This is FAWM number FIVE for me and I'm an addict.
I'm a singer/double bassist who only writes songs during FAWM it seems. I live in a small falling down house in a cute little rural town in Central Victoria Australia with my patient and talented husband. I make a living from music and if you like it enough to encourage me not to give up and get a day job then I invite you to show your support at https://lizfrencham.bandcamp.com .
FAWM JOURNAL 2019
15/01 Yep, I'm going to do it this year and I really want to produce finished demos. 2018 was a horrid year with almost no finished songs. I have to do better this year. I have a lot of cumulative guilt about unfinished collabs in the past so if you approach me, understand that my reluctance will be mostly due to the fact that I disappoint more than come up with the goods!
Day four already and only one up on the board thanks to an early morning skirmish. I’ve been playing with two ideas but they keep slipping through my fingers and defeating me. I also have been taking the time to rewrite a couple of really old songs that I like but knew weren’t right. I am proud however that I posted more than a lyric for the skirmish. It’s not a great start but there is something on the board.
Day 8 and I'm catching up a bit. I finished a quick song for the Clothing challenge this morning and then put a scratch vocal down on a bluegrass tune that I sent to my friend Tanya to play some fiddle on. So that one won't take much now to get over the line. Almost 4 in 8 days- that's some kind of record for me. I've taken on 6 Collabs so far too so I got plenty of work to do...
Argh three days and no time for FAWM. Had such a good start and now life has its demands. I’m hoping all the work I’m doing in my head will turn tomorrow evening into something spectacularly productive.
Just crossed an item off my FAWM bucket list. Had the courage to ask @hamiltonpoolhall to collaborate on something and he sent me a lyric that I went all New Orleans on. I’ve kind of technically caught up but that last skirmish lyric was so bad I don’t want anyone to see it. Gotta get more FINISHED songs!
PHILOSOPHY ON COLLABORATING
1. I’m a hopeless collaborator. Ask @zecoop! I have all the enthusiasm and intention but even if it’s my idea I may not get around to it in my limited time and I won’t pursue anything into March for my own mental health’s sake. So don’t get attached to me finishing something and say ‘no’ if I approach you, if it means you may get offended at my inability to complete.
2. I may drop out of contact due to touring weekend availability and internet access. Sorry!
3. Please don’t take things I’ve posted and use them in your art without consulting me. This happened with a lyric of mine last year and it shut me down me from finishing it myself and kinda upset me a little. If I don’t have a plan for something I’ll usually make that clear in my description. Yeah, I’m a bit precious. But this is my stuff and it takes vulnerability and trust to even share it with you before it’s finished.
4. If we do something together let’s keep talking. I’m open to everything that is polite and respectful. Any co-writes we may want to take further than February we can talk percentages and registration with performance and mechanical rights organisations when that becomes a thing.
Liz-- if there's any way I can be of help or assistance to you in any way in your quest for 14, let me know! 😀 I really appreciate you so very much. It's an honour to 'know' you through FAWM and I very much cherish the chance I had to collab with you a couple years ago.
Well it sounded great and I really enjoyed it. 😀
I just assumed she wasn't playing the contrabass at all> But then, being male, i was more interested in the wild weaponised woman costume.!
Thank you so much for your kind words on Bosses song. Yes a dog is a great companion. If you can't have one there are ways to support the rescues to like a sponsor dog.
No one does. We can't dance like her either !
Oh!!! Can’t wait to check it out! (I’ve been slow with the guitar track I promised...) But it doesn’t seem to be in my email inbox...
Oh I can do it! It's just I'm reading a lot of lyrics and get easily sidetracked! (two days to work up Chicken on my way to Freedom, it was like a caramel malted milkshape, just irresistable!) How about "Trentham Falls"? a la Kate bush - ha!
Liz I've only got 5 solid days left, Godsake remind me I'm sending you stuff if you haven't seen it by Sunday!
Hi again, Liz. Here's a folder with two versions, one in F and one in G.
No bass, so go ahead if you're feeling saucy. Also feel free to add anything else if you want.
Ooops! Just realised that there is a bass part in the version I sent to you. It shouldn't have been in there, it's just a rough thing I put down when I was mapping things out. I'll sort out versions in both F and G, and they'll be without bass (you're a much better bassist than me, and it will give you the option if you want to do the bass part).
Just switching my music computer on, and that will be the first thing I do.
Liz, if you have a preferred key for the song, just let me know. There aren't any 'real' instruments on it yet (it's all midi / virtual instruments), so changing the key only takes a few seconds. I stay with virtual instruments exactly for this reason, and add the guitars n' stuff in when the key is right.
That’s all I ask! Thank you very much.
If you happen to catch any of my lyrics that you think you’d be interested in collaborating on please let me know. I’m a fan.
You have one of the best voices I’ve come across on fawm. Great lyrics. Great songs. Great job
BTW - Xoa - one of my favourite albums from last year - right into this year. Down to you. Thanks!
