Feb 24: Work. Still. Crazy. Constantly owing words to a large readership during the day means that most of my word juice is used up by the time I go to write songs. So as much as I'd LOVE to do more collabs - I can't say yes because you cannot count on me right now. I MAY get one of my own out in 4 days, but I'll be the only one I'm disappointing if I don't. Loved all my collabs this year. Just wish I had creative space for more.

Feb-12-21 Update: Work consumed me. But I have four days off and I am playing catch up. Still very much around. Need to catch up on my listening after I get some songs out.

I've always favored the monophonic. I studied classical flute semi-seriously, so I read music. But I play a number of other instruments mostly by ear, including my voice - which is my main instrument right now. The past five years I have started getting into digital music that I write and produce on my MacBook using Logic.

I have never taken any serious voice lessons (aside from a few random lessons here and there). I honestly learned to sing by listening to Ella Fitzgerald CDs. Back in the late 90s I would buy a CD put it in the player, and keep it on until I knew each song. Then I would go and buy another one.

My vocal style is also steeped in my heritage - I am from Newfoundland where there is a lot of Irish/English folksong influence. That celtic-sounding, falsetto flip faux-pas that I do a lot comes from that, and I also have a hard time not using it because I feel like I came by it honestly. 😝

But my main musical influences have mostly been 80s female artists and the 80s New Wave sound. I also loved early disco (Ross), The Stones, hair bands like Def Leppard, and was a huge Police fan - (first record I ever bought!)

Getting into digital music means that I can easily find the sounds of my youth and participate in sonic time travel and be a singer/songwriter in a style that has etched itself in my brain. I don't feel that I recreate 80s music. I just make music that sounds like music I once danced to. But the show tune thing? That's all Ella. 😀

I performed vocals live for five years as part of a duo cover band (vox piano). I quit that two years ago when my voice started becoming unpredictable. So I stick to my studio now and I love it. Still trying to sort out what's up with the voice box, but it's slowly getting better.

My first original song was written in 2015 with my pal back in England. That's the year we started FAWM. 😀 He's been captured by real life, so I've been here on my own for four years and It's been such an amazing exploration. There's nothing like singing my own lyric.

2021: My 6th FAWM!

Here's all my stuff from the past 4 years:

  • @cts  4 weeks

Just dropping a line to let you know you were on my mind. Hope all is well. And see you at 50/90?

  • @guatecoop  Mar 13

Thanks! That is crazy how work can just take over. Hopefully you enjoy your job!

  • @guatecoop  Mar 12

Hey Kelly, could you send me your vocal tracks of "Make My Own Way Home? I am not going to publish anything, but just want to mix a full track to archive in the files of awesome collabs.....actually, I'm just trying to organize files of finished tracks for each year and I don't have this one! Fabulous....

  • @standup  Mar 7

Thanks for your reply. I'll be around for 50/90, so let's keep it open. I'm fine with "if stars align". I don't usually write and post instrumental bits, but let's leave it open and see if there's an opportunity.

  • @standup  Mar 6

Listened to "Make My Own Way Home" again tonight, and I had just listened to some Joni Mitchell this week, and here you are channeling Joni Mitchell. Which I didn't really hear on the first listen.

If there's an opportunity for us to collab in the future, I would really like to check that possibility out.

  • @tamsnumber4  Mar 5

Thanks for listening to my songs "Amelia" and "Start Walking in Your Dreams" and my collab song "Fades to Gray" and "Where I Want You / By My Side", I appreciate it!!

  • @theodamus  Mar 1

Thank you so much for your lovely comment on Blueberries and Fennel! Us New Zealanders also love the macabre and bittersweet 😁

  • @standup  Feb 28

Thanks for your reply, and hopefully my advice is not presumptuous. You SAID you were still working on it...

  • @mikeb Feb 28

Thanks for the comment on 'Fades to Gray'!

  • @sciren  Feb 28

I'm so glad you're here again this year, and even more thrilled that you're getting into digital music and focusing on studio vocals. I can't wait to see where it takes you. Please be back next year! We need more.

  • @kristian  Feb 21

don’t stress it Kelly 😀 if work is giving you a hard time, then just quit.. I mean, what can possibly be more important than FAWM? 🤷🏼‍♂️😜

  • @guatecoop  Feb 20

You’ve got some time still! Do kristian’s first for sure. That will give me time to do the cleanup and refinement.

