My one triumph this February was finding time to write out even one set of lyrics. I found a couple lines in here that I really like, and the rest I'll probably continue to tweak.
- Update -
I have a demo. This is my first time seriously playing in almost two years, and its my first time recording something in even longer than that. Also recovering from a cold. That's all the excuses I can muster... Please be gentle 😀
I'm very pleased with my new house as a recording space. High ceilings, plaster walls, and old oak floors make a nice acoustic environment, though I hope to learn to take advantage of it better.
For the demo, I played my nylon string acoustic with a mono mic just above the soundhole, recorded the DI pickup to add some twang and picked up vocals on a LDC just off center from my chin. I used a room mic and mixed that in to add some space, then added just a tiiiiny bit of reverb to gel it all.
Even for a five-minute mix, in pretty dissatisfied with the sound. I think I done used too many mics...
Edit: Tweaked a few things in the mix. I had too much EQ, too much room, and the reverb was a bit too bright. Removed all but a teensy bit of EQ, brought the reverb up, and added a master bus compression to get a bit more volume out.
It’s the quiet chaos of an empty space
That weighs on you
Makes you long for the throngs of Boston whence you came
You want to trade those silos in the haze
For another place
Warmer spring in the olive trees that share your name
Even in the dark they shine;
Your eyes speak of the Levantine
Folk dance art once traced out by your feet.
Somewhere in your night you struck a spark in mine
While you told me stories
of summer time on a noisy brickwork street
Why did you get out
And why did you stay in
And why do you ask yourself that question over again and again and again...
Place your head between your hand
Scream: “This is me now!”
The old city’s calls don’t pierce the veil I wear
Press your head against mine own
Who do I now owe?
When the air around becomes too dense to bear
What makes you happy?
Bedclothes early morning
Gives way to philosophizing warning
Dark storm rages 'neath the surface at the sea’s uneven tides.
I don’t even notice cracks open in the ceiling
My ears roar with your quiet breathing
And I wonder what a wonder it is to be the one you tried
Blue eyes go wide;
I know that's it begun
I hold you through shaking, there's no overtaking a
conscience on the run.
Place your palms over my eyes
These are my windows now
I need the weight of you here just to breathe
Spread your arms at the top of the stairs
These are my wings now!
Laughing at the irony beneath.
What makes you happy?
What makes you?
Climbed to the top of the palisades; you’re peering down
Deaf to the roar of the accolades that you have drawn
Blinded by the early shades of your coming dawn
Keep moving on... I’ll keep on following along
What makes you happy
What makes you free
You make me happy
you make me
