Final FAWM days: caught a bug. 😞 will respond to all your kind comments soon

I've always favored the monophonic. I studied classical flute semi-seriously, so I read music. But I play a number of other instruments mostly by ear, including my voice - which is my main instrument right now. The past five years I have started getting into digital music that I write and produce on my MacBook using Logic.

I have never taken any voice lessons (aside from a few random lessons here and there) I honestly learned to sing by listening to Ella Fitzgerald CDs. Back in the late 90s I would buy a CD put it in the player, and keep it on until I knew each song. Then I would go and buy another one.

My vocal style is also steeped in my heritage - I am from Newfoundland where there is a lot of Irish/English folksong influence. That celtic-sounding, falsetto flip faux-pas that I do a lot comes from that, and I also have a hard time not using it because I feel like I came by it honestly. 😝

But my main musical influences have mostly been 80s female artists and the 80s New Wave sound. I also loved early disco (Ross), the Stones, hair bands like Def Leppard, and was a huge Police fan - (first record I ever bought!)

Getting into digital music means that I can easily find the sounds of my youth and participate in sonic time travel and be a singer/songwriter in a style that has etched itself in my brain. I don't feel that I recreate 80s music. I just make music that sounds like music I once danced to. But the show tune thing? That's all Ella. πŸ˜€

I performed vocals live for five years as part of a duo cover band (vox piano). I quit that two years ago when my voice started becoming unpredictable. So I stick to my studio now and I love it. Still trying to sort out what's up with the voice box, but it's slowly getting better.

My first original song was written in 2015 with my pal back in England. That's the year we started FAWM. πŸ˜€ He's been captured by real life, so I've been here on my own for three and It's been such an amazing exploration. There's nothing like singing my own lyric.

2020: This will be my 5th year doing FAWM. I'm very much looking forward reconnecting with this wonderful community and to participate in some collabs, too.

Update: Super behind in listening and collabs! Thanks to everyone for all your lovely comments. I will return in kind - in time. πŸ˜€

Feb 15: Update on the update: Just installed some extra RAM in my MacBook to remedy the some of the issues I was having with Logic. It's helped a little, but I think a new MacBook is in my future next year.

Here's all my stuff from the past 3 years:

Aesthetic72 WAS a duo: Kelly (a wandering Canuck who now lives in Davis, CA), and ... (Chris has been called away due to life.

  • @barbara  Feb 24

β€œOrange is the new treason” β€”much better!

  • @metalfoot  Feb 24

I think the parameters I set for myself help with my generation of large quantities. My pieces aren't always the most sonically polished, by any means. But I am going for idea-generation... and my brain loves generating musical and lyrical ideas! Thanks for your kind note on my soundboard. I need to listen to more of your music!

  • @ayehahmur  Feb 24

Hey, thanks again for your comments on Shadow Of Your Former Self. Must admit I wasn't certain if I could drop in a pastry desert and keep the creepy mood, so it's good that like mille feuille.
And the guitar - isn't real guitar I'm afraid. It's just keys with a guitar sample. It doesn't really sound like someone playing guitar (to me) yet so I might rework it.

  • @sph  Feb 24

Singing and having coffee should be a good fit. Thanks!

  • @jeyemusik Feb 23

Thanks for the ISBN for the book - I'll check it out.... unfortunately it's more than a few years since I've had a University to check whether they have it..... ah.. old age.

  • @looprication  Feb 23

OMG YOU mixed "Stay"!? Damn, good on ya!

  • @engebretsen  Feb 20

Thx a lot for comments on "Childhood memory" The Giorgio M. comparison is a honour! Thx a lot.

  • @zecoop  Feb 20

Will do... It may be incomplete, but you'll get the idea. I'm still figuring where I want it to go, as far as instruments - completely minimal or a little more. We'll see. πŸ˜€

  • @zecoop  Feb 19

If.......... you have time, I actually have one that would work really well with you, I think. Quiet acoustic. But if you are too busy, let me know. I know you have a lot going on. You can decide after you listen as well. I should have it far enough along tonight to send something. πŸ˜€

  • @barbara  Feb 19

Thanks for listening to my love song. I’m happy for all the things you said about it; it’s a breakthrough for me to have written something that light!

  • @delwoodworks  Feb 18

Kelly, thanks so much for your comments on Everyone Knows Superman! I love your voice and your pen. Happy FAWMing

  • @engebretsen  Feb 18

THX for comments on "Good Deeds" !!!!

  • @zecoop  Feb 18

No worries and no pressure.... Kalamazoo would welcome you for sure, lol. Stacy and Chris and Rob and I love playing in the band together, but life has kind of gotten crazy on many fronts, but we still love hearing what we each come up with. I'm glad I convinced them to jump into this madness, (it took a while) haha. If something happens, that's awesome, but if not no worries. Just keep me in mind for now or the future. πŸ˜€

  • @zecoop  Feb 18

Hi there Kelly - Your songs are all on my list, but things have been slower and more up and down this year. Loved what you did with Chris' song and looking forward to what you do with Rob's as well. I am an instrumental writer only, so if you ever hear anything of mine you'd like to take a shot at just let me know. You have such a beautiful voice and wonderful style. πŸ˜€

  • @juoppis  Feb 17

Thank you so much for your comment on The Survivor's Waltz <3

  • @tamsnumber4  Feb 17

Thank you for your kind comments on my songs, "Wash Me Clean", "Insecure" and collab "Who We Really Are"!

  • @cts  Feb 16

So I'm having this weird issue with the vocals on our track and it's really irritating me. I'll have it ready soon. I stepped away from it so that I wouldn't throw my keyboard at it! 😁

  • @jeyemusik Feb 15

Thanks for the recommendations - unfortunately the link to jstor didn't work. However, the Oxford Handbook of Music and Virtuality looks absolutely amazing. Such a great breadth of interesting ideas. I'll definitely be getting (not in hardback tho.... Β£100+.... eeek!!)

  • @kovbleu  Feb 15

Wow, thank you so much for that incredibly kind comment. I've always thought of myself as a good musician who's an "ok" singer - so I really take it to heart when people with obviously beautiful singing voices (like yours) find meaningful things in what I do. I really appreciate you listening to my songs. πŸ˜€

  • @engebretsen  Feb 14

Thx for comments on my song!

  • @gregwere Feb 11

Yeh, that would be good Kelly, do you need me to send you anything for you to do - I forgot what we did last time! I've only ever done the one collab with you, so still a novice at all that. Cheers Greg

  • @tfish77 Feb 11

Thank you so much for lovely comments!

  • @bandybum Feb 11

Ah a fellow Natalie Merchant fan - fabulous!
I love your suggestion of both creating and comparing versions for @slawbleu β€˜s track, Sundazzle.
Although I offered, he's not yet responded to give me permission to do so.
How about you - has he been in touch and sent you an mp3 to work on?
Love your voice so really interested to see what you come up with for this track πŸ˜€

  • @cts  Feb 11

Got it. A little setback. So tracks will get delayed.

Thanks for your kind words on my "Chernobyl"-track. Much appreciated!

  • @faceofeinstein  Feb 2

    Another fellow Canadian!
Thanks so much for the comment on helpless. Cheers!

  • @jeyemusik Feb 2

Glad you didn't take umbrage to my critique - and I would say that your signing behind the beat works very well here. I would offer to do some rhythms in a style that made sense to me but I fear that would be both presumptious on my part and something I couldn't deliver given the decidedly slow progress I'm making on my collage'y FAWM.

  • @cts  Feb 2

    Thanks, Kelly. And you’re welcome.

  • @gm7 Feb 2

    Just loaded a loop song....
