Artist Bio

Influences:   Folk, Indie, Pop, Gospel. Music of life. I listen to an eclectic mix. Love strong female singer/songwriters. Dar Williams, Reba McIntyre, Abigail Washburn, Indigo Girls, Pink, Beyoncé, Lizzo, Crys Matthews and many of you! Beth DeSombre and Becky Warren's music were introduced to me through FAWM.

(Pronouns: she/her/hers) Soprano and storyteller with mediocre guitar and keyboard skills who loves making up tunes and singing with other folks. I have been married for 24 years and have two transracially adopted teenagers. Avid reader, puzzler and boardgamer.

This is my SIXTH FAWM! What!?! Five years ago, I joined mainly to listen to and support a friend....And now, I have connected to other Boston area songwriters, done a bunch of open mics, and written over 40 songs that I would not be embarrassed to perform in public.

I am open to collaboration. Your work belongs to you, and my lyrics/vocals belong to me. I will respect your work and give you credit for what you have done.

Thanks . Hmmmm. That might be a stretch for me...based on the normal flow of my life,...but...I have enjoyed FAWM so much.... Question: Does Colleen have a last name that I can mention in the collaboration (like KathyMoran or RobymMackenzie)?

  • @skibum1066  Mar 9

    What is "50/90" ...and when?

  • @skibum1066  Mar 8

Colleen, Question: After FAWM, do you leave your songs saved in Soundcloud in the public mode or move them to private mode. Either way...why?.

  • @tamsnumber4  Mar 5

Thanks for listening to my songs "Lights at Sea", "Blue Snow" and "Amelia" and my collab songs "One Kiss", "I Can't Wait", "Tears at Midnight" and "Where I Want You / By My Side", I appreciate it!!

  • @audrey  Mar 3

Thank you so much for the kind words about my piece "What Might Have Been". I appreciate it. Hope you had a fabulous FAWM and that you have a great and safe year ahead. Hope to 'see' you again in Feb 2022. 😀

  • @iwilleatyou Mar 2

    Thanks for the listen!

  • @lizbrinker  Mar 1

  • @mal70 Feb 28

WHAT BREAKS A HUMAN HEART - thanks for the feedback on this. Punk! Interesting indeed. Any further thoughts?

  • @gb9  Feb 27

Thank you so much for your kind comments on 'Escape Together' 😀 It isn't a party of two here either....

  • @richaaaay  Feb 27

Colleen...Thanks for the note on Cheers. Glad to hear you were big into running. I've got quite a history in that arena as well. Such a great activity, all you need is a pair of shoes. Such a great bare bones sport.

  • @jorh  Feb 27

Thank you 😀 I was pretty happy with myself when I came up the with the ‘present/presence’ line haha so glad you noticed! Yeah I think the structure is slight sporadic at the
moment but deffo has some potential with improvement

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 27

Oh, @colgoo , you've made my day, yet again. You are not only a skilled lyric writer, you write a mean, and by that I mean beautifully frame-worthy, comment! I loved what you wrote in response to every one of my songs and I thank you. My Heart Skips A Beat! (in a good way...)

  • @jorh  Feb 27

No way what are the chances, I just went for Belmont as the place cause it rhymed with want 😂 haha I feel ya, my partner is always trying to work out which ones are about them - guess that means it’s authentic tho!

  • @skibum1066  Feb 25

Colleen, I have added a little more commentary to Witching Hour which may take some of the edge off the spookiness and ground the Lyrics a bit more

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 24

Well, your comment on The Twelve Bar Blues knocked me over, @colgoo ❤️
    Thank you so much!

  • @jorh  Feb 24

Thank you - really glad you enjoyed it! Funnily enough I don’t often write personal songs but this was actually about how me and my partner met (it was very unclassy ha!) and got together - may be why it sounds like a convo 😀

  • @skibum1066  Feb 23

I totally love it...Thanks. You are indeed CREATIVE!. I am honored by the attention you have given. A gift! Check out my addition to your notes on the song to make sure they are appropriate.

  • @mikeb Feb 23

Thanks for the comment on the latest rock oepra song.

