This is FAWM number FIVE for me and I'm an addict.

I'm a singer/double bassist who only writes songs during FAWM it seems. I live in a small falling down house in a cute little rural town in Central Victoria Australia with my patient and talented husband. I make a living from music and if you like it enough to encourage me not to give up and get a day job then I invite you to show your support at .

15/01 Yep, I'm going to do it this year and I really want to produce finished demos. 2018 was a horrid year with almost no finished songs. I have to do better this year. I have a lot of cumulative guilt about unfinished collabs in the past so if you approach me, understand that my reluctance will be mostly due to the fact that I disappoint more than come up with the goods!
Day four already and only one up on the board thanks to an early morning skirmish. I’ve been playing with two ideas but they keep slipping through my fingers and defeating me. I also have been taking the time to rewrite a couple of really old songs that I like but knew weren’t right. I am proud however that I posted more than a lyric for the skirmish. It’s not a great start but there is something on the board.
Day 8 and I'm catching up a bit. I finished a quick song for the Clothing challenge this morning and then put a scratch vocal down on a bluegrass tune that I sent to my friend Tanya to play some fiddle on. So that one won't take much now to get over the line. Almost 4 in 8 days- that's some kind of record for me. I've taken on 6 Collabs so far too so I got plenty of work to do...
Argh three days and no time for FAWM. Had such a good start and now life has its demands. I’m hoping all the work I’m doing in my head will turn tomorrow evening into something spectacularly productive.
Just crossed an item off my FAWM bucket list. Had the courage to ask @hamiltonpoolhall to collaborate on something and he sent me a lyric that I went all New Orleans on. I’ve kind of technically caught up but that last skirmish lyric was so bad I don’t want anyone to see it. Gotta get more FINISHED songs!
Had a rehearsal and two gigs yesterday so no FAWMing and have got started really late today because I didn't get home from the second gig until close to 3am. I've taken on too many collaborations for sure, and they all have the potential to be interesting cool songs. But... I'm going to limit myself to working on only one or two at a time now until they are done and posted. Then moving on to the next idea. As far as writing for my own performance project. That's gonna have to wait until March now I reckon.
Was SO satisfying to post ‘Circus of Trolls’ my crazy collab with @petemurphy. That one took a lot of energy and was so different stylistically I was a bit scared of whether I could pull it off. Now if I could get something else posted today I will be officially ‘caught up’ so to speak. ... And I've got it! A nice little depressing song with musical bed courtesy of the wonderful @timfatchen
My voice is a bit tired now but I’ve managed to avoid falling for a virus yet which usually happens by this time in February. Not sure which of the remaining songs I’m going to tackle today. I have four collabs still outstanding...I'm certainly doing the rounds of genre this FAWM. Just posted an acapella piece and now I'm going to get some sleep before some Bossa nova times with @leepat !
I finished my latin skirmish demo and another latin collab, then finally finished my lyric for a collab with @guatecoop . It's another tonsil ripping lyric however so I'm saving that for tomorrow...
A couple of superskirmish lyrics have got me over the finish line technically but I won’t consider it a win until there are at least three more demos up that involved actual songwriting for me. ‘Nothing More’ was a lovely thing to do - but it didn’t involve any songwriting on my part. Today is the last proper day I can give to FAWM, let’s see what I can get done!
The Canadians I’m about to go on tour with have arrived so I’m officially out of time- but damn-it! I’m gonna try and find time. I have those three skirmish songs I want to demo and two remaining possible collabs. Time to go into warp speed!

1. I’m a hopeless collaborator. Ask @zecoop! I have all the enthusiasm and intention but even if it’s my idea I may not get around to it in my limited time and I won’t pursue anything into March for my own mental health’s sake. So don’t get attached to me finishing something and say ‘no’ if I approach you, if it means you may get offended at my inability to complete.

2. I may drop out of contact due to touring weekend availability and internet access. Sorry!

3. Please don’t take things I’ve posted and use them in your art without consulting me. This happened with a lyric of mine last year and it shut me down me from finishing it myself and kinda upset me a little. If I don’t have a plan for something I’ll usually make that clear in my description. Yeah, I’m a bit precious. But this is my stuff and it takes vulnerability and trust to even share it with you before it’s finished.