Got it - on it from Monday
Something for you, It'll be 2-3 days Liz, I got sidetracked by escaping chickens, pink screens and owls on the roof. I haven't the faintest idea why people suggest we live a bohemian surreal life here. Nor does the local ghost.
That chord progression was mostly C, F, and G. But thank you!
Thanks for the awesome comment!
Yes got time. Piano is easy (=fast) compared to the wretched FT Travelling Blues Band that takes me 4 hours at a stretch. Specification please (in words), not that what pops out necessarily fits. Also, best central key for you and happiest vocal range.
Well, for me, I would love to see and hear your approach rather than trying to direct it to something I might have in mind....
But if you feel that you would rather not engage it in that way (a lot of work), I understand I'm asking a lot. Whatever you decide I'm delighted to have the opportunity to work with you....I really enjoyed working with Tanya a couple of years ago and I felt "Bringing Heaven Down To Hell" was a great song...a real favorite I still listen to occasionally...
No limits......music, singing, blacksmith skills....It's all yours ....Tell me what you'd like....
Thanks for your comments on "Questions," and "Minutes to Midnight!" Those demos are up now. I love "Blue Velvet Jacket" btw 😀
Thanks for your kind comment, Liz, on "Maybe, Maybe"! I just put the demo up, which sounds pretty minimal, at least for me. Enjoy!
The Paper Mouse is welcome to play with papercuts... 😀
Thanks for your lovely comment about New Heart Of Steel.... I would love to hear your magic touch my story.... You're the best....
Please do set to music I just like writing lyrics and don't have much time to flesh out tunes and harmonies
That will work. I will just have to get home to send it to you. It will be a couple of hours or so.
Well, that’s your call. I do have to remix and I can just get your tracks in there when I do that. Yeah, just have the time start time so I don’t mess up the the placement....I sometimes mess up the intended alignment because I just don’t think like a vocalist. Could you send the files via wetransfer? Dropbox gets a little glitchy for me. Thanks!
Hey Liz! Sure you can and thanks. It’s not my best as far as timing and such, but you can go for it if you wish!
Oh! And your rockin' song blew me away. Amazing! The guitars are ace (and your incredible voice, of course)
Ha! Thanks Liz. Yeah, most of the time I don't have a complete melody when I first press the record button. Sometimes it's mostly there, other times I'm literally making it up on the spot 😁
Aw, c'mon, seeing your post in the "recommended" thread has made my FAWM. Seriously.
Oh my God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's frickin' awesome!!! 😀
No no no! You posted it at almost midnight my time. I waited around for you to unlock it, but couldn't wait any longer. I had to sleep or I wasn't going to at all. I'm off to listen now, before my tea even!, I'm that excited hear it! 😀
I'm a dork. I can't figure out how to listen to it. Hmphf. I'm more than fine with you unlocking it without me hearing it first. Surprises are fun!, and I'm excited to hear what you did with it. 😀
Thanks so much Liz for listening and kind words on my tune ‘Funky song #14) . Appreciate it !
Thanks for your comment on Our house is falling down. Tan and I have finally gotten around to making a recording. I have a feeling this will be a slow FAWM for me, but hopefully I can manage to crank out a few more ☺️
Left-field additional thought: I have this song I've just finished, but the music feels derivative and I can't get it out of my mind long enough to recast it some other way. Do you have any desire to take a crack at seeing just the lyrics and if they prompt you to some sort of bass-and-vocal awesomeness? I could circle back afterwards with guitar if needed, or not. If this sounds like a TERRIBLE idea I will completely understand, and still send mystery-inspired fingerstyle guitar and a prompt as discussed 😀.
Those sounds like good parameters! Do you want to be left to your own devices lyrically?
I'm trying to re-find the joy in writing - so why don't we do something just for the hell of it - write a song that neither one of us would ever record outside of fawm and then there's no pressure to make it 'good' -
how about we select akey and tempo and then write a few bits and set ourselves the challenge of frankensteining them together into something semi coherent? I'll pick the key - A (can be major/minor/lydian whatever)
you pick a tempo (can be any time signature)
then maybe you throw me a random bassline/bass solo to write something over and I'll send you a random something - whaddya want - chords, lyrics, riff, solo, melody
OR we could just do something Normal
whatever's the most FUN and the least STRESS
Of. COURSE. Yes, for sure, I would be *delighted* to do so.
I can definitely send some guitar your way; do you want to drop a title or any other kind of boundaries my way or just totally take your chances? 😀 Hint: it might go quicker with some parameters to spark the imagination, but they could be anything - a word, or words, a mood, a key, a tempo, a meter...or even any skeletal music you have up on blocks waiting for something to happen...