  • @richaaaay  Feb 23

Colleen, I appreciate you listening to Eureka. It's always meaningful to read your sincere comments...I feel like you were my first friend on FAWM. Thanks for the support.

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 23

@colgoo , I happen to have several take-out menus right here, so come on by! Thanks you for the lovely comment on my song without words, def# jam.

  • @skibum1066  Feb 23

If "Witching Hour" works for you as a collab, it works for me! .And/or if you have some little odd lyric me, I will happily address it!

  • @bobskyyoung Feb 22

FYI, my demo for Better Things that you commented on is now available on my page.

  • @nancyrost  Feb 22

Sending you condolences on the loss of your beloved dog. I know it's hard, and I'm glad you have therapists. I just lost my dear cat at the end of January, and I'm in a pet grief support group - can invite you if you think it would be helpful.

  • @daveyboy103  Feb 22

    Thanks for your kind comments.

  • @skibum1066  Feb 22

OK... We look after our #8 grandchild tomorrow and Wednesday.
So I won't be able to check this until tomorrow evening. Hopefully, we can start then

  • @jorh  Feb 21

I still wasn’t happy with some of the metaphors so I’ve switched the 2nd and 3rd lines in the 1st and 3rd stanza - and rewrote them slightly. Hopefully that works a bit better 😀 definitely one to keep working on!

  • @jorh  Feb 21

Thanks for spending time looking through the lyric your advice is super, super useful!!

Yes I agree there’s probably still some ambiguity - I think names are a good way to go, I’ll have a little think where best to slot them in 😀

Good idea to differ the rhyme pattern in the verse/chorus - I think I probably saw what you’ve described as the verse more as the chorus and vice versa but I suppose it’s just 4 stanzas, 2 of each. I’ve just made a simple change to achieve a ABAC rhyme pattern for now, but I’ll definitely revisit after FAWM when I have more time - I loved some of your ideas for new lines so I might come back to you on those.

I think I was trying to be too clever with the ‘teardrops are the wheels (I.e tyres) of my old Chevrolet’ - I was trying to draw a parallel between them both rolling, and continuing throughout the entire car ride - but I think your 100% right about changing to ‘teardrops on the wheel’, it more simple and effective. I was unsure what to put for the 3rd line so I went with the bourbon but was more of a placeholder as something that you sink your shame/ bad habits into like an ashtray, but it didn’t really fit the other themes of car/fire. I’ve now changed it to ‘shame is an ashtray that’s burning astray’ - think it still needs a bit more tweaking but a lot more happy with it

Thanks so much for your help 😀

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 21

Thanks so much, @colgoo ! It was so nice working with Rich on Come On By.

  • @skibum1066  Feb 21

I would love to attempt a collaboration with you if If I can catch the drift of the lyrics....or...I posted some of simple poetry as Lyrics looking for music. Be my guest

  • @richaaaay  Feb 20

Hi Colleen, thank you for that very nice comment on Come On By. It was so fun to collaborate with Liz. She’s amazing...

  • @jorh  Feb 20

Thanks for your lovely comments Colleen! I did initially have plans to do a 3rd verse, but then for reasons i can’t remember I decided against it ha. It’s a great suggestion to have an instrumental bridge tho 😀 When writing it I kind of had in mind that ‘you look worse since the last time I saw’ you could be open to interpretation - either the spouse had got worse or the narrator had a lot of guilt so they perceived they looked worse when they returned. Also in the first chorus I didn’t know whether to use her, instead of you, so ‘she looks better than the last time to saw her’ to make a distinction between the new lover and the spouse (‘you’) - do you have any thoughts on this?

  • @aneil Feb 20

Thx for your kind comment on my song immerse me in the music. Wow 19 songs done already! You have certainly done well ! Enjoy the last week of FAWM

  • @cleanshoes  Feb 20

Thank you so much for commenting on Spiral!

  • @richaaaay  Feb 19

Thanks for the comment Colleen. I really learned something going through that exercise. You are an experienced traveler through FAWM. I feel like I’m getting a sense of it. So many cool aspects. I’m thinking a skirmish...I had no idea what that was until yesterday. I’ve listened to lots but never realized the songs were time constrained. I very much appreciate your warm welcome...

