rough sketch but I will do a full product in the next months. I think "Don't tell me if it hurts" could be a banger when Nate records the vocals and maybe the guitars. So the songs will sound way different when all my virtual instruments are replaced by real ones. Glad you enjoyed!

  • @nadine 6 weeks

Your welcome! I had a good time listening to your songs. Your voice is so awesome and full of emotion, so I stuck here and followed even if we make different kinds of music! Maybe we can work together someday.

  • @hmorg  6 weeks

Thanks for the comment on "Tarzan Movie"! It might not actually be John Travolta in the leather pants, though. What I had in mind, however, but for some reason left out, was an oversized loincloth, and that is definitely what John Travolta would've been wearing. Sonically dense seems to be a thing I need to try to learn out of, since I pretty much tried to do something a lot airier after writing a bunch of very dense metal songs. But I guess compared to those I kinda succeeded a bit, though. And yeah, post punk in general isn't the airiest of genres, I guess. Glad you liked it.

  • @zecoop  6 weeks

Sure, but what about fennel?!? I read the lyrics to Mrs Ze before we listened and our jaws just kind of dropped because they were kind of shocking - then we heard them in the context of the song and were ok with them, haha. 😉

  • @sherrycanary  6 weeks

    Just making the rounds again.
    Another stellar year for you!
If you haven't left the premises, i did get one more in at the finish line with Jonmeta.

Hi Liz! Thanks for taking the time to listen to my song "Smoke Follows Beauty" and for the kind words about the lyrics. Thank you so much I really appreciate it.

  • @mikeb 6 weeks

    Thanks for the song comments!

  • @timfatchen  6 weeks

Your first FAWM win? It's my lack of attention span I guess, I just think of you as an incredibly successful singer/writer, because that's what the songs come out like, and the hindbrain assumes you're a shoo-in to win! (yes I _read_ bios! Isn't it strange and wonderful how different it can be on the outside looking in versus inside looking out? Very human!)

  • @sph  7 weeks

Liz, I hear a hint of Nature boy in the opening of Perfection. An all-time fave. And I just love how you steer the tune with its waves.

  • @aesthetic72  7 weeks

Hi Liz, Thanks for your wonderful and very kind comments on my jazz original and collab with Rob. My goodness, I would LOVE to have an actual bass track to add to that demo. 😀 How generous! 😀 Let's talk more via email. I think my link works in my profile. I am consumed by work right now but will be looking to escape from that soon. I listened to some of your tracks here plus your work on your website, but haven't had time to comment. You're a true talent! I adore the pieces you did just you and your bass. <3

  • @skibum1066  7 weeks

Thanks for your kind words and observations on my collabs with Robyn and Kathy. They both worked perfectly as far as I was concerned. Robyn is a talented musician from a talented musical family. I I have limited equipment and skills so I had to sing the round Kathy wrote with myself to make sure that the harmony would work. It wasn't perfect but fair to middling for a beginner. It has been fun..particularly the collabs.

  • @thedutchwidows  7 weeks

Thanks for the kind comment on my honey jar song. So glad you liked the 'sweet insulation' line - it's my favourite line in the song as it's factual. Apparently bees use honey as insulation to keep them warm in winter (although I don't know if it's all species). Makes me feel bad about humans eating honey and making the bees cold. But I do like honey.

  • @yam655  7 weeks

Thanks for the comment on The One. Lyrical improvisation can be hit-or-miss at times, but when it hits it can be really fun. For me right now, it is the easiest way to leave my inner critic gibbering in the corner.

I once saw Bruce Sterling (a parent of cyberpunk) talk about why folks were so hung up on the various something-punk genres. The dystopia is always presented as having an easy solution depending upon a single person. We live in a dystopia now, but it is easier to wait for The One than to do anything about it.

I have missed so many!! Congrats on the win! Winning in so many levels, too. All those collaborations, all those amazing creations. And just being a winner in general! You are amazing, Liz and I am honored to know you and get to be artistic with you! I am so thankful

  • @tukayandryan  7 weeks

So lovely to have your feedback. Thank you! Will be listening more this week 😀

  • @deadhead 7 weeks

Thanks for listening to my music! I definitely "heard" lyrics for How Far Will I Go For Her when I wrote the piece, but lyrics come far and few between for me so nothing now, but it definitely would shine with some.