  • @guatecoop  Feb 20

I’ll even clean up those drums and bass and add some tasty details.....😁

  • @guatecoop  Feb 20

Oh just do it!!! Oh please. Hahaha

  • @opossum Feb 18

    Dear Kelly B,

Yer welcome for the comments. And THANK YOU for yer comments! Regarding that Joni woman, yes I lived in her attic. I think it was back when she was dating some celebrity. I think it was Bill Cosby? Hmmm, maybe it was David Crosby? So many hooman names sound the same to us marsupials! Did you know we eat ticks? That's a good thing!

    Your pal,

  • @gregwere Feb 17

sounds great - look forward to it.

  • @gregwere Feb 17

Cool ok - after FAWM - and yes that's a great song to do a video as it such a positive vibe. Cheers Greg

  • @deadhead Feb 17

So is this "friend" of yours looking to collab on How Far Will I Go For Her or just in general? I'd love to do a version of that song with lyrics and vocals as I feel like its well suited to it. But I'm down for a new song as well!

Last I heard Hugh's Room was still around, but who knows how it will be post covid. I haven't actually gotten there yet (fairly new to Toronto) but I've heard nothing but good things about it. I'll have to make it a priority when things open back up.

  • @gregwere Feb 17

An easier song because its just really about the magic of nature and life in general with lots of common images is this one, but have a think - I;m really easy if you want to give it a go. Cheers Greg

or maybe this one - which almost anything could be used as imagery as its just about turning over a new leaf:

all from new album of course.

  • @gregwere Feb 17

I would love to if you have time. There might be an easier song than Miracle Road - not sure how easy that would be. Was that the song you had in mind? Cheers Greg PS its actually a song about climate change bushfires and politicians who are climate deniers, but are happy get the church vote if oyu know what I mean. Of course video footage doesn't have to tell that exact story.

  • @gregwere Feb 16

Thanks for your lovely comments on my tracks. I really value your opinion so it is very encouraging and supportive, your feedback. Much appreciated. Cheers Greg

  • @gm7  Feb 16

Thx buddy. We both have reasons to be upbeat this year.
Can't wait for another one of you creations. Canada ROCKS!!

  • @guatecoop  Feb 15

Wow!! That’s all I can say! Our last collaboration a few years back was also a wow, but now I see what you mean about your voice being stronger. Wow. Thank you sooo much for putting such effort and care into making the song complete. Wow.

  • @emkaydeebee  Feb 15

Fascinating! I have family living in Canada (since the mid 80s) but was not aware of this!

  • @emkaydeebee  Feb 15

Thanks so much for your comments on my Siren songs, really appreciate your taking the time to listen. Intrigued by the leaning towards melancholy being a Canadian thing?...

  • @tukayandryan  Feb 15

Thank you so much for your lovely words about 'Stormbound' 😊

  • @mariekevinkmusic  Feb 15

Well, to me your voice has a lot of similarities. The way you use the higher register and how you switch between higher to lower notes. I happen to really love that kind of singing 😀

  • @guatecoop  Feb 14

Absolutely no doubt that you will do it justice—not that I ever have any preconceived notions or expectations. I really don’t. Like we’ve talked about before, I try to leave a nice space for a singer to work in. I’m looking forward to it!

  • @guatecoop  Feb 14

Hey there! I know that metalfoot had said he wanted to give it a shot early on and sheslin also voiced interest, but I’m all for multiple people doing what they do. It is always fascinating to see how singers hear and interpret songs completely different. I’m into it and I love the way you sing, but you know that. So, it’s up to you. I am all for it.

  • @gm7  Feb 13

Thx for the comment on Gotta Get Better.. there buddy!. It was fun to do.
I'm more happy your writing again.

  • @johnstaples  Feb 13

Thanks for your comment on Breaking Chains Kelly! It was strange singing to an odd (to me) drum beat without melodic accompaniment. I like the song well enough to work on it more later.

  • @gm7  Feb 13

    Any time buddy.
Just happy to see in the creative that jazz style you do.

  • @wrenarcher  Feb 9

    Hey Kelly... wow.
Thank you so SO much for the compliment and kind words about my ukulele song. I'm humbled beyond words that it touched you the way you described. Thank you again for taking the time to comment.

*i'm not gonna cry. i'm not gonna cry. i'm not gonna cry.*

  • @standup  Feb 8

Thanks for listening! I look forward to hearing more from you.

Interesting you hear Blue Rodeo, I hardly know them at all. You made that comment on the acoustic tune, maybe my voice is in that neighborhood. I should listen.

My main connection to that band is I love Colin Cripps’ electric guitar playing on Kathleen Edwards’ songs.

  • @cts  Feb 8

    Thank you so much, Kelly!

  • @gm7  Feb 3

How are you doing? getting any new musical ideas?