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 19

Thanks, @colgoo ! It was quite challenging, if I’m honest. I promise never to use the word ‘augment’ in a song after this😂

  • @berni1954  Feb 18

Glad you liked my Collab with Arthur (The Night that Never Ends)

  • @tukayandryan  Feb 18

Thank you for your lovely feedback on 'Safe from Harm'. Hopefully, one day, it will get some radio play!

  • @opossum Feb 17

    Dear Colleen,

Yep. I knew it. Mama bear. Hope you have a warm cave right about now. I'm in some guy's attic. I chewed a little hole in his ceiling and warm air just wafts right up. Congrats a getting yer FAWM trophy already. I prolly won't get to 14 but that's ok. I'm havin' fun!

    Your friend,
    Opossum

  • @mikeb Feb 16

Thanks for the comment on 'Tears at Midnight'!

  • @skibum1066  Feb 15

I've listend to several of your songs. So far I like Karma and Metamour best. Celebrated Valentine's Day with my daughter and her family. Sang them "Love Makes the World Go Round" ..and at your suggestion tried it as a round. It worked well! Thanks. All my kids and grand kids have heard most of their songs.
Curious: Your beloved Simon & Patric Guitar. tell me about it!. I call my little Yamaha CG17SF, my "Holy Guitar". It's a gift from God! Imperfect but it has amplified my voice. However, I might consider A simon & Patric. I have friends from Quebec. They are natural craftsmen!!

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 15

@colgoo I am bowing for the two clapping people in your abode and I thank you so much. And HIs Name Was George is about my late father and I love it.

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 15

@colgoo your comment on You're Not The Bossa Me made me want to write ANOTHER bossa nova piece! I need a peek inside your brain, I think.

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 15

Oh, @colgoo , you've made my day! Yes, all true things in Bliss, Nothing But Bliss. I'm a lucky gal, to be sure. Where do I begin listening to your multitude of songs, oh prolific one? Do you have a favorite?

  • @jaegerin  Feb 14

With all those reasons to smile you could write your own song 😊 Or perhaps I’ll do a second variant! Thanks for the listen!

  • @infilktion Feb 14

Thank you for the wonderful comment on "Don't Stop Filking Until Tomorrow"! We'd be happy to play an RPG with you if we end up at the same con!

  • @jaegerin  Feb 14

Thanks for your lovely comments 😀

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 14

Ha! Ironing can be quite cathartic! (She admitted, sheepishly) Thanks for listening to Smooth It Out, @colgoo !

  • @crisp1  Feb 14

It's lovely, Colleen! I have a super busy morning/early afternoon so I'll put up a note after I'm through. Thank you so much!

  • @skibum1066  Feb 14

Thanks for your gracious comments on my songs and yes., one of my foci for this 2021 fawm is to complete 4 new songs for the grandchildren who I have not yet celebrated yet....in song

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 14

Hiya, @colgoo ! I’m glad you enjoyed My Neighbor, Conway ☺️
    True story!

  • @lizbrinker  Feb 14

Why, thank you, @colgoo ! That’s awfully nice of you!

  • @trolls2 Feb 13

thank you for your kind comments on 'lonely hearts'...i could say the same thing about myself I am a
"Mezzo Soprano and storyteller with mediocre guitar and keyboard skills who loves making up tunes" i look forward to visiting more of your tunes.

  • @audrey  Feb 13

Wow, thanks for the offer regarding Choir's Back! Of course I don't know if it would even be accepted, but I'll finish it up ASAP then submit it for consideration to Cypress Choral Music.

  • @richaaaay  Feb 13

Thanks for your advice. Trying to sort it all out.

  • @nateger Feb 13

I appreciate your kind words and for putting my tune in the recommended thread! That means a lot 😊 by the way, I see you're in Massachusetts! I hope I see you around when things open up again!

  • @richaaaay  Feb 13

Thanks for listening to my song The Rock. A comment is a little gift to people posting songs. You seem like and old pro on this site. Prolific writer & listener.