  • @wobbiewobbit  7 weeks

woot woot! so did you!! yay congratulations and i so love our collab 😀

  • @davidtaro  7 weeks

Thanks for the comment Liz! Only at 13? Having listened to your stuff, you could sing the phone book and it’d sound great! I’m sure you’ll get something out 💪😀

  • @guatecoop  7 weeks

Oh wow! That is So good. I couldn’t be more grateful to you!!

  • @petemurphy  7 weeks

Thanks Liz. I hope you're able to do something with it. The music spilled out of me very quickly, straight after receiving your message asking me to send you something.

  • @prsongsmith  7 weeks

I had a similar thought as I was writing “Kil’d by Several Accidents” - it felt like the opening number for a musical. Now, I just have to figure out what the rest of the show is about! Any ideas?

  • @prsongsmith  7 weeks

Thanks for listening to "I Can't Read Your Mind" and "King Ornette Ade"! Really appreciate the encouraging feedback! King Ornette was really just an experiment -- I'd never played around with loops like that, and yeah, that bassline was too good not to use! (I only wish I'd played it myself 😀 ). As for "Already Leaving" -- I completely identify with the feeling that something is too raw or personal to share. But a wise man once told me that the best songs make others feel that they are not alone in what they are feeling or going through. I think that only really happens when a songwriter has the courage to sing her truth -- so thank you for doing that. Looking forward to listening to your other songs!

  • @guatecoop  7 weeks

I’ve been thinking about your topic of mindfulness and isn’t that what we really do? We set the time aside specifically for being aware of what we are thinking and hearing. I guess I never thought about music in that way....yes, go figure! My profession is counseling and you just helped me to that insight.

  • @guatecoop  7 weeks

    Oh that is exciting!!

  • @leepat  7 weeks

that’s great Liz, go ahead and post it directly, I’d love to discover it here and don’t think I’ll have time to add anything anyway 😀

  • @jaegerin  7 weeks

I love it <3 Thank you so much. I have a big smile on my face now!

  • @bithprod 7 weeks

Thank you. I can change the key for you quite easily. Which one do you prefer?

  • @oddbod  8 weeks

Just remembered some BVs I was going to add so I'll do those first then post it.

  • @oddbod  8 weeks

Hi Liz, I've done something with the lyrics you sent although I haven't used all them. It was a bit of a quick write. Do you want to see if you want to add something to it or are you happy for me to go ahead and just post it?

  • @leepat  8 weeks

hi Liz, sent you sth. feel free to cut and paste as necessary. standing by...

  • @petemurphy  Feb 19

    Ok, cool!
Within five minutes of reading your message this morning, I sat at the piano and wrote something.
I'll get it into slightly better shape, and send it to you as soon as I can. Probably Monday.
When I send it, and if you feel it's something you want to work on, feel free to change / chop / edit / add instruments / request it in a different key, etc 🙂

  • @petemurphy  Feb 19

    Heya Liz,
Yes, I'd love to. How would you like to do it? Do you want me to send you some music? If so, any thoughts on style / direction, etc?
Or would you like to try a different approach?

Only thing is, I'm taking the weekend off because it's Lyns's birthday, so I might not get to it until Monday.

  • @oddbod  Feb 19

Cheers, I got it. Let me see what I can come up with.

  • @apolez3 Feb 19

LOl, I switched to think, meant think, not thing... hehe

  • @wobbiewobbit  Feb 19

    hey! i would LOVE to!

  • @metalfoot  Feb 18

Thanks! Got it. Will look at in a bit. My children have piano lessons for the next couple hours.

  • @metalfoot  Feb 18

Apparently if you lock it I can't see it either. Feel free to email me with stuff.

  • @leepat  Feb 18

sure, let me know if you have chords or genre preferences, otherwise I’ll just send you an idea.

  • @metalfoot  Feb 18

    Thanks! Very much appreciated 😀

  • @metalfoot  Feb 18

Whichever you're more comfortable with. My styles this year have been running the whole range, lounge jazz, country, pop, hairmetal, folksy guitar...

  • @metalfoot  Feb 18

Are you interested in doing anything together (not offended if you're feeling swamped or whatever)? I have a bit of time this evening and tomorrow and am hoping to get some song writing and recording time in.

  • @tan482 Feb 18

    Woooooo!! Excited!!!!

  • @tan482 Feb 17

    Check your email! 😀

  • @oddbod  Feb 17

Sorry, I wasn't ignoring you! Well not deliberately - I've so much going on at the moment I missed your message - apologies, my heads all over the place.
Yeah, of course I'd love to collab, if I can find some time. If you got any ideas/sparks them feel free to throw them over.
I'll have a root around down the back of the sofa for a possible idea.