Thank you for your comment on "The way you raised me" - the connection you mentioned within the line "The way you raised me" and part of me now... was actually something new to me. Thank you for this! I uploaded a rough audio-demo of it just now - if you are interested how I have put those lyrics into music 😉
Hi Liz, I've just sent some music to your gmail.
thank you for taking the time
to read my lyric, MOTHER
what a wonderful compliment
and gesture to say if you were a man you'd like to turn it into a song, that means so much to me
and I know you have a beautiful voice, maybe next time I'll get you
At the risk of overwhelming you... I have another song that really might be perfect for you. You'd even have a very slow bowed bass solo (I currently have a midi cello solo there, but you know). 😉
I'll e-mail you the song to see what you think.
That truly was a beautiful song. I'm glad you took the time!
Yeah! What you thinking?
Woo woo! Of course, Liz. That would be ace. It's almost bed time here, but I'll see if I can come up with something tomorrow. Love the songs you've posted so far.
Thank you for your comments on O Tsukimi! Keep on FAWMing -- you're uploading excellent work! Definitely watching for more to come!
Right now I am very sad that my company blocked the files.fawmers website since last year... I can't listen to the songs I know that I want to hear. Looking forward to yours from home very very much. 😀
thank you thank you
for such lovely words
on my lyric
ain't it always like that
Lovely to see you on here again! Looking forward to hearing more of your beautiful songs!
Hey Liz, yes I'm as shocked as you that I've managed to do two already! I think because work has been so busy and overwhelming, FAWM has become even more important to me in terms of winding down and having some sort of outlet to redirect my stress. It has been great to come home and give myself an hour or so just to play, completely for myself... so indulgent!
The song about your dad must be really tough, given it is so recent. Give yourself time and space - we will all still be here to listen to it when you're done xox
When you offered to record double bass and vocal harmonies to my demo for "Delete & Restart" (2013 I think?) that did something for me that perhaps you'll never fully know. I attribute my turnaround as a songwriter to that exact moment. So thank you, Liz!
As long as you embrace your inner worst-ness, that's all that matters! If I can find it, I'll send it to you in Slack. 😀
No worries! If I can rustle them up, want to have a go at them again? No problem if you don't. I'm sure I can find a use for them. 😀
Hate it when I double post!
Hi!!! Don't suppose you still have those lyrics I sent you for last year's random collab?
Hi there! Have a lovely fawm!
So... I wrote a song that immediately called your name to me. I e-mailed it. See what you think. <3 😀
Looking forward to hearing your songs this year.
Liz, great to see you back! I'm sure you're busy with summer gigs but hope to hear some of your beautiful tunes xx
Thanks Liz!!!!!! You are the best.
And - FAWM is almost here. I can't wait!! 😀
Hola Miss Liz!! Hope you're doing well. Good luck!
14 songs in 28 days!!
Good to see you back. Looking forward to hearing what you come up with!
Great to see you back, Liz. Always a treat to hear you.
I wanted to swing by again and tell you that I dig your collaborating theory! I read it yesterday when I left the splash and I was thinking about it all last night lol
Happy fawm, Liz, for as long as you can perch and chirp in our midst!
Best wishes for a great fawm. "Relax into it" is my motto this year.
PS. I definitely want to try a skirmish for the first time this year!
Hey Liz! Not sure this is going to be an easy year for FAWM but who knows?! Hope YOU get some UH-MAZING songs this year xox
good to see you Liz - have fun!
The feeling is profoundly mutual! I'm so looking forward to hearing you as well.
Hey Liz!!! 😀
Can't wait to hear your wonderful bass and vocals
Hey Liz! So glad you're back around. It's the best addiction, really. Happy Fawming!
Thanks! So glad to see you back as well! 😀 Looking forward to listening to what you write this February!
Oh thank you<3. I am happy to see you to. Lets rock this!
Hi Liz. Enjoy the month for what you can do and don't worry about what you can't! Remember, you can't songwrite if you're dying from starvation from insufficient gigs!
Aw, thanks! Very kind of you to say ☺️
thank you Liz! your props mean a lot to me. And yes here we are! By the time we get midway through fawm I should be off the dreaded FB too!!!
Glad to see you back! I also have unfinished collab problems from previous years... It's too much pressure sometimes!
I always try to listen for your songs, so I’m glad to hear you’re in for FAWM in 2019.
Hi Liz! Nice to have you back and it's very exciting to read that you're able to participate more this year. That's all kinds of awesome! Looking forward to hearing your works and being inspired. Jelly will be served up a-plenty!
Heya. Good to see you around.
Sooooo glad to see you here! Yes please, I certainly hope we can!! I really cannot wait to read and hear your new creations. 😀
Hey Liz, good to see you here!
Hiya Liz. 😀
yay good to see you too! hope this year is a great FAWM for you 😀
Yes, a collaboration with you has just warmed my heart at 3:53am (I have a teething child). I have a few new instruments and already have sound combinations in my head that would sound great for you. Hopefully the songs to match that sound will come! I really look forward to hear you when you have the month to do what you want. That’s great for you. Cheers!