  • @audrey  Feb 12

Thank you for your kind words about my song "No Hurry". I'm glad you like it and that it sounds like an old song to you. I was trying to capture that era, so thanks, but yes, it is a new song for me. I'm retired, so I have perhaps more time than some to write music. 😀 I always feel it takes me forever though, and it's why I never make it to 14 songs in FAWM. This piece took longer than usual and it kind of wiped me out because I couldn't bring myself to write anything else for two days afterwards. My choral piece "Choir's Back!" took much longer and I DID start that one before FAWM, but it still needs more work. I'm not happy yet with a couple of spots in it. I hope to submit it before the pandemic ends to a choral music publisher for consideration. Will probably go nowhere, but I'm gonna try anyway. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment on "No Hurry" I appreciate it.

  • @richaaaay  Feb 12

Thanks for the encouragement. Amazing how prolific you are...

  • @mikeb Feb 12

Thanks for the comment on my latest rock opera song! You are so prolific, I can't keep up!

  • @mmmmarcus Feb 12

Thank you kindly for the comment on Set Me Free! Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

  • @hollystargazer Feb 12

Wow, you are so prolific. I’ve gotten stuck on a song I can seem to finish. I may have to move on to another idea. Funny that when I am at work, all kinds of ideas come to mind, but when I try to put them together, things dry up. Very frustrating. Keep it up!

  • @jorh  Feb 12

I can’t keep up with you, you’re on fire this FAWM 🔥 gonna take a listen to a few now, can’t wait!!

  • @dock  Feb 12

Thanks for the comment about the second voice in unison. That was a happy accident of trying several takes to get it right.

  • @cellarrob Feb 11

Thanks for the kind feedback! 😀

  • @ineloquentsd  Feb 11

Sorry to take so long to get back to you! I’m supposed to be avoiding screens and that unfortunately includes FAWM. 😔

I would be SUPER honored and excited to see what you do with “Bard is a Combat Class!”

  • @vivalarayna Feb 11

Thank you for your kind comments on "Battle of Coup Orleans"! I do love to do parodies and the like in non-FAWM months, but try to force myself to do completely original lyrics and music in February. I'm very glad I made an exception for this one. Yes - recording this moment in history because they're already gaslighting even though we were all witnesses. ITMFA.

  • @mishykatz  Feb 10

Look at you almost there!!! Thanks for the great comment on Turns Out Its Just Thin Air. Much appreciated=)

  • @wrenarcher  Feb 10

Hi Colleen! Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to my songs and to comment on them. Really makes me feel good that my little ukulele identity song touched you in a good way.

    Thanks again! Muah!

  • @jorh  Feb 9

I'm glad you love it - thanks for your kind words again, they're always a great motivation to keep writing. I can see you have a few new ones i need to check out after work - you're delivering the good stuff this year and been super prolific!! Yes i would LOVE that - definitely would be a great addition to our shared album 😀 No pressure tho - maybe we could even do it after Feb cause i know you like to try collab with different people during FAWM. I've promised a few people collabs but my writing had tried up last few days - hopefully someone will like this one and put it to music as it's one of my faves too. More than happy to have different interpretation tho!

  • @mikehex  Feb 8

Thanks for the listen and kind words for "Meet me at the Swings".

As for writing process, I usually use the "interpretation of tongues" technique. I'll write most of the music, sing gibberish into a recording, and then listen to it back and try to figure out what I'm talking about. It takes a few iterations and I may need to do some rewriting to make things fit, but it's been the most effective method for me.

Skirmishes are different because I don't have time for iterating, but I still do something similar. I'll usually spend five minutes coming up with two or three lines to establish a feel, try to get the chord changes set and recorded in the first 20 minutes or so, then gibber into the mic. By 30 minutes in, I'm usually listening to what I've got and trying to make sense of it. About 20 minutes to write all the words, then 10 to record them.

On "Meet me at the swings", I actually made some structural changes pretty late and had to rerecord my chord changes. I was about 15 minutes late getting my skirmish in (felt even worse since I was hosting!) but I was happy with the song

  • @kahlo2013 Feb 8

Thanks, Colleen! I really appreciate your kind comments.

  • @cleansupafterburn Feb 8

Yeah, I like screeching Gulls too. It's nice to do demos. Thanks.

  • @mikeb Feb 8

Thanks for the comment on my latest opera song!