  • @tan482 Feb 17

YES I want to collaborate! Whatcha got?! 😀

  • @oaksnprairie  Feb 16

I’m so happy you liked Penelope. When I posted it, it felt unfinished to me, but now I realize that you don’t need every detail for the story to emerge.

  • @standup  Feb 16

So your tenor tunings might lean a little more towards mandolin, cool. My darlin' @pfoo plays an electric tenor a bit, and she prefers the mando-ish tunings for sure.

  • @sueawesome Feb 15

lol, I figured that’s what you meant but I like how it read the way you wrote it! given the subject matter your wording felt somehow a little empowering. but of course I prefer karma lol

  • @guatecoop  Feb 15

Oh Liz, it is all yours!! I would be very happy to hear you finish it up with what you do!

  • @sueawesome Feb 15

‘cuts just right’ .... I mean.. I wasn’t trying to ‘cut’ anyone. but if he’s going to get in my space - karma?

  • @eas3637  Feb 15

Thanks for your kind comments and the recommendation! I look forward to listening to your music!

  • @papaooo Feb 15

Thanks for your comment on my "One More Drink" song! I'm hoping to work on demos at some point, but I am technologically inept, and having started FAWM a week late, I'm just trying to catch up.

I'm looking at this as a writing time, not so much a demo time. There will be plenty of time for that after 2/28, I think.

Keep at it, and thanks for the feedback!

  • @nahlej381  Feb 14

I will happily reimburse you for the spilt milk thanks for listening!

  • @petemurphy  Feb 14

Thank you Liz. The trust and admiration is mutual. I have the greatest respect for you, as a person and a musician. You're a beautiful soul.

  • @hamiltonpoolhall  Feb 14

Aw, thanks so much; checking in over here was MY reward for wrapping a super intense and not so FAWM-y week myself. Glad you’re back and posting away!!

  • @cindyrella  Feb 14

    Thanks for your comments!

  • @sueawesome Feb 13

oh my, thank you so much for all the comments!! so sweet of you 🙏🏻

  • @metalfoot  Feb 12

No no no, it is the dead of winter, -33C here, my family was in waiting-for-COVID-results lockdown last week... I had *time* on my hands. I've hit the brakes hard and done a lot less this week.

  • @metalfoot  Feb 12

I really liked the song - it did have that gospel feel and a lot of joy in it. 😀

  • @metalfoot  Feb 12

Yes! Psalm 139:14 but I wasn't sure if that was a deliberate quote on your part or not.

  • @radiobenedetto  Feb 10

Thanks for the kind words and for adding Jonny Got His Fun to the Recommended List! It’s an honor! I will make space for at least another couple of fingerstyle songs just for you;^)

  • @jaegerin  Feb 10

Hi Liz, Thanks for your comment on “The Black Dog Always Lies” and yes I would love to collaborate - feel free to go ahead!

  • @zecoop  Feb 10

Hey there Liz... I am going to send something over. (no pressure, you know the routine. 😉

  • @yam655  Feb 9

In your diary, you say "restricted my experience [...] I'm not sure I have anything worth saying inside me". But songwriting is like any other writing. You can pull pieces of your experience out, stretch and shape them, and create something delightfully fictitious, but still with a solid emotional grounding.

Shoot, sometimes I'm unaware of the emotional grounding I have for a piece until after I've written the song. That happened this year with "I brought my egg shakers" when only as I was posting it did I realize, just like the character in my song, I think it would be really fun to be in a band.

  • @wacha  Feb 7

Thank you for your kind words on "Mythical".

  • @mikeskliar  Feb 7

  • @zecoop  Feb 7

Welcome back to FAWM Liz!! I am listening to your wonderful song now! 😀

  • @tan482 Feb 6

Hi lovely! Hope you get a little done this year. We all need to be gentle with ourselves after last year. Love and hugs xox

  • @dani312 Feb 5

Hello there! Good to see you on here. I had my doubts too about this year, but here I am (for better or worse...). Even if I get one good song out of it then it would have been worth the effort. Hope you're well and look forward to hearing your amazing songs if you're up for it. <3

  • @bigmood Feb 2

Hey, fellow bassist/vocalist! somebody directed me to your page, I'm stoked to see what you end up doing.

I understand the self doubt and anxiety (oh boy, do I understand them!), but if you feel up to it, I hope you do manage to get something done. You are a superstar to me.

I was on the fence about taking part, but decided a couple of days ago that I'm definitely in.