4. If we do something together let’s keep talking. I’m open to everything that is polite and respectful. Any co-writes we may want to take further than February we can talk percentages and registration with performance and mechanical rights organisations when that becomes a thing.
I got one of the superskirmish demos posted and worked on one of the last two collabs I’m committed to. But I really have no time. Bugger.

  • @leomozi  Mar 7

Here's my updated demo for "What Color Are Your Eyes?"

  • @tamsnumber4  Mar 3

Thanks for visiting my collabs "How Long" and "Move On" and for listening and commenting, it is appreciated!

  • @danvaillancourt  Mar 2

Thanks for listening again this year. I am catching up on the comments here in March... to answer your question... Nashville tuning is a guitar strung with just the high strings of a twelve string set (or some brands make an actual Nashville tuning set these days.) Great for second parts, mandolin-type parts, piano-type chord voicing or anytime you just want a little more room in the low end for something else. 😉 I keep an electric and acoustic strung this way all the time as well as a baritone guitar strung in "half-nashville."

  • @guatecoop  Mar 2

Here’s the updated song with vocals.....

  • @jwhanberry  Feb 28

  • @netnoise Feb 28

Hi Liz. I just updated Blue Velvet Jacket and Long Time Gone. I hope you like my additions. Thank you for making my FAWM so much more enjoyable.

  • @hamiltonpoolhall  Feb 28

I'm so pleased you got it in under the wire - or rather after the wire, on the road! That's going the distance, no pun intended. I just left some effusive words in my share of the liner notes and I meant every word. I absolutely LOVE where you took it! And yes - one song away now, so I'm grateful for that as well 😀. I have one I'm hoping to get demo'd and posted in the morning and then will be making the rounds, catching up on, among other things, your *very* busy February...

  • @wobbiewobbit  Feb 28

thanks for your comment on my shed song... yes true story ( i dont actually know about the rats bit because as i say i cant go in there to check... i am just glad i am as far away as possible from your neck of the woods (planet) it must be a million times worse there!!!

  • @ajna1960 Feb 27

Hmmm now there is a challenge ! I am in the GMT timezone so I am about to got to bed on the 27th. In theory I have a full 24 + hours left. If I do something early tomorrow morning, is that ok for you ?

  • @ajna1960 Feb 27

Re 11 already - hell yes, I really am going for it !!!! Thanks for the encouragement 😀 I would really like 14 actual demos up - but that means writing something like 20 songs in order to find 14 collab partners willing lol

  • @looprication  Feb 27

Hey thanks so much for your comment on 25th!

  • @kovbleu  Feb 26

Aw, thank you for your comment on "Snow." I'm glad you felt it captured his story. I'd really like to build that ending chorus up into something epic but it'll have to wait til after FAWM. 😀

  • @misterd Feb 26

Thankyou Liz for listening and the kind words on my song ‘I like bands that don’t exist yet ‘ . Appreciate it .

  • @sherrycanary  Feb 26

Thank you for all the wonderful comments on my songs. Means a lot coming from you.
    I love your music

  • @hamiltonpoolhall  Feb 26

    Aah, surprise me 😀.

  • @metalfoot  Feb 25

Thanks for your kind words. I love singing LOW. (Could you tell?) And Daniel's lyrics were SO GOOD they deserved that kind of treatment.

  • @kovbleu  Feb 25

Thank you for your kind words on "The Steady." I'm glad you could connect with the song. I'm sorry it was due to your anxiety, but I understand how you relate. I feel you, sister! Much love.

  • @fearlessflight2014  Feb 25

Look at me accidentally posting on my own soundboard...??!

  • @netnoise Feb 25

Hi Liz. I'd be happy to contribute to Blue Velvet Jacket and Long Time Gone. I know we're getting down to the wire and I hope to steal time this week to record some tracks for you. Is there any chance you can send me a version of Long Time Gone without the BIAB sax?

  • @aesthetic72 Feb 24

Thanks for the lovely comments on my songs. 😀 You’re so talented!

  • @igg Feb 24

    Hi Liz,
Sorry you won't be working on "New Heart of Steel"........Maybe next time.....?