  • @clioem Feb 7

    Thank you muchly!

  • @sourcedecay  Feb 7

Thanks for all the comments! On "Sunday" you mentioned lifting the melody on second half of the verses. Something I was also thinking so I'm definitely with you there! Sometimes I find out where I can't make my voice do the things I'd like to though haha but it would be something good to change make the verses not drag on. Appreciate the suggestion!

  • @sourcedecay  Feb 7

Thank you also for listening to "The Devil's Rain"! As my first FAWM song this year, I think it's still my favorite I've written so far. : )

  • @sourcedecay  Feb 7

Thanks for the kind comment on "I Won't Cry"! Jordan did a great job on that original melody and lyrics and it inspired me to try my hand with it. I like how it turned out!

  • @jorh  Feb 7

Aww thanks colleen 😀 I think I just feel more comfortable backstage ha - but it’s good to try some new things sometimes and FAWM is definitely the place to do that!!

  • @andrewjtaylor  Feb 7

Well that was your most impressive recording yet that I’ve heard, as far as I remember, so well done, regardless! And hey, I don’t even have an electric guitar. Forgot that in California when I drove to Massachusetts in 2009. Been kicking myself ever since. : I’d be willing to attempt to add acoustic guitar to it as a temp if you like. I only asked because I don't think I've ever once in 4 years of FAWM re-recorded/produced a song made in FAWM. Life always comes back with a vengeance in March and by the time the smoke settles, it's April and I've no pressure to get the stuff re-done. My favorite recordings are those from year 1 which I treated as full productions. Some folks do a March Album Production Month, but I've yet to actually DO it, though I've intended to.

  • @crisp1  Feb 7

    Sending you an email.

  • @crisp1  Feb 7

Thanks for all your comments lately, Colleen. I see I have some catching up to do -- you've been really busy, too!

  • @mikeb Feb 6

Thanks for the comment on my first skirmish song!

  • @tukayandryan  Feb 6

Thank you for the lovely feedback. It is Ash Tu-kay and Rebecca Ryan; I presume you were talking about Ash when he sings 'Catherine'. 😀 We really love doing harmonies - so happy you liked them 😊

  • @ineloquentsd  Feb 6

Thank you for your sweet comment on “Unfortunately Embodied.” 💖

  • @ineloquentsd  Feb 6

Surprisingly, after writing “3 AM Fears,” I did manage to get to sleep. Apparently, you CAN sing yourself to sleep. 😂

  • @apolez3 Feb 6

Thanks for your comment, actually started to ask a few people to see if they would like to collab on it

  • @cindyrella  Feb 6

Thanks so much for bringing my words to life!

  • @ozcompr  Feb 6

Thanks for the feedback on "Champion"! Glad you enjoyed it!

  • @mikeb Feb 5

Thanks for the listen and comment on my latest FAWM song. Until I get the whole 'opera' written, all the songs will be in 'arrangement flux'!

  • @mikehex  Feb 5

Thanks for the listen and comment on Non-intervention! Was the abruptness of the end intentional?... sort of. I was originally thinking of putting a break and another verse in, but I didn't really feel like I had anything more to say on the subject, so I ended the song.

It fits really well with the theme of the main vocal (I want to help, I can't help, walk away), so I'll take credit. But it's mostly an accident

  • @aprilm  Feb 5

Thanks! I was surprised when I saw the pre-skirmish warm up and then all of a sudden, I got an idea so I went with it! Strange how the brain works sometimes lol

  • @jorh  Feb 5

Not at all - I love the rawness and honesty in your songs, that’s what makes them so special! Yeah I suppose every lyric/song has your own experiences weaves into them

  • @cindyrella  Feb 5

I know you can write great lyrics but yes, I'd be honored to have you do this one!

  • @crisp1  Feb 5

Thanks for your comments on As the House Burns Down!

  • @haim  Feb 5

haha.. Fawm is here, do what you gotta do.. Sending you the best wishes.

  • @haim  Feb 5

Hi Colleen. I'm sorry to hear about your father. I hope you are doing well given the circumstances. Thank you for checking out my song, and I hope your'e having a good fawm. Hugs, Haim.