  • @rustyp Feb 24

    Hi Liz,
Thanks for listening and for your kind comments. 😀

  • @guatecoop  Feb 23

Okay, I listened because I couldn’t wait. It’s SO COOL ! Now I have to wait to mix it!!!! Ah torture. So good, Liz. I can’t thank you enough.

  • @guatecoop  Feb 23

I can’t wait to hear it! Unfortunately, parenthood is going to delay me from hearing and working on it until this evening. Maybe nap time! Thank you thank you! You always put so much craft and effort in everything that you play, write, and sing.

  • @zecoop  Feb 23

I can guarantee he'll love it. You seem to be incapable of a bum idea. You are an amazing artist and a super nice person to boot. I always feel very lucky to write with you and he has said the same.

  • @zecoop  Feb 23

No worries! Our song is awesome and you have had a wonderful fawm from my perspective. Oh, and, your postcard arrived... Thank you!!! 😀

  • @hanke7 Feb 23

    Thanks again for kind comments

I used to write poems/lyrics all the time
But never thought others would find them worth reading

    Maybe they are

  • @andygetch  Feb 23

Hang in there Liz, maybe there are some song bits that can rise from the ashes one day 😀

  • @metalfoot  Feb 23

Sorry my skirmish theme didn't work so well for you 😞 Thanks for giving it a try, anyway, my friend!

  • @jwhanberry  Feb 22

  • @leepat  Feb 22

got it! thanks a lot Liz, you're a pro! hope to mix and post this weekend...

  • @adforperu  Feb 22

Thanks so much for sharing my song on the forum 😀 I'm way behind on my watchlist... you've been busy - on it this weekend!

  • @emplate Feb 22

Thank you for your kind words on "Trickster Supreme"! I often try to invest in lyrics, although during FAWM they're of course rough and made much faster. I try to write them so as there could be several ways to interpret them, so that hopefully a listener reading them could find something of their own in them.

  • @repsurepa Feb 21

Hi! Thank you for your comments on Odd Things and the end. Warms my heart!

  • @hanke7 Feb 21

Thank you for your kind words!

  • @natalieedelson  Feb 21

thanks for your kind words on "woodstove" looking forward to listening to your songs 😀

  • @ceilidh  Feb 20

Music is up for O Tsukimi and other songs now!

  • @cherok40  Feb 20

Thank you very much for listening to my tracks and for your very kind comments. I appreciate it a lot!

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 20

I thought you did a collab with tim Fatchen? That was what i was referring. I am in theback blocks of tassie now with very limited service so i may have got it wrong.

  • @jsini  Feb 20

Thank you for commenting on Endless Highway. Appreciate it!

  • @ceilidh  Feb 20

Thank you for your comments on Tiny Home and Winter Light Festival! I sang them for the local song circle where they were well received. Yay! Always nice when the children do well...

  • @srcoops Feb 20

Thank you for your nice comments on Old Friends and Hate.

  • @lowhum Feb 19

thanks on the comments for the bossa!

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 19

Wow double aussie, very nice one.

  • @leepat  Feb 19

    cool! you've got mail.

  • @timfatchen  Feb 19

Oh. And> Sometimes amazing things come through in a rush. Honesty is often one of them! 😉

  • @timfatchen  Feb 19

i finally swirch on againa nd see your 1min ago message! Geat! And I'll even be here still to hear it!

  • @mikeb Feb 18

Thanks for the listen and comment on my Pachelbel challenge song. It was fun doing a tune to this classic chord pattern.

  • @leepat  Feb 18

Hey Liz, thx for listening! Can I interest you in a bossa nova duet maybe?

  • @timfatchen  Feb 18

Yep! That's the tortured logic I've lived by, including professionally. Bite it off and chew desperately. Damn the naysayers! It can be done!

  • @timfatchen  Feb 18

ref the dirge, no, go with anything you wish, any title, it's the least river-like! If it's okay then,I'll put the other two up as instrumentals. Will you be able to produce and post the Campaspe graveyard? (My time is shot)

  • @petemurphy  Feb 18

That backing vox arrangement is jaw droppingly beautiful. Just listened to bass + lead vox and bv's without the rest of the music, and I got the chills. Wow!

  • @acousticmaddie  Feb 18

Thank you for your kind words on The dancer

  • @petemurphy  Feb 18

Ah, that's great, Liz. I look forward to hearing what you've done. Thank you for working on it!

  • @jamkar  Feb 18

    Thank you!

  • @mikedebenham  Feb 2019

Re shows - I'd be honoured to have you, Liz, but I'm not much of a public performer. Not really enough of an extrovert to enjoy it. One of these days I'll manage to be in town for one of your Melbourne dates though. And I haven't been to see @susyblue either. What's wrong with me? (Probably incipient middle age. 😀 )

  • @guatecoop  Feb 2019

Oh my! I didn’t even realize! I thought that I did 24, but I guess I didn’t. I’m at john’s House now, but will be back home tomorrow and will send a 24 bit version to you. Sorry about that!

  • @metalfoot  Feb 2019

Liz-- if there's any way I can be of help or assistance to you in any way in your quest for 14, let me know! 😀 I really appreciate you so very much. It's an honour to 'know' you through FAWM and I very much cherish the chance I had to collab with you a couple years ago.

  • @zecoop  Feb 2019

Well it sounded great and I really enjoyed it. 😀

  • @timfatchen  Feb 2019

I just assumed she wasn't playing the contrabass at all> But then, being male, i was more interested in the wild weaponised woman costume.!

  • @acousticmaddie  Feb 2019

Thank you so much for your kind words on Bosses song. Yes a dog is a great companion. If you can't have one there are ways to support the rescues to like a sponsor dog.

  • @timfatchen  Feb 2019

No one does. We can't dance like her either !

  • @petemurphy  Feb 2019

    Oooooops! Sorry Liz.
    Here it is...

  • @hamiltonpoolhall  Feb 2019

Oh!!! Can’t wait to check it out! (I’ve been slow with the guitar track I promised...) But it doesn’t seem to be in my email inbox...

  • @timfatchen  Feb 2019

Oh I can do it! It's just I'm reading a lot of lyrics and get easily sidetracked! (two days to work up Chicken on my way to Freedom, it was like a caramel malted milkshape, just irresistable!) How about "Trentham Falls"? a la Kate bush - ha!

  • @timfatchen  Feb 2019

Liz I've only got 5 solid days left, Godsake remind me I'm sending you stuff if you haven't seen it by Sunday!

  • @petemurphy  Feb 2019

Hi again, Liz. Here's a folder with two versions, one in F and one in G.
No bass, so go ahead if you're feeling saucy. Also feel free to add anything else if you want.

  • @petemurphy  Feb 2019

Ooops! Just realised that there is a bass part in the version I sent to you. It shouldn't have been in there, it's just a rough thing I put down when I was mapping things out. I'll sort out versions in both F and G, and they'll be without bass (you're a much better bassist than me, and it will give you the option if you want to do the bass part).
Just switching my music computer on, and that will be the first thing I do.

  • @petemurphy  Feb 2019

Liz, if you have a preferred key for the song, just let me know. There aren't any 'real' instruments on it yet (it's all midi / virtual instruments), so changing the key only takes a few seconds. I stay with virtual instruments exactly for this reason, and add the guitars n' stuff in when the key is right.

  • @s7even  Feb 2019

That’s all I ask! Thank you very much.

  • @s7even  Feb 2019

If you happen to catch any of my lyrics that you think you’d be interested in collaborating on please let me know. I’m a fan.

  • @s7even  Feb 2019

You have one of the best voices I’ve come across on fawm. Great lyrics. Great songs. Great job

  • @mattblick  Feb 2019

BTW - Xoa - one of my favourite albums from last year - right into this year. Down to you. Thanks!

  • @mattblick  Feb 2019

Got it - on it from Monday

  • @timfatchen  Feb 2019

Something for you, It'll be 2-3 days Liz, I got sidetracked by escaping chickens, pink screens and owls on the roof. I haven't the faintest idea why people suggest we live a bohemian surreal life here. Nor does the local ghost.

  • @auditasum Feb 2019

That chord progression was mostly C, F, and G. But thank you!

  • @blackrose1313 Feb 2019

    Thanks for the awesome comment!

  • @jwhanberry  Feb 2019

  • @timfatchen  Feb 2019

Yes got time. Piano is easy (=fast) compared to the wretched FT Travelling Blues Band that takes me 4 hours at a stretch. Specification please (in words), not that what pops out necessarily fits. Also, best central key for you and happiest vocal range.

  • @igg Feb 2019

Well, for me, I would love to see and hear your approach rather than trying to direct it to something I might have in mind....
But if you feel that you would rather not engage it in that way (a lot of work), I understand I'm asking a lot. Whatever you decide I'm delighted to have the opportunity to work with you....I really enjoyed working with Tanya a couple of years ago and I felt "Bringing Heaven Down To Hell" was a great song...a real favorite I still listen to occasionally...

  • @igg Feb 2019

No, singing, blacksmith skills....It's all yours ....Tell me what you'd like....

  • @jackbyrne Feb 2019

Thanks for your comments on "Questions," and "Minutes to Midnight!" Those demos are up now. I love "Blue Velvet Jacket" btw 😀

  • @madeline Feb 2019

Thanks for your kind comment, Liz, on "Maybe, Maybe"! I just put the demo up, which sounds pretty minimal, at least for me. Enjoy!

  • @zecoop  Feb 2019

The Paper Mouse is welcome to play with papercuts... 😀

  • @igg Feb 2019

Thanks for your lovely comment about New Heart Of Steel.... I would love to hear your magic touch my story.... You're the best....

  • @hanke7 Feb 2019

Please do set to music I just like writing lyrics and don't have much time to flesh out tunes and harmonies

  • @guatecoop  Feb 2019

That will work. I will just have to get home to send it to you. It will be a couple of hours or so.

  • @guatecoop  Feb 2019

Well, that’s your call. I do have to remix and I can just get your tracks in there when I do that. Yeah, just have the time start time so I don’t mess up the the placement....I sometimes mess up the intended alignment because I just don’t think like a vocalist. Could you send the files via wetransfer? Dropbox gets a little glitchy for me. Thanks!

  • @guatecoop  Feb 2019

Hey Liz! Sure you can and thanks. It’s not my best as far as timing and such, but you can go for it if you wish!

  • @petemurphy  Feb 2019

Oh! And your rockin' song blew me away. Amazing! The guitars are ace (and your incredible voice, of course)

  • @petemurphy  Feb 2019

Ha! Thanks Liz. Yeah, most of the time I don't have a complete melody when I first press the record button. Sometimes it's mostly there, other times I'm literally making it up on the spot 😁

  • @hamiltonpoolhall  Feb 2019

Aw, c'mon, seeing your post in the "recommended" thread has made my FAWM. Seriously.

  • @adnama17  Feb 2019

Oh my God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's frickin' awesome!!! 😀

  • @adnama17  Feb 2019

No no no! You posted it at almost midnight my time. I waited around for you to unlock it, but couldn't wait any longer. I had to sleep or I wasn't going to at all. I'm off to listen now, before my tea even!, I'm that excited hear it! 😀

  • @adnama17  Feb 2019

I'm a dork. I can't figure out how to listen to it. Hmphf. I'm more than fine with you unlocking it without me hearing it first. Surprises are fun!, and I'm excited to hear what you did with it. 😀

  • @misterd Feb 2019

Thanks so much Liz for listening and kind words on my tune ‘Funky song #14) . Appreciate it !

  • @dani312 Feb 2019

Thanks for your comment on Our house is falling down. Tan and I have finally gotten around to making a recording. I have a feeling this will be a slow FAWM for me, but hopefully I can manage to crank out a few more ☺️

  • @hamiltonpoolhall  Feb 2019

Left-field additional thought: I have this song I've just finished, but the music feels derivative and I can't get it out of my mind long enough to recast it some other way. Do you have any desire to take a crack at seeing just the lyrics and if they prompt you to some sort of bass-and-vocal awesomeness? I could circle back afterwards with guitar if needed, or not. If this sounds like a TERRIBLE idea I will completely understand, and still send mystery-inspired fingerstyle guitar and a prompt as discussed 😀.

  • @hamiltonpoolhall  Feb 2019

Those sounds like good parameters! Do you want to be left to your own devices lyrically?

  • @adforperu  Feb 2019

Bah, no need to apologise! It's funny actually, my earphones gave up the ghost today, so I borrowed @judypie's and guess what the first song I put on was? Alas, it could be panned left, right or anywhere inbetween; it was still a lovely song 😀
